Bill Coon, Sr., 71

(Aug. 14) GORDON - Bill Coon, Sr., 71, of Rapid City, S.D., formerly of Gordon, died Aug. 12, 2001, at The Touch of Home at Gordon. He was born Aug. 30, 1929, at Gordon. His parents were W.L. and Nellie R. (Morris) Coon.

He married Carole Burleigh Dishong Jan. 9, 1982, at Gordon. He was an independent trucker and operated Coon Cattle Liner for many years. He also had been a self-employed spray plane pilot. He served in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Carole of Rapid City; son Bill Coon, Jr. of Rapid City; step-daughters Michele McCormack of Coos Bay, Ore. and Pam Dishong of Denver, Colo.; and two grandchildren. He also is survived by two brothers, Wayne Coon of Gordon and Morris Coon of Arlington, Va.; and sister Shirley McCue of Martin, S.D.

Mr. Coon's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 15, at the United Methodist Church at Gordon, with the Rev. Nita Gelling-Cloran officiating. Burial will be in the Gordon Cemetery. Memorials have been established for The Touch of Home and the United Methodist Church. Donations may be sent to First National Bank, P.O. Box 290, Gordon, NE 69343-0290. Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Donald Underwood, 86

(Aug. 14) ALLIANCE - Donald C. Underwood, 86, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born July 17, 1916, at Alliance, to Clell and Esther (Hatch) Underwood.

He married Anna Verna Bebensee on Dec. 3, 1936, at Bridgeport. He was the owner and operator of the Ringside Bar, and also served as the Box Butte County Sheriff for six years. He was a member of the St. John's United Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of the Elks, and the Eagles. He is survived by his wife Verna Underwood of Alliance; son and daughter-in-law, Woody and Sheila Underwood of Nipomo, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law, Tony and Pat OâConnor of Roseville, Minn., and Linda and Larry Stelling of Agua Dulce, Calif.; , five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren He also is survived by his brother, William "Bill" Underwood of Denton, Texas. His parents, and a daughter preceded him in death.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 16 at St. John's United Lutheran Church with Lyle Fodnes officiating. Inurnment will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Box Butte General Hospital or the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Reuben Wernke, 80

(Aug. 14) LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Reuben Wernke, 80, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Sunrise Hospital at Las Vegas. Mr. Wernke's memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Fr. Bryan Ernest officiating. Interment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.

John Bolen, 89

(Aug. 14) ANSELMO - John Bolen, 89, died Monday, Aug. 11, at the Jennie Melham Hospital at Broken Bow. He was born June 10, 1914, west of Anselmo, to Archie and Edna (Jacquot) Bolen.

He attended Merna High School. He married Ruth Bowley on June 5, 1942. He farmed and ranched in and around Anselmo, was on the school board in Eureka Valley, and worked as a custodian at Anselmo grade school. He was employed for a time with Rotors of Kearney and many years with Pandorf Fencing. He was a member of St. Anselm's Catholic Church, and an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Anselmo; sons Leonard (Wanda) Bolen of Colusa, Calif., David Bolen of Alliance, Joe (Darlene) Bolen of Denver, Colo., and Dale (Gerri) Bolen of Thornton, Colo.; daughter Myrtle (Jim) Babcock of North Platte; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one brother, Edward (Lila) Bolen of Anselmo. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Alice Eacker and Mary Paylor; brother, James Bolen; son Charles Bolen; and great-grandson, Hunter Roberson.

Mr. Bolen's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at St. Anselm's Catholic Church, with Fr. Todd Philipsen officiating. Burial well be in the Dale Catholic Cemetery. Wake services will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at St. Anselm's. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at the funeral home. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.

W. Neil Colerick, 82

(Aug. 16) ALLIANCE - W. Neil Colerick, 82, died Tuesday, August 14, 2001, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. He was born January 5, 1919, at Antioch to Roy and Pearl (Bennett) Colerick.

