Edward Panowicz
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Edward Panowicz, 77, of Portland, Ore., formerly of Comstock, died Oct. 17, 1999.
Services were at St. Rita's Catholic Church. Little Chapel of the Chimes-Gateway was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Grotto of Portland.
Mr. Panowicz was born
on Jan. 31, 1922, in Comstock. He grew up in the Comstock area. He was interested in sports, Indian relics, gems, minerals and fossils as a boy and had his first basement museum at the age of 12. He graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1941 and left for California to work in defense jobs.
He joined the service on Oct. 5, 1942, and was a radar man on the USS Coronado in the 7th Fleet in New Guinea and the Philippines. While in the South Pacific, he began to collect seashells, coral and native artifacts.
After the war, he married Norma Chalupsky. He was in the furniture business in Omaha and O'Neill until he opened Ed's House of Gems in June 1956 in Portland, Ore.
He was a member of St. Rita's Catholic Church and the Veterans' and Sportsman's Club. He was a longtime supporter of Boys Town.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Frank, John and Joe, all of Portland; one daughter, Mary Redd of Portland; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Mary Lou Dakan
Mary Lou Dakan, 64, of Grand Island, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at the Lakeview Nursing Center. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. She was cremated and there will be no visitations.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island is in charge of arrangements.
Ms. Dakan was born
Feb. 15, 1936, at Fullerton to William and Frances (Milliner) Dakan. She was raised and educated in Fullerton.
She was employed at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant for 13 years.
She later worked at the Hudson Oil Company for 16 years where she managed gas stations in Columbus and Grand Island. She worked at McCain Foods until her retirement in 1998.
Her hobbies included going to horse races and spending time with her pets.
Survivors include three brothers, Donald of Lincoln, Ronald of Gary, Ind., Everett of Homeland, Calif., and a half-brother, Morris McIntyre of Dallas, Texas; and two sisters, Ruth Ponder of Pleasenton, Calif., and Betty Friedrichsen of Grand Island.
Wilford Steffen
SCOTIA -- Wilford Steffen, 86, of Scotia died July 29, 2000, at the Greeley Care Home in Greeley.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Scotia. The Rev. Mark Middendorf will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery. The Rueben Beck American Legion Post 150 will perform the flag folding ceremony.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Zion Lutheran Church.
Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Steffen was born
Dec. 20, 1913, at Waco to William and Wilhelmine (Wiemken) Steffen. He attended St. John's Parochial School in Waco and moved with the family to North Loup in 1928. Mr. Steffen moved to Idaho in 1936 before joining the Army in 1941.
Mr. Steffen served in Europe and was discharged in 1945. In 1953, he moved from Idaho to Scotia where he worked in auto and general repair with his brother in Steffen's Garage. He retired in 1986 and continued to live in Scotia until entering the Greeley Care home in October 1999.
He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Scotia and the National Rifle Association.
He enjoyed woodworking and being outdoors.
He is survived by four brothers, Loren of Scotia, Herbert of Hastings, Erwin of Bellevue, and Marvin of Casper, Wyo.
Billie Switzer
ST. PAUL -- Billie Switzer, 73, of St. Paul died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services are pending at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Evertt Woeppel
ERICSON -- Evertt Richard Woeppel, 87, of Ericson died July 28, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Ericson. Burial will be at 1 p.m. at Cedar Rapids. The Rev. Jurdan Counts will officiate.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the United Methodist Church.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mr. Woeppel was born
August 11, 1912, to Richard and Mary (Learch) Woeppel at Ewing. He was raised on a farm in the Ewing area and later worked on wells in Wheeler County.
On March 12, 1941, he married Marie Teresa Van Cleave at the United Methodist Parsonage in Ericson.
He enlisted in the Air Force in 1942, serving during World War II, and was discharged in 1946 at the rank of corporal.
With his wife, Mr. Woeppel ran the Ericson Locker for 22 years. A heart attack in 1976 forced his retirement.
He also served two terms as the mayor of Ericson.
Mr. Woeppel was active in the American Legion, senior citizens groups and placed the flag every day beside the Ericson fire hall. He enjoyed gardening and was a janitor for the Ericson State Bank.
