Marilyn Lortz

Lincoln resident, 75
Marilyn A. Lortz, 75, of Lincoln died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002.

She was born on July 25, 1927, at Cordova to August and Mary (De Camp) Jensen.

She is a retired employee of Notifier Alarm Systems. She is past three time Noble Grand of Charity for the Rebekah Lodge #2, a neighborhood watch coordinator, a volunteer at the Havelock Senior Center, and a devoted mother and loving wife.

She is survived by two sons, Lucky (Phillis) Lortz of Colorado Springs, Colo., Thomas (Sheila) Lortz of Lincoln; two daughters, Linda (Walter) Day of Lincoln, Mary (John) Teten of Omaha; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five brothers; seven sisters.

She was preceded in death by her husband John, one granddaughter, parents, and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 29, at 11 a.m. at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 South 14th St., Lincoln. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and one hour before services on Friday. Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association. Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park.

A reception at I.O.O.F. Hall at 1101 B, 56th St., will follow services.

Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Helen E. Schoepf

Seward resident, 81

Helen E. Schoepf, 81, of Seward died May 27, 2003.
She was born April 19, 1922, the daughter of George P. and Iva Jane (Gribble) Anstine. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Seward and Ladies Aid/LWML and a life member of Seward VFW Post #4755 Auxiliary. She was a former bookkeeper for Seward Sale Barn and Medow Tire of Seward.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Clifford, Robert and Max Anstine; and her nephews Jerry Anstine and Paul Anstine.

Survivors include her husband, Wilmar P. "Bill" Schoepf of Seward; her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Karel Schoepf of Seward; her daughter and son-in-law, Trudy and Brian Gocke of York; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a sister, Edith Hafemeister of Seward; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wayne and Ruth Schoepf of Milpitas, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation was Wednesday, May 28, from noon until 8:30 p.m. at Wood-Zabka Funeral Home of Seward.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 29, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward with the Rev. Mark G. Cutler officiating. Burial will be in Seward cemetery.

Memorials may be given in care of the family to the donor's choice.

Gary A. Lay

Lincoln resident, 57

Gary A. Lay, 57, of Lincoln, died May 26, 2003.
He was born Dec. 2, 1945, to Albertus N. and Rachel (Sass) Lay in Fremont, Neb.

He graduated from Fremont High School in 1964 and attended Doane College for two years. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and also received a master's degree in history from UNL, where he was a member of Theta Xi Fraternity.

He married Karen Fenster of York on Aug. 9, 1970. He taught school and coached football and track for the Norfolk Jr. High Schools and later worked for the Nebraska Energy Office. While there he hosted the TV show, "Easy On Energy."

Since 1984 he was employed with Nebraska Municipal Power Pool and was a Chief Operating Officer for A.C.E.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, where he was an usher and former elder. He was a member of Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, Arts Ambassadors and the Lincoln Trap Club. He also coached his daughter's softball team for several years.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Lay of Lincoln; a son, Chad Lay of Lincoln; a daughter, Andria Lay of Omaha; his parents, Albertus and Rachel Lay of Glenvil; a brother and sister-in-law, Gregg and Crystal Lay of Hastings; nieces and a nephew; and special "boys," Beau and Baxter.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 30, at 2 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Lincoln with Dr. Luke Schnake officiating.

Visitation will be Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home and Friday from 1-2 at the church.

Interment will be at Lincoln Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church or the Boy Scouts of America.

Ernest McBride

North Platte resident, 85

Ernest C. (Mac) McBride, 85, died May 23, 2003, in North Platte.
He was born April 14, 1918, to Herman and Verna (Wagner) McBride in York and graduated from York High School in 1938.

He served in the Army during WW2, receiving two bronze stars and a purple heart. On Jan. 16, 1946, he married Laura Spiers in Elko, Nev.

