Emma G. Kaiser, 94, of York died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, in York. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary in York.
Ivan Jackson
Shelton resident, 71
Ivan Eugene (Gino) Jackson, 71, of Shelton died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
He was born on Dec. 16, 1929, in Edgar to Don and Dorothy (Sieh) Jackson.
He entered the United States Air Force on Nov. 12, 1948, and was honorably discharged on Sept. 21, 1950.
He was married
to Jeryce Scott on Dec. 18, 1971, at Hastings. The couple lived in Hastings, and moved to Grand Island in 1973. They lived on a farm near Shelton for the past year. Jackson was self-employed as a brick mason. He installed sprinkler systems and cut and sold firewood. He retired in 1983.
He is survived by his wife, Jeryce; son, Jim T. (Jerry) Jackson of Grand Island; mother, Dorothy Walters of Grand Island; one grandson; two brothers, Jim E. Jackson of Grand Island and Robert Jackson of Lincoln; sisters, Donna (James) Kaliff of York and Bonnie Madison of Freeman, Mo. He was preceded in death by his father.
Services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 10: 30 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Curtis Holzworth officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery of Grand Island. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the All Faiths Funeral Home, 2929 So. Locust Ave., Grand Island.
Memorials may be directed in care of the family.
Pauline Myers
Shelby resident, 60
Pauline Helen Myers, 60, of rural Shelby died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
She was born on Jan. 11, 1941, at Newton, Kan., to Leonard W. and Alice (Drake) Harder. She attended school at various places including Omaha; Glendive, Mont.; Alsen, N.D.; and Luster, Mont. She graduated from Berean Academy at Elbing, Kan., in 1959. She then attended Grace Bible Institute in Omaha.
On June 16, 1961, Pauline was married
to Charles E. Myers at Reedley, Calif. To this union six children were born. The family lived in various places including Omaha, Long Pine, and Winona Lake, Ind.
The family began their service with the Rural Home Missionary Association establishing churches and residing at North Webster, Ind.; Bayard; Oshoto, Wyo.; Springfield, S.D.; Albion; and then to rural Shelby.
In all of the communities where the family served churches, Pauline was active in helping the youth. She was pianist at most of the churches they served.
Survivors include her husband Charles of rural Shelby; five sons, Charles (Luella) Myers of Arcadia, Larry (Tracy) Myers of Colorado Springs, Colo., Bryan (Diane) Myers of Stromsburg, Steven and Paul Myers, both of Tempe, Ariz.; one daughter, Sonya (Kirk) Holmes of Richfield; 11 grandchildren; mother, Alice Harder of Sioux Falls, S.D.; three brothers, Lloyd, Wayne, and Dale Harder, all of Sioux Falls, S.D., and three sisters, Eloise Harder of Taipei, Taiwan, Edith Klassen of Roeland Park, Kan., and Gladys Friesen of Mountain Lake, Minn.; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of relatives.
She was preceded in death by her father, Leonard Harder.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 7, at 10 a.m. at the Stromsburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Duane Tweeten and the Rev. Ron Klassen officiating. Burial will be at the Telbasta cemetery with a graveside service at 2 p.m. Visitation will be held today (Tuesday, March 6) from 4 to 7 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Memorials are suggested to the Joy Club of Marquette.
Rita Makovicka
Lincoln resident, 39
Rita Makovicka, 39, of Lincoln, formerly of York, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001 at her home in Lincoln.
Rita was a firefighter and EMT with the Lincoln Fire Department. She was born Sept. 2, 1961 at York to Francis and Frances (Mazour) Makovicka. She was a 1979 graduate of York High School where she was a member of the Girls State Championship Basketball team in 1977 and 1979. Rita was recognized as Female Athlete of the Century by the York News-Times. She attended the University of Wyoming with a basketball scholarship and was MVP at the Alaska Shoot-Out and All-American Basketball player. After graduation she was assistant volleyball coach at Western Illinois University and later taught and coached at the Harvard High School in Nebraska. She joined the Lincoln Fire Department in October of 1993. She was named Firefighter of the Year in 1999, and was a Unit performance award recipient in September of 1997 and February of 2000. She was chairperson of the Minority Recruitment Committee for the Lincoln Fire Department. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York.
Survivors include her mother, Frances Makovicka of York; brothers and sisters-in-law, George of York, Raymond and Betty of York, Leon and Judy of Fulton, Mo., Ronald and Debbie of York and Robert and Rebecca of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; sisters & brothers-in-law, Jean Farley of York, Jane and Lynn deKoning of Burchard, Mary and Geoff Gregg of York and Theresa and Marvin Hall of Norfolk. Also surviving is her special friend Marsha Rupert of Lincoln, sister-in-law Anita Makovicka of Orchard, and many nieces and nephews and aunts and uncles. Preceding her in death were her father; brothers, Leo and Bernard and sister Cecelia.
Memorial services will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. at the Firefighters Union Hall at 241 Victory Lane in Lincoln. Funeral services will be held at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York on Tuesday at 10: 30 a.m. with the Rev. Leo Sieker. Rosary services will be held at Metz Mortuary on Monday at 7 p.m. Burial will be in the St. Joseph's cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the family. Casket bearers are Dean Staberg, Mike Clements, Dale Wojtasek, Mark Linke, Ron Hassebroek, Scott Pearson, Eric Jones, James Riley, Shawn Podraza and Shawn Mahler. Visitation will begin Saturday evening.

