Arthur Yeager
COLUMBUS -- Arthur Yeager, 64, of Columbus died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Gass-Haney Funeral Home in Columbus. The Rev. Richard Bringewatt will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery at Columbus.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Yeager was born
on May 10, 1935, at Sacramento, Calif., to Bill and Nellie Yeager. He lived in Grand Island for many years until moving to Columbus in 1987.
He was a truck driver for much of his life and enjoyed being outdoors and camping. He owned and operated the Country Long Branch Bar in Columbus from 1993 to 1996.
Survivors include one daughter, Cathy (Mrs. Brad) Platt of Lincoln; two sons, Jason of Columbus and Jeff of Lincoln; and two stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Linda Douma and Lillian Mochel.
1st Sgt. Joseph Schmeits
CHESTER, Va. -- 1st Sgt. Joseph Michael Schmeits, 41, of Chester, Va., died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Beaver Crossing. The Rev. Maurice Currant will officiate. Burial will be in Mound Prairie Cemetery at Goehner with military services by members of the U.S. Army Casualty Office at Fort Riley, Kan.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home in Beaver Crossing. A rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Further visitation will be one hour before services Monday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association and the American Liver Foundation.
Mr. Schmeits was born
on May 3, 1958, in Spalding to William "Bud" and Margaret Ruth (Cooper) Schmeits. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1976.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in June 1976. He took basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. His first assignment was at Fort Bragg, N.C.
He married Cynthia Glaser on Nov. 3, 1978, in Spalding. He received his associate's degree in liberal arts from Central Texas State College.
He served two three-year terms in Germany. He was also stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky.; White Sands, N.M.; Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Little Rock, Ark.; Fort Polk, La.; and Fort Lee, Va. His last duty was working in the training directorate at CASCOM at Fort Lee.
They had lived in Chester, Va., for five years.
He was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Colonial Heights, Va. He loved woodworking, working with new furniture and refinishing antique furniture for their home. He enjoyed spending time with his dogs, cooking and framing pictures.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Erica Rae and Jamie Michelle, both at home; his parents, of Goehner; three brothers, Bill of Longmont, Colo., Terry of Oxford and Tim of Wayne; and his parents-in-law, Bob and Patt Glaser of Spalding.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Dominic "Nick."
Lloyd Sorensen
BOURG, La. -- Lloyd L. Sorensen, 53, of Bourg, La., formerly of Grand Island, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000.
Services were Thursday at Samart Funeral Home in Houma, La. Burial was at Garden of Memories at Gray, La.
Mr. Sorensen was born
at Ewing to John C. and Frances Sorensen. He graduated from Page High School in 1964. He was a graduate of Central Community College in Hastings.
He served in the U.S. Air Force. He owned Dick's Heating and Air Conditioning in Grand Island. At the time of his death he was employed by Coastal Mechanical Contractor.
He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Grand Island.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Battenfield; his mother, Frances Wilson Sorensen of Grand Island; two sons, Kyle of Tehachapi, Calif, and Justin of Houma, La.; a brother, Floyd Sorensen of Grand Island; one sister, Norma Williams of Grand Island.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Sorensen.
Esther Tyler
CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- Esther Kate Tyler, 90, of Cheyenne, Wyo., died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Cheyenne.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Schrader Chapel in Cheyenne. The Rev. Vic Walter will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens at Cheyenne.
Memorials are suggested to Faith United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Tyler was born
June 20, 1909, at Grand Island.
She married James Tyler. Mr. Tyler preceded her in death.
She was a member of Order of Eastern Star-Oak Leaf Chapter 6, Union Pacific Oldtimers Auxiliary, Queen Esther Circle and Chapter 1 Retired Railroaders Employees Club.
She was affiliated with Faith United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Paul Tyler of Scottsbluff; and one sister, viola Compton of Junction City, Kan.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by one brother, Herman Niemoth and one sister, Lily Gunther.
Helen Oberschulte
Helen S. Oberschulte, 93, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church. The Rev. Daniel Bremer will officiate. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery at Worms.
Visitation will be at Kleine Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Oberschulte was born
Feb. 26, 1906, at Atlantic, Iowa, to Hinrich and Katherine (Wilshusen) Aldag. She was educated in Cass County, Iowa and lived in Atlantic, Iowa.
