Jack H. Etter, 89, of Lake Panasoffkee, Florida died Sunday September 7, 2003 in Florida.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2003, 10:00 A.M. at the Columbus Cemetery with Rev. Bill Ritter officiating.

JACOB PAUL LOUIS

Jacob P. Louis, 85, of Columbus, Nebraska, died October 20, 2000 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Services are Tuesday, October 24, 2000 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with the Rev.'s Richard Bringewatt and Roland A. Jank officiating. Interment will follow at the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. Monday, October 23, 2000 at Gass Haney Funeral Home and will continue on Tuesday from 9:30 A.M. until service time at the church. Memorials are suggested to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Donors Choice.

Jacob Paul Louis, 85, was born icon June 17, 1915 in Columbus, Nebraska, to George and Isis (Tripp) Louis, grandson of Jacob Louis, one of the 13 original founders of the Columbus Township. He attended school District #9 in rural Columbus and then attended the Business School of Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in Omaha.
On June 17, 1940, Jacob married Lucy Meinke in Ogallala, Nebraska. They resided all their life on the farm established by his father and mother east of Columbus. Together Jacob and Lucy farmed the land and raised their five children there. Jacob also worked as the credit manager of Firestone Tire & Rubber Company and served as the Paymaster of the Nebraska Defense Corp in Mead, Nebraska.
Jacob served as President of District #9 school for 21 years, was a member of the Rural Fire Board, past President of the Farmers Union and was a Field Supervisor for the State of Nebraska ASCS Committee. He was a member and past Chairman of the Platte County ASCS Committee for 20 years. Jacob was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Laymen's League.
He was a well-known and giving member of his community. He was proud to be a descendant of one of the founders of Columbus and supported the local Historical Society. He was a willing helper to his neighbors and friends and enjoyed their fellowship. His extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins were very dear to him and he will be sorely missed by all.

Alwine M. Larsen

Alwine M. Larsen, 84, of Columbus, Nebraska, died February 23, 2001 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Services will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Columbus, NE on Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Roland A. Jank officiating. Interment will be at the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus.
Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Monday, February 26, 2001, from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at church on Tuesday, February 27, 2001, from 9:30 AM until service time. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 AM on Tuesday at the church.

Alwine M. Larsen, was born icon June 8, 1916 in rural Leigh, Nebraska to William J. and Mathilda (Cattau) Korte. She attended school in the Leigh area. As a young lady, she helped raise her younger brothers and sisters and did part-time work as a maid. On November 12, 1939, Alwine married Harold Larsen in Columbus. They moved to Idaho and lived there for four years. They moved back to Columbus in 1943.
Alwine was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and for many years a member of the church choir. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother when her children were young, enjoyed playing cards, crocheting and baking.

Elva D. Luchsinger

Elva D. Luchsinger, 94, of Escondido, California, died Thursday, November 1, 2001 in Escondido. Graveside services will be held at Columbus Cemetery, Columbus, Nebraska, on Thursday, November 15, 2001 at 10:30 AM with the Rev. Don Wilson officiating.

Elva was born icon December 21, 1906 in Auburn, Nebraska to John T. and Elbertie (Kent) Redding. She married Fred Luchsinger on October 8, 1927 in Syracuse, Nebraska. They lived in Columbus, Nebraska until 1948. They moved to San Gabriel, CA where Mr. Luchsinger was associated with the United California Bank as a trust officer. They retired in 1972 and moved to Escondido. Memorials may be directed to the donors choice.

Royal S. Clark

Royal S. Clark, 91, of Lincoln, Nebraska died Saturday, July 06, 2002 at Milder Manor in Lincoln. Services will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at 10:30 AM with Pastor Roy Miller from the Faith Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Lincoln officiating. Interment will be at the Columbus Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM.

