Rollo Solomon
MINDEN -- Rollo Glen Solomon, 85, of Minden died Friday, March 17, 2000, at the Bethany Home in Minden.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Evangelical Free Church in Minden. The Rev. Jerry Classen will officiate. Burial will be at the Minden Cemetery with military rites by Minden American Legion Post 94.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Layton Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Progressive Supernuclear Palsy Foundation or the church.
Mr. Solomon was born
on Nov. 30, 1914, in Stitzer, Wis., to Joseph and Flora (Tubbs) Solomon. At the age of 2, he moved with his family to Maxwell. He graduated from Maxwell High School in 1933.
He farmed in Lincoln County until entering the Marine Corps in 1943. He served in the 1st Marine Division during World War II from October 1943 until February 1946 in the South Pacific islands. At the war's end, he was stationed in China.
He married Rhea Mae Hammans on April 27, 1947. They farmed northwest of Gibbon. He was recalled to service in Korea in January 1951. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. After his discharge, he returned to the farm. He retired in 1974 and moved to Minden. He entered the Bethany Home in October 1994.
He was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Minden, Minden American Legion Post 94 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and sports.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Melvin of Shelton; two daughters, Sheryl (Mrs. Roger) Lehman of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Adeda (Mrs. Steve) Younkin of Minden; six grandchildren; and two brothers, Lysle of Kearney and Orville of Ravenna.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, one grandson, three sisters and three brothers.
Foster Hansen
MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Foster S. Hansen, 87, of Manhattan, Kan., formerly of Grand Island, died Monday, March 20, 2000, in Manhattan.
Services are pending at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island.
Ed Underhill
MESA, Ariz. -- Ed "Swede" Underhill, 90, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Stromsburg and Grand Island, died Friday, March 17, 2000, in Mesa, Ariz.
Memorial services were on Monday in Mesa. Burial will be at a later date in Bellingham, Wash.
Mr. Underhill was born
on Feb. 7, 1910, at Stromsburg to Ray and Hilma (Peterson) Underhill. He graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1926.
While he lived in Grand Island, he owned the Auto Hospital, a body and fender business.
He married Irene LeMaster in 1936. They moved to Bellingham, Wash., in 1944. He taught his profession at the community college there. Mrs. Underhill died in 1969.
Mr. Underhill married Verneena Needham in 1970. When they retired, they built a home in Mesa, Ariz.
He liked playing golf, pool and dancing.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Dale; two daughters, Jean Ann (Mrs. Richard) Buchanan and Jerre Kay (Mrs. Fred) Nolte; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Vena D. (Mrs. Ivan) Paace of Grand Island, Shirley (Mrs. Dale) Wallen of Syracuse and Joan (Mrs. Doyle) Bray of Hanford, Calif.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Linda Kaminski
Linda L. Kaminski, 59, of Grand Island died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry Quandt will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice or to cancer research.
Ms. Kaminski was born
on Feb. 24, 1941, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Charles and Dorothy (Loveless) Bumgarner. She grew up in Iowa and then moved to California. She graduated from El Cajon Valley, Calif., High School. After her education, she returned to Nebraska, where she worked for Omaha Steaks.
She married LaVern Kaminski on March 15, 1969, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She moved to Cairo, where she lived for a short time, and then moved to Grand Island. She worked at Monfort and also owned a cleaning business.
She then owned and operated the Stockman's Café from 1986 until 1991. At the time of her death, she was employed by R&N Concessions, where she managed the 4-H Café at Fonner Park.
Her hobbies included crocheting and gardening. She loved animals.
Survivors include one son, Mike Kaminski of Omaha; one brother, Ronnie Bumgarner; four sisters, Gloria Fanning of Omaha, Phyllis Richards of Polk City, Iowa, Margaret Ricio and Cheryl Hoch of Iowa; and a special friend, Eldon Muhs of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Marilyn Ripperger.
Herman Seibold
Herman Seibold, 98, of the Nebraska Veteran's Home in Grand Island, died Thursday, March 16, 2000 at the Nebraska Veteran's Home.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the Worldwide Church of God in Grand Island. Mr. Fred Davis will officiate. Burial will be in the Burkett Cemetery on the grounds of the Nebraska Veteran's Home.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island.
Mr. Seibold was born
Sept. 1, 1901, in Fellbch, Germany to Paul and Pauline (Bauerly) Seibold. He received his education in Germany and was trained as a machinist. He was a member of the German Youth Reserve during World War I.
He came to the U.S. at the age of 20 to farm with his uncle near Curtis. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving from September of 1942 until his discharge in March of 1943. He lived on the farm near Curtis until coming to Grand Island to the Nebraska Veterans Home in February 1994.
Mr. Siebold was a member of the Worldwide Church of God. He played in musical bands. He loved playing the harmonica.
Survivors include one niece, Rosey Witwer of McCook and a nephew, Erwin Beck of Fremont.
Christian Sorensen
Christian L. Sorensen, 86, of 3111 College St. No. 15 died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Nysted Evangelical Church. The Revs. Donald Voorhees and Douglas Stensby will officiate. Burial will be in the Nysted Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island or the Nysted Evangelical Church.
Mr. Sorensen was born
on Dec. 19, 1913, at Boelus to Emil and Maren (Rasmussen) Sorensen. He was educated in Howard and Lincoln counties and attended high school at Moorfield and Callaway.
He then farmed with his brother Hjalmer near Cairo. He later farmed near Marysville, Mo. He then returned to Howard County and continued to farm with his brother.
He married Mildred Bridges on Feb. 9, 1968, at Alma, Kan. The couple lived south of St. Paul on a farm.
Mr. Sorensen continued to farm with his brother until the farm was sold in the late 1970s.
He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island.
Survivors include his wife; and two stepsons, Larry of St. Paul and Marvin of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Aage and Hjalmer; and one sister, Marie Rosenfelt.
Betty Trueman
Betty A. (Sandquist) Trueman, 45, of Grand Island, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha after a bout with leukemia.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Stolley Park Church of Christ at 2822 W. Stolley Park Road. A luncheon will follow the service. There will be no visitation or burial.
Mrs. Trueman was born
Nov. 22, 1954, to Wesley and Jeanie (James) Sandquist at Grand Island. She graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1973.
She married Arden Trueman on Dec. 29, 1973, and the couple lived in Grand Island. She enjoyed working in the garden and spending time with her grandsons and family.
Prior to her illness she was a teacher at Head Start in Grand Island.
Mrs. Trueman was a member of the Stolley Park Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Ryan of Wood River, Travis of Greeley, Colo. and Andrew of Hastings; one daughter, Sally of Grand Island; three grandsons; two brothers, Wesley and William of Grand Island; six sisters, Jeanie "Patty" Nouzovsky, Mary Mulinix and Judy Platt, all of Grand Island, Doris Michalski of Chapman, Dwyla Osborn of Sedgwick, Colo. and Amy Pennington of The Colony, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Hattie Goodwin
RAVENNA -- Hattie Goodwin, 95, of Ravenna died Thursday, March 16, 2000 at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ravenna with the Rev. Steven Schlund officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Park Cemetery in Ravenna.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Goodwin was born
on March 15, 1905 in Sherman County to William and Mary (Kohls) Hohlfeld. She received her education in the Sherman County area.
She married Felix H. Goodwin June 28, 1943, in Loup City. The couple lived north of Poole. Mrs. Goodwin moved to Ravenna in 1957.
She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; stepdaughter; four brothers; and two sisters.
