Former Hastings resident, Viola ‘Vi’ Scott, 85, of Mt. Carmel Nursing Home, Kearney, Nebraska, died Tuesday, December 24, 2002 at Mt. Carmel Nursing Home.
Services will be Saturday, December 28, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. James Cooke officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, both in Hastings, Nebraska.
Viola Scott was born
June 25, 1917 in Webster County, Nebraska to August & Louise (Kimle) Vonderfecht. She graduated from Hastings High School and married Irving Scott on December 17, 1939. He preceded her in death on August 5, 1994. She worked for Debus Bakery and J.C. Penney’s. She also made wedding cakes and was a homemaker. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hastings, Nebraska. She moved to Mt. Carmel Nursing Home in 1999.
Viola Scott was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Irving and an infant son.

Hastings resident, Martin ‘Bud’ Hedlund, 74, of 411 S. Elm #107, died Monday, December 23, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services will be Friday, December 27, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Interment will be Saturday, December 28, 2002; 11:00 A.M. in Juniata Cemetery, Juniata, Nebraska.
Martin Hedlund was born
October 8, 1928 in Gregory, South Dakota to Arthur & Lucy (Smith) Hedlund. He moved from South Dakota to Hastings, Nebraska in 1952 and worked at the Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center for 19 years. He was also a carpenter and a member of Grace United Methodist Church and Chapperal Motorcycle Club. He was a past member of the Eagles Club. On April 7, 1972, he married Twila Stephenson.
Martin Hedlund was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers.

Hastings resident, Anna Swedlund, 84, of 1247 Pershing Dr. died Monday, December 23, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Anna Swedlund was born
December 24, 1917 in Webster County, Nebraska to August &
Lucy (Hensel) Hubert. She graduated from Bladen High School in 1936 and taught school. She married Milferd Swedlund on August 10, 1939 and was a homemaker. She was a charter member of the West Blue Extension Club. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she was active in the ladies group. They farmed in the Trumbull and Hansen area and retired to Hastings in 1975. She taught Sunday school at the Hansen Presbyterian Church.
Anna Swedlund was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.

Sophia M. Naggatz was born
December 7, 1918 in Clay County, near Deweese, Nebraska to William H. & Harriet (Sanders) Meester. She married Bruno V. Naggatz on January 27, 1938 in Smith Center, Kansas and he preceded her in death in 1977. She worked in the housekeeping department at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska.

LeRoy W. Samuelson, 88, of 712 Sycamore, died Monday, December 16, 2002 at his home.
Services will be Thursday, December 19, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Sacia Vik officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.
LeRoy W. Samuelson was born
May 11, 1914 in Clay County, Nebraska to Albin & Alida (Swanson) Samuelson. He attended Clay county District 10 in Lewis Township and after his eighth grade graduation, stayed at home to help with the family farm. On November 12, 1938, he married June R. Knowles in Hastings, Nebraska. He farmed in Clay County until his retirement in 1980 when they moved into Hastings, Nebraska. They celebrated their 64th anniversary in November. He was a member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He was a life long area resident.

Marvin E.H. Miller was born
June 4, 1922 in Crawford County, Hanover Township, near Denison, Iowa to Harry & Flora (Reuwsaat) Miller. He grew up in Iowa and lived there for many years. On December 24, 1944, he married Betty Ann Moore. He farmed near Denison, Iowa then moved to Guide Rock, Nebraska where he worked for the Village of Guide Rock. He later moved to Superior, Nebraska and was employed with the Public School. They eventually moved to Hastings, Nebraska where he worked for Hueske Harvestor and Lawless Distributing.
Marvin E.H. Miller was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Allen Miller.

Helen J. Hoggatt, 79, of 623 S. Colorado Ave., died Thursday, December 12, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Helen J. Hoggatt was born
January 10, 1923 in Adams County, six miles south of Hastings, Nebraska to Walter Ernest & Bertha Ethel (Laux) George. She was the youngest of five children. Her siblings were LaVerne Everett, born 1908, Delbert Richard, born 1909, Nellie Laurine, born 1913, and Virgil, born 1915. She attended school at District #78, six miles south of Hastings and attended Hastings High School to the 10th grade. She married John LeRoy Hoggatt on September 19, 1937 in Mankato, Kansas. Her sister, ‘Rene’ and brother-in-law Mark Sherman were Helen’ s and Johns’ wedding attendants. They lived in several home in Hastings, Juniata, Pauline and a short time in Sunland, California, but home was 623 S. Colorado Ave., Hastings, Nebraska. They had four children, Garry Lee, Larry Gene, Beverly Ann and Shirley Rae. She helped her husband with their business, Johnny’s Plumbing shop for many years. She loved plants, especially purple lilacs as that was her favorite color. She enjoyed country songs. She loved to go to garage sales. She and John spent many fun evenings playing cards with their friends. She was especially a devoted mother to her family. Her daughter, Shirley, was very special to her and they spent many hours playing ‘Watch you Temper’ game. She and John were in the group that organized ‘Hope Training School’ which Shirley attended. Helen was ill for a long time. She had diabetes and also went thru many surgeries in her life. Her daughter, Beverly, gave her love and devoted care for many years. Her father died in 1938 and her mother in 1939. Her husband, John, died in 1985 and her daughter, Shirley in 1992, Great granddaughter DeAnna Bieck, three brothers and one sister.

May 4, 1933 in Adams County, Nebraska to Herman & Olive (Stroops) Batterman. She graduated from Fairfield High School and attended nurses training. On December 18, 1954, she married Gerald L. ‘Jerry’ Adams and he preceded her in death on June 4, 1980. She was a nurse’s aide for Adams County Social Services.
Alice May Adams was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jerry, brother, Charles Batterman and a sister, Susie Frazier.
