Melvin Horky
SARGENT -- Melvin Horky, 76, of Sargent died Friday, July 23, 1999, at Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Mark Crist will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Sargent.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Horky was born
Dec. 25, 1922, to James and Mary (Kosmata) Horky at Sargent in the Cummings Park community area. He was educated in Cummings Park and graduated from Sargent High School in 1941.
After his graduation, he was a butcher at Semler's Market in Sargent. In February 1943, he entered the U.S. Army Air Force serving in China, Burma, and India. He was discharged in February 1946.
After returning to Sargent, he worked at the Beranek Pharmacy and later Palmer Monument at Broken Bow. He also worked at Midwest Neon Company in Casper, Wyo. In 1949, he returned to Sargent and rented farm ground to begin farming, which he did until his health failed.
He married Eileen Metcalf on June 5, 1955, in the Methodist Church in Hastings. They lived on his farm nine miles south of Sargent.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sargent, American Legion Post 104 of Sargent, the Taylor VFW, DAV and the China-Burma-India Veterans Association. He served as the county committeeman for the ACS for 15 years. He was also a member of the Dry Valley school board and the Sargent school board.
Survivors include his wife Eileen; two sons, Mark and Tom, both of Sargent; five grandchildren; three sisters, Irene Mauler of Casper, Wyo., Edna Lendsey of Arlington Heights, Ill., and Lucille Barnhart of Sargent.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Arlene Hagerty.
Roswell Nordstrom
STROMSBURG -- Roswell L. Nordstrom, 91, of Stromsburg died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg with Chaplain Dick Bauer officiating.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.
Patrick Sorrells
BATON ROUGE, La. -- Patrick Joseph Sorrells, 32, of Baton Rouge, La., died Friday, July 23, 1999, in LaPlace, La.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Baton Rouge with the Rev. Joseph Daleo officiating. Visitation will from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Rabenhorst Funeral Home in Baton Rouge.
Mr. Sorrells was a sales manager for AMFM Baton Rouge Radio Broadcast Company. He was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church and a board member of the American Cancer Society.
Survivors include his wife, Kelly (Phelan) Sorrells of Baton Rouge; his mother, MaryRose Daleo Sorrells of Greenwell Springs, La.; his grandparents, Peter J. and Connie Daleo of Beaumont, Texas, and Erma Sorrells of Baytown, Texas; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Phelan of Grand Island; two sisters, Kathryn (Mrs. Curtis) Plumlee of Baton Rouge, La. and Maureen Sorrells of Dallas, Texas; and two brothers, Michael Sorrells of Baton Rouge and Steven Sorrells of Washington, D.C.
He was preceded in death by his father, Montie A. Sorrells, and his grandfather, Troy Sorrells.
Harry Albers
Harry L. Albers, 76, of 111 W. 13th St. died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Kleine Funeral Home with the Rev. Bev Minor officiating.
There will be no visitation.
Mr. Albers was born
on Jan. 7, 1923, at East Berlin, Pa., to Andrew and Florence (Earhart) Slater. Harry and Nellie Albers of Seven Valleys, Pa., adopted him when he was 2 years old. He graduated from East Berlin High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Air Corps from 1942 until 1946 as a sergeant.
He received a degree in radio engineering in 1952 and was a member of the Radio Broadcasting Association. He was a radio engineer and broadcaster until retiring in 1980. He started the KMMJ polka show and hosted it until failing health forced him to stop in January.
He married Jessie Ortega on May 4, 1955, at Elko, Nev. They lived in Evanston, Wyo., where he worked as a chief engineer and announcer at KLOK-KEVA. In 1963, the family moved to Grand Island, where he worked at KHAS radio until 1968. He started working at KMMJ in 1968. He was honored by KMMJ in 1998 for 30 years of service on the air.
At the time of his death, he and his wife were living with their granddaughter, Jennifer and Kelly Williams, who were both instrumental in caring for him.
Survivors include his wife; one son, William Batey of Omaha; three daughters, Lark (Mrs. Bob) Gerguson of Geyserville, Calif., Lydia (Mrs. August "Gus") Roessler of Grand Island and Cinthia Albers of Rohnert Park, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Kenneth McWilliams and George Slater.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Michelle Meents and Vinson Batey; and one brother, Raymond.
