Dennis E. Johnson

Former Hastings resident Dennis E. Johnson, 58, of El Verta, Calif., died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at his home after a brief bout with cancer.
Memorial services were Dec. 13 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. David Bourek officiating and Dec. 18 at the American Legion in Rio Linda, Calif. The remains were cremated. North Sacramento Funeral Home of Sacramento, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Johnson was born Aug. 2, 1941, to Vernon and Stephanie Ann Johnson in Ivanhoe, Minn. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1959. He married Carol Flowers. He then served four years in the U.S. Air Force. In 1976 he re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and retired as a chief major/sergeant this year. He served 37 years at McClellan Air Force Base and retired in 1998.
He was a member of the American Legion, with which he was blood bank chairman.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Misty Johnson of California; one son, Johnathan Johnson of California; one stepson, David Flowers of California; his mother of Hastings; four brothers, Ron of Ayr and Wayne, Thomas and Mark, all of Hastings; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and two sisters.
Bruno H. Romanowski

Former Harvard resident Bruno H. Romanowski, 83, of York, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Heartstone Nursing Home in York.
Services are pending with Alberding-Wilson Funeral Home of Harvard.
Helen L. Tyler

Superior resident Helen L. (Howell) Tyler, 83, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Good Samaritan Center in Superior.
Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Lance Clay officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Mankato, Kan. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Tyler was born Nov. 18, 1916, to Carto Andrew and Barbara L. (Dunn) Howell near Mankato, Kan. She graduated from Burr Oak High School in Kansas. On Jan. 23, 1938, she married Anthony Lee "Tony" Tyler in Mankato. They farmed near Mankato for many years.
She was a member of the Nazarene Church in Superior and a charter member of Neighborhood Friendship Circle.
Survivors are her husband; two sons, Clarence of Superior and John of Fontana, Calif.; two daughters, Betty Becker of Mankato and Vicki Martens of Hardy; two sisters, Dorothy Schneider of Superior and Opal Davenport of Mankato; one brother, John of Mankato; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Larry.
Memorials may be given in care of the family.
Marvin R. Thurber

Nelson resident Marvin R. Thurber, 78, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, in Lincoln.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Klawitter-Price Funeral Home chapel in Nelson with the Rev. David Drewelow officiating. Burial will be in the Nelson Cemetery. Visitation is until 5 p.m. today, 1-5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Thurber was born March 4, 1921, to Oscar and Carrie A. (Farver) Thurber near Nora. He graduated from Nelson High School. On June 7, 1942, he married Lucille Kempkes at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Superior. From 1942-45 he served in the U.S. Army during World War II as an instructor of firearms and as field first sergeant. He then worked as a farmer and a lineman for South Central Public Power District.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and American Legion in Nelson.
Survivors are his wife; four daughters, Frances Butler of Nelson, Cheryl Feala of North Bend, Janet Warneke of Grand Island and Georgia Kempkes of Adams; one son, Marvin Jr. of Jackson, Wyo.; two sisters, Irene Nelson of Superior and Marlys Ilene Millard of Pocatello, Idaho; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three children and nine brothers.

Services are pending at Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings.
Mark D. Augustin

Former Minden resident Mark D. Augustin, 28, of Henderson, Nev., died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999, at his home.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Axtell with the Rev. Helmut Yurk officiating. A private family burial will be at a later date. Freeland-Layton Funeral Home of Axtell is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Augustin was born May 9, 1971, to Gary and Charla (Rusk) Augustin in Minden. He grew up in Axtell and graduated in 1990 from Axtell High School. He then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In 1997 he graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center as a doctor of pharmacy. He moved to Henderson, Nev., where he was employed at Sav-on Pharmacy.
Survivors are his parents of Axtell; one brother, Bruce of Atlanta, Ga.; and his grandmothers, Minnie Rusk of Alliance and Thelma Augustin of Juniata.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
Bobbie Donahue

Inland resident Bobbie (Kramer) Donahue, 60, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at her home.
Wake services are 7 p.m. Sunday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home chapel in Hastings. Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. Larry Gyhra officiating. Private family burial is at the Inland Cemetery.
Mrs. Donahue was born July 1, 1939, to Charles John and Helen (Reinert) Kramer in Gary, Ind. On Sept. 2, 1961, she married Robert F. Donahue at St. Mark's Church in Gary.
She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church.
Survivors are her husband; two daughters, Megan Donahue-Voit of Baltimore and Kathleen Hines of Peoria, Ill.; four sons, John and Kevin, both of Lincoln, Paul of Indianapolis and Michael of Omaha; one sister, Judy Jacoby of Milwaukee; and 16 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters.
Memorials may be given to the Spouse Abuse/Sexual Assault Crisis Center or the donor's choice.
George Higer

