William "Bill" G. Hughes

Hastings resident William "Bill" G. Hughes, 74, of 722 W. 33rd St., died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Memorial services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel. There will be no viewing, but friends may sign the book at the funeral home from 1-9 p.m. today, 1-9 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. until services Tuesday.
Mr. Hughes was born Nov. 12, 1925, to Harold G. and Viola (Allis) Hughes in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1945-46. He married Jeanne Nelsen. She preceded him in death. He moved to Hastings from Omaha in 1977 and became sales manager at KHAS-TV. He retired in 1992. He married Jean Stevens on June 13, 1998.
He was a past board member of the Spouse Abuse/Sexual Assault crisis center, the Kidney Foundation and the Adams County Agricultural Society. He was a member of Southern Hills Country Club and the Marine Corps League.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Terri Hughes of Hastings and Deb Gunia of Virginia Beach, Va.; three stepdaughters, Teri Willmore, Linda Norris and Robyn Stevens, all of Hastings; one sister, Sandra Vanderheiden of Haywood, Calif.; and 12 grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to the Kidney Foundation or the Hastings Animal Shelter.
Dorothy Silk Brown

Former Hastings resident Dorothy I. (Hurst) Silk Brown, 80 of Aurora died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Denny Silk officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery at Wolbach. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mrs. Brown was born Jan. 25, 1920, to Charles and Betty (Bower) Hurst in Columbus. She moved with her family to the Wolbach area in 1929, and she graduated from Wolbach High School. She married Delmer T. Silk on April 4, 1938. They farmed east of Wolbach and later moved into Wolbach. They then moved to Hastings. Her husband died in November 1956. She married Lloyd C. Brown in January 1959. She received her bachelor's degree from Hastings College in 1960 and her master's degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1970. She taught in the Hastings Public Schools until ill health forced her retirement in 1972. Her second husband died in June 1982. She then moved to Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island where she lived for 12 years. She had lived at Hamilton Manor for six years.
Survivors are two daughters, Betty Marr of Doniphan and DeEtte Brasfield of Aurora; two sons, Monte Silk of Bullhead City, Ariz., and Denny Silk of Springfield; one stepdaughter, Barbara Ericksen of Hobbs, N.M.; three stepsons, Ronald Brown of San Antonio, Texas, Wendell Brown of Newport Beach, Calif., and Darrell Brown of Lincoln; two sisters, Evelyn McIntyre of Wolbach and Doris Finney of Portland, Ore.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by infant twin sisters.
Memorials may be directed to Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings or the Nebraska Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Mankato, Kan., resident Glenn E. Grout Jr., 74, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at Jewell County Hospital in Mankato.
Services are 4 p.m. Saturday at Harmony United Methodist Church in Mankato with the Rev. Frank DeFisher officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Melby Mortuary in Mankato and 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the church.
Mr. Grout was born May 13, 1925, to Glenn and Mildred (Mizner) Grout in Northbranch, Kan. He attended school at District 119 in Jewell County and graduated from Mankato High School. On Sept. 12, 1943, he married Roma Nelson in Mankato. He was a retired farmer and also retired from the Soil Conservation Service.
He was a member of the Harmony United Methodist Church where he was a former treasurer and Sunday school teacher. He also was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Jerry of Mankato; one daughter, Jeannette Elliott of Columbia, Mo.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Katharine Diane; and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the church or Mankato Endowment Association Scholarship Fund.

Smith Center, Kan., resident Steve L. Martin, 49, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, near Wichita, Kan.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Simmons Mortuary chapel in Smith Center with the Rev. Bernie Dickson officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Smith Center. Visitation is 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the mortuary.
Mr. Martin was born Feb. 8, 1951, to Leland and Donna Martin in Portis, Kan. He graduated from Smith Center High School and was a U.S. Navy/Marine Medical Corps veteran. He worked as a truck driver.
He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Smith Center and the Smith Center Country Club.
Survivors are two daughters, Amanda Martin and Amber Martin, both of Scott City, Kan.; two stepdaughters, Cassie White of Phillipsburg, Kan., and Christy Murphy of Fort Collins, Colo.; his parents of Smith Center; two brothers, Dennis of Smith Center and Rob of Concordia, Kan.; one sister, Pamela Metz of Hutchinson, Kan.; and one stepgrandchild.
He was preceded in death by one brother.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Fairbury with the Rev. Sharee Kelly officiating. Burial will be in the Fairbury Cemetery. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home of Fairbury is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors are her husband; two sons; one daughter, Jeanne Loch of Hastings; two brothers; one sister; and six grandchildren.