Besides his wife Laura, Mac is survived by three daughters: Tamara (Harry) Pribbanow of Roy, Utah, Trudie (Mike) Miller of McAlester, Okla., and Jodi (Kirk) Jacobs of Mullen, Neb.; nine grandchildren; Mike Pribbanow of Ogden, Utah, Troy Pribbanow of Roy, Utah, Chris Pribbanow of Lakewood, Colo., Todd (Karen) Miller of DuBois, Pa., Kris Salinas of Glendale, Ariz., Andy (Mindy) Wright of Lincoln, Kelly (Wade) Marsh of Minden, Joel Jacobs of Kearney and Jessse Jacobs of Mullen; five great-grandchildren and "Ben." He is also survived by one sister, Dorothy Girardin of Broken Bow; two brothers, Robert (Hilda) McBride of Mesa, Ariz., Lauren (Doris) McBride of Early, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Donna Caricaburo of Lincoln. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, J. H. (Junior) McBride.

Mac and his family lived in Broken Bow for 25 years where he was in the seed business before becoming manager of the Broken Bow Country Club. He was also manager of the Vet's Club in Lexington before moving to Mesa, Ariz., in 1985. In 1995 he and Laura moved to Mullen.

Mac liked to play golf especially with his grandsons. He kept track of the many courses he played on, with the Sand Hills Golf Club in Mullen the 50th and final entry in his journal. He enjoyed playing cards and watching Cubs baseball.

Funeral services were held in Mullen on May 28, 2003. Burial was in the Cedarview cemetery in Mullen.

Margaret Ferguson

Friend resident, 88

Margaret Mary Ferguson, 88, of Friend died Monday, June 9, 2003, at the Friend Manor in Friend. She was born May 14, 1915, on a farm northwest of Friend in Fillmore County to Patrick Frances and Mary Margaret (Regan) O'Brien, the oldest of two children.
She attended rural school and graudated from Friend aHigh School with the class of 1934. She tehn attended college and worked at Millera nd Paine in Lincoln until her marriage to Robert Thomas Ferguson on Sept. 6, 1951. A son, Robert, was born to this union.

They made their home at several locations in the states while Robert served in the U.S. Air Force. After his retirement they returned to Friend in 1965. Margaret was a member of St. Joseph's CAtholic Church and Altar Society in Friend. She also was a member of the DAV Auxiliary and Air Force Sergeant's Association. She later worked for a tim as a dietary aid at Warren Memorial Hospital in Friend.

She is survived by her son, Robert (Susan) Ferguson of Lincoln; grandchildren, Amanda and Alyson Ferguson; nephew, patrick (Linda) O'Brien of Bradshaw; niece, Linda (Dave) Long of Norton, Kan., and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert in 1987, her brother Linus O'Brien

Betty Fitzpatrick

Massachusetts resident, 74

Betty J. (Green) Fitzpatrick, 74, of Gardner, Mass., formerly of Bradshaw, died Tuesday, June 10, in the Baldwinville Nursing Home, Baldwinville, Mass.
She was born in Bradshaw on July 6, 1928, daughter of William D. and Jesse Irene (Schall) Green and had lived in Gardner since 1994.

As a military wife, Mrs. Fitzpatrick lived in ten states and three foreign countries, where she worked as a civil service secretary. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and its choir. She enjoyed genealogy, singing in church and community choirs and writing poetry. She was a 1944 graduate and class valedictorian of Bradshaw High School.

Her husband of 49 years, Donald Fitzpatrick, died in 1995. She is survived by two sons, Thomas Fitzpatrick of Owings, Md., and Mark Fitzpatrick of Union, Ohio; a daughter, Sharon Imig of Westminster, Mass.; a brother, William D. Green of Miami, Fla.; three grandchildren; one nephew and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 79 Cross St., Gardner. Burial will be in Plainfield cemetery, Bradshaw, at a later date. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, Mass. 01701 or to the Patients Activities Fund, care of Baldwinville Nursing Home, 51 Hospital Road, Baldwinville, Mass. 0-1436. The Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon St., Gardner, is directing arrangements.

Rex Leon Bell

Lincoln resident, 83
Rex Leon Bell, 83, of Lincoln died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002.

