Loren "Mac" McMillin
York resident, 91
Loren "Mac" McMillin, 91, of York, died Jan. 25, 2002, at York.
He was born Sept. 30, 1910, at Springfield, Mo., to Harvey and Nancy McMillin.
He married
Hazel White on Aug. 8, 1929. Hazel died on Aug. 12, 1986. On Oct. 17, 1987, he married
the former Marie Staehr. Marie died Sept. 25, 2000.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge and served more than 65 years in the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Utica.
He is survived by his grandson, Jay (Alisha) McMillin of Chubbuck, Idaho; daughter-in-law, Ilene McMillin of Kearney; sister, Golden Dillie of Ash Grove, Mo.; a stepson, Fred (Jeanie) Staehr of Jackson, Wyo.; a stepdaughter Barbara (Willie) Driewer of York; two step-grandsons; two stepgranddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives and a son, Lee.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m., at the Metz Chapel in York, with the Rev. Harry Brown officiating. Burial will be at the Utica cemetery in Utica. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., on Sunday.

Kevin Wempe
Former York resident, 50
Kevin C. Wempe, age 50 of Greeley, CO, died Monday, January 7, 2002 in Greeley. He was born July 28, 1951 in York to Dr. Charles M. and Helen J. (Huber) Wempe. He attended St. Joseph's Grade School and was a 1969 graduate of York High School.
Kevin was a nature lover, avid outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman and gardener. He was a Life Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow and had spent his first summer after high school as Quartermaster on the staff at Camp Cornhusker Boy Scout Camp at Humbolt, NE. where he also taught camping, lifesaving, canoeing, archery and marksmanship. Kevin had an unusual flair for cooking and preparing special foods. He enjoyed sports especially football.
Kevin attended the University of Nebraska Lincoln and while a student at UNL he was employed by Williamson Oldsmobile and then by Park Place Pontiac-Cadillac in Lincoln where he was a General Motor's Certified Cadillac Master Mechanic. Locally he had been employed by Sunflower Beef Pack, Batterton Waterproofing and Pickens Sandblasting & Painting where he was a Crew Manager. In 1990 he moved to Lakewood, CO where he worked for Economy Lumber, BMC WEST, managing the Truss Manufacturing Division, which was moved to Greeley, CO in 1993. In 1996 he was employed by Bonnell Samaritan Care Center as Renovations Manager, in charge of internal renovations and outside contracting at their Greeley, CO. facility.
Kevin was united in marriage to Tammy Sackschewsky on October 1, 1977. On January 20, 1995 he was married
to Beth Ann Manwaring.
He is survived by his twin daughters, Amanda Jane (Wempe) Larson and Valeri Lynn (Wempe)(Larson) Cain; his granddaughter, Katelynn Cain all of Mulvane, KS; his parents, Dr. Charles M. and Helen J. Wempe of York; two brothers, Dr. Michael & Karen Wempe and James & Gina Wempe all of Colorado Springs, CO; nephew, Jonathan Wempe and niece Lauren Wempe both of Colorado Springs, CO. Also surviving are his stepdaughters, Heather (Manwaring) Pfeifer of Lakewood, CO. and Kimberly (Manwaring) Rousey of Colorado Springs, CO. and a family friend Mandi (Jeremy) Juedeman of Clearfield, UT.
Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday at 10: 00 a.m. at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York with Fr. Leo Sieker. Rosary services will be held on Friday at 7: 30 p.m. at the Metz Chapel in York. Inurnment will be at St. Joseph's cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Joseph's School, Boy Scout Troop #174 or Adopt-A-Pet.

Dale D. Awtry
Dale D. Awtry, 77, of Ogallala died Jan. 15, 2002, at Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus.
He was born on April 21, 1924, at Stockville, Neb., to Oliver and Lydia Gifford Awtry. He attended school at Stockville and was a member of the Stockville High School class of 1943.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 with the 208th Engineering Construction Battalion. He saw action in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medal.
Dale married
Norma Thomsen on April 1, 1946, in Oberlin, Kan. He enrolled in the electrical department at Milford Trade School, and graduated in 1947. He was employed with several electrical contractors in York from 1947 to 1951.
He began work for Consumers Public Power District in 1951 and worked for Consumers and Nebraska Public Power District for 37 years in a variety of jobs. During this time he and his family lived in Superior, York and Exeter before moving to Ogallala in 1969. Dale retired from NPPD in 1987.
He was active in the church, the Oddfellows, RSVP, Meals on Wheels, and many other volunteer organizations.
After suffering a stroke in 1998, Dale resided at Indian Hills Manor in Ogallala. He moved to Columbus in 2001 to be near family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma; sister, Beulah; and brothers, Wayne and Gerald.
Survivors include sons Lonnie (Eva) Awtry of Grand Island, Donald (Jade) of Vallejo, Calif., and Philip (Tammie) of Columbus.
Following cremation, there will be a memorial service on Monday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational, United Church of Christ in Ogallala with the Rev. Eric Wait officiating. Memorials have been established in his memory or they can be given to the donor's choice. Inurnment will be in Fort McPherson National cemetery at a later date. Gladys Wilson
Chula Vista, Calif., resident, 91
Gladys I. Wilson, 91, of Chula Vista, Calif., formerly of Gresham and York, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001 at Chula Vista.