Geneva resident Phyllis J. (Hogue) Kamler, 69, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, in Lincoln.
Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva. Services are 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Geneva with Monsignor Ivan Vap officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation begins 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Kamler was born Nov. 21, 1930, to Henry and Edith (Madison) Hogue in Geneva. She married William Kamler Jr. He preceded her in death.
Survivors are four sons, James of Geneva, Mike of Shickley, Richard of Lemoyne and Tom of Ohiowa; two daughters, Susan Engle of Geneva and Bonnie Zelenka of Fairmont; two sisters, Vivian Franck of Geneva and Myrna Ritchey of Salem, Ore.; 14 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the Geneva Rescue Unit or masses to St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Mary Catholic Church in Shickley.
Harold J. Bothwell

Superior resident Harold James Bothwell, 98, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Good Samaritan Center in Superior.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Jon Albrecht officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Lovewell, Kan. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Bothwell was born Nov. 20, 1901, to Lawrence M. and Carrie (Lowe) Bothwell on a farm near Spirit Lake, Iowa, in Jackson County, Minn. At age 7, he moved with his family near Lovewell. He graduated from Sinclair Rural High School in Lovewell in 1919. On Nov. 19, 1927, he married Opal Joy Wilson. They farmed near Lovewell for several years. He retired in 1994 and moved to Superior. On Dec. 14, 1996, his wife died.
He was a member of the Webber United Methodist Church in Kansas and the Farm Bureau where he served on the board for several years. He also was a trustee of the Jackson Township and served on the Webber (Kan.) Board of Education.
Survivors are one daughter, Jean Davis of Salado, Texas; two sons, Lawrence of Superior and David of Mankato, Kan.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by one brother, one sister and one grandchild.
Memorials have been established and may be sent in care of the family.
Lola A. Neff

Kenesaw resident Lola A. (Steinke) Neff, 93, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at the Kenesaw Haven Home.
Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings with the Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Visitation is 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.
Mrs. Neff was born Oct. 14, 1906, to Fred W. and Augusta (Ruterman) Steinke in Upland. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School and worked at the theaters in Hastings. She married Ray Neff and in 1959, they became the owners and operators of the X-L Motel in Hastings. After they sold the motel, she worked at the Hastings Regional Center until retirement. On April 23, 1990, her husband died.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors are three sons, Dale of Cody, Wyo., Donald of Tucson, Ariz., and Dean of Omaha; one sister, Golda Hempel of Hastings; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one brother.

Hastings resident Louis J. Vontz, 75, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.
Mr. Vontz was born June 6, 1924, to Louis and Ruth (Sigman) Vontz in Indianola. He attended Lincoln High School. On Oct. 4, 1945, he married Marcie Pavelka. He served in the U.S. Army. He was owner of L.J. Vontz Construction Co. in Hastings.
Survivors are three sons, Gary of Kansas City, Mo., and Daniel and Bradley, both of Ayr; one daughter, Susan Irons of Stevens Point, Wis.; two sisters, Wilma West of Fresno, Calif., and Sister Ruth Vontz of Missoula, Mont.; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters.
Memorials may be given to the Hastings Catholic Schools Trust.
Lucille M. Cotner

Former Hastings resident Lucille M. (Moschel) Cotner, 84, of Papillion, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at her home.
Services are 1 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, 9-11 a.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.
Mrs. Cotner was born Dec. 29, 1914, to Elmer D. and Mary (Bowen) Moschel in Akron, Colo. She moved with her family to Hastings at an early age. In 1933 she graduated from Hastings Senior High School. She also graduated from Kearney State College in 1937. On June 15, 1938, she married Albert Cotner. She taught school in Page, Sumner and Wellfleet. From 1949-56 she taught in Ouray, Colo. In 1956 her husband died and she returned to Hastings. She taught at Hastings Junior High and Morton Elementary and was principal of Lincoln Elementary School for 15 years. She retired in 1981.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she served on several committees and boards. She also was a member of Chapter FH, P.E.O. and the Order of the Eastern Star Acacia Chapter No. 39, all in Hastings. She was president of Ouray County Education Association and charter member and president of the American Association of University Women, both in Ouray. She was building representative and treasurer of Hastings Education Association; secretary-treasurer of Region IV Elementary School Principals; and corresponding secretary and second vice president of Rho State Delta Kappa Gamma. She was president of Region IV Nebraska State Education Association, Central Nebraska Council of the International Reading Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Gamma Chapter, past president of the Hastings Area Retired Teachers Association and president elect of Nebraska Association of Women Administrators.
Survivors are two sons, James Jay of Tucson, Ariz., and Douglas Joe of Vernon Hills, Ill.; two daughters, Suone Caye Cotner of Seattle and Connie Lu Ozanne of Papillion; two sisters, Vicki Butzirus of Hastings and Arlene Schietzelt of North Hollywood, Calif.; two brothers, John of Tempe, Ariz., and Eugene of Lincoln City, Ore.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church Endowment Fund or Hastings Area Retired Teachers Association Scholarship Fund.
Martha P. Mitchell

Former Hastings resident Martha Pearl (Hunter) Mitchell, 91, of Downey, Calif., died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at Downey Community Hospital.
Burial will be at a later date. Rose Hills Mortuary of Whittier, Calif., is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Mitchell was born March 12, 1908, to Otis and Gertrude (Thompsen) Hunter in Gentry, Mo. In 1923 she married Herschel G. Mitchell. They moved to Hastings in 1952 and Las Vegas in 1957. In 1964 they moved to California. Her husband died in 1978.
Survivors are two sons, E.H. "Cot" of Grove, Okla., and Bill of Hastings; two daughters, Helen Gregory and Louise Hecke Levers, both of La Mirada, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Victor L., and seven brothers.
