MILLARD "TOMMY" THOMPSON
Millard 'Tommy' Thompson, 75, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, November 12, 2000 at his residence.
Services are Thursday, November 16, 2000; 10:30 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus, Nebraska with Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 A.M. at the church. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post 84. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 15, 2000 from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and Thursday, November 16, 2000 from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. at the church.
Millard E. "Tommy" Thompson was born
August 10, 1925 in Polk County, Nebraska to Millard C. and May (Durkee) Thompson. He attended schools in Council Bluffs, Iowa and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1943. He entered the Marine Corp on February 24, 1943 and was discharged on October 11, 1945. While in the service he attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Tommy married Bernice Hecker on December 22, 1945 in Hiawatha, Kansas. They moved to Columbus, Nebraska in 1946. He began his career in consumer finance with United Finance Company in Columbus and retired from Barclay's American Financial in 1986. Tommy was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Lutheran Brotherhood, Past Exhalted Ruler of the Elks Club, Past Commander of the American Legion. In the past he had been active in the church, Boy Scouts and midget football. He enjoyed camping and fishing.

Edwin C. Fricke Sr.
Edwin C. Fricke Sr., 80 of Monroe, Nebraska, died Friday, November 17, 2000 at his home in Monroe.
Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church Columbus, NE on Tuesday, November 21, 2000 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. Interment will be at the New Hope Cemetery in Rural Monroe with military honors by American Legion Swanson Post 322.
Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Monday, from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at Trinity Lutheran Church on Tuesday, from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 A.M. Tuesday at the church.
Edwin C. Fricke Sr. was born
June 24, 1920 in Johnson County, Nebraska to Louis and Mary (Pieper) Fricke. He served in the Army during World War II from April 18, 1942 to July 22, 1945. During the service he was stationed in Africa, Italy and England. Edwin married Marcella Enzminger on October 16, 1946. He was a farmer, owned a propane business and worked at Middle State Manufacturing. He was a member of American Legion Swanson Post 322 where he had served as Commander and Sergeant of Arms and he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. His hobbies were woodworking and playing cards.

Arthur W. Enzminger
Arthur W. Enzminger, 106, of Wisner, Nebraska, formerly of Columbus, Nebraska, died Saturday, October 7, 2000 at the Wisner Manor in Wisner. Services are Wednesday, October 11, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus with Rev. Gary Main officiating. Interment will be at the Columbus Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post #84 Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 11, 2000 from 10:00 - 11:00 A.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home.
Arthur W. Enzminger was born
February 27, 1894 on a farm near Platte Center, NE to Lorenz and Christina (Karlin) Enzminger. He attended country school in Platte County and then worked on the farm. He was inducted into the Army on May 28, 1918 in Columbus, NE. He served overseas in France from August 19, 1918 until January 5, 1919 in the Field Artillery. He was Honorably Discharged on January 12, 1919. On June 2, 1999 he was presented the Legion of Honor medal by the French Government. This was in recognition of service and appreciation to all living veterans of World War I who served overseas.
On January 15, 1921 Arthur married Martha Schweizer. They resided in Columbus, NE where he was employed as an automobile mechanic; much of that time at the Gottberg Ford Garage. In 1942 the family moved to Council Bluffs, IA where Arthur was employed with the Government at the Quartermaster Motor Base in Ft. Crook, NE as a master mechanic. During a portion of this time he test-rode motorcycles as part of their conditioning before being shipped overseas for service in World War II. In 1952 the Government transferred Arthur to Pueblo, CO, where he retired at the age of 68. He moved back to Columbus in 1980 and in 1985 he moved to Wisner manor in Wisner, NE. He was a member of the Methodist Church, a Charter Member of the Columbus American Legion, and a member of Ovie Vernon Post #2 in Pueblo, Co. Memorials are requested to the Wisner Manor in Wisner, NE

FRANCES E. FERRIS
Frances E. Ferris, 86, formerly of Columbus, died October 30, 2000 in Berthoud, Colorado. Services will be held on Saturday November 4, 2000, at 2:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Dorsie Ivey officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Silver Creek Cemetery, Silver Creek, Nebraska.
Frances E. Ferris, 86, of Berthoud, Colorado, formerly of Columbus, was born
January 10, 1914 to James & Josephine (Anderson) Buchanan in Genoa. She graduated from Genoa High School. On October 9, 1934 she married Lester Ferris in Fullerton, Nebraska. She assisted her husband in running a gas station/cafe in Wyoming and the Columbus area. She worked for five years at B-D in Columbus. She moved to Colorado in 1999. She attended the Federated Church in Columbus, Nebraska.

LOUISA FRIESS
Louisa Friess, 98, of rural Monroe, Nebraska, died October 25, 2000 at the Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus, Nebraska. Services will be held at St. Luke's United Church of Christ Columbus, NE on Monday, October 30, 2000 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Nancy Peebles officiating. Interment will be at the Gruetli Cemetery in Monroe.
Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Sunday, from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM and at St. Luke's United Church of Christ on Monday, from 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM. A family prayer service will be held Monday at 9:45 AM at the church.
Louisa Friess, 98, was born
September 4, 1902 in Nader Gerlefingen, Switzerland to Edward and Anna (Buehler) Schneider. Her father, a tool maker, died in 1905 at the age of 36 and in 1913, she and her mother came to America and settled in the Gruetli Community, west of Columbus, Nebraska. She attended school district #17. She had dreams of going to high school and becoming a teacher, but as many young people of the times, stayed at home and worked in the fields. As a youth she enjoyed going to the Kummer's for barn dances, even though some of the barns were not strong enough for dances.
She married Albert Kummer on April 14, 1921. He died on December 23, 1928. In 1936 she married Frederick Friess. He died on May 23, 1963. Louisa spent the remainder of her years on the farm. She loved the country, music, nature, reading, knitting, crocheting, flowers, reading and writing letters. She was very active in the Gruetli community and church. Louisa was active in the church choir, was a Sunday school teacher and made sure that the church was cleaned every weekend. She was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ. She was a proud, hard workingwoman who enjoyed life and the treasures that it had to offer.

MELVIN W. GROTELUESCHEN
Melvin W. Grotelueschen, 81 of Columbus, died Tuesday, October 31, 2000 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Services are Saturday, November 4, 2000 at 10:30 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh, Nebraska, with the Rev. Terry Timm officiating. Interment will be at 1:00 PM at Columbus Cemetery, Columbus, Nebraska, with military honors by American Legion Honor Guard, Sucha Post 302. Visitation will be held on November 3, 2000 from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Saturday at 9:30 AM until service time at the church. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 AM on Saturday at the church. Memorials may be directed to family choice or donors choice.
Melvin W. Grotelueschen, 81, was born
March 29, 1919 in rural Leigh, NE to William and Frieda (Wurdeman) Groteluschen. He attended Timber Hill School in rural Leigh and Zion Lutheran School and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh. On February 11, 1942 he married Helen Kucera at Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh. He entered the Army during WW II on September 10, 1942 and was discharged for family reasons on January 12, 1943. After returning home he began farming the family farm.
Melvin had been active in the Lutheran Laymen's League at Zion Lutheran Church and was a member of the American Legion in Leigh. He enjoyed baseball, bowling, and dart ball. He and his wife were members of Jubilee Squares a square dancing group.
Melvin loved to travel and had been to Hawaii several times, had been on an Alaskan cruise and had been to Australia. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their sport activities. As a farmer he took pride in making sure his cornrows were planted straight and driving his 656 International diesel tractor. Melvin loved kids and being entertained by his grandchildren.
