Hazel M. Beavers

Mankato, Kan., resident Hazel May (Runyan) Beavers, 87, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Jewell County Long Term Care in Mankato.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of the Nazarene in Burr Oak, Kan., with the Rev. Harold Lamb officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Superior. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior.
Mrs. Beavers was born Oct. 2, 1911, to Charles and Edith (Roper) Runyan on a farm in Richardson County near Salem. She grew up on a farm near Courtland, Kan., and attended Willadale Country School near Courtland. She graduated from Courtland High School. On Aug. 12, 1949, she married Jack V. Beavers in Superior. They lived in Superior, later moving to Geneva where they lived until she retired. They then moved to Burr Oak, Kan. On Jan. 19, 1985, her husband died.
Survivors are two sons, Clinton Killen of Osborne, Kan., and Larry Beavers of Superior; two daughters, Wilma Roesti of Burr Oak and JoAnn Simmons of Superior; two brothers, Cecil of Concordia, Kan., and Carol of Bakersfield, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the Jewell County Hospital Long Term Care.
Janice Letourneau
Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999
Mankato, Kan., resident Janice (Hollister) Letourneau, 71, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at Infinia Care Home in Smith Center, Kan.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mankato with the Rev. Elwin Bergstraesser officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvery Cemetery in Clyde, Kan. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Melby Mortuary in Mankato and after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Mrs. Letourneau was born Jan. 12, 1928, to Howard and Stella (Whitcomb) Hollister in Monmouth, Ill. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1945. She worked as a photographer with the Hastings Tribune in Hastings. She owned and operated photography studios in Hebron and Sutton and won several awards. In 1977 she married Kenneth Letourneau. They lived in Clyde and Mankato.
Survivors are her husband; five daughters, Karla Smith and Jolene Ekwall, both of Kearney, Kathleen Comtais of Titusville, Fla., Sandi Frerichs of Wichita, Kan., and Cynthia Conover of Juniata; two sons, Vernon Kellie of Hoffman Estates, Ill., and Jeff Frerichs of Denver; three stepdaughters, Linda Belcher of Eufaula, Ala., Debbie Isstas of Aurora, Kan., and Louisa Dowling of Cuba, Kan.; two stepsons, Robert Letourneau of Aurora, Kan., and Billy Letourneau of Clay Center, Kan.; two sisters, Beverly Foote of Pekin, Ill., and Delores Kemp of Phoenix; 12 grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.
M. Evelyn Berzina

Former Hastings resident M. Evelyn (Halloran) Berzina, 87, of Sioux City, Iowa, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City.
Services were Sept. 9 at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home chapel in Sioux City with the Rev. Gerald A. Hartz officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum in Sioux City. Larkin Northside Funeral Home of Sioux City was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Berzina was born April 15, 1912, to Daniel and Mary (Stewart) Halloran in Hastings. On Nov. 18, 1940, she married Elmer J. Berzina in Omaha. They moved from Omaha to Sioux City in 1946. She worked as a secretary at an insurance company office.
She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City and its Altar Society of which she was president. She also was a member of the Ave Maria Court 269 Catholic Daughters of America and several bridge groups.
Survivors are her husband; four sons, Joseph of Rapid City, S.D., James of Wichita Falls, Texas, Robert of Sioux City and Richard of Franklin, Tenn.; two daughters, Carol Ann Buboltz of Sioux City and Kathleen Payne of Lincoln; one sister, Clair Halloran of Hastings; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister.
Dean Oberheide

Red Cloud resident Dean Oberheide, 89, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Red Cloud with the Rev. Anderson Kwankin officiating. Burial will be in Guide Rock Cemetery. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Oberheide was born Nov. 28, 1909, to Walter and Lilie (Dean) Oberheide in Webster County. He attended Rural School District 78 and Guide Rock High School. In 1937 he moved to Leadville, Colo., where he worked in the mines until 1943. On March 16, 1938, he married Evelyn Frey in Leadville. In 1943 they moved to a farm east of Red Cloud.
Survivors are his wife; four sisters, Dorothy Glantz and Betty Meyer, both of Hastings, Maxine Dillon of Denver and Ruth Wurm of Ft. Morgan, Colo.; two brothers, Henry of Phoenix, Ore., and Paul of Vancouver, Wash.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one son, Kendall, and one sister.
Memorials have been established.
Naola J. Moore

