married FOR 57 YEARS, PAIR DIE ON SAME DAY
An Omaha couple who were married for more than 50 years died hours apart in what relatives called a fitting end for a pair who had depended on each other.
They both were taken to a hospital last week for different health problems, said Carol Kruger, a daughter-in-law.
Anna C. Kruger, 79, died at the hospital Wednesday morning. She suffered from lupus. Leslie H. Kruger, 87, died nine hours later. His health began to fail after he broke his hip in November.
A memorial service was held Monday.
Relatives said the pair had complementary personalities. They were both hard-working, loving and understanding grandparents.
She was born
Anna Hansen in Blair, Neb., and was known for wearing pink. She made and sold decorative sugar eggs for more than 30 years.
Leslie Kruger, originally from Arlington, Neb., met Anna Hansen at the wedding of her sister to his cousin in 1945.
Leslie and Anna were married on Dec. 28, 1947, in Blair, Neb.
"It was hard to talk about one without the other," Carol Kruger said. "From the time they met at the wedding to the time they died together, they were one."
The couple are survived by their son, Jon Kruger of Omaha; daughters Lori Fryar and Melody Berger of Omaha, Marilyn Fethkenher and Kelly Kruger of Phoenix; sisters Elaine Steenblock of Ankeny, Iowa, and Eileen Hansen of Fremont, Neb.; 13 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
