Lenore E. Burnham

York resident, 91

Lenore E. Burnham, 91, of York, passed away on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 18, 2004 at the Fairview Manor in Fairmont.

Lenore was born on Nov. 30, 1912 at Keen, Nebraska to Henry S. and Minnie (Hoffman) Haberman. The family moved to York and Lenore attended York High School. She was united in marriage to Oliver Ralph Burnham on July 5, 1929 at Belleville, Kan. The couple moved to California in 1945, and returned to York in 1977. Lenore worked for Freddie's Fabrics in York for 10 years, and enjoyed crafting and sewing. She lived at the Leisure Home in York for over 26 years, where she was very active in the activities there, especially playing cards.

Lenore was active with the St. Luke Ladies and was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in York, where she was involved with the CWF Ladies Group.

Survivors include one brother, Wilbert Haberman of Vista, Calif.; two foster daughters, Cassie Ellis of Lake Forest, Calif., and Jeannie (and her husband, Ray) Ruffner of San Jacinto, Calif.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; three step-sisters, Dee Mahl, Glenna Houle, Faye (Tom) Chapman all of Vista, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Esther Haberman of Tenino, Wash., and Georgia Burnham of York; her special friend Pamela (and her husband Boyd) Tietmeyer of York.

Lenore was preceded in death by her parents, her husband (O. Ralph Burnham) on Jan. 15, 1979, four brothers and two sisters.

It was Lenore's request that her body be cremated following her death. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004 at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in York with Pastor W. Ron Johnson officiating. There will be no viewing or visitation. Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church at York. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.

Leonard A. Johnsen

Bruning resident, 55

Leonard A. Johnsen, 55, of Bruning died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Bruning.

He was born to Leonard and Doris (Petersen) Johnsen Sr., on Feb. 1, 1948.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Johnsen of Bruning; son, David (Kindra) Johnsen of Firth; daughter, Hanna Johnsen of Bruning; grandson, Kellon Johnsen of Firth; mother, Doris Johnsen Zimmerman of Lincoln; brother, Darrell (Mary) Johnsen of Virginia, NE; sisters, Linda (Emery) Horton of Papillion, Cheryl (Jerry) Oswald of Bloomington, Ill., Nancy (Rick) Wilson of Papillion, Theresa Flessner of Corvallis, Ore., and Pam (Richard) Grzesiak of Omaha; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mike Bristol and Mary Ann of Thayer; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mary and Ivan Wellman of Waco, Judy and Mark Schernikau of Oakland; 10 nephews and 13 nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bruning. Visitation will begin Thursday, between 1 and 9 p.m., at the Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva. Graveside services will be held at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Bruning with Pastor Liddy Howard officiating.

Lenore E. Burnham

York resident, 91

Lenore E. Burnham, 91, of York, widow of Ralph Burnham, passed away on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 18, 2004 at the Fairview Manor in Fairmont.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete as of press-time. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.

Forrest Churchill

Idaho resident, 87

Forrest L. Churchill, 87, of Pocatello, Idaho, died Sunday morning, Jan. 4, 2004.

He was born April 21, 1916, at McCool Junction, to Charles and Blanche Churchill. After working the family farm through several years of the Dust Bowl, he moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, in 1938. There he began his career in retail sales.

He married Mona E. Stoneberg in August, 1940, at Idaho Falls. They had five children. He joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1943 to 1945. For the majority of his career, he was employed by Blocks Inc., and retired as executive vice-president on Jan. 1, 1980.

He was a member of the Methodist Church.

He is survived by two sons, Lee of Pocatello and Lance of Boise, Idaho; three daughters, Sandra of Boise, Sue of Pocatello and Dara of Las Vegas; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two sisters and one great-grandson.

Funeral services were held Jan. 9, with interment (including military rites) at the Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Pocatello.

Naline F. Hunter

Formerly of York, 93

Naline F. Hunter, 93, of Omaha and formerly of Grand Island and York, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Alegent Health/Immanuel Hospital.

She was born in Grand Island, the daughter of Zenobia and Carroll Locke on Oct. 2, 1910.

She lived in the York area between 1947 and 1968, owning and running her own maid service. She had a number of longtime clients in this area. She and her family resided at 1029 Division Avenue.

She moved to Grand Island in 1968, where she continued to run her service.

Survivors include her step-sons, James Hunter and Joe Price; sons, Stanley Hunter, Tonto Hunter, Tyrone Hunter, Santone Hunter; step-daughter, Mary James; daughters, Zenobia Conrad, Gretia Hunter, Theresa Ford, Rozetta Dailey; 40 grandchildren; and a host of great- and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold Hunter; sister, Espanola Price; brother, Ollie Locke; son, Hugo Hunter; and daughter, Cecila Ricks.

Wake services will be held Friday, Jan. 23, from 6-7 p.m., at the Myers Funeral Home in Omaha. Funeral services will be held at St. John's AME Church on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m.

Josephine Kuta

York resident, 95

Josephine M. "Josie" Kuta, 95, of York, and formerly of Loup City, passed away at The Hearthstone Care Center in York on Thursday morning, Jan. 23, 2003.

Survivors include her daughter, Maxine (and her husband, Don) Osentowski of York; and two sons, Raymond (and his wife, Virginia) Kuta of Lincoln, and Don (and his wife, Darlene) Kuta of Bella Vista, Ark.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete as of press time. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph Epke

York resident, 83

Ralph Epke, 83, of York, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at York.

He was born March 5, 1920, in York County, to Henry and Frieda (Reisner) Epke and was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York.

