Ethel Bear
Wyoming resident, 72
Ethel Elizabeth Bear, 72, of Greybull, Wyo., died Thursday, April 5, 2001 at her home in Greybull.
She was born Feb. 13, 1929 at Sundance, Wyo. to Wesley and Lucille Straight. She attended school in Sundance and moved with her family to Buffalo, Wyo. in 1943.
She was married
to Ernest Stanley Bear at Sundance in 1946. He died March 4, 1960.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters, and six brothers.
She is survived by Tom Davies, her companion of many years; daughter,
Cheryl (Larry) Kennedy of York; two granddaughters, Brenda (Russ) Pulling and Andrea (Jim) Renshaw, all of Denver, Colo.; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Lyle Straight of Palmer, Alaska, Bill Straight of Palmer, Alaska, and Ron Straight of Buffalo, Wyo.
Services will be Monday, April 9 at the Atwood Chapel in Basin, Wyo.
Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church of York for the Sunday School library.
Vernon Holm
York resident, 83
Vernon G. Holm, 83, of York, died Saturday, March 17, 2001 at York.
He was born Sept. 27, 1917 at Royal to Phillip and Minnie Holm. Following his education, he farmed with his brother in the Royal area until he entered the Army during World War II, during which he served in central Europe. He was later employed at the Campbell Soup Company in Omaha for 19 years. He was married
to Melva M. Hoffschneider at Waco on Oct. 3, 1954 and they moved to York after Vernon's retirement from Campbell's.
He was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of York.
Survivors include his sons, Vernon (Dorene) Holm Jr. of San Dimas, Calif., and Joseph Holm of Lincoln; and three granddaughters.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, five brothers and one sister.
Due to the construction at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, his funeral will be held at the Faith Lutheran Church in York on Friday, March 23 at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Art Brinkmeyer officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery in York. Visitation will begin Thursday at 9 a.m.

James Clair Wolstenholm
James Clair Wolstenholm, 76, died March 18, 2000, at Boise, Idaho. Memorial services will be held Friday, March 24, at First Nazarene Church in Boise, with burial in Cloverdale cemetery in Boise.
Hilda Horton
Colorado resident, 96
Hilda Horton, 96, died March 19, 2001, at Alladen Rest Home in Kenensburg, Colo.
She is survived by two sons and their families; one daughter and her family; brothers, Lawrence Conell of Loveland, Colo., Delnor (Emma) Conell of Waco; sisters, Olivia Bolte of McCool Junction; Vada (Erwin) Schmidt of Waco; Garnet (Marion) Ackerman of Dakota, Ill.; sister-in-law, Elfrieda Conell of Northwood, Iowa. Two sons preceded her in death.
Raymond Petersen
Former York County resident
Raymond Walter Petersen, 76, a former York County resident, died Sunday, March 11, 2001.
He was born in Cordova, the son of Rev. William and Marie Petersen on Aug. 1, 1924. He grew up the third of nine boys in the rural area of St. Paul's Lutheran Church north of York, where his father was the pastor for many years. He attended the Christian Day School, located on the St. Paul's church property, for eight years. He graduated from Benedict High School in 1942.
He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II, and again in the Korean Conflict. After military service, he resumed his college education at Concordia Teachers College in Seward.
After graduating, he married
Edna Peiman at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in San Antonio, Texas, where they were both teachers. He then received his Master's Degree in Education at the University of Nebraska.
He served as a principal in many Lutheran schools, including at Brenham, Texas; Pasadena, Texas; Topeka, Kan.; and at Houston, Texas.
After his wife's death in 1988, he served another 11 years at St. Mark's in Houston as a Minister of Visitation.
Ray and Evelyn Bond were married
on July 9, 1992.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; sons, Thomas (Deborah) Petersen and Mark (Janice) Petersen; daughter-in-law Calisse; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three step-children; and four brothers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Edna; son, John; and four brothers.
Services were held Wednesday, March 14, in Houston.
Almeda McDuffee
York resident, 102
Almeda Mary McDuffee, 102, of York, died Monday, March 19, 2001 at York.
She was born Dec. 4, 1898 in Hays Township near McCool Junction to Martin A. and Ida C. (Lake) Van Vleet. She moved to Colorado Springs with her brother in 1945 and returned to York in 1949. She was married
on Nov. 8, 1949 in Grand Island to Elmer M. McDuffee. Elmer preceded her in death in 1977.
Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Gabriel McDuffee of Wheatridge, Colo., Bill McDuffee of York, Kela Hinkle of Lexington, Joyce Rhoades of York, Edrie Van Vleet of York, Lloyd Hager of Imperial and Delbert Hager of Texas.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, five brothers and three sisters.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday, March 22, at the Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Ralph Ford officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the Greenwood cemetery. Visitation will begin Wednesday morning.

Charles Bittinger
Benedict resident, 79
Charles F. "Bud" Bittinger, 79, of Benedict, died Sunday, March 11, 2001 at Lincoln.
He was born on May 30, 1921 at Benedict to Arthur G. and C. Luella (Johnson, Kohn) Bittinger. He attended Benedict Schools and graduated in 1938. After graduation he farmed with his father until his induction into the Army during WWII where he served with the US Army Air Corps in the Pacific. After the war he returned to Benedict where he engaged in farming, then later worked for the Farmers Co-op in Benedict until his retirement in 1987. On Feb. 19, 1943 he was married
to Lucie Jane Scamehorn in Salt Lake City, Utah. She preceded him in death on March 19, 1962. He married
Joan Heiden at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on September 29, 1963. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church at Thayer.
Survivors include his wife Joan of Benedict and children and their spouses; Steve and Lynn Bittinger and Carolyn Sue and Joe Simmons all of Orange, Texas; Cal and Pat Bittinger of Benedict; Clay and Jackie Bittinger of Henderson and Cheryl Bittinger of Lincoln. Grandchildren; Lisa Reed and Fiancee Joe Greer of Orange, Texas; Robbie Bittinger of Houston, Texas; Brandon and Shelbi Bittinger of Benedict; Tori, Jordan and Ashley Bittinger of Henderson. Great-grandchildren; Brittany Reed and Joseph Tyler Greer of Orange, Texas. Also surviving are his sisters, Carol Bittinger and Evelyn I. Folts both of York. Many nieces and nephews. Besides his first wife Lucie, he was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mercedes Watson and grandson Travis Bittinger.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church in York with the Rev. Lee Seetin. Military graveside services will be in the Greenwood cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Martha Kluver
Columbus resident, 97
Martha Kluver, 97, of Columbus, died Friday, March 9, 2001 in Columbus.
She was born June 4, 1903 in Valley County near Ord, Nebraska to August and Mathilde (Ziemke) Graul. She graduated from Ord High School in 1920 and attended the University of Nebraska. Mrs. Kluver taught in the rural schools of Valley County, Nebraska, 2 years in Chappell, Nebraska, and in the primary grades in the Columbus Public Schools. She married
Walter Kluver in Columbus on September 6, 1929. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith as a young girl at the age of 14, and attended the First Baptist Church in Columbus for many years where she was active as a soloist and choir member, Sunday School and Bible School teacher, and a member of the Women's Missionary Society.
Martha served for 30 years in Girl Scouting in Columbus and held a life-time membership in PTA, she served on the Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Columbus and Platte County Historical Society. Martha enjoyed music, reading, sewing, knitting and crocheting.
Irene Brumbaugh
York resident, 82
Irene A. Brumbaugh, 82, of York, died Friday, March 9, 2001 in Aurora.
She was born Oct. 8, 1918 at Stromsburg to Chris and Mabel (Vincent) Thesing. She was a 1936 graduate of Stromsburg High School and attended Kearney State Teachers College in Kearney. She was a bookkeeper having worked at O.L. Clark Lumber Co. in York, the Stromsburg Coop and 14 years at Greenwood cemetery in York before retiring. She married
Clay Brumbaugh on May 17, 1947 in York. He died in 1996. Irene was a member of the Bradshaw United Methodist Church and the Bradshaw VFW Auxiliary.
Survivors include four daughters, Judy (Tom) Varco of Ft. Collins, Colo., Lonnie Crosby of Crete, Mabel "Snookie" Grossnicklaus of Kimball, and Carol Peterson of York; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a very special friend and relative, Bernice Anderson of Stromsburg. Preceding her in death were her parents, two husbands and an infant son, infant grandson and an infant brother.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bradshaw United Methodist Church with the Rev. Seth Leypoldt officiating. Burial will be in the Plainfield cemetery west of Bradshaw. Memorials are suggested to the church, Greenwood cemetery or the York County Veterans. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements.
