Long time Hastings jeweler, Richard John Hiber, 89, of 1524 Highland Dr., Hastings, Nebraska, died Saturday, November 9, 2002 at home.
Rosary service will be Monday, November 11, 2002; 7:30 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, November 12, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church with Father Larry Gyhra officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, all in Hastings, Nebraska.
Richard Hiber was born
January 26, 1913 in O’Neill, Nebraska to John & Cora (Hutchinson) Hiber. His parents moved to Hastings when he was 10 years old and opened Hiber’s Jewelry Store. He attended Hastings High School, Notre Dame University and graduated Hastings College in 1935. He worked for J.M. McDonald Company before servicing in the United States Army during WWII from January 28, 1942 to November 14, 1945. During the war, he served 3 ½ years with the 6th Infantry Division in the South Pacific, earning the Bronze Star. When he returned from the service, he joined his father in the jewelry store. He married Rita McGovern of Omaha on August 3, 1946. He was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, an honorary member of the Crosier Apostolate, a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, the American Legion, VFW Post 1346, and Lochland Country Club. He was a former president of Meadowbrook Country Club.
Richard Hiber was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marguerite Corrigan.

Waynard E. Colburn, 89, of Blue Hill Care Center, died Thursday, November 7, 2002 at Blue Hill Care Center, Blue Hill, Nebraska.
Services will be Monday, November 11, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at Zion Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska with Rev. Dan Heuer officiating. Burial will be in Blue Valley Cemetery, Ayr, Nebraska.
Waynard E. Colburn was born
November 30, 1912 in Adams County, Nebraska to Ray R. & Elizabeth (Hansen) Colburn. He married Ernestina Kuehn on June 5, 1938 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Blue Hill, Nebraska. She preceded him in death in 1982. He farmed in the Glenvil, Nebraska area and moved to Hastings, Nebraska in1998. In May, he moved to Blue Hill Care Center, Blue Hill, Nebraska. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Waynard E. Colburn was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ernestina, sons, Wayne & Deryl and 2 granddaughters, 3 sisters and 3 brothers.

Dora V. Gundlach, 80, of 309 Oswego, died Thursday, November 7, 2002, at her home.
Services will be Tuesday, November 12, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Hastings, Nebraska.
Dora V. Gundlach was born
February 14, 1922, in Lamar, Nebraska to Willard & Maude (Cunningham) Nicholson. She graduated from Palisade High School, Palisade, Nebraska. On October 6, 1944, she married Walter J. Gundlach. She worked for the Palisade Times as a linotypist. During WWII, she worked on the ships in Tacoma, Washington. In 1952, she moved from Chicago, Illinois to Hastings, Nebraska. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church and Acacia Chapter 39 of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a loving wife and mother and a giving friend to many.
Dora V. Gundlach was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters, Vera Zielke & Buryle Phares and 1 brother, Timothy Nicholson.

Mary M. Uden, 100, of Perkins Pavilion, died Sunday, November 3, 2002 at Perkins Pavilion.
Services will be Thursday, November 7, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at Christ Lutheran Church, rural Juniata, Nebraska with Pastor Greg Volzke officiating. Burial will be in Concordia Cemetery, Christ Lutheran Churchyard.
Mary M. Uden was born
February 20, 1902 in Oxville, Illinois to William & Elizabeth (Nagel) Finnigsmier. She was baptized on April 6, 1902. She moved to this area with her family in 1907. She was confirmed on March 28, 1915. On December 28, 1922, she married William J. Uden, both at Christ Lutheran Church, rural Juniata, Nebraska, and he preceded her in death in 1958. She worked in alterations for Schweser’s Store for 5 years. She was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church, Ladies Guild, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and Ladies Extension Club, all in Juniata, Nebraska.
Mary M. Uden was preceded in death by her parents, husband and 4 brothers, 1 sister and a grandchild.