He married Mildred Campbell June 5, 1938, at Alliance. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was elected to the Alliance City Council in 1965 where he served for nine years, three of those years serving as Mayor. He was appointed by Governor Norbert T. Tieman as one of the Board of Directors of the Nebraska Department of Economic Development in November 1968, and served on the board until June 1981. He was appointed by Governor J. James Exon as a member of the Western Nebraska Technical Community College Area Board on June 12, 1973, and served on the board through June 1977. He served for many years as chairman of the Alliance Chamber of Commerce Industrial Committee, and was presented the Cornerstone Award in June 1984. He received the Boss of the Year Award from the Alliance Jaycees in 1968. He served on the Board of Directors at the Nebraska Boysâ Ranch, and was president in 1984. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and had served on three boards within the church, the Deacons, the Elders, and the Trustees. He was a member of the Alliance Masonic Lodge #183 where he was past president, member of the Nebraska York Rite, the Alliance Scottish Rite Bodies, and the Tehama Temple Shrine. He was a charter member of the Cattle Capital Shrine Club and served as president in 1973 and 1986. He was a life member of the V.F.W. and the Alliance Elks Lodge and a member of the Eagles, American Legion, and Rotary. He was also a member of the National Advisory Board of the National Federation of Independent Business, Inc.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Lona and Robert Muske of Commerce City, Colo. and Debra and Ken Seeger of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; brother, Robert Colerick of Tulsa, Okla.; sisters, Hazel of Denver, Colo., and Maxine of Calif.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, six brothers, and three sisters.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, August 17, at the First Presbyterian Church, with Reverend Arlys Wilbur officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Shrine Burn Center, the Good Samaritan Health Care Center or Knight Museum. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

George W. Crouse, 86

(Aug. 16) MULLEN - George Washington Crouse, 86, died Thursday, Aug. 15, at his home. He was born on March 8, 1916, at Grant, as the sixth of nine children of O'Dell and May (Brumbaugh) Crouse.

He worked on various ranches in the Sandhills. In 1939, he broke horses as a civilian at Fort Robinson. In 1940, he was drafted into the Army to break horses for the government. On May 19, 1941, he married Anna Neal at Paxton. In 1948 the family moved to Ashby where he spent 28 years as a mailman, deputy sheriff and brand inspector. He and his wife moved to Mullen in 1993. Kids and grandkids spent many happy miles accompanying him on the mail route. He enjoyed going to auctions and bringing home lots of "bargains." He had lots of animals at his home and enjoyed caring for them. He is survived by his wife, Anna of Mullen; son, Louis "John" (Denise) Crouse of Orland Park, Ill.; daughters, Rosemary (Hugo) Weber of Wichita, Kan., Georgann (Larry) French and Jo (Dick) Macke of Mullen; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Mr. Crouse's funeral will be at 10 a.m. MDT, Monday, Aug. 19, at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Burial will be in the Cedarview Cemetery at Mullen. A Rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. MDT, Sunday, Aug. 18, at the church. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. MDT, Saturday, Aug. 17, and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. MDT, at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to the Hooker County Historical Society or the donor's choice. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Doris E. Campbell, 81

(Aug. 17) ALLIANCE - Doris E. Campbell, 81, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at her home. She was born July 26, 1920, at Winner, S.D. to Charlie and Delta (Case) Fanning.

She married Richard O. Cox in 1938 and later married Connie Campbell in 1960. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed sewing for her friends. She is survived by her granddaughters, Sandy Perkins and Kathy Sterner of Alliance; grandsons, Rusty Tasso of Northglenn, Colo. and Larry Watson, Jr. of Alliance; brother, Rusty Fanning of Alliance; sisters, Lavonna Porter of Ontario, Ore. and Aletha Bostron of Twin Falls, Idaho; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, two sisters, one granddaughter, and her children, Nancy Lee Cox, Patricia Ann Watson, Barbara Jean Swallow (Tasso), and Richard Charles Cox.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 18. at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Pastor Walter Cline officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given in care of the family for a memorial to be established at a later date at, 1821 CR 57, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

JoAnn McMaster, 69

(Aug. 17) WESTMINSTER, Colo. - JoAnn McMaster, 69, died Monday, August 13, 2001, at St. Anthony's Hospital at Denver. She was born May 30, 1932, at Grant County, to Andrew R. and Jessie L. (Haney) Jones.