Max Hickman
GREELEY -- Max D. Hickman, 76, formerly of Greeley, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln.
Services are pending at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Opal Houchin
ST. PAUL -- Opal M. Houchin, 86, of St. Paul died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Mrs. Houchin was cremated. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Thomas Hyde will officiate. Inurnment will be at Elmwood Cemetery at St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Paul EMT Unit.
Mrs. Houchin was born
on Sept. 5, 1912, on the family ranch in Boyd County. She was educated in Stuart.
She married Laurence Houchin on Aug. 29, 1929, at O'Neill. The couple first lived at Stuart in Holt County. They later moved to O'Neill, where she worked in cafes. They then moved to Chester, where she continued in cafe work. The couple moved to St. Paul in 1955. She first worked for Jacob's Cafe and later at the Bel-Air Motel. In 1966, she went to work for the St. Paul Veterinarian Clinic, where she helped with animal care and treatment.
Mrs. Houchin retired in 1985. She continued to live in St. Paul and entered the Heritage Living Center in June 1998.
She was a member of the Methodist faith. Her hobbies were greyhounds, ceramics, sewing and reading.
Survivors include two daughters, Wilma Held of Chambers and Marjorie Hayes of San Antonio; two sons, Larry of Williston, Fla., and Richard of Jacksonville, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Metta Everett of Atkinson.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Vern, Archie and Woody; and one sister, Jewel Hinrich.
Helen Nichols
OMAHA -- Helen M. Nichols, 71, of Omaha, formerly of Loup City, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, in Omaha.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Omaha. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 8 p.m., Friday at Staskiewicz Funeral Home in Omaha.
Mrs. Nichols was born
on March 31, 1928, at Loup City to Joseph and Pelagia (Schnase) Myszkowski.
Survivors include one daughter, Susan (Mrs. Timothy) Conner of Rapid City, S.D.; two sons, Michael Nichols and Patrick Nichols, both of Omaha; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey "Duke" Nichols.
Paul Hollister
NAPLES, Fla. -- Paul Edward Hollister, 58, of Naples, Fla., died July 14, 1999, at a nursing home in Naples following an extended illness.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Belgrade Main Cemetery in Belgrade with military rites. The Rev. Jim Howland will officiate.
Palmer Funeral Home of Fullerton is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hollister was born
on Dec. 3, 1940, at Milford. He was adopted by Morgan Edward and Olive May (Wagner) Hollister when he was 6 months old. He grew up in Lincoln.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1958 and made a career of military service, attaining the rank of sergeant first class. He was stationed at various locations around the world during his 20 years of military service. He served three tours in Vietnam.
He attended college while in the military and received a bachelor's degree in management.
He married Felicity Blunn on Sept. 26, 1960, in Lincoln. After his military service, he became a technical writer for several military-related firms.
Survivors include one daughter, Laura (Mrs. Jerry) Anderson of Alvord, Texas; a son, Mark Edward Hollister of Euless, Texas; and cousins, Ronald Christensen of Fullerton, Dennis Wagner of Central City, Ramona Harris of Greeley, Carlene Fyfe of Monroe, Pat Wagner-Stromberg of Albion and Donna Bailey of McCool Junction.
Darrell Enck
Darrell R. Enck, 71, of Grand Island died Friday, July 21, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at All Faiths Funeral Home. The Rev. Richard Karohl will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Ruth Hetrick
Ruth L. Hetrick, 77, of Grand Island, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services are pending at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Raine Rapp
Raine Joe Rapp, 15-day-old daughter of Billy J. and Morgan D. (Meyer) Rapp of Grand Island, died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at Children's Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home. The Rev. Martin Schmidt will officiate. Burial will be in Babyland at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to Children's Hospital or Rainbow House in Omaha.
Raine was born
on July 4, 2000, at Longmont, Colo.
Survivors include grandparents, Albert and Diane DeLeon, Tammy Johnson and Mark Johnson, all of Grand Island, and Ron and Robyn Meyer of Central City; great-grandparents, Betty Snyder of Alda, Pete DeLeon Sr., Hope DeLeon, Jerry and Joan Rapp and Gene and Barbara Meyer, all of Grand Island, and Darwin and Joan Risden of North Platte; and a great-great-grandmother, May Risden of Grand Island.
