Clifford Philby
Oxford, 93

GRAND ISLAND - Clifford Philby, 93, of Oxford died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Beverly Healthcare Park Place in Grand Island.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Oxford with the Rev. Ken Breinig officiating. Burial will be at Oxford Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m. at Mitchell-Nelson Funeral Home in Oxford.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association.

He was born icon Nov. 21, 1909, in Bridgeport to James and Minnie (Schlimm) Philby.

The family moved several times before settling near Mascot, where he attended school until the eighth grade.

He worked to help support the family.

He worked for Diamond Engineering of Grand Island building guardrails and building roads. He drove a gasoline transport truck and was in the Civilian Conservation Corps doing forestry when the 1935 flood devastated the Republican Valley.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941 until the end of World War II. He was stationed in Australia and New Guinea doing tech supply.

On Jan. 5, 1945, he married Velma Robbins in Arapahoe. They lived at Gowen Field, Idaho, until he was discharged from the military.

They moved to Oxford. He worked as the power plant operator for 29 years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, building and fixing things, spending time with family, and traveling.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Jim of Hastings and Richard of Oxford; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Clysta Mott
Hazard resident, 57

HAZARD - Clysta V. Mott, 57, of Hazard died Monday, June 2, 2003, at her home.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ansley Cemetery.

Visitation will be until 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until noon Wednesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Traumatic Brain Injury Institute.

Walter Puls
Elwood resident, 86

LEXINGTON - Walter Henry Puls, 86, of Elwood died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood with the Rev. Kenton Birtell officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Elwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Elwood American Legion Post 290 Scholarship Fund.

Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge of arrangements.

He was born icon Nov. 10, 1916, in Frontier County to Henry and Anna (Jorges) Puls.

He attended school in Frontier and Gosper counties.

He worked on the farm then served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1943.

On Oct. 17, 1943, he married Ailene Warnsing near Elwood.

They lived on a farm south of Eustis until 1955, when they moved to Elwood.

They operated Elwood Care for several years. He worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads. He retired in 1981 after 24 years of service.

His wife died in October 1969.

In 1972, he married Clara Strong. She also preceded him in death.

He was a member of the church in Elwood and a 49-year member of the Elwood American Legion.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, winemaking, doing odd jobs and watching the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He attended several bowl games.

Survivors include his son, James of Elwood; daughter, Carol Robison of Kearney; sisters, Vera Gates of Arapahoe, Dorothy Marshall of Gothenburg and Detta Shirley of Maywood; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by four brothers.

Truman Ludlow
Eddyville resident, 82

EDDYVILLE - Truman H. Ludlow, 82, of Eddyville died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at his home.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell with Chaplain Norval Holtmeier officiating. Military rites will be by the North Platte Veterans Group.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials are suggested to the Central Plains Hospice of Cozad.

O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

He was born icon April 10, 1921, in Monument, Kan., to Frank and Ethel (Pettigrew) Ludlow.

He attended school in Oakley, Kan.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1941 and served during World War II.

On Dec. 6, 1945, he married Pearl Bayne in Colby, Kan.

They lived in Oakley for one year. Later, they moved to North Platte. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad for 30 years.

He was a member of the Eddyville Grace United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the North Platte Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

The couple were members of the Oldtimers R&R Association. They enjoyed traveling in their RV to Port Isabel each winter.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, June of Lincoln; sister, Goldie Wright of Oakley; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter and two brothers.

Glendis Sayer
Cozad resident, 61

LEXINGTON - Glendis Elaine Sayer, 61, of Cozad died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lexington United Methodist Church with the Rev. Todd Karges officiating.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Oberlin (Kan.) Cemetery.

Visitation will be until 8 p.m. today at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.

Memorials are suggested to Dawson County 4-H.

She was born icon March 26, l942, in Oberlin to Glenn and Edna (Pavlicek) Mott.

She graduated from Decatur (Kan.) Community High School in 1960.

She graduated from Fort Hays (Kan.) State with a teaching degree.

She taught for several years at Norcatur, Kan., and in Wilsonville and Arapahoe.

On July 29, 1962, she married George Sayer in Oberlin.

They moved to the Lexington/Cozad area in 1968.

She worked for Kugler Feedlot and Pamida as a secretary. She then worked in the Gosper County Clerk's Office for several years. She worked for Marty Romero in Lexington.

She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America for more than 50 years, the church, where she taught Sunday school, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Better Homes and Gardens Extension Club. She worked with many 4-H'ers. She volunteered with Volunteer Income Tax Assistant for several years.

She enjoyed bowling and had belonged to the Lexington Bowling Association, the Monday Dizzy Double League and Eye Opener Wednesday morning league. She bowled in the State Bowling Tournament for 18 years. She enjoyed spending time with family.

Survivors include her husband; sons: Gary of McCook, Gregg of Cambridge and Glenn of Gothenburg; her mother of Oberlin; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Hazel Divan
Holdrege resident, 100

HOLDREGE - Hazel Divan, 100, of Holdrege died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Holdrege Memorial Home.

Arrangements are pending at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.