Former Hastings resident, Opal F. Cleveland, 89, of Good Samaritan Center, Superior, Nebraska, died Sunday, December 29, 2002 at Good Samaritan Center.
Services will be Thursday, January 2, 2003; 10:00 A.M at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Dorthea Fairbanks officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery both in Hastings, Nebraska.
Opal F. Cleveland was born
January 22, 1913 in Jewell, Kansas to Rolly H. & Elsie E. (Payne) Stone. She graduated from Jewell High School, Jewell, Kansas. She married Marion C. ‘Pete’ Cleveland on February 27, 1931 and he preceded her in death on August 25, 1958. She moved to Hastings, Nebraska from Republic, Kansas in 1951. She was a homemaker and retired from the Hastings Regional Center. She moved to Good Samaritan Center, Superior, Nebraska in 2001.

Sam L. North was born
August 11, 1907 in Adams County, Nebraska to Samuel & Lottie (Shay) North. He attended rural school and began working with his parents on the family farm north of Hastings, Nebraska. After his marriage to Florence Dykeman on July 16, 1930, he went to work for Swift’s cold Storage Company in Hastings, Nebraska. She preceded him in death in 2002. In the late 1930's , he worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot until it closed. From 1955 until 1972, he worked in the maintenance department at the Hastings Regional Center. He returned to farming in 1972, retiring in 1996. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and N.A.R.F.E. He was a life long area resident.
Sam L. North was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Florence, daughter, Virginia Hupf, 2 brothers and 1 sister.

Glen L. Uden was born
November 25, 1923, in Adams County, Nebraska to William J. & Mary M. (Finnigsmier) Uden. He graduated from Juniata High School. He was a corporal in the United States Marine Corp during WWII from August 24, 1944 to August 24, 1946, serving in the Pacific Theater. On July 30, 1950, he married Mary Vee Bayles at Christ Lutheran Church, rural Juniata, Nebraska. She preceded him in death on October 7, 1999 He was a farmer and owned and operated a welding shop. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Juniata Township Board, Corn Growers Association and the American Legion Club. He was a past member of Concordia Cemetery Association. He was a life long area resident.

Luther Goding was born
July 5, 1921 in Omaha, Nebraska to Luther L. & Effie (Peabody) Goding. He graduated from Omaha South High School in 1939. He served in the United States Army Air Corp from April 1942 until January 1946. On November 24, 1948 he married Louise Teaford in Hastings, Nebraska. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 1953. He worked at the Production Credit Association in Hastings and branch offices in Fairfield and Minden, Nebraska from 1959 to 1981. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge #317 A.M. & A.F., Scottish Rite, all in Hastings and the American Legion Post in Blue Hill, Nebraska.
Luther Goding was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters.

Julia E. Diehm
Former Hastings resident, Julia E. Diehm, 100, of Blue Hill Care Center, Blue Hill, Nebraska, died Wednesday, December 25, 2002 at Blue Hill Care Center.
Memorial service will be Friday, January 3, 2003; 10:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Private family Interment will be in Sterling Cemetery, Sterling, Nebraska.
Julia E. Diehm, daughter of Ferdinand and Anna (Flegler) Diehm, was born
July 20, 1902 on her parents’ farm south of Adams, Gage County, Nebraska. Her parents emigrated from Germany in the early 1880's. For several years, they lived with friends in the Hopewell Community, Johnson County, Nebraska. In 1891, they bought a farm in nearby Gage county. Julia and her siblings were all born
on this farm. In 1905, the family moved to a farm in Johnson County near the town of Crab Orchard. In 1918, her father gave up farming and the family moved to a house in Sterling, Nebraska. Julia graduated from Sterling High School, Sterling, Nebraska and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Peru State College, Peru, Nebraska. She continued her education at the College of Education in Evanston, Illinois, University of Colorado at Boulder and Colorado State College in Greeley, Colorado. Julia’s teaching career began in her hometown of Sterling, Nebraska and she was with the Columbus schools for a number of years. She moved from Columbus, Nebraska to Hastings, Nebraska in 1945 and lived with her sister, Selma until Selma’s death on July, 14, 2001. She was a third grade teacher at Longfellow Elementary School for 24 years. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, the Department of Classroom Teachers, held a life membership in the PTA, the Hastings Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association and a life member of the Nebraska Educational Association. Julia united with the Methodist Church, of which she remained a loyal and devout member. Since moving to Hastings, she has been a member of the First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. Julia was also a member of the YWCA in Hastings.
Julia E. Diehm was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters, Selma J. Diehm and Mrs. Robert Hillman, 2 brothers, Gus & Paul.