He was preceded by two sisters and eight brothers.
Jerry Coplen
HARVARD -- Jerry L. Coplen, 44, of Harvard died Saturday, July 29, 2000, near Harvard in a car accident.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Christ in Harvard with the Rev. Stan Crawford will officiate. Memorial services will also be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Wolbach with Crawford officiating. There will be a private family burial at Hillside Cemetery in Wolbach.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice or the Women's Fellowship. Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Coplen was born
Feb. 8, 1956, at Fullerton to Aaron and Lillian (Dasher) Coplen. He graduated from Wolbach High School in 1974.
He was employed by the Lemmerman Hatchery in Palmer, the Western Landroller in Hastings and the Trumbull Coop.
For the past 10 years, Mr. Coplen was employed by Aurora Coop. He was also an assistant softball coach.
He married Marla Wahl in 1985.
On Sept. 16, 1989, he married Esther Hiebert in Henderson. The couple made their home in Harvard.
He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Harvard.
He enjoyed camping, water skiing and football.
Survivors include his wife, Esther of Harvard; three daughters, Lillian, Lena and Jeri, all at home; his mother, Lillian of Scotia; seven sisters, Linda (Mrs. Jim) Moores of Scotia, Kathy (Mrs. Mike) Conroy of Chesapeake Beach, Md., Debbie (Mrs. LeRoy) Keeler of Aurora, Brenda Coplen of Palmer, Donna Coplen of North Platte, Teresa Coplen of Wolbach and Connie (Mrs. Johnny) Lopez of Schyler; and a brother, Ray of Central City.
He was preceded in death by his father, Aaron; and two brothers, Dennis and Jimmy.
'Merv' Evans
LOUP CITY -- Mervin 'Merv' Evans, 69 of Loup City died Thursday, July 27, 2000, while traveling through Canada. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City with the Rev. Reginald A. Urban will officiate.
Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City. A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City.
Mr. Evans was born
July 22, 1931, at Home Gardens, Calif., to Leland and Twila (Bray) Evans. He grew up and attended school in Arcadia.
He married Geraldine A. Kowalewski on Feb. 6, 1951, in Loup City. The couple lived in Ravenna, Loup City and Arcadia before moving to Omaha in 1956. They returned to Loup City in 1994.
He worked for State Farm Insurance as an agent, for the Kansas, Nebraska Natural Gas Company, for Roberts Dairy and as a wholesale hardware salesman for Paxton/Gallagher.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Larry of Loup City and Randy of Omaha; one daughter, Cynthia Wozniak of Omaha; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Norman of Vian, Okla.; and one sister, Corrine Wroblewski of Loup City.
Daniel Poppen
LINCOLN -- Daniel Edward Poppen, 59, of Lincoln died Saturday, July 29, 2000.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Lincoln. The Rev. Michael Neidow will officiate. Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
No visitation will take place, as Mr. Poppen will be cremated.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Poppen was born
May 18, 1941, at Worthington, Minn., to Herman and Melvina (Christens) Poppen.
He worked at Hy-Vee for 16 years, with seven of those as a manager. He was also a supervisor at Nash Finch for 10 years.
He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed antique auctions, fishing and watching movies.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis (Wiese) Poppen of Lincoln; two sons, Todd of Grand Island and Troy of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Kari (Mrs. Tom) Garton of Daykin; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two sisters, Diane (Mrs. Mike) Ryan of Chicago, Ill. and Donna (Mrs. Kenny) Hammon of Worthington, Minn.; and two brothers, Dave of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Morris of Lake Park, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Donald Elznic Sr.
GENEVA -- Donald J. Elznic Sr., 72, of Geneva died Thursday, July 27, 2000, in Geneva.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva. The Rev. Kim Dunker will officiate. Graveside services will be held at Geneva Public Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at noon Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Elznic was born
May 3, 1928, at Geneva to James and Agnes (Kral) Elznic.
He was a Korean War veteran.
Survivors include three sons, Donald J. Elznic Jr. of Salem, Ore., Tim Elznic of Geneva and Joe Elznic of Geneva; a daughter, Karla (Mrs. Frank) Slezak of Grand Island; a brother, Gary Elznic of Geneva; six grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.