Traci Rios
Lincoln resident, 32
Traci (Ward) Rios, 32, of Lincoln died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001.
She was born in Osceola on June 1, 1968.
Survivors include her son, Daryl Wilson of Lincoln; husband, Al Rios and family, Lincoln; parents, Barb and Dennis Ward of Lincoln; sisters, Terri (Jeff) Drager, Teresa (Chondo) Haynes, Kim Ward and friend Christopher Jones, all of Lincoln, and Kelly Ward; nine nieces and nephews; and grandfather, Wendell Terry of York.
She was preceded in death by her father, Rodney Lee Kilgore; infant son, Teddy; stepdaughter, Jessica Binnick; grandparents; and two infant nephews.
A memorial service was held Friday, Feb. 16, at Princeton Countryside Alliance Church in Princeton. The Rev. Nathan Reckling officiated. The body was cremated. Memorials may be sent in care of the family to Metcalf Funeral Home, 245 N. 27th St., Lincoln.
Eleanor Kohtz
Hastings resident, 81
Eleanor D. (Junge) Kohtz, 81, of Hastings died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Bryan LGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
She was born May 17, 1919, to Otto and Lena (Maronde) Junge in Benedict.
She graduated from Benedict High School in 1935 and attended college for one year. She taught school in Bradshaw. On Dec. 11, 1938, she married
Harold Kohtz. She worked as a cashier at Champion Auto in Hastings for several years. She and her husband owned and operated Kohtz Sale Company in Hastings until 1984 when they sold the business. On Aug. 16, 1989, her husband died.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. She was a past member of the Optimists Club and United Commercial Travelers.
Survivors are two daughters, Connie Toohey of Fort Collins, Colo., and Sandy Kohtz of Hastings; three sons, Eugene and Howard, both of Hastings, and Marshall of Lincoln; four sisters, Laura Harlow of Hastings, Gladys Rathert of Ava, Ill., Betty White of Delavon, Wis., and Ruth Ann Vandenbos of Gresham, Ore.; two brothers, Raymond and Wallace, both of York; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers and one grandchild.
Services were held at 10: 30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 17, at Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Carl Rehwaldt officiating. Burial was in Parkview cemetery in Hastings. Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings was in charge of arrangements.
Faith W. Dahlstedt
Arkadelphia resident, 78
Faith Adele Wickersham Dahlstedt, 78, of Arkadelphia died Saturday, February 17, 2001 at Twin Rivers Rehabilitation Care Center in Arkadelphia. The daughter of George and Abbie Nelson Wickersham, she was born August 8, 1922, 15 miles from the village of Harrison, in a log house on Chain Lake Ranch, Hatcreek Valley, Sioux County, Nebraska.
For eight years she attended a one-room, country grade school. Following graduation from high school, she attended Grand Island Business College. At that institution, she passed a civil service test and at the age of 18 she was employed by the War Department in Washington, D.C. At the outbreak of World War II, she was transferred to Headquarters, Army Air Forces. Upon her resignation from the Army Air Forces, General H.H. Arnold presented her with a citation for outstanding civilian service.
During the war, she had saved money to attend the University of Nebraska. At that institution, she earned an associate's degree in business administration. She also was employed by a professor and assisted him in typing his text books. After graduation, she married
Waldo Arthur Dahlstedt. They remained at the university until he finished his Ph.D.
Since 1955, the family has resided at Arkadelphia, where she enjoyed her participation in church functions, the PTA, the Cub Scouts, political activities and the Chamber of Commerce. She was also a member of social clubs such as the HSU Faculty Women, the Red Rose Garden Club, the American University Women and the Arkadelphia Chapter of AARP. She donated her time to Meals on Wheels and the literacy council. In 1964, she earned a BSBA at Henderson State University. After her husband retired, they traveled to many foreign countries, visiting every continent except Antarctica.
Survivors are: Her husband, Waldo Arthur Dahlstedt; one son, David Wayne Dahlstedt and his wife, Becki of Mountain View; one daughter, Georganne Kay Bowsher and her husband, Lee of Vista, California; one granddaughter, Erika Lee Bowsher; one sister, Eula Campbell of Scottsdale, Arizona; and one brother, Norman Harris Wickersham of Harrison, Nebraska.
