Ralph I. Moorhead

Former Tribland resident Ralph I. Moorhead, 89, of Kenesaw died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Kenesaw with the Rev. Paul Duffy officiating. Burial will be at the Fairfield Cemetery in Fairfield. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to services at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home of Kenesaw.
Mr. Moorhead was born Dec. 7, 1909, to Alexander and Annie (Kohler) Moorhead in Nuckolls County. He graduated from high school in Deweese. From 1930-34 he served in the U.S. Navy. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942-45 as a sergeant mechanic and flight engineer. For several years he worked as a mechanic for Spady in Hastings. In 1973 he moved to Kenesaw and worked for Kenesaw Ford Motor. In 1998 he moved to the Nebraska Veterans Home. In 1973 he married Dorothy Hadlweg. She died March 10, 1994.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the VFW.
Survivors are one stepson, James Pickering of Kearney; two sisters, Grace Jester of Fairfield and Iona Laird of Weiser, Idaho; two brothers, Elmer of Hastings and Glen of Edgar; and two stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.
Memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
J. Donald Schafer

Hastings resident J. Donald Schafer, 86, of The Kensington died Monday, May 10, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial will be at Parkview Cemetery. Visitations will be today until 9 p.m.; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday; and 9 a.m. until service time Friday.
Mr. Schafer was born Feb. 16, 1913, to Joe and Emma (Hasch) Schafer in St. Edward. In 1931 he graduated from St. Edward High School. He then moved to Hastings where he attended Hastings College for three years. Following college, he played with the Leo and Gene Pieper dance band for three years. In 1938 he married Mildred Hide. From 1938-49 he was employed by the Hastings Typewriter Co. In 1949 he began his own business, the Schafer Printing Co. He retired in 1978. His wife preceded him in death.
He was a past member of the Hastings Municipal Band, Hastings Dime Symphony and the Nebraska Airstream Association.
Survivors are one daughter, Nancy Helmann of Rapid City, S.D.; two sons, J.D. of Denver and Perry of Sacramento, Calif.; one brother, Lester of Geneseo, Ill.; one sister, Nadine Schafer of St. Edwards; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to Hastings College, Fuhr Hall in care of Robin Koozer.
Myron Loyde Shafer

Former Tribland resident Myron Loyde Shafer, 42, of Grand Island died Friday, May 7, 1999, in Hall County.
Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Gil E. Karges officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery in rural Hall County. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. until services Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Shafer was born Feb. 17, 1957, in Hastings to Maurice and Lois (Van Boening) Shafer. He attended school districts 31 and 67, both in Adams County. In 1975 he graduated from Trumbull High School in Trumbull. He was employed at Trumbull Co-op, worked in construction, was an electrician and a truck driver. He was working for Central Non-Stock Co-op at the time of his death. His fiance was Theresa Starkey of Grand Island.
He was a member of Rosedale United Methodist Church.
Survivors are one daughter, Tina Shafer of Las Vegas; his mother of Hastings; three sisters, Marilyn Johnson of Doniphan, Judy Dangler of Trumbull and Maureen Wells of Holdrege; and three brothers, Gary, Paul and Clayton, all of Hastings.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.
Margaret Helen Marsh

Hastings resident Margaret Helen (Cowton) Marsh, 89, of 849 N. Burlington Ave. died Saturday, May 8, 1999, at her home.
Graveside services are 3 p.m. Tuesday at Parkview Cemetery with the Very Rev. Richard J. Martindale officiating. There will be no visitation. Friends may sign the register book 6-9 p.m. today at Brand Wilson Funeral Home.
Mrs. Marsh was born March 17, 1910, to Harry and Grace (Dobson) Cowton in Hastings. She attended Hastings Senior High School. On March 21, 1943, she married Herbert J. Marsh. He died Oct. 3, 1949. She was a lifelong resident of Hastings except for living in New York City for six years. There, she worked at the National Episcopal Church Offices. She was a partner in GraMar Interior decorating and designs with her mother. She had a stroke in 1988.
She was a member St. Mark's Episcopal Pro-Cathedral. She was a supporter of Sunnyside Home, serving on the board of directors from 1958-91 and as board president from 1962-67 and 1970-89. She continued to be a consultant on the board from 1988-1991.
Memorials may be given to St. Mark's Episcopal Pro-Cathedral or Sunnyside Home.
William Albert "Bill" Waugh

Mankato, Kan., resident William Albert "Bill" Waugh, 66, died Friday, May 7, 1999, at Blue Valley Lutheran Care Home in Hebron.
Services were to be at 11 a.m. today at Melby Mortuary chapel in Mankato with the Rev. Allen Scheer officiating. Burial was planned in Mount Hope Cemetery at Mankato.
Mr. Waugh was born Aug. 23, 1932, to William Ralph and Eva (Moxter) Waugh in Belleville, Kan. In 1973 he moved to Blue Valley Lutheran Care Home.
Survivors are his mother of Mankato; one brother, John "Jack" of Leadville, Colo.; and one sister, Theresa Perry of Dana Point, Calif.
Tillie Ryan