Leo Monnier
York resident, 84
Leo Monnier, 84, of York, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2000 in York.
He was born March 5, 1916 in York to August and Ella (Lottes) Monnier. He married
Emma Buller on Sept. 12, 1948 at York. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a long-time York area farmer and former co-owner of York Oliver. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the York American Legion Post.
Survivors include three daughters, Elaine Monnier of Lincoln, Arlene Monnier of York, Sharon (Don) Nunnenkamp of York; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul (Marian) Monnier of Bradshaw, Robert (Delores) Monnier of Smith Center, Kan.; one sister, Mary Trim of Tucson, Ariz. He was preceded in death
by his parents, wife and two brothers.
Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Joel Rathbun officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery in York. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. on Saturday and 1-9 p.m. on Sunday.

Louise Hasenkamp
Stanton resident, 73
Louise Fassnacht Hasenkamp, 73, of Stanton, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Stanton.
She was born June 19, 1927, to Harley and Bertha (Roemer) Fassnacht southwest of McCool Junction. She went to District 4 country school for her elementary education and graduated from McCool High School in 1943, at 15. While in high school, she took normal training and started teaching in rural schools in the fall of 1943. She taught in York, Fillmore, Dodge and Clay Counties for a total of nine years.
She married
Warren Hasenkamp on June 7, 1953, in the First Lutheran Church in McCool. The couple had four children, and they lived and farmed in Cuming and Stanton Counties.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Stanton and was active in the Stanton community. She worked several years at Sherwood Medical in Norfolk, the Stanton schools and the Stanton Nursing Home until her health failed and she entered the Stanton Nursing home as a patient.
Survivors are her husband, Warren, of Stanton; one son, Stanley (Jeannette) Hasenkamp of Stanton; daughters, Janet Adams of Wayne, Tammy (Randy) Smalley of Norfolk, Cynthia (Keith) VanDerlin of Grand Forks, N.D.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers Ramer (Iola) Fassnacht of Hampton, Harley (Jo) Fassnacht of Aurora, Dwight (Margel) Fassnacht of Fairmont; sisters, Byrdene Thompson of Perry, Iowa, and Naomi Fassnacht of Fairmont; one aunt, Gertrude Roemer of Scribner.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harley and Bertha Fassnacht, and an infant brother, Wallace Fassnacht.
Services will be held Monday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m., at the Faith Lutheran Church in Stanton. Burial will follow at the Stanton cemetery.

Roger Dean Staehr
California resident, 60
Roger Staehr, 60, of Blythe, Calif., died Jan. 26, 2001. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps and was employed for 39 years with Chevron.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Doris; two sons, Steven Roger of Las Vegas, Nev., and Brian Dean of Manteca, Calif.; brother, Lavern Staehr of Utica; sisters, Lisa Senff of Hampton, Delores Liudzius of Glendale, Calif., Marlene Will of LaPorte, Ind., Roma Jean Bennetts of Bullhead City, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Larry D. Staehr.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 3, at noon at the Johnson Funeral Home, 17720 Monterey St., Morgan Hill,
Calif. Memorials may be given to a charity of the donor's choice.
J. Opal Pester
York resident, 95
J. Opal Pester, 95, of York, formerly of Lincoln, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, in York.
She was born in Waco on Oct. 29, 1905, to John and Cora (Fox) Hedrick. She was a past member of Martha Washington #153, O.E.S.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Hosea R. Blair and Melvin Pester; parents; brothers, Harry, Leo, Verle and Paul Hedrick; and sister, Blanche Hawley.
Graveside service and burial will be at 2 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Wyuka cemetery, 3600 O St., Lincoln. Visitors will meet at the front entrance.
Visitation will be Thursday at 2 p.m. until Friday at 1 p.m. at Roper and Sons, 4300 O St., Lincoln.