She married William F. McMaster on October 4, 1949, at Denver, Colo. She is survived by her husband, William F. McMaster of Denver, Colo; son, Monte G. McMaster of Denver; daughters, Cindy McMaster of Starkville, Miss., Debby McMaster of Evergreen, Colo., and Jan and Steve Rorabaugh of Fort Collins, Colo.; brother, William Jones of Keystone; and seven grandchildren. She also is survived by sisters, Berneice Wright of Alliance, Maxine Osborne of Fort Collins, Colo., Shirley Gillespie of Omaha, and Janet Burt of Vail, S.D.; brother-in-law, Orum McMasters of Alliance; and 36 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, five sisters, and one son, Scott.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 18, at the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, with Father Paul Mottl officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the Denver Children's Hospital, 1678 Franklin Street, Denver, CO, 80221. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Elden L. Hanna, 81

(Aug. 17) MONMOUTH, Ill. - Elden L. Hanna, 81, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at Community Care Center at Monmouth. He was born April 10, 1920, at Bayard. His parents were George Max and Gertrude Jess (Imus) Hanna.

He graduated from Bayard High School. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1941 and served in Hawaii during World War II. He married Mildred Helen Schwarting May 25, 1947, at Batesland, S.D. She preceded him in death May 5, 1961. He worked for CB&Q Railroad as a fireman, brakeman and engineer.until his retirement in 1982. He was a life member of the V.F.W. and the Lutheran church. He is survived by three daughters, Cynthia Van Allen of Dallas, Texas, Maxine Hanna of Denver, Colo., and Trudy Sincel of Minden; two sons, Joe Hanna of Denver and John Hanna of Alexis, Ill.; and nine grandchildren. He also is survived by three sisters, Lavone Ricklefs of Mitchell, Ilma Gabariel of Faith, S.D., and Lois Ash of Summerfield, Fla.; and one brother Elwood Hanna of Wheatland, Wyo.

Mr. Hanna's graveside Commital Service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 24, at the Alliance Cemetery, wity Pastor Martin T. Schnare officiating.

Lois E. Sulzbach, 69

(Aug. 17) SPEARFISH, S.D. - Lois E. Sulzbach, 69, Spearfish, died Friday, August 16, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Lois Elaine Rust was born July 26, 1933, at Alliance, to Hall and Clara (Tice) Rust.

She grew up on a farm near Alliance. She graduated from Alliance High School in 1950. She attended Chadron State College for two years and taught rural school in Box Butte County for three years. She was married to Harold Sulzbach on Dec. 14, 1951, at Alliance. In 1955 they moved to a dairy farm near Vale, S.D., where she helped until 1986 when they moved into Vale. She worked as a secretary for three years. From 1990 to 1993 she and her husband worked in summers at the Camp Bob Marshall near Custer. They moved to Spearfish in 1996 and she has continued to do volunteer work. She attended the Empire Friends Church at Vale, Nisland Independent Church, and the Belle Fourche Wesleyan Church. She lead the Stone Croft Ladies Bible Study, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a 4-H Leader and a teacher's assistant. She is survived by her husband, Harold of Spearfish; one son, Gary (Terry Ann) Sulzbach of Cleveland, Tenn.; three daughters, Jacque (Dave) Miller of Ft. Collins, Colo., Sandra (Joun) of Russell, Kan., and Michelle Sulzbach of Broomfield, Colo.; and six grandchildren. She also is survived by one sister, Bonnie Jeanne Sulzbach and her daughter Barbara of Spearfish.

Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 20, from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with a family service at 7:00 P.M. and at the church for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Mrs. Sulzbach's funeral will be at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 21, at the First Wesleyan Church at Sturgis, S.D., with Pastor Pete Bonnichsen officiating. Burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery. The Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Fund or Belle Fourche Wesleyan Church.

Joseph F. Rizzi Jr., 82

(Aug. 17) ALLIANCE - Joseph F. Rizzi, Jr., 82, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at his home. He was born Sept. 9, 1919, at Cambria, Wyo. to Joseph and Lena (Podio) Rizzi.

He was a 1938 graduate of Alliance High School. While serving in the Army Air Corp during World War II he met his wife of 30 years, Bernice Rocco Rizzi, who preceded him in death in 1973. He served Alliance and surrounding merchants for over thirty years in the wholesale business. He was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, a life member of the American Legion Post 7 where he also was Past Commander, a life member of the Elks, and was a member of the Eagles for more than 25 years. He also was a member of the Panhandle Men's Club, and a past member of the Alliance Men's Bowling Association. He is survived by his five children, Larry and Marleen Rizzi of Roseville, Calif., Lynn Rizzi, and Lisa Rizzi, both of San Diego, Calif., and Mark Rizzi, and Dave Rizzi, both of Alliance; and grandchildren, Bryan Rizzi, and Jennifer Rizzi, both of Roseville. He also is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Orville Gilpin of Ainsworth; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. His parents, an infant sister, and his wife preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 20 at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Fr. Bryan Ernest officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Wake services will be at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 19, at the church. Memorials may be given to the St. Agnes Academy Foundation or the church. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mabel M. Porter, 104

(Aug. 17) ALLIANCE - Mabel M. Porter, 104, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at her home. She was born Feb. 27, 1898, at Custer County Nebraska to Samuel A. and Minnie Belle (Henry) Carr.

Her childhood was spent on a farm in Custer County and after receiving her education she taught in the rural schools for several years. She was married to Charles W. Porter on Sept. 25, 1919, at Broken Bow. They moved to Alliance in the fall on 1922 where he was employed by the C.B. & Q. Railroad until his death in 1927. She was a member of the First Christian church for over eighty years, a charter member of the B.P.O.E. Does, and active in the Rebekah Lodge for many years having received the Decoration of Chivalry from the organization. She is survived by her children, Lorraine Shell of Charlotte, N. C., Robert Porter of Houston, Texas, and Donald Porter of Arvada, Colo.; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by several nieces and nephews. Her parents, four sisters and one brother preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, Aug. 19, at the Bates-Gould Chapel with Rev. Walter Cline officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Prairie Haven Hospice, or the Colorado Children's Home at Denver, Colo., in care of the First Christian Church of Alliance. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

H. Glen Lotspeich, 67

(Aug. 19) BINGHAM - Howard Glen Lotspeich, 67, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital at Hastings due to injuries sustained in a farming accident. He was born March 3, 1935, at Alliance to Howard and Thelma (Wesley) Lotspeich.

He grew up and ranched south of Bingham and after leaving Bingham he was yard manager at Greeley Producers Sale Barn at Greeley, Colo. He also was a cattle buyer for Greeley Producers and N.F.O., and drove a cattle truck for several years before returning to Bingham to ranch. He married Lila Starke on May 7, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Lila Lotspeich of Bingham; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Gretchen Lotspeich of Alliance; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Ken Meyer of North Platte; step-sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Connie Starke of Pennsylvania, Ed and Connie Starke of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Joe and Joyce Starke of Hemingford; grandchildren, Kammi, Kelli, Christopher, Tony, Scott, Jessica, Lonnie, A.J., and Dan; and five great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Jan Lotspeich of Todd, N.C.; sisters, Jo Watkins of Alliance, Lynda Black of Sulphur, La., and Deena Micklesen of Edison, N.J.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. His parents, and one son, Ross, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at the Bingham Church, with Rev. Steve DeLisle officiating. Burial will be in the Bingham Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Bingham Church. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
