Donald H. Larson
Donald H. Larson, 89 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lincoln, NE.
He was born
at home in Hamburg, Iowa on October 1, 1919, the second child of six to Richard A. and Meta C. (Hofsaess) Larson. He grew up in Hamburg, was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church and was graduated valedictorian of the Hamburg High School class of 1937.
Following high school he was employed by IMP Implement Co. of Randolph, Iowa, the Interstate Nurseries of Hamburg, Iowa and the Iowa State Highway Commission. On February 25, 1941 he enlisted in the 124th Observation Squadron of the Iowa National Guard. Immediately following his enlistment the 124th was activated into the US Army Air Corps and was assigned to Sherman Field, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Following the start of World War II he served in Texas at Ellington Field and the Galveston Air Base.On December 20, 1941 at Tarkio, Missouri he married Ilo Jeanne Carter. Early in 1943 she joined him in New Orleans, Louisiana while he served with the anti-submarine patrol in the Gulf of Mexico. Don and Ilo first lived together at 3343 Esplanade Avenue in New Orleans.
Prior to being commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on April 17, 1943 he served as Tech Sergeant and Sergeant Major. Following his commission he was sent to Salt Lake City, Utah for duty assignment and was posted to the about-to-be opened Air Base at Grand Island, Nebraska where he served as military personnel officer.
In October of 1943 he was promoted to 1st Lietenant and personnel officer at the now in full operation Grand Island Air Base which was the final training and assembly stage for B-17 Air Groups bound for the 8th Air Force in Europe. His son Eric was born
in Grand Island May 24, 1944.
On June 6, 1944 he was promoted to Captain and Base Personnel Officer at Grand Island which now had expanded to include an annex-base at Beringuen Field, Puerto Rico. This annex was utilized in navigational training for crews operating the new B-29 aircraft to be used in the Pacific. Victory came in Europe and with that came a shift in Don’s assignment to the “Silver Plate Project” of atomic bomb fame. His participation in that operation involved the selection of the all-volunteer B-29 flight crews for assignment to Wendover, Utah. This unit would become the 509th Composite group and would eventually be based in Roswell, New Mexico. His son Alan Bruce was born
in Hamburg, Iowa on June 16, 1945.
The BOMB ended the war and Don was faced with a choice of terminating or continuing his career as an Air Force officer which would have included several years in occupied Germany and separation from his family who would remain in Iowa. Given this choice he left the Air Force on a Stand-By Reserve Basis where he remained for nearly thirty years and was officially retired in 1973.
Following active duty Don with his wife and sons came to Nebraska City in the winter of 1945. They started a small farm products business (cream, eggs, poultry, livestock feed) and went to work. They first installed a tiny grocery department and purchased the store building. It all expanded into a Supermarket, Farm Center and a real estate holding company. The enterprises grew for many years and life was good.
During these years he also became a public servant as a director of the Chamber of Commerce, Finance Commissioner of Nebraska City and First District Otoe County Commissioner and board chairman.
Following the death of his wife, Ilo Jeanne, in 1973 Don retired from active business. During his retirement years he pursued his passionate interest in the conservation of natural resources and wildlife. To this end he served for twenty years as a Director of the Nemaha Natural Resources District to include two consecutive terms as Chairman. Also during this time he served fifteen years as a member and Chairman of the Nebraska Natural Resources Commission.
In his later years he traveled a good portion of the world in wonderful company.
Don was a lifelong member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eagles, Elks, Masonic Lodge and many other organizations.
Don is survived by his many friends and family to include his brother Richard Larson who lives on the family homestead in Hamburg, Iowa, brother-in-law Charles Martin also of Hamburg, Iowa, son Eric, son and daughter-in-law A Bruce and Dr. Susan Larson all of Nebraska City. Also surviving are his many grandchildren, great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and others he regarded as children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, twin brothers Keith (Tub) and Kenneth, and sisters Norma Lee and Gloria Jeannette.
Throughout Don’s life he always found time to nurture, encourage and inspire everyone close to him. During the final years of his life he kept a sign on his door that read: “Let me live in a house beside the road and be a friend to all.” That little sign said it all.