Hastings resident Naola Jean (Willcox) Moore, 76, of 1363 W. E St., No. 1, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion in Hastings.
Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Hastings with the Bishop James R. Ruberson officiating. Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Walnut Hill Cemetery in Kingman, Kan. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Moore was born Feb. 12, 1923, to G.G. and Pearl E. (Hambergh) Willcox in Kingman. On May 28, 1943, she married John E. Moore. They moved to Arapahoe from Scandia, Kan., in 1971. On Jan. 18, 1982, her husband died. She moved to Kearney the same year and moved to Hastings in 1988.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Survivors are four daughters, Marla Mercer and Karol Moore, both of Hastings, Shirley Moore of Kearney and Judy Hueser of Oklahoma City, Okla.; six sons, Larry, Terry, Michael, Patrick and Jeffry, all of Arapahoe, and Roger of Hastings; 21 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one son and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the family.
Susan S. Wilmot

Bloomington resident Susan S. (Strobl) Wilmot, 96, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin.
Services were to be 1 p.m. today at the Hutchins Funeral Home chapel in Franklin with the Rev. J.C. Browne officiating. Burial was to be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Bloomington.
Mrs. Wilmot was born Feb. 18, 1903, to Mike and Mary (Lukas) Strobl in Webster County. She attended rural school in Webster County and Red Cloud High School. On Oct. 15, 1929, she married Raymond A. Wilmot in Smith Center, Kan. They moved from Webster County in 1937 to a farm northeast of Franklin. They later moved to a farm southwest of Franklin and then to Bloomington in 1946. She worked as a cook and in various businesses in and around Franklin County. On Feb. 27, 1981, her husband died.
Survivors are three sons, James of Colville, Wash., Alfred of Clayton, Wash., and Leslie of Chattarey, Wash.; five daughters, Margaret Karabin of Bloomington, Jean Smith of Elberton, Ga., June Kearns of Oakley, Kan., Helen Bush of Spokane, Wash., and Dorothy Robertson of Coeur d' Alene, Idaho; one brother, Robert "Jack" of Red Cloud; one sister, Mabel Mitzelfeldt of Red Cloud; 38 grandchildren; 78 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one daughter; three brothers; five sisters; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Vernon P. Schroeder

Former Hastings resident the Rev. Vernon P. Schroeder, 80, of Grand Island, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Drs. Jim Keyser and Cole Fowler and the Rev. Richard Urbach officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island.
Mr. Schroeder was born June 9, 1919, to Ernest and Rena (Stark) Schroeder in Eustis. He was raised in Eustis and graduated from Eustis High School in 1936. He received his bachelor's degree from Western Union College in LaMars, Iowa, in 1940. On May 17, 1942, he married Esther Rembolt in Lincoln. They lived in Naperville, Ill., where he received his bachelor of divinity degree in 1943 and his master of divinity in 1972 from the Evangelical Theological Seminary. He served the United Methodist Church in Callaway for 10 years. He established a new congregation known as the Trinity Evangelical United Brethren Church in Ralston and ministered there for nine years. He also served two months on the LaCour Mission in Japan. He served the Lincoln Calvary Church for 11 years before moving to Grand Island where he was minister for five years at Trinity United Methodist Church. He also served the Hastings First Church until he retired in 1981. He returned to Grand Island where he served part time for 10 years as Minister of Visitation at Trinity United Methodist Church.
He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He served as director of Christian Education. He was a member of the Conference Missions and Benevolence and the committee on Church Union. He also was a member of the Kiwanis and the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program and a former member of the Masonic Lodge No. 317.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Ronald P. "Ron" of Lincoln; three daughters, Judy Johnson and Beth Reynolds, both of Forsyth, Mo., and Jane Duehr of Boyntom Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the Trinity United Methodist Church.

