Paul E. Maddox

Age 76 of Nebraska City passed away on Friday; November 20, 2009 at BryanLGH East Medical Center in Lincoln, NE.

He was born icon on February 28, 1933 at Nemaha, NE; the son of Floyd Raymond and Georgia Elizabeth (Smith) Maddox. He attended school and graduated from the Nemaha High School with the class of 1951. Paul was united in marriage to Diane Holland on December 17, 1961 at Brownville, NE and to this union two children were born: Rhonda and Dan.

Paul worked and retired from the Army Corps of Engineers and during his employment he received numerous awards and commendations for his faithful service. In total, he worked for over 34 years for the Corps of Engineers. He enjoyed fishing, camping, mushroom hunting and various other outdoor activities. He was one that always noticed the beauty of nature that other's often overlooked. His family - especially his children and grandchildren - were his greatest love. He was always there for them and regularly attended their programs and activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Georgia Maddox, his step-mother Mildred Maddox, an aunt Irene Maddox, his brother and sister-in-law Darrell and Hazel Holland and his father and mother-in-law Raymond and Marjorie Holland.

He is survived by his beloved wife Diane Maddox of Nebraska City; daughter Rhonda Shirley and husband Mark of Percival, IA; one son Dan Maddox of Nebraska City; four grandchildren: Justin Shirley and fiancé Randi Gregory of West Des Moines, IA; Raven Shirley of Lincoln, NE; Brendan Maddox and Bryce Maddox both of Nebr. City; brothers and sisters: Floyd Junior Maddox and wife Genevieve of Las Vegas, NV; Carol Simmons and husband Ronald of Nemaha, NE; Doris Barnard and husband Jerry of Lincoln, NE; Gary Maddox and wife Pat of Auburn, NE; Jean Reeves and husband Terry of Peru, NE; Larry Maddox and wife Geri of Shubert, NE; Mary Davis and husband Craig of Shubert, NE; Alice Alexander and husband Gary of Auburn, NE; Patti Wamsley and husband Don of Nemaha, NE and Kenny Maddox and wife Tammy of Madrid, NE; numerous nieces and nephews; other family and many friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday morning; Nov. 23 at the Calvary Community Church in Nebraska City with Rev. Norman Anderson officating; burial will be in the Wyuka Cemetery at Nebraska City. The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City.

Memorials may be given to the National Alliance for Autism Research in honor of Paul's grandson Bryce or the Calvary Community Church in Nebr. City.

Dr. John H. "Jack" Wilmes

Age 84 of Lincoln, NE; formerly of Nebraska City passed away at his home on Wednesday; Nov. 11, 2009 surrounded by his loving family after a long struggle with Parkinson's and Pancreatic Cancer.

He was born icon on February 12, 1925 to John Herman and Kathryn Josephine (Zech) Wilmes in Creston, IA. He graduated from the Creston High School with the class of 1943. Jack served in the 15th Army Air Corps Division during World War II. His plane was heavily damaged during combat over Austria and he was classified as missing in action until recovered by US Forces behind Russian lines.

He graduated from Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL and began his practice in Bedford, IA. He was united in marriage to Betty Noblet in June of 1953 in Maryville, MO and the couple moved to Nebraska City in October of 1953 where he practiced optometry for the next 30 years. Dr. Wilmes was active in the community where he served as Commander of the American Legion Post #8 and the VFW. He was active in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Scouting, coaching baseball and driving the Lourdes School Bus. He served on the Lourdes School Board and St. Mary's Hospital Board and was a member of both the Nebraska and National Optometric Associations.

The couple retired to Lincoln, NE in 1982 to be near family.

Dr. Wilmes was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and a brother Jim.

He is survived by his wife Betty of Lincoln, NE; three sons: Mark Wilmes of Fort Worth, TX; Mike Wilmes and wife Trish of Lincoln, NE and Jay Wilmes and wife Ann of Lincoln, NE; three grandchildren: Jordan Wilmes, Jacob Wilmes and Abigail Wilmes all of Lincoln, NE; a sister Mary Thompson of Westminster, CO; several nieces and nephews; other family and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November, 14, 2009 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. Lyle Johnson celebrating the Mass. Interment services will be held at the Prairie Home Cemetery at Graham, MO at 3:00 p.m. with complete military services conducted by the Missouri Funeral Honors Detail.

A rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Friday (11/13) evening at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City followed by the family receiving friends.

Memorials may be given to the Nebr. City Lourdes Endowment.

Olin J. "Snuffy" Taylor

Olin J. "Snuffy" Taylor, age 79 of Hamburg, IA, passed away on Friday, October 30, 2009 at his home in Hamburg.

Olin was born icon on November 2, 1929 at Rock Port, MO; the son of Faye Dean and Phyllis (Whitehead) Smith, Sr. He attended school in Hamburg and then served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He married Ruth Ann Maupin on August 22, 1952. She preceded him in death in 1987.

Olin worked in the construction industry for many years. He served as foreman on the construction of many highways and worked for Construction Industry Laborers.

Olin is survived by his children: Susan Combs and husband Charles of Lincoln, NE; Terry Taylor of Nebraska City, NE and Chani (Taylor) Blakeman and husband Paul serving in the United States Air Force in Portugal; 4 grandchildren: Jessica, Jacob, Joshua and Kiara and 2 great-grandchildren: Connor and Anthony; half brother Faye "Punky" Smith of Hamburg, IA and half sister Diane Randel of Indianola, NE and other family and friends.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at the Hamburg Cemetery in Hamburg, IA; inurnment to follow the services.

David J. Lentz

David J. Lentz, age 56 of Nebraska City, passed away on November 3, 2009 at his home.

David was born icon on November 9, 1952 in Des Moines, IA; the son of John E. and Dorothy F. (Hinze) Lentz. He attended school and graduated from the Hamburg High School in 1970.

He worked as a mechanic for Larson Motors and then owned and operated Dave's Garage in Nebr. City. He was a member of the Nebraska City Eagles and formerly served as a trustee.

David is survived by his sister Teresa Schmitz and her husband Tim of Nebr. City, NE and other family and friends.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 9, 2009 at the Hamburg Cemetery in Hamburg, IA; inurnment will follow the services. Fr. Mark Cyza will officiate at the services.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Ambolene Verda Casey Shelton

Ambolene Verda Casey Shelton was born icon on November 6, 1911 in Parthenon - Newton County Arkansas. Her parents were John and Esther (Reynolds) Casey. She married Ellis Shelton on December 25, 1935 and they had four children: Mac, Eugene, Verda and Wanda.

Ambolene graduated from the Newton County Baptist Academy in 1930. She also attended Harrison Teaching College, Arkansas where she earned a teaching certificate. She taught in several country schools in Arkansas.

Ellis, Ambolene and their son Mac moved to Oregon where Ellis worked as a lumber-jack for three years. They returned to Arkansas, then moved to Iowa in 1942. They farmed for the Kleckner and Nixson families east of Farragut. Ambolene was an active member of the Farragut Congregational United Church of Christ. She had a strong faith and read her Bible through several times. She liked to listen to the Gaithers.

She enjoyed being outdoors and worked alongside Ellis farming. She loved to garden and especially loved to grow a wide variety of flowers. They enjoyed traveling and took several trips. Ellis and Ambolene loved to camp with family and friends. One trip they always remembered was their mission trip to Galeana, Mexico. She enjoyed making new friends at Garden View Care Center and participating in many of their activies.

Ambolene is survived by her son Eugene Shelton and wife Cindy of Farragut, IA and their children; her daughter Verda Bennett of Farragut, IA; a brother Devoe Casey and his wife of Farragut, IA; grandchildren: Chris Slauter, Josh Munns, Emily Shelton Al Doush, Rebekah Elder and Carla Shelton. Four great-grandchildren: Rachel Morton, Michael and Christopher Munns and Noah Elder; one great-great grandson Aidan Morton and many other relatives and friends

She was preceded in death by her father and mother; John and Esther Casey; brother Bill; sisters: Modena, Marietta, Minnie and Earlene; son Mac; daughter Wanda and her grandson Bobby Jean Bennett.

Ambolene entered into the presence of the Lord of Friday evening; October 30, 2009 at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday morning (Nov. 3) at 10:30 a.m. at the Farragut Congregational U.C.C. with Pastor Claude Westerfield officiating. Burial will be in the Grange Hall Cemetery at rural Rock Port, MO.