Robert Dunwoody
York resident, 79
Robert H. Dunwoody, 79, of York, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, in Omaha, Nebraska.
He was born January 8, 1923, at Denver, Colorado, to Harold and Edith (Guyer) Dunwoody.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn N. Brower Dunwoody of York; one son, John (Alicia) Dunwoody of Los Angeles, CA; one daughter, Pamela (Merlin) Green of Lincoln; two sisters, Marion Littlejohn of Denver, CO, Dorothy Miller of Grand Junction, CO; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2: 30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 14, at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva, NE. Graveside services will be held at the Geneva Public cemetery in Geneva with the Rev. Jay Mitchell officiating. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., Sunday, at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva, which is in charge of the arrangements.

Frank B. Armstrong, 89, of Roseville, Calif., and formerly of York, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, in Roseville.
Services are pending at Metz Mortuary in York.
Helen McLaughlin
Edgar resident, 92
Helen M. (Vap) McLaughlin, 92, of Edgar died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Helen was born Dec. 16, 1909, near Deweese, Neb., one of seven children born to Joseph and Mary (Zlatkovsky) Vap. She attended schools in Deweese and Fairfield, graduating from the Fairfield High School in 1926. She was married
to Paul Dewayne McLaughlin in 1927 in North Platte. To this union, ten children were born. They made their home on a farm near Edgar. They moved into the community in the early 1950s.
Helen worked as a cook for the Edgar Public School lunch program and the Sandy Creek School system. She later cooked for the nursing home in Edgar. Her husband died on Sept. 2, 1989. She was a member of the Church of the Plains and the Ladies Circle at the church. She became a resident of the Sutton Community Home in Sutton in 1999.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; infant son; son, Dean; grandson, Troy McLaughlin; great-grandson, David Bohling; three brothers, Al, Ted and Ray; and two sisters, Chris and Delores.
She is survived by six daughters, Shirley Harms of Hastings, Janice Buckles of Delphos, Kan., Gayle (Leonard) Lamp of Lahoma, Okla., Sharon (William) Kenley of Edgar, Sallie (Bill) Scheve of York, Linda (Don) Bruns of Sutton; three sons, Craig McLaughlin, Bill (Ruth) McLaughlin, both of Edgar, Clark McLaughlin of Greenwood, Ark.; brother, George Vap of Hastings; 25 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m., at the Church of the Plains in Edgar, with the Rev. Jay Snell officiating. Burial will be at the Edgar cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the McLaughlin Funeral Home in Clay Center today (Thursday) as well as Friday at the Church of the Plains in Edgar from 9 a.m. until services. Memorials may be given to the church.