Red Cloud resident Tillie Ryan, 91, died Friday, May 7, 1999, at her home.
Rosary is 7:30 p.m. today at Simonson-Williams Funeral Home chapel in Red Cloud. Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Red Cloud with the Rev. Stanley Schieffer officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery at Red Cloud.
Mrs. Ryan was born Dec. 8, 1907, to Michael and Emma (Moede) Bliss in Webster County. She moved with her family to Smith County, Kan., as a young girl. There she attended rural school at Womer and Johnson. She worked at the telephone office and grocery store in Womer. On June 15, 1929, she married William Ryan. They farmed in Smith County. In 1968 they moved to Red Cloud. Her husband died July 6, 1969.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Red Cloud and its Altar Society and the Golden Rule Club.
Survivors are one daughter, Zelma Peterson of Lebanon, Kan.; two sons, William Ryan of Smith Center, Kan., and Jim Ryan of Salina, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She also was preceded in death by four sisters, two brothers, one grandchild and one great-great-grandchild.
Memorials may be given to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Elm Street Center or Webster County Hospital, all in Red Cloud.
Marina Sue Vap

Glenvil resident Marina Sue (Lenzen) Vap, 42, died Friday, May 7, 1999, at her home.
Rosary and wake services are 7:30 p.m. today and services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, both at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Deweese with the Rev. Dennis Hunt officiating. Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery at Fairfield. McLaughlin Funeral Home of Clay Center is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Vap was born July 9, 1956, to Paul and Flo Lenzen in Wayne. She graduated from elementary school at the Golden Prairie Rural School. In 1974 she graduated from Laurel High School. She was employed at the Hastings Regional Center for seven years. On May 3, 1980, she married Dennis Vap of Glenvil in Hastings. She then worked at the Ryanos Cafe in Glenvil for six years.
She was a member of the Our Lady of the Assumption Church and its Altar Society and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Glenvil.
Survivors are her husband; one daughter Brenda Vap of Glenvil; two stepdaughters, Sherry Shaw of Fairfield and Denise Johnson of Hastings; one stepson, Dave Vap of Juniata; her parents of Laurel; one sister Jackie Wortmann of Norfolk; eight stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Victor A. 'Tony' Gunderson

Hastings resident Victor A. "Tony" Gunderson, 76, of 510 Lane B died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Rosary is 7 p.m. Wednesday and services are 2:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. David F. Bourek officiating. Burial will be in the Juniata Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. until rosary Wednesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.
Mr. Gunderson was born May 30, 1923, to Victor E. and Bridgetta (O'Riley) Gunderson in Des Moines, Iowa. He moved with his family to Missouri Valley, Iowa, at an early age. He graduated in 1942 from Missouri Valley High School. In 1943 he moved to Hastings to help build the Naval Ammunition Depot and worked there until 1947. On June 7, 1944, he married Deloris Guthrie. He worked for the Adams County Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator until 1959. He then worked for the City of Hastings Street and Alley Department until retiring in 1989.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Eagles Club and Elks Club.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Carol Engelhardt of Hastings; one brother, Roger of Missouri Valley; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Memorials may be given to the St. Michael's School Building Fund.
Jacob Hefnider

Hastings resident Jacob Hefnider, 100, of 120 Forest Blvd. died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings with the Rev. Matt Nieman officiating. There is no viewing or visitation. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hefnider was born Feb. 5, 1900, to George and Margaretha (Hein) Hefnider in Norka, Russia. He came to the United States Feb. 18, 1913. He served in the National Guard from 1923-26. On April 12, 1926, he married Hazel M. Denton. They owned and operated Hefnider Barber and Beauty Shop, retiring in 1980. His wife died in July 1997.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors are one brother, Adam of Oceanside, Calif.; and one sister, Mary Dobesh of Hastings.
He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church.
Marie M. Rose

Hastings resident Marie Margaret (Hooe) Rose, 86, of Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Perkins.
Services are 3 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.
Mrs. Rose was born Sept. 16, 1913, to Charles Sherman and Frieda Catharine (Nuss) Hooe in Blackfoot, Idaho. From 1915-16, she lived in Stockham and then moved to Hastings. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1931. On Sept. 9, 1933, she married Donald Ralph Rose in Hastings. In 1944 she moved to Winfield, Kan., and then returned to Hastings a year later. She moved to Juniata in 1947 and back to Hastings at GSV in 1987. She earned a junior elementary teaching certificate in 1958 from Hastings College. She taught special education and grades one and two at Kenesaw for eight years. On July 27, 1987, her husband died.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the church circle and taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Juniata Auxiliary, Dorcas Kensington and Hastings Retired Teachers Association and a volunteer at the Good Samaritan Village library. She also was a Girl Scout and 4-H leader.
Survivors are one daughter, Donna Dill of Hastings; three sons, Jerry of Grand Junction, Colo., Larry of Baton Rouge, La., and Dick of Fort Collins, Colo.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given to the First United Methodist Church or the Hastings Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund.