She married Fredrick Oberschulte on Dec. 4, 1928, at Atlantic, Iowa. They moved to Nebraska in 1928 and settled in Worms in 1929. Mr. Oberschulte died March 16, 1954. In 1955 she moved to Grand Island where she worked at Walklins Drug Store for 18 years, retiring in 1969. She moved to Merrick Manor in the late 1980s and in October 1994 to he Long-Term Care Center at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital.
She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Worms for many years, a charter member of the Dorcas Ladies Aid of Worms, which began in May 1930 and was the last surviving member.
She was also a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the Grace Guild of Grand Island. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, baking and cooking.
Survivors include one son, Melvin Oberschulte of Grand Island; two daughters, Lorraine Schleichardt and Marlene (Mrs. Leslie) Stark, both of Grand Island; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by one daughter, Evelyn; one grandchild; two brothers, Otto and Ernest; and her stepfather, Fred.
Clara Wilhelmi
Clara Wilhelmi, 83, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at Good Samaritan Center at Wood River.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kleine Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to St. Pauls Lutheran Senior Ministry.
Mrs. Wilhelmi was born
June 7, 1916, to John and Louise (Muller) Lorenzen at their farm home southwest of Grand Island.
She married Edward Wilhelmi on Feb. 4, 1934, at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island. They lived on the Wilhelmi farm northwest of Grand Island. Mr. Wilhelmi died July 18, 1979.
Mrs. Wilhelmi was an active partner in the farming operation. She enjoyed the great outdoors, spending time in her flower garden. She took pleasure in traveling, church and playing cards. She enjoyed collecting antiques and collectibles.
She was an active member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, was past Chairman of the Lutheran Church Women, and a member of Anna Circle. She also taught vacation Bible school and is a former member of the altar committee.
In 1963 and 1964, she received the Award of Merit from the American National Red Cross of Hall County. In 1969 she received the Hall County Farm Bureau distinguished Merit Award.
She was a member of the Merry Ladies Extension Club for 65 years and a lifelong member of the Platt-Duetsche Society, a member of KRVN radio station, Statesman Club, Golden Club and several cared playing groups.
She was a former member of the Grand Island Garden Study Club, Country Kensington Club, Liederkranz, was chairman of the Hall County Farm Bureau Women's Committee, 4-H leader for girls, Nebraska National Campers and Hikers Association, the swinging Islanderrs and the Goloden Trailblazers. She served on the Prairie Creek Election Board for 12 years.
Mrs. Wilhelmi was also superintendent of Open Class at the Hall County Fair for a number of years and served for six years on the Hall County Hall Clounty Extension Board for six years.
Survivors include two sons, Darryl G. Wilhelmi and Ralph E. Wilhelmi both of Grand Island; two daughters, Darlene (Mrs. Jerald) Smith of Munster, Ind. and Betty (Mrs. Michael) Hampton of O'Neill; one sister, Helen (Mrs. Harold) Pollock of Elwood; one brother, Lloyd Lorenzen of Farwell; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by one brother, Louis Lorenzen; twin daughters, Virginia and Velvajean; one son, Glen; and two grandchildren.
Larry Heaps
CAIRO -- Larry D. Heaps, 55, of Cairo died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Bev Minor will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Heaps was born
Sept. 14, 1944, at Broken Bow to Donald and lillie (Govier) Heaps. He grew up and attended school in Broken Bow.
He served in the U.S. Navy from May 22, 1962, until Feb. 19, 1965. He then continued serving in the Naval Reserve until Feb. 27, 1968.
He married Marlene Rutten on Oct. 20, 1967, in Grand Island. They lived in Grand Island and Mr. Heaps worked on various construction jobs. They lived in Wood river from 1977 to 1993 and lived near Cairo from 1993 to present. At the time of his death, Mr. heaps was employed by Leon Plastics in Alda.
He enjoyed fishing, football, boxing and NASCAR racing.
He was a member of VFW Post 1347 in Grand Island.
Survivors include his wife; one son, James D. Heaps of Wolbach; one daughter, Michelle A. Wengler of Augusta, Ark.; his mother of Smyrna, Tenn.; two brothers, Don Heaps of Lincoln and Charles "Dick" Heaps of Smyrna, Tenn.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Donald Heaps and an infant brother.
