Ruth Tucker
CONWAY, Ark. -- Ruth Skinner Tucker, 105, of Conway, Ark., died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at the Salem Place Nursing Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Roller-McNutt Chapel in Conway. Burial will be in the Thorn Cemetery in Greenbrier.
Roller-McNutt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Tucker was born
Dec. 24, 1894, to David and Ann (Glenn) Skinner at Greenbrier, Ark.
She married I.B. Tucker and was a housewife.
She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church of Greenbrier.
Survivors include two sons, Glen Tucker of Grand Island and Dennis Tucker of Guy, Ark.; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Steve Amack
Steve R. Amack, 44, of Grand Island died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln after a short illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Peace Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. John Kunze will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.
Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday at Kleine Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Robert Campbell
Robert Campbell, 85, of 247 S. Locust, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at his home.
Services are pending with Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Clara VanArsdale
Clara Null VanArsdale, 106, of Grand Island, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at her home.
Services are pending with Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Elida Vance
Elida A. Vance, 81, a resident of Tiffany Square, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Revs. Martin Schmidt and Terry Timm will officiate.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. A family prayer service will be at 9:45 a.m. Monday in the chapel of the church.
Memorials are suggested to Heartland Lutheran High School.
Mrs. Vance was born
Dec. 12, 1918, to August and Aina Elizabeth (Hirsvaskari) Nixon at Frederick, S.D. She grew up in Frederick, a town named after her grandfather, and attended high school in Aberdeen, S.D. She moved to Portland, Ore., after completing high school.
She married Irvin Egger in Portland in 1941. In 1960, she married Willmer Gravelle of Portland. He died in 1991. She married Donald Vance in 1994. The couple lived in Arlington, Wash., until spring 1999 when she moved to Tiffany Square in Grand Island due to failing health.
She was a nurses aid in Portland hospitals, enjoyed teaching Sunday school and using her crocheting skills contributed to church and school bazaars in Oregon.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island at the time of her death.
Survivors include her husband, Don Vance of Arlington, Wash.; three sons, Jan Egger of Seattle, Stan Egger of Stonewall, Okla., and Jim Gravelle of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Annette Rupprecht of Grand Island; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Everett Nixon of Vancouver, Wash.; five sisters, Florence Rathke, Marion Robertson, Lena McAllister and Edith Clark, all of Portland, and Rena Kern of Vancouver.
Other than her first two husbands, she was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Leslie Jorgensen
ST. PAUL -- Leslie C. Jorgensen, 88, of St. Paul, formerly of Farwell, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Heritage Living Center at St. Paul.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Jacobsen Funeral Home at St. Paul. The Rev. Larry Lepper will officiate. Burial will be in the Danish Lutheran Cemetery at Farwell.
There will be no visitation. Mr. Jorgensen was cremated.
Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army.
Mr. Jorgensen was born
June 21, 1911, at Farwell to Carsten and Elizabeth (Knoepfel) Jorgensen. He grew up in Farwell and attended school there. He began farming east of Farwell and farmed with his brother for all of his life.
He moved to St. Paul two and1Ž2 years ago and entered Heritage Living Center in 1999.
His hobbies including collecting items and fixing equipment.
Survivors are two nieces, Mariette (Mrs. Harlan) Horky and Sharon Garrison, both of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by two brothers Ernest and Glen and one sister, Mamie Michalek.
Allen Philips
KEARNEY -- Allen R. Philips, 68, of Kearney died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Minden. The Rev. Bill Hunter will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege, with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 759 in Kearney providing military rites.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 and 9 p.m. Sunday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden. Memorials are suggested to the Allen Philips Fund.
Mr. Philips was born
Aug. 14, 1929, to Floyd and Alice (Sewell) Philips on a farm south of Bertrand. He grew up near Bertrand and Alma, graduating from Alma High School in 1949. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the Korean War on the U.S.S. Chipola and also passed through the Panama Canal.
He married Vonda Helzer on Feb. 5, 1957. The couple lived in York, where he sold insurance for Don Robson, then moved in 1964 to McCook. He worked for Waecker, Elliott and Waecker as a feed salesman there until 1972, when he moved to Columbus.
