Verla Wicks
COLUMBUS -- Verla M. Wicks, 81, of Columbus, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at the Colonial Manor in Clarkson.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 2 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus. Father Chris Grimmond will officiate.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 8 to 10 a.m. at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus with a vigil on Monday at 7 p.m. also at McKown Funeral Home.
Burial will be in St. Bonayenture Cemetery directly after the service
Wicks was born
on January 22, 1919, at Anselmo to William and Mary (Schmidt) McDermott. She received her education at Anselmo and graduated from Anselmo High School. She received her teachers certificate from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
She married Reynold Wicks on August 8, 1945, at Clovis, New Mexico. The couple lived in Central Nebraska and in Denver Colo. where she was a school teacher and homemaker before retiring to Columbus in 1981.
She was a member of St. Anthony Church in Columbus, and the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Lois (Mrs. Jack) Schmitz of Clarkson; two sons, Jerry Wicks of Canistota, S.D., and Joe Wicks of Grand Island; one sister, Ellen McDermott of Colorado Springs, Colo; five grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by six brothers.
Richard Becker
Richard W. "Dick" Becker, 63, of Grand Island died Friday, April 28, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, Sunday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Becker was born
on Nov. 1, 1936, at Grand Island to Edward and Bregida (Sack) Becker. He grew up in Grand Island and attended Grand Island public schools.
He married Beverly DeVore on April 24, 1956, at Wood River. He worked for Nehi Bottling Co. from 1956 to 1958, for Fairacres Dairy from 1958 to 1973 and for Gooch Foods from 1973 until he retired in 1994.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Eagles Aerie 378 and the Saddle Club.
Survivors include is wife; two daughters, Marilyn (Mrs. Dennis) Korgel of Grand Island and Diana Webster of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one son, Rick Becker of Lincoln; six grandsons; his mother, of Grand Island; and two sisters, Dorothy Caudill of Grand Island and Joyce Fotinos of Wood River.
He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Lyle Becker and an infant brother.
Rosemary Mullen
Rosemary J. Mullen, 69, of Grand Island died Friday, April 28, 2000, at St. Francis Skilled Care.
Service are pending with Curran Funeral Chapel.
Cecil Paxton
Cecil Lee Paxton, 51, of Grand Island died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, as the result of a car accident in Beaver City.
Mr. Paxton was cremated.
There were no services.
Mr. Paxton was born
on Aug. 28, 1948, at O'Neill to Norman and Mary Joyce (Thornton) Paxton. He grew up and attended school at Chambers.
He was an over-the-road truck driver.
He liked to tinker with things.
Survivors include one son, Cecil Eugene Paxton of Grand Island; two daughters, Mary Joyce Paxton of Sedalia, Mo., and Tammy of California; two grandchildren; one sister, Norma Joyce Smith of Grand Island; and one brother, Robert James Paxton of Palmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Adam Sokol
Adam R. Sokol, 93, of Grand Island died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday with a 7 p.m. wake service at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sokol was born
Dec. 16, 1906 at Platte Center to Thomas and Kathryn (Gonka) Sokol. He grew up in Boone, Nance and Sherman Counties and attended school at Platte Center and Loup City Schools.
He married Carolyn Schachta on Feb. 4, 1936, at Loup City. The couple farmed in the Loup City area until 1959 when they moved to Clarks, where they continued to farm. In 1973 he retired and the couple moved to Grand Island.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a former member of Knights of Columbus and Holy Name Society.
He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and playing cards.
Survivors include his wife and one daughter, Gertrude "Trudy" (Mrs. Charles) Lazure of Omaha.
He was preceded in death by one son, Richard; six brothers, John, Charles, Joseph, Pete, Philip and Martin and four sisters, Virginia Sokol, Rose Ahrens, Cecilia Valasek and Julia Oseka.
'Bob' Bohnart
SHELTON -- Robert L. "Bob" Bohnart, 62, of rural Shelton, died Friday, April 28, 2000, at the Veterans Hospital in Grand Island.
Services are pending with the Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River.
Geneva Bowers
BURWELL -- Geneva Bowers, 95, of Burwell died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in Burwell. The Rev. Rolly Salts will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the family to be used for a children's organization.
Mrs. Bowers was born
on May 24, 1904, at Burwell to William and Emma (Hughes) Nelson. She attended Garfield County schools and graduated from Burwell High School. She attended Kearney State Teachers College.
She taught school in the last sod school house in the county.
She married Samuel Bowers on Sept. 27, 1930, at Stanton. They lived and ranched in the Burwell area all their lives. Mr. Bowers died on June 19, 1969.
Mrs. Bowers attended the Assembly of God Church and was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Community Club and the Workers Group Church Circle. She enjoyed livestock, horses, sewing, quilting and cooking.
Survivors include two sons, Delmar Bowers of Taylor and Sterling Bowers of Burwell; 14 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Darlene Larson; two brothers; and one sister.
'Bill' Douglas
SUN CITY WEST, Ariz. -- William "Bill" Douglas, 74, of Sun City West, Ariz., formerly of Clarks, died Friday, April 28, 2000, at Del West Hospital in Sun City West.
Services are pending with Solt Funeral Home in Central City.
Francis Forsberg
McCOOK -- Francis A. Forsberg, 73, of McCook died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at the McCook Community Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McCook. The Rev. Ted Okland will officiate. Burial will be in Mamry Cemetery in Marquette.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Herrmann Funeral Home in McCook is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Forsberg was born
on Feb. 9, 1927, at Grand Island to Arthur William and Marvia (Carlson) Forsberg. He grew up on a farm near Marquette and graduated from Marquette High School in 1945.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Dorothy Prinzing on April 21, 1956, at Denver. They lived near Marquette. He semiretired from farming in 1984. Mrs. Forsberg died on April 28, 1987. Mr. Forsberg worked for C.C. Westgate in Central City from 1986 to 1992.
He married Donna Westergren on April 4, 1998, at Benkelman. They moved to McCook.
He was a member of the Mamre Evangelical Free Church in Marquette and a member of Gideons International since 1955. He became a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McCook.
Survivors include his wife, Donna; two sons, Kent Forsberg of Lubbock, Texas, and Andy Forsberg of Marquette; three grandchildren; and one sister, Fern Fogland of North Platte.
He was preceded in death by two infant daughters and an infant brother.
Herman Kruml
BURWELL -- Herman John Kruml, 72, of Burwell died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell. The Rev. Rolly Salts will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell.
Visitation will be one hour before services Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Sargent Nebraska American Legion or the Taylor Nebraska V.F.W.
Mr. Kruml was born
on March 29, 1928 at Sargent to Albert and Josephine (Sindclar) Kruml. He attended Shady Hollow District 154 School.
He joined his brothers in farming a ranch bought from their father in 1946. The ranch, known as the Kruml Brothers 1-7 Ranch, ran cattle and general livestock operations and crop farming.
He was drafted in 1952 into the U.S. Army and went through officers training in Frankfort, Germany. He became ill before he could finish his training there. After the Army he continued farming with his brothers until 1995.
He enjoyed music, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include three sisters, Minnie Prucha of Burwell, Barbara Hulinsky of Burwell and Mildred Roth of Comstock and one brother, Elmer of Taylor.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