He was born to Guy and Myrta (Crowder) Bell on Aug. 3, 1919, in Beaver Crossing. He was retired from the State of Nebraska Department of Roads and was a 50-year member of American Legion Post #3.

Survivors include his wife, Velma (Parrish) Bell of Lincoln; son, Leon (Anita) Bell of Tonganoxie, Kan.; daughters, Patricia (Anthony) Callandar of Greenville, S.C., Barbara (Michael) Sherman of Plano, Texas; grandchildren, Dr. Wylie (Jennifer) Bell of Pittsburg, Kan., Jill Weaver of Charlotte, N.C., Craig (Lissette) Volz of Columbia, S.C., Steven Sherman of Ashville, S.C.; great-grandchildren, Sydney and Addison Weaver of Charlotte, N.C., Gabrielle Volz of Columbia, S.C.; brothers, Keith (Libby) Bell of Lincoln, Duane "Skip" (Evelyn) Bell of Rochester, Minn.; sisters, Treva (Val) Springer of Lincoln, Roselma Bell of Lincoln, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Evelyn Divis, Verna Mae Bell, Retha Peterson and Jean Larsen.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 S. 14th St., Lincoln. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday with family greeting friends and relatives from 2 to 4 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., all at the funeral home. Memorials may be sent to the donor's choice.

Russell Strand

York resident, 78

Russell G. Strand, 78, of York, died Aug. 6, 2003. He was born in Forestburg, S.D., on July 6, 1925, to Oscar and Georgia (Garrett) Strand.
He was retired from the sales department at John Kohl Auto Center. He was a member of the American Legion, B.P.O.E., and he was a World War II Navy veteran. He enjoyed a good story, good food, and good friends. He loved his family.

He is survived by his children, Billie Strand of Minnesota, Becky (Merle) Peterson of York, Cindy (George) Maly of Lincoln and Sue (Conrad) Fix of Cortland, Bobbie Strand and Kim Larango of Montana; a son, Jeff (Annette) Strand of Wisconsin; a sister, Ole (Strand) McLearen of New Jersey; mother-in-law, Claribel Feenstra of South Dakota; and grandchildren, Michael Maly of Lincoln, Casey, Tabitha and Lauren Fix of Cortland, Jeff and Annette Strand, Garrett and Connor Strand of Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rita; and brother, Douglas.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 10 a.m. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York. A burial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, at Woonsocket, S.D.

Paul J. Tuepker

York resident, 81

Paul J. Tuepker age 81 of York formerly of Gresham, NE, died Thursday, August 7, 2003 in York.
He was born January 7, 1922 in Gresham to John and Bertha (Schneider) Tuepker and was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Gresham.

He was employed at the Gresham Co-op for over 25 years. He was a member of the Lutheran Layman's League and enjoyed going to antique sales, loved baseball and was an avid fisherman.

He is survived by one brother Elmer and his wife Lois Tuepker of York. A nephew Jim and his wife Deb Tuepker of Lexington and a niece Judy and her husband Don White of Seward.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday and St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Gresham with the Rev. Tim Prince officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the church.

Visitation begins after 1 p.m. on Saturday. The family will greet friends and neighbors from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening at Metz Mortuary in York.

Glenn Luce

Kearney resident, 81

Glenn E. Luce, 81, of Kearney, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
He was born on June 8, 1922, in Grant to Charles A. and Inez (Frink) Luce. He grew up in Central City and graduated from high school there. He attended Kearney State College for two years. He entered the United States Army on March 5, 1943, and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 15, 1945. On Oct. 7, 1945, he was united in marriage to Edna Bolt. The couple made their home in Kearney. He was employed by the Kearney Hub and Nebraska Job Service.

He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church, VFW, American Legion, 1733 Barbershop Chorus and Dixie Land Band.

Survivors include his wife, Edna; daughter, Connie Fie; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters and a son.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Kearney. Interment with military honors will be at the Kearney cemetery by the VFW Post 759, American Legion Post 52 and the National Guard Unit of Kearney. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., Friday at the O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney. Memorials are suggested to the Glenn and Terry Luce Music Scholarship Fund at UNK.