Superior resident George Higer, 75, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, in Superior.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home chapel in Superior with the Rev. Lester Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Superior. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Higer was born Nov. 29, 1924, to Charley and Jennie (Dutton) Higer in the Olive Hill community, Jewell County, Kan. He attended Hardscrabble Rural School south of Superior. On Aug. 25, 1942, he married Shirley Jane Smith in Mankato, Kan. He owned and operated Higer Transfer Trucking Co. and the Higer and Son's Dairy northeast of Superior. On March 7, 1975, his wife died. He married Arlene Deterding on March 27, 1976, in Superior.
Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Ruth Pearce and Terri Suchsland, both of Superior, and Cynthia Higer of Valley; four sons, Ronald Butch of Superior, Robert of Thorton, Colo., Curtis of Brighton, Colo., and Gary of Columbus; four sisters, Betty Maye Graham of Boss, Mo., Donna Gratopp of Superior, Norma Dunn of Hastings and Charlene Dunn of Thermopolis, Wyo.; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother.
Memorials may be given in care of the family.
Neva L. Sink

Mankato, Kan., resident Neva L. (Black) Sink, 92, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, at Jewell County Hospital Long-term Care in Mankato.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Melby Mortuary chapel in Mankato with the Rev. Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Burial will be at Prairie Home Cemetery in Esbon, Kan. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Saturday at the mortuary.
Mrs. Sink was born Nov. 28, 1907, to Perry and Cora (Ward) Black at Odessa, Kan. She attended Odessa Grade School and graduated from Esbon High School. She then attended Fort Hays State College. She taught in rural schools in Jewell County for several years. On Nov. 2, 1919, she married Emit Sink in Lebanon, Kan. He died Nov. 17, 1967.
She was a member of the Westside Matrons Extension Club and the Mankato Garden Club.
Survivors are one son, Roger of Manhattan, Kan.; one brother, Glenn Black of Concordia, Kan.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be given to the Odessa United Methodist Church, sent in care of Melby Mortuary, 402 N. High St., Mankato, KS 66956-1710.
Grace Malecek

Hastings resident Grace Malecek, 87, of The Kensington, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at her home.
Private family services and burial took place. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Malecek was born April 8, 1912, in Salineville, Ohio. She married Frederick J. Pratt, who later preceded her in death. She then married Henry Malecek. He also preceded her in death. She moved to Hastings in 1997 from Tucson, Ariz.
She attended Peace Lutheran Church.
Survivors are one son, James R. Pratt of Hastings; one stepson, Dave Malecek of Tiburon, Calif.; one daughter, Jayne A. Anderson of Reading, Penn.; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by one son, Frederick W. Pratt, and two brothers.

Helen C. Kominek

Former Holstein resident Helen C. (Hemberger) Kominek, 61, of Kearney, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Wake services are 7 p.m. today at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney with the Rev. Charles Torpey officiating. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney with the Rev. Jim Golka officiating. Burial will be in the Minden Cemetery.
Mrs. Kominek was born June 2, 1938, to Gerhard "Gary" and Coleta (Parr) Hemberger in Holstein. She graduated from Holstein High School in 1956. On June 20, 1959, she married Darrel Kominek at Assumption Catholic Church near Roseland. They lived in Milford for a short time before moving to Kearney in 1961. She worked as a child-care provider for 35 years.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and its Altar Society. She also was a member of the Fort Kearny Genealogical Society.
Survivors are her husband; one son, Steven of Clifton, Va.; one daughter, Barbara Hoyt of Minden; two sisters, Janet Bonifas of Roseland and Kathy Loskill of Kearney; four brothers, Lee of Kenesaw, Lloyd of Roseland, John of Holstein and Ed of Topeka, Kan.; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the St. James Catholic Church Building Fund or the American Liver Foundation.
Wayne J. Moser

Rural Bladen resident Wayne J. Moser, 53, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Blue Hill with the Rev. John Ross officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Hill Cemetery. Merten-Butler Mortuary of Blue Hill is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Moser was born Dec. 18, 1945, to Jay J. and Helen A. (Parks) Moser in Lincoln. He graduated from Dorchester High School in 1964 and from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1971. He married Patsy Hofstettler. From 1971-76, he taught school in Blue Hill. On Nov. 26, 1976, he married Eileen M. Toepfer at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Blue Hill. Since 1976, he was the owner of Moser Construction and also farmed.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and was church council president at the time of his death. He also was a member of the Blue Hill Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Annette Moser of Kearney and Karen Hatten of Chandler, Ariz.; two sons, Aaron of Bladen and Dale of Mesa, Ariz.; his mother and stepfather, Helen and Farroll Penrose of Blue Hill; and one sister, Phyllis Brass of Little Rock, Ark.
He was preceded in death by his father.