Royal S. Clark was born icon May 23, 1911 in Davenport, Iowa, to Oliver G. & Mabell (Sanford) Clark. He graduated from Columbus High School and then attended Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. Royal then went to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated in 1937, with a degree in Civil Engineering. On August 8, 1936, he married Evelyn Moffitt in Lincoln, Nebraska. After graduation, Royal went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, Nebraska as a draftsman. In 1938 he moved to Columbus where he became the Platte County Highway Commissioner and County Surveyor until 1941. In 1941 Royal joined the Loup Power District Electrical Department as a draftsman. He later transferred to the Loup Hydraulic Department where he worked his way up to Chief Hydraulic Engineer of the district and retired in 1973. Royal and his wife Evelyn also owned and operated the Handy Grocery Store in Columbus from 1953 until 1963. In 1995 Royal moved to the Brentwood Estates in Lincoln. After Evelyn's death on July 31, 2000, Royal moved to the Milder Manor in Lincoln.
Royal was a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of Nebraska. He was a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, formerly a member of the Nebraska Society of Professional Engineers, and the International Association for Hydraulic Research. Royal was a member of the Lebanon Lodge #323 AF & AM, and formerly a member of the Elks Club, Columbus Chamber of Commerce, Sertoma Club, and the Columbus Jaycees. Royal enjoyed traveling, target shooting, and game bird hunting. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Columbus Rifle Club.

Robert W. Lake

Robert W. Lake, 55, of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at his home. Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Columbus, Nebraska on Friday, August 02, 2002 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Timothy White officiating. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Honor Guard Hartman Post 84. A private family interment will be at the Leigh City Cemetery in Leigh, Nebraska at a later date.
Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Thursday from 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM with a family prayer service at 10:15 AM. Memorials are suggested to the Columbus Area Recreational Trails or Donors Choice.
Robert W. Lake was born icon November 9, 1946 in Columbus, Nebraska to Robert R. and Evelyn (Gernstein) Lake. He graduated from Leigh High School, Leigh, Nebraska. He attended Norfolk Jr. College in Norfolk, Nebraska where he played football and was on the track team. He then attended Kearney State College, Kearney, Nebraska where he was on the track team and a starter on the football team. He graduated from Kearney State College in 1970.
On April 21, 1970 he entered the US Army and served two tours in Vietnam before being honorably discharged on November 11, 1971. He and Ellen Zimmerman were then married on December 22, 1971 at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Columbus. Robert received his Masters of Education Degree from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley in 1976. For seven years he taught school in Randolph, Nebraska. In 1979 he began his teaching career at Lakeview High School in Columbus, retiring on May 23, 2002. At Lakeview High School, Robert taught Biology, Physiology, was a football, basketball and track coach. He also worked with the weight training program.
Robert enjoyed biking, hiking, mountain climbing, skiing, roller blading and studying WWII history. Robert was a member of the following organizations: twenty-five year member of the Nebraska Coaches Association, Nebraska State Education Association, National Education Association, American Legion Hartman Post 84, life member of the VFW Post 3704, Fraternal Order of Eagles - AERIE 1834, B.P.O.E. - Elks, AYSO Soccer Coach, KTLX Radio Operator, volunteer site coordinator and donor for the American Red Cross Blood Drive, and was a supporter and volunteer for the Columbus Area Recreational Trails. He loved spending time with his family and friends.

Erna F. Leffers

Erna F. Leffers, 95, of Columbus, Nebraska died Thursday, June 13, 2002 at the Countryside Home in Madison, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be Monday, June 17, 2002, 10:30 A.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Roland Jank officiating. Interment will be at St. John's Cemetery, rural Columbus. Visitation is on Sunday, June 16, 2002 from 3:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Monday, June 17, 2002 from 9:30 - 10:30 A.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 10:15 A.M.

Erna F. Leffers was born icon August 7, 1906 in Platte County, Nebraska to O. Henry and R. Theda (Berends) Johnson. Erna attended school at St. John's Lutheran School in rural Platte County. On August 15, 1935, Erna married Walter Leffers at St. John's Lutheran Church. She lived her entire life in the Platte County area and worked for 20 years in the Columbus City Schools lunch program. Erna was active in the church and was a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.