Jay Paul Denkert, infant son of Jon P. and Tracy A. (Himmelberg) Denkert of Kenesaw, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Private graveside services were to be today at the Kenesaw Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Duffy officiating. Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home of Kenesaw is in charge of arrangements.
Jay Paul was born Sept. 10, 1999, in Hastings.
Survivors are his parents; grandparents, Roger and Marilyn Denkert of Kenesaw and Robert and Betty Himmelberg of Lawrence; and great-grandmother, Rosalie Peter of Sutton.

Robert A. Turnquist

Axtell resident Robert A. Turnquist, 76, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at his home.
Memorial services are 2 p.m. Monday at the Bethphage Mission Campus Zion Chapel in Axtell with the Revs. Helmut Yurk, William Runaas Jr., Leuren Youngdale and John Gosswein officiating. Private family burial will precede the services at Bethphage Mission Cemetery in Axtell. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Freeland-Layton Funeral Home in Axtell.
Survivors are his wife; five daughters, including Janet Cavanaugh of Minden; one sister; and 14 grandchildren.
Barbara M. Steinke

Hastings resident Barbara M. (Hynnek) Steinke, 63, of 1200 Country Club Drive died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at St. Francis Skilled Care in Grand Island.
Memorial services are 11 a.m. Saturday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Revs. Harold Stromer and Kathleen Kasper officiating. There is no visitation. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Steinke was born Aug. 8, 1936, to Edward and Helen (Steinert) Hynnek in Milwaukee. She graduated from West Allis High School in Wisconsin in 1953. On Oct. 19, 1957, she married Paul Steinke in West Allis, Wis. She completed her study to be a registered nurse at Milwaukee County General Hospital. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. She worked as an office nurse for Dr. Fred Rutt in Hastings and did general duty nursing at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings. In 1976 she started working at Educational Service Unit No. 9 in Hastings as school nurse and later as school nurse supervisor and diagnostic nurse. Since 1991 she had been in private practice as a professional counselor. On Aug. 29, 1997, her husband died.
She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the P.E.O. She also served on the board of directors for the Special Children's Fund in Hastings from 1986-92, the board and as president of the Adams County Child Development Council from 1986-88, the board of the Adams County Child and Family Support Team from 1986 until the time of her death, the South Central Counseling Advisory Council board from 1985-93 and the National Board for Certified Counselors Inc.
Survivors are one daughter, Lynn Hohlen of Juniata; two sons, Jeff of Woodland Park, Colo., and Mark of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; her mother of Hastings; and seven grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one brother.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in care of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Angela Clutter

Former Webster County resident Angela Clutter, 97, of Springfield, Mo., died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, in Springfield.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. Monday at the Catherton Cemetery near Bladen with the Rev. Stanley Schieffer officiating. Simonson-Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud is in charge of arrangements.
Miss Clutter was born Jan. 1, 1902, to Kyd and Mary (Boudreau) Clutter in Webster County. She attended Catherton rural school. She served in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps during World War II. After the war, she moved to Escondido, Calif., where she was employed as a nurse for 25 years. In 1990 she moved to Springfield.
She was preceded in death by one brother.
Cleo M. Willis

Minden resident Cleo M. (Neuman) Willis, 80, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at the Long Term Care Unit of Kearney County Health Services in Minden.
Graveside services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the Minden Cemetery with the Rev. Kathy Bryant officiating. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. today at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Willis was born Oct. 7, 1918, to George and Ila (Tillmann) Neuman in Arco, Minn. She was raised in Storm Lake, Iowa. She graduated from the Capital Beauty School in Omaha in 1936. In 1945 she married Carl Willis. They lived in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Colorado before moving to Minden in 1965. She owned and operated a beauty salon in Minden and was a beautician for 63 years. She also raised dachshunds. In 1970 her husband died.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 52 in Kearney.
Survivors are two brothers, Lael Neuman of Storm Lake and Orvel Neuman of Crescent City, Fla.
A memorial fund has been established.