He was a longtime York and Waco area farmer and also sold Pioneer Seed products for over 20 years. He was also a member of the National Corn Growers Association.

On Sept. 19, 1953, he was married to Ardis Burhoop of York.

He is survived by his wife, Ardis, of York; one son, Clark, and his wife, Beverly Epke of Lincoln; one daughter, Courtney and her husband, Jeffrey Bird of Plattsmouth; three grandchildren, Effie Epke of Lincoln and Alexandra and Keenan Bird of Plattsmouth; two brothers, Walter Epke of St. George, Kan., and Wilbur Epke of York; three sisters, Elta Davis of York, Paula (Alfred) Behmer of Lincoln and Dama (Julian) Lind of York; nephews, nieces and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Rudolph; and four sisters, Alma Epke, Anna Ranes, Norena Rich and one in infancy; and one grandson, Zak Epke.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York with Rev. Arthur Brinkmeyer and Rev. Timothy Marshall officiating. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in York. Memorials may be directed to Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York. Visitation begins after 1 p.m., Monday. Leo C. Barry

Arkansas resident, 69

Leo C. Barry, 69, of Hot Springs Village, Ark., died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004.

Born on May 21, 1934, on a farm outside of York, Leo attended Saint Joseph's School there, graduating from high school in 1952. He attended Saint Benedict's College in Atchison, Kan., for two years before joining the U.S. Army, where he served for two years. He graduated from Peru State College in Nebraska City in 1958 with a degree in business.

Newly married to the former Patricia Buckholz, he moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where he began his career in the insurance industry at Columbia Mutual. A year later, he moved to Council Bluffs, and then joined Greater Iowa Life Insurance Company in Des Moines. In 1967, after Greater Iowa was acquired by Life Investors, Leo was named administrative vice president and moved his family to Marion, Iowa, beginning his more than 30-year association with Life Investors/AEGON USA.

In 1980, Leo became president of South Central Underwriting in Chattanooga, Tenn., a job he held until he returned to Cedar Rapids as executive vice president of the Individual Division of AEGON USA. In 1994, Leo was appointed president of the NOL Division of AEGON in Little Rock, Ark. He retired in 1999.

He served on the Board of Directors of Life Investors and several other companies, and was an original member of the Regis-LaSalle Foundation in Cedar Rapids. A devoted Catholic, Leo was an active, participating member of every parish to which he belonged.

Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; his parents, Leo D. and Eileen, and his brother, Dan.

He is survived by his children, Gerianne (Kevin) Coffey, Philip (Natali) Barry, Brigid (Mark) Skoog, Erin Barry, and Angela (Jim) Lensing; his fiancee, Mary Jo Kurten; his sisters, Anne (Robert) Rissi and Kathleen Magrath; and 12 grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 30, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 295 Balearic, Hot Springs Village, at 5 p.m., with a prayer service to follow at 5:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nature Conservancy of Arkansas, 601 North University Avenue, Little Rock, 72205 or the Xavier High School Foundation, 6300 42nd Street NE, Cedar Rapids, 52411. Arrangements are under the direction of Cedarvale Funeral Home in Hot Springs Village.

Kathryn Bostrom

Colorado resident, 87

Kathryn (Kay) Bostrom, 87, of Fort Collins, Colo., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at Fort Collins.

She was born April 22, 1916, at York to R.L. and Naomi (Seng) Kaliff. She attended elementary school at the Maple Grove country school south of York and was a 1933 graduate of York High School. She was also a graduate of Hastings College.

She taught in a number of schools in Nebraska and western Iowa and met her future husband, Marvin J. Bostrom, while they were both teaching at York High School. They were married June 7, 1942, at Ojai, Calif.

The couple moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., where her husband received his PhD in music education. They then resided for many years in Fort Collins where Marv was on the faculty at Colorado State University.

Kay was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Fort Collins, the President's Club of the University of Nebraska Foundation, as well as PEO. She enjoyed traveling, spending time with many friends and her church activities.

Survivors include her sister, Peg (Miles) Hildebrand of York, and her brother, William J. (Bobbie) Kaliff of Grand Island; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976 and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Monday, Jan. 26, at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Collins with inurnment on Jan. 27, at Kimball. Allnutt Mortuary in Fort Collins is in charge of arrangements.

Leo Norman

Stromsburg resident, 84

Leo Charles "Kingfish" Norman, 84, of Stromsburg, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

He was born July 30, 1919 in Stromsburg to Charles Leo and Bertha (Borrows) Norman. He attended school in Stromsburg.

Leo was united in marriage to Norma LoJean Rinck on June 14, 1946.

Leo was employed at Overland Sand and Gravel in Stromsburg where he was a laborer for 30 years.

Leo was well-known historian for Stromsburg and Polk County. His many friends would gather around his table for coffee and his famous stories. If anyone wanted to know something about history, they would always come to see Leo. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Norma, of Stromsburg; one son, Jim of Des Moines, Iowa; twin daughters, Carol Wagner of Stromsburg and Connie Johnson of Fairmont, W.V.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Van Norman of Mount Dorath, Fla.; and five sisters, Elsa Douglass of Omaha, Gladys Dahl of Bullhead City, Ariz., Blanche Keyes of Goodyear, Ariz., Margureitte Eby of Paso Robles, Calif., and Dorothea Lovell of Stromsburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Carl Norman and David Norman; and three sisters, Charlotte Yeadon, Marie Iwan and Ruth Denman.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg with Pastor Richard Melano officiating. Inurnment will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery at a later date.

Roberts-Dubas Funeral Home in Osceola is in charge of arrangements.