Visitation is open at the Shull-Gude Funeral Home in Riverton, IA on Monday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The casket will remain closed at the church on Tuesday.

Memorials may be given to the Farragut Congregational U.C.C. in lieu of flowers.

Lois Jean McMullen

Lois Jean McMullen was born icon in Hamburg, IA, Fremont County, Sept. 12, 1924 to Clarence A. and Essie M. (Bennett) Reed. Her paternal grandparents were Knoble K. and Mae (Penny) Reed of Sidney and maternal grandparents were Charles and Cora (Spittler) Bennett of Sidney, IA.

Jean grew up in Hamburg, IA. She attended school there and graduated from Hamburg, IA High School in 1942. Her brothers were Leighton B. Reed (Deceased) of Hamburg, C. Max Reed (Deceased) of Hamburg, Lyall (Shorty) Reed (Deceased) of Hamburg, Keith Reed (Deceased) of Springfield, OR. Her sisters are Marjorie (Mrs. Stanley) Aistrope of Hamburg, IA and Ruth (Mrs. Bob Harrell) of Creston, IA.

Upon graduation, Lois Jean, was employed as an operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. After her marriage on September 17, 1944 to Paul McMullen of Riverton, IA Lois Jean baked wedding cakes. She worked part time for four years at American Meter Gas Co. in Nebr. City, NE. She worked part time at the Ludington Grocery Store. She worked in the office of Henry Field Seed Nursery in Shenandoah, IA for 12 spring seasons. In 1973, Lois Jean started working for the Riverton Post Office as a clerk for three years. She was appointed Post Master of the Riverton Post Office in 1976. She retired in 1987 after 14 years of service.

Jean was a board member and council treasurer of the Methodist Church. She was a 50 year member of Rebekah Lodge and a 50 year member of the Eastern Star.

Lois Jean (every one who knew her called her Jean) truly loved her church. She held nearly all the offices in the U.M.W. She was president twice. She loved singing in the choir at church during the time the church had a choir. She taught Sunday School and also helped with U.M.Y.F.

Jean and Paul celebrated an anniversary in Niagara Falls on their way to Maine. While in Maine, she visited on of the Eastern Star National officers. During her time as Post Master, she was able to attend a U.S. Post Office convention in Puerto Rico, also visiting St. John's Island. She attended many other conventions of the U.S. Post Office. Jean was also proud to be able to say that she had visited 21 states plus Canada during her travels.

She took her mother into her care until her mother was taken to a care center, where she died. She helped take care of her mother-in-law and father-in-law until their deaths.

Jean and Paul had a 50th year anniversary celebration at the church in Riverton. Many relatives and friends attended in their honor. Jean entered the Ambassador Health Care Center in Sidney on June 12, 2007. She always had a smile for those taking care of her.

Funeral Services will be held Monday morning (Nov. 2) at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Riverton, IA with Rev. Jaye Johnson officiating; burial will follow in the Riverton Cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 1) at the Shull-Gude Funeral Home in Riverton.

Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church in Riverton, IA.

Alma Louise (James) Greenamyer

Alma Louise (James) Greenamyer, age 77 of Nebraska City, NE; formerly of Hamburg, IA passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at Duff's Friendship Villa in Nebr. City, NE.

Louise was born icon on February 15, 1932 in Hamburg, IA; the daughter of Gene and Nellie E. (Cockerham) Walker. She graduated from Sidney High School in Sidney, IA with the Class of 1947. She then attended Missouri Methodist School of Nursing and graduated in 1952.

She worked as a Registered Nurse in Hamburg, IA; Nebraska City, NE and the Kansas City area over the years. She was a former member of the Elks and the Eagles Auxiliary.

Louise is survived by her children Gene James of San Diego, CA; Steven James of Sacramento, CA and Vince James and wife Rhonda of Plattsmouth, NE; 5 grandchildren; sister Marlene Ramold and husband Kenny of Nebr. City, NE; brother-in-law Gene Sonego of San Antonio, TX; one niece, several nephews and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Phyllis Sonego and her husbands.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday (10/17) at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA with Rev. Norman Walter officiating; burial will follow at the Hamburg Cemetery in Hamburg, IA.

The family will greet friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday (10/16) evening at the funeral home in Hamburg.

Memorials may be given to the American Heart Assn.