Edwin Kamprath
Seward resident, 84
Edwin "Ed" O. Kamprath, 84, of Seward died Jan. 7, 2002.
He was born on June 21, 1917. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, Lutheran Layman's League, and A.A.R.P. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Martha Kamprath; daughter, Karen Fritts; brother, Alfred Kamprath; and brother-in-law, Chris Vogel.
He is survived by his wife, Ferne of Seward; daughter, Kathryn (Rev. Steven) Sirek of Lincoln; son, David (Holly) Kamprath of Lincoln; five grandchildren; brothers, Carl (Ruth) Kamprath of Seward, Gerhard "Gus" (Vanita) Kamprath of Seward; sister, Esther Vogel of Seward; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation was from noon to 8: 30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Wood-Zabka Funeral Home in Seward and one hour prior to the service at the church.
The service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 10, at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward with the Rev. Mark Cutler officiating. Burial will be in the Seward cemetery with full military honors by VFW Post #4755. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice in care of the family.
Irene Ferrell
Former McCool resident, 91
Irene (Bachman) Ferrell, 91, of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of McCool Junction, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Fort Myers.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Metz Chapel in York.
Rowena Steven
York resident, 102
Rowena Steven, 102, of York died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at York.
She was born March 15, 1899, at Shelton, Neb., to Alexander and Elvira (Schenk) Steven. She moved to York County in 1910 where she entered the third grade of the York Public School system. She was a 1919 York High School graduate and then attended York College under the E.U.B., graduating in 1923.
She was an active member of the East Avenue United Methodist Church in York (formerly the E.U.B. Church) where she served in numerous offices, including those as steward and Sunday School teacher. She was a longtime member of the Evening Star Rebekah Lodge in York, as well.
She is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Greenwood cemetery in York with the Rev. Jo Harper officiating. Visitation will begin after 5 p.m., on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to the donor's favorite charity. Metz Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy Roberts
Wisconsin resident, 91
Dorothy E. Roberts, 91, of Brookfield, Wis., died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, in Brookfield.
She was born March 2, 1910, in Ft. Wayne, Ind. On Sept. 2, 1931, she was married
to James R. Roberts at Fort Wayne. He preceded her in death in December 1997.
Survivors include two sons, David (Lonnie) Roberts of New Berlin, Wis., and John (Carol) Roberts of Aurora, Colo; one daughter, Patricia (Paul) Lamey of Palm Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at the Metz Chapel with the Rev. Ralph Ford officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery in York. Visitation will begin one hour prior to services. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.
Bill Travis
Peyton, Colo., resident, 75
Bill W. Travis, 75, of Peyton, Colo., and formerly of York, Neb., and Colorado Springs, Colo., died at his home in Peyton on Thursday morning, Dec. 20, 2001.

Bill Travis
Peyton, Colo., resident, 75
Bill W. Travis, 75, of Peyton, Colo., and formerly of York, Neb., and Colorado Springs, Colo., died at his home in Peyton on Thursday morning, Dec. 20, 2001.
Bill was born on May 20, 1926, at Hampton to Ortha Grant and Daisy Juanita (Misner) Travis. He attended school and graduated from Hampton High School in 1946. Bill left school for a time during 1944 to work at the Cornhusker Ordnance Plant in Wood River, Neb.
Bill was united in marriage to Mildred Louise Brunk on April 25, 1948. Following their marriage, the couple lived in York where Bill worked for Deluxe Cleaners for eleven years. In 1961, Bill and his family moved to the Colorado Springs area, where they lived for 25 years, and then moved to Peyton, Colo., where he has resided since 1985. Bill worked in the construction business as a bBlaster and heavy equipment operator, having worked as a "powder monkey" (blaster) on the construction of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) Base on Cheyenne Mountain near Colorado Springs from 1961 through 1966. He retired in May of 1988. Bill was a longtime member of Union Local #578 in Colorado Springs.
He was a former member of the East Avenue United Methodist Church in York and the Highway Baptist Church in Falcon, Colo., and at the time of his death was attending Galley Road Baptist Temple in Colorado Springs.
Survivors include two sons: Ronald Lee (and his wife, Sandi) Travis of Canon City, Colo., and Bill Warren (and his wife, Cheryl) Travis of Keller, Texas; two daughters: Kristie Lee (and her husband, Bill) Patton of Peyton, Colo., and Denise Louise (and her husband, Jerry) Wiggins of Bonifay, Fla.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother, Deryl Lee (and his wife, Marjorie) Travis of Lincoln; nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mildred on May 11, 1995, and three brothers (Wallace "Bud", Jim, and Gary Travis).
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Greenwood cemetery in York with Pastor J. Keith Bateman officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in York. Memorials may be made in care of Hospice of the Comforter of Colorado Springs. Betty Schaldecker
Grafton resident, 75
Betty L. Schaldecker, 75, of Grafton died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2001 at Henderson. She was born April 12, 1926, at York to George H. and Clarca (Ankeny) McGregor.
Betty was a 1944 graduate of York High School. On June 29, 1946, she married
Jacob J. Schaldecker of Concordia, Kan., and they lived and farmed all their married
lives near Grafton.
Survivors include her husband, Jacob, of Grafton; sons, Terry Schaldecker of Grafton and Randy Schaldecker of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter, Becky and Tim Benson of Waco; three grandchildren, Chad, Cory and Charissa Songster; a step-grandson, Adam Benson; seven great-grandchildren; four sisters, Cora Cotner of York, Maxine Kopcho of Nampa, Ida., Hazel Lutz of Beatrice and Verna Jean Schaldecker of York; nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, infant son and three sisters.
Graveside services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Lushton cemetery. Visitation will begin on Thursday at 9 a.m. Memorials may be directed to the Grafton Rescue Unit. Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.
