Mary Ellen Willey, 80, of 1133 Brentwood Drive, died Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at NHS Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska.

Services will be Monday, December 2, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Pastor Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Mary Ellen Willey was born icon September 18, 1922 in Manhattan, Kansas to Fred & Elizabeth (Kahler) Menard. She moved from Kansas to Hastings, Nebraska with her family in 1932. She graduated from Hastings High School and married George Willey in Mankato, Kansas on August 17, 1946. She was a saleperson at Woolworth, the assistant manager of the S & H Green Stamp Center for 8 years and a cashier/clerk at Big G Hardware Store for 15 years. She volunteered as a Pink Lady at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital and at the Red Cross. She was a member of Grace Methodist Church, Church Circle 2 , Christian Builders Sunday School, Phi Sigma Alpha, several bridge clubs, Hastings Museum and a former board member of the Hastings Community Concert Association.

Mary Ellen Willey was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include,
Husband: George Willey - Hastings, NE
Nieces, Nephews and a host of friends.

Memorial may be given to Grace United Methodist Church or To The Family

August Lutkemeier

Hastings resident, August Lutkemeier, 96, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002 at Fairview Manor, Fairmont, Nebraska.

Services will be Saturday, November 30, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Carl W. Utley officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

August Lutkemeier was born icon February 28, 1906 on the family farm near Campbell, Nebraska to August Sr. & Sophia (Buerger) Lutkemeier. On February 28, 1930, he married Lucille Adler at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Campbell, Nebraska. He was a retired farmer and in the 1950's worked for the USDA in Adams County as a field reporter. He moved from the Campbell area to Hastings, Nebraska in 1947. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hastings, Nebraska, where he was a Deacon and an Elder. He was active with the Fellowship of St. Andrew and Skipper of the Presbyterian Mariners Group.

August Lutkemeier was preceded in death by his parents, 5 sisters and 5 brothers.

Verna L. Heltenberg

Verna L. Heltenberg, 80, of 8530 S. Elkhorn Ave., Roseland, Nebraska, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002 at Methodist Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska.

Services will be Friday, November 29, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at Redeemer Lutheran Church with Rev. Paul Hirsch officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, both in Hastings, Nebraska.

Verna L. Heltenberg was born icon December 11, 1921 in Blue Hill, Nebraska to Louie & Anna (Mulheisen) Krueger. She graduated from Blue Hill High School and attended the Normal Training Program for teachers. She taught school for a few years. She married Marvin Heltenberg in 1944 and he preceded her in death in 1986. She worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot during WWII and then as a Psych tech at the Hastings Regional Center for 31 years. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska.

Verna L. Heltenberg was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Marvin, sister, Pauline, an infant brother and a great grandson.

Survivors include,

Arlo Silas Woodward

Former Hastings resident, Arlo Silas Woodward, 90, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002 at Tiffany Square, Grand Island, Nebraska.

Services will be Saturday, November 30, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Pastor Sacia Vik & Rev. Harold D. Stromer officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Hastings, Nebraska.

Arlo Silas Woodward was born icon February 5, 1912 in Bladen, Nebraska to Jonathan E. & Elizabeth (Stark) Woodward. He graduated from Hastings High School and on October 5, 1935, married Alma Gartner. He farmed with his father for several years before founding Woodwards Disposal Company in 1933, retiring in 1984. He was a member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for over 50 years and a past member of the Eagle’s and Knights of Pythias. He was a life long area resident.

Arlo Silas Woodward was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Ora Walker and Geneva Frey.

Inez L. Amos, 89, of The Kensington, died Thursday, November 21, 2002 at Perkins Pavilion.

Services will be Monday, November 25, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Neil Vik officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Inez L. Amos was born icon November 2, 1913 in Gates, Nebraska to Silas & Charlotte (Duff) Ash. She attended High School at Sargent, Nebraska. She was a sales person and bookkeeper for J.C. Penney’s and also for Budweiser Company. On August 26, 1931, she married Kirk L. Amos in Grand Island, Nebraska and he preceded her in death on September 25, 1999. She moved from Sargent, Nebraska to Hastings, Nebraska in 1941.
She was owner/operator of The Ritz tavern from 1945 to 1947. From 1947 to retirement in 1972, she owned Kirk’s Liquor and Sports Center.

Inez L. Amos was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Kirk and 1 brother.

Hastings resident, Lorraine E. Pawloski, 89, died Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at Perkins Pavilion.

Rosary will be Sunday, November 24, 2002; 8:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, November 25, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Father Michael Houlihan & Father Greg Pawloski officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Lorraine E. Pawloski was born icon March 12, 1913 in Ericson, Nebraska to Holt D. & Pearl (Gibbs) Pierce. She graduated from Ericson High School and on December 1, 1930, married Donald Michael Pawloski. He preceded her in death on April 15, 1962. She moved from Norfolk, Nebraska to Hastings in 1942. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Altar Society, Legion of Mary and volunteered for R.S.V.P.

Lorraine E. Pawloski was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Holt, a son, Patrick, 4 granddaughters, a grandson, 2 brothers and 3 sisters.

An Adams County resident for more than a century, Sara Connely, 101, died Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at Perkins Pavilion.

Services will be Monday, December 2, 2002; 11:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Neil Vik officiating. Burial will be in Blue Valley Cemetery, Ayr, Nebraska.

Sara Connely was born icon April 23, 1901 in Adams County, Nebraska to William & Ella Gay (Versaw) Gilmore. She attended school in Blue Hill, Nebraska, graduating in 1919. On June 21, 1924, she married Vance Connely in Kansas and he preceded her in death on June 1, 1972. She lived in Ayr, Nebraska for 47 years, where she attended the Methodist Church and was a member of the Ladies Circle. After Vance Connely’s death, she became one of the first residents of Goldbeck Towers, where she lived until 2000. She celebrated her 100th birthday at The Homestead and was saluted by NBC weatherman, Willard Scott, on The Today Show.

Sara Connely was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Vance.

Rosary will be Thursday, November 21, 2002; 7:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, November 22, 2002, 10:30 A.M. at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church with Father Larry Gyhra officiating. Private family interment will be in Parkview Cemetery.

Lenore I. Schropp was August 5, 1919 in Hanover, Kansas to George L. & Hester B. (Fusseneggar) Schropp. She graduated from St. Cecilia’s High School and received her degree from Hastings College. She attended St. Francis School of Nursing in Grand Island, Nebraska. She was a registered nurse and worked at the Hastings Regional Center for many years. She was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church and Altar Society.

She was a cook for Giltner Public Schools. She was a homemaker and a member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska and Greenwood Club at Giltner, Nebraska.