Eva L. Irwin

Eva L. Irwin, lovingly known as Evie Ann, age 80 of Nebr. City, NE passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at Duff's Friendship Villa in Nebr. City, NE.

Eva was born icon on March 7, 1929 in Bristol, TN; the daughter of Dewey and Phoebe (Joyner) Hall.

Eva raised three of her own children: Connie, Ginger and Wayne and also raised her nephew James Cross for her sister Eula Mae who died very young of Tuberculosis.

She worked at Pendleton's Woolen Mills and at Norman's IGA for many, many years. She was a favorite cashier of many and brightened the day for people who shopped at Norman‘s. She was very proud when she received her GED from Nebr. City High School in 1977. Evie enjoyed bowling, gardening, music and swimming, but mainly loved spending time with her family.

Those left to cherish Eva's memory include her children Connie Click and husband Joe; Ginger Meek and husband Denny and Wayne Irwin all of Nebr. City, NE; four grandchildren Tony Click and wife Lisa of Papillion, NE, Dannielle Click of Lincoln, NE, Carmen Meek-Hoferer and husband Christopher of Lincoln, NE and Heath Meek of Nebr. City, NE; two great grandchildren Chloe Click and Evan Click; nephew James Cross and wife Lucille of Bluff City, TN; sister Mary Ann Graham of Nebr. City, NE; brother Dan Hall and Beulah of Knoxville, TN; three half-sisters Emmaline Amadon of South Glen Falls, NY; Evelyn Helton of Knoxville, TN and Brenda Monaghan of Greenback, TN; sister-in-law Arlene Mounce of Nebr. City, NE; brother-in-law Glen Irwin and wife Judy of Millard, NE; and other family and friends.

Eva was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Walter on March 7, 1988; three sisters Eula Mae, Willie and Margaret and one brother Dewey "Bud".

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Gude Mortuary Chapel in Nebr. City with Terry Weible officiating; burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.

The family will greet friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday evening at the mortuary.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Hildred Maxine Sloan Field

Hildred Maxine Sloan Field was born icon on May 18, 1924; the daughter of Dodds and Velma (Irvin) Sloan in Blanchard, MO.

Maxine attended school in Blanchard and Coin before moving with her parents to Clarinda, IA. She was Iowa state shorthand champion her senior year at Clarinda High School, graduating with the class of 1942.

After graduation, she was for a period of time a telephone operator, where she underwent one of the most saddening events of her life. She was operating the switchboard the night the news came in about the terrible loss of life the Clarinda and Red Oak National Guard suffered in WWII at the Kaserine Pass battle in North Africa. There were 34 deaths, and notification of kin came through her switchboard.

She later became a receptionist and secretary at the Lisle Corp. in Clarinda.

Maxine married John D. Field at the home of her parents in Clarinda on Feb. 2, 1947. They lived in Tarkio where she became secretary to the Tarkio College Housing Authority, moving on to Columbia, MO while John completed his degree in Journalism. At Columbia, Maxine became personal secretary to the university treasurer.

In 1951, they moved to Hamburg after purchasing The Hamburg Reporter newspaper. They sold the weekly newspaper and retired in 2004.

Maxine and John became parents of a son Dan in 1950, and a daughter Polly in 1953.

Maxine worked part time at the Reporter office. In 1968 she was named executive director of Park Washington Plaza, the government housing project in Hamburg, and served in that position until 1990. After retirement she was named a member of the Plaza Board.

She was a member of the Hamburg American Legion Auxiliary, and became president of that group. She was also a member of the Grape Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband John of Hamburg, IA; son Dan Field of Osage Beach, MO; daughter Polly Bromert and husband Dave of Liberty, MO; three grandchildren: Nick Bromert of Liberty, MO; Chris Field of Des Moines, IA and Kelly Field of Des Moines, IA; one great-grandson Cohen of Des Moines; and many friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, a sister Essie Lovitt and a grandson Andy Bromert.

Maxine died at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg on Thursday morning, Oct. 8, 2009 after a long, adventurous, useful, and fulfilling life. She had traveled to each of Iowa's 99 counties, all 50 states and 28 countries.

Memorial Services will be held Monday, October 12, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hamburg Cemetery in Hamburg, IA with Rev. Jan Phillips officiating. Inurnment will follow the services.