Mary Jo Kropf

Mary Jo Kropf, 70, of York died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at York.
She was born Aug. 21, 1930, at Ironton, Ohio, to David H. and Mary H. (Algeo) Hogsten. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary in York.
On Jan. 9, 1948, she was married
to Les Moore at Ironton, Ohio. She was then married
to Fred Kropf on May 1, 1953, at Nashville, Tenn.
She is survived by one son, Rick (Brenda) Kropf of Norfolk; two daughters, the Rev. Gloria J. Moore of Kansas City, Kan., and Karla (Jay) Werner of Humphrey; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and a special friend, Charlie Miller of York.
She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband and a stepmother.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 18, at the Metz Chapel with the Revs. Dennis Davenport, Bobbie Gibbons and Gloria J. Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery in York. Memorials may be directed to Tabitha Hospice Care in York. Visitation begins after 6 p.m., Tuesday evening, at Metz Mortuary in York.
Virgil Erb
Henderson resident, 67
Virgil W. Erb, 67, of Henderson died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Lincoln.
He was born June 11, 1933, at Shickley to Mose K. and Ida (Schweitzer) Erb. He attended school at Martland and was married
to Arlyce M. Peters on May 20, 1961, at Henderson. They moved to Henderson in 1962 where Virg worked at the Henderson Hardware until he bought the plumbing business in 1965. He was a member of the Bethesda Mennonite Church, Henderson Chamber of Commerce, Henderson Volunteer Firemen for over 30 years and he drove a school bus since 1981. Virg was an avid fast pitch softball pitcher and bowling fan.
Survivors include his wife, Arlyce of Henderson; sons, Scott (Cindy) Erb of Henderson and Kent (Lynette) Erb of Newton, Kan; daughter, Diana (Rob) Schunn of Whitewater, Kan.; grandchildren, Justine, Jarred, and Brenan Erb, all of Henderson, and Casey and Kylee Schunn of Whitewater, Kan. Also surviving are his brothers, Merlin (Bernetta) Erb of Shickley and Bob (Mary) Erb of Hesston, Kan.; sisters, Dorothy (Sam) Oswald of Oakland, Gladys (Les) Troyer and Norma (Jim) Troyer, all of West Point; Wilma Troyer of Beemer; sister-in-law, Ruth Erb of Shickley, and his mother-in-law, Lenora Peters of Henderson.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Alvin Erb; sisters, Mattie (Roy) Troyer, Mary Erb and Elsie Heyen; brother-in-law, Ivan Troyer; and his father-in-law, Arnold G. Peters.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 19, at 2 p.m. at the Bethesda Mennonite Church at Henderson with the Rev. Weldon Martens officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Henderson Health Care Services. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m., Wednesday. Metz Mortuary of Henderson is in charge of arrangements.
Ruth Hanson
Polk resident, 82
Ruth Hanson, 82, of Polk, died at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg on Saturday, April 14, 2001.
Ruth was born on Sept. 10, 1918 in Sorang, Halsingland Province, Sweden to Hans and Ida (Brodin) Meline. Her family came to America when Ruth was five years old and settled at Swede Home, which is near Stromsburg. Ruth attended Polk County schools and after completing her education, she worked in homes in the area as a nanny and housekeeper. As a young woman, Ruth went to Chicago where she continued working as a nanny and housekeeper. After several years in Chicago, she returned to Nebraska. On March 25, 1950, Ruth Meline and Edwin John Emfred Hanson were united in marriage in Polk. They farmed in the Polk area and moved into Polk in 1976. Mr. Hanson died on June 12, 1997.
Ruth grew up in the Evangelical Free Church and after her marriage, she became a member of the Arborville United Church of Christ near Polk. Ruth had belonged to the Women's Society in both the Evangelical Church and the Arborville United Church of Christ. She enjoyed baking and needlework.
Ruth is survived by one daughter, Eilene R. Hanson of Polk and one sister, Hannah Meline of Rockford, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband and four brothers, David, Paul, Reuben, and Phillip Meline.
Funeral services are Thursday, April 19 at 10 a.m. at the Arborville United Church of Christ near Polk with Rev. Lester Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Stromsburg cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, April 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Polk. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or the Arborville Church.

Mary Rossi
Denver resident, 93
Mary Rossi, 93, of Denver, Colo., died Jan. 30, 2001, at the Cornerstone Care Center in Denver, Colo.
She was born on Aug. 6, 1907, in Denver, Colo., to John and Mamie (Covillo) Capra. She graduated from West High School in Denver and worked for a number of years at Russell Stover Candy Company.
She was married
to Michael A. Rossi on June 14, 1925, at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Denver. She was a member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, and the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary.
Survivors include five children, Vincent Rossi of Denver, Elaine (Joseph) McCarthy of York, Joseph (Barbara) Rossi of Arvada, Colo., Alfred (Connie) Rossi of Denver, Veronica (Chuck) Mitchell of Plano, Texas; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother and a sister.
Funeral services were held in the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Welby, Colo., at 10 a.m. on Feb. 2, 2001, with the Rev. Gabriel M. Ramacciotti, O.S.M., officiating. Interment was in Mount Olivet cemetery.