He purchased Humphrey Feed Mill in Humphrey in 1972 and owned it until 1980. He also served as part owner of Club 81 in Humphrey during that time. He moved to Kearney in 1980 and managed Fort Kearny Inn until 1989.
He married Barbara Hanson on March 25, 1986.
He was a member of American Legion Post in Kearney, Kearney VFW and Kearney Elks.
He enjoyed playing cards, watching sports and going to Las Vegas.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Bradley of Columbus; one daughter, Paula (Mrs. Jim) Philips Nolan of Tampa, Fla.; three stepdaughters, Renee and Nicole Hanson, both of Dallas and Pamela Hessler of Lincoln; four stepgrandchildren and one sister, Carolyn Miller of Hastings.
Clareta Ita
COLUMBUS -- Clareta E. Ita, 91, of Columbus, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000 at the Schuyler Nursing Center in Schuyler.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Highland Park Evangelical Free Church in Columbus. The Rev. Mike Neely will officiate. Burial will be at the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Scotia. There will be a family prayer service at 9:45 a.m. at the church.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Gass-Haney Funeral Home in Columbus. Further visitation will be from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday at the church.
'Dick' Mattea
PAPILLION -- Richard H. "Dick" Mattea, 61, of Papillion, formerly of Fullerton, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at his home in Papillion.
Services will be at noon Monday at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Papillion. Burial will be at the Resurrection Cemetery in Omaha.
Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Kahler-Dolce Mortuary with a 6 p.m. wake service at the church.
Mr. Mattea was born
March 19, 1938, to Henry and Irene (Konert) Mattea in Fullerton. Mr. Mattea was a retired U.S. postal supervisor.
Survivors include his wife, Rosalie; three daughters, Elizabeth Mattea and Amy (Mrs. David) O'Brien, both of Omaha and Janette (Mrs. David) Sanderson of Papillion; two sons, Mark and Robert, both of Omaha; six grandchildren; and one sister, Maryann Buettner of Grand Island.
Corrinne Deutsch
Corrinne G. Deutsch, 95, of Sun City, Ariz., formerly of Clarks, died Jan. 6, 2000.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Clarks Cemetery in Clarks. The Rev. Richard Fairbanks will officiate.
Mrs. Deutsch was born
January 10, 1904 at Clarks to Fred and Myrtle (Wilson) Gilliard. She graduated from Clarks High School in 1921.
For several years she taught at a country school in Nebraska before moving to Chicago, Ill. and then Los Angeles, Calif.
In California she was employed at Union Pacific Railway. She retired from Union Pacific in the mid 1960s.
She married Alfred Deutsch. In the mid-1960s, the couple moved to Wickenburg, Ariz. where they lived until 1989 when she moved to a retirement community.
Survivors include her brother, Frank Gilliard of Oakland, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a baby sister, Frieda Mae and a brother, Clifford Gilliard.
Leona Engleman
WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Leona M. Engleman, 85, of Winter Park, Fla., formerly of Sweetwater, died Dec. 19, 1999.
Services were at Newcomer Funeral Home at Winter Park on Jan. 22. Burial was in the Palm Cemetery at Winter Park.
Mrs. Engleman was born
Aug. 8, 1914, at Sweetwater to Frank C. and Elizabeth (Peterson) Frink. She grew up on a farm near Hazard. She attended Hazard grade school. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1933.
She married Clyde F. Engleman on Nov. 3, 1934, in Loup City. The couple farmed until 1955, when they moved to Hazard and purchased the Capellen Gas Station and Tank Wagon. In 1967 the family moved to Ravenna and ran the Engleman's Conoco until retirement. She worked 10 years at the Cornhusker Ordnance Plant in Grand Island and two years at Baldwin's in Kearney.
She and her mother did wallpaper hanging from 1944 until 1955.
She was a member of the Ravenna Garden Club, Ravenna Masonic Lodge and Young at Heart Group of the First Christian Church. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Winter Park, Fla.
Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Fickes and Sherry Fitzgerald, three grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Velma Dale and one son, Jerry.
