Richard Merrill Griffing

Richard Merrill Griffing, 71, died Sunday, August 8, 2004 at Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska.

Richard was born September 3, 1932 in Thornburg, Kan. to George G. and Bessie (Logan) Griffing. He graduated in 1949 from Smith Center High School in Kansas.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a cover operator at the rubber hose plant.

He married Lola L. Clark in North Platte on December 11, 1968. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and his nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife Lola in 1998 and a sister Delores Griffing.

Survivors include; three brothers, Warren Griffing and Wife Roberta of Prairie View, Kan., Norvin Griffing and wife Rose of Culbertson and Bernard Griffing and wife Esther of Kearney; a sister, Diane Roadhouse and husband Marion of Osborne, Kan.; nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were Wednesday, August 11th at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Park cemetery with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating.

Memorials were being accepted in his name.

Carl F. Grill

Carl F. Grill, 95, died Thursday, November 11, 2004, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, Nebraska.

He was born March 10, 1909, in Traer, Kansas to John H. and Lena (Schissler) Grill.

He received degrees from the University of Nebraska and Columbia University. On June 7, 1936, he married Helen Sandrock of Falls City, Nebraska. Carl entered the field of public education, then worked as a sales engineer for Mtn. States Tel. & Tel. in Denver, Colorado before retiring in Traer and McCook.

Proceeding him in death were his parents, John and Lena Grill; his wife, Helen Grill on July 19, 2003; and sister, Erma Grill on December 7, 2003.

Survivors include son, John S. Grill and wife, Luci, of McCook; daughter, Sondra S. Douglass and husband, Joe of Silverthorne, CO; sister-in-law, Dorothy Kratz of Lincoln; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m., at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jim Housch officiating. Burial took place at the Mausoleum of the Cross at Mt. Lindo, CO.

Michael Jay Hall

Michael Jay Hall, 33, of McCook died Saturday, May 22, 2004 at Community Hospital.

He was born September 14, 1970 to Jerry Wayne and Linda Lee (Tirrill) Hall at McCook. He graduated from McCook Senior High in 1990.

He played Legion baseball, wrestled in high school and was an avid pool player. He worked for Sitel for around seven years.

He married Mary Christiansen on January 16, 1993 in McCook.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Laverne Tirrill and grandfather, Clarence Hall.

Survivors include: his daughter, Alesha Hall of McCook; his parents, Jerry and Linda of McCook; a brother, Dennis and wife Deb Hall of Salina, Kansas; grandparents, Ruth & Ellsworth Brown of Trenton and Lester Tirrill of McCook; nieces and nephew, Ayla, Krista, Tab.

Funeral services were Wednesday, May 26th, 11 a.m. at the Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Memorials were accepted in his name.

Joan Lee (Frick) Haller

Joan Lee Haller, 75 died Sunday, March 12, 2006 at Sunset Manor in Frontenac, KS. She was 75 years old.

She was born in McCook on September 21, 1930 to Jake and Marie (Reinek) Frick, Jr.

She was raised on a farm east of Culbertson and later graduated from Culbertson High School in 1948. She worked for Safeway Grocery Store until her retirement in 1986.

Joan moved to Loveland, CO in 1973 and returned to McCook, in 1992 where she remained until 2003 at which time she moved to Pittsburg, KS.

Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Hahn of Ft. Collins, CO, Peggy Snyder of Pittsburg, KS, and Mary Whitaker of Lisbon, NY; a son, Jon Haller of Aurora, CO; a sister Betty Brecht of Beatrice; a brother Donald Frick of Downs, KS and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Darlene Hill, and a brother Richard Frick.

Memorial services and inurnment took place at Memorial Park cemetery.

Arrangements in Kansas by the Bath-Nayer Funeral Home, and local arrangements are under the direction of Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook.

Derek James Hamilton

Derek James Hamilton, 22, died Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at his home in McCook.

Derek was born on July 3, 1982, to James Jr. and Debra (Lytle) Hamilton. He graduated from McCook High School in 2001, Wyoming Tech in Laramie, Wyoming in 2002, and was Valedictorian at Audi Academy, ITT, in Chicago in 2002.

Derek worked at Stammler Imports in Boulder, Colorado before moving back to McCook in 2003. He was working for Valmont at the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bernard and Fern Lytle and James Hamilton, Sr.

He is survived by his parents, James and Debra Hamilton of McCook; two sisters, Melissa and Lucas Sahm of Omaha, Nebraska and Tina and Brad Reischl of Avoca, Iowa; two nieces, Mikayla Sahm and Jessica Sahm of Omaha and expectant niece or nephew from Avoca; grandmother, Lois Hamilton of McCook; uncles and aunts, Jay and Deb Hudgens, Darrell and Brenda Svoboda, Larry and Karen Siebrandt, and Linnea Ricley all of McCook, Rick and Sue Hamilton of Casper, Wyoming, Dave and Faye Dunworth of Mesa, Arizona; 15 cousins and many friends, and all who shared his joy and passion for cars.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Memorial services were Saturday, August 28, 2004, 11:00 a.m., at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Pastor John Strecker-Baseler as officiate.

Cammie Ellen (Morrison) Hampton

Cammie Ellen Hampton, 97, died Monday, July 19, 2004, at McCook Community Hospital.

Cammie was born on April 22, 1907, in Cherry County, Nebraska to Peter and Dorsa (Knipe) Morrison. She graduated from Mullen High School in 1927.

On July 2, 1927, she married Carlie Curtis Hampton in Mullen. To this union six sons were born. They eventually made their home in Alliance for 26 years where Cammie kept busy as a homemaker. She moved to the McCook community in 2002.

Cammie was a member of the Alliance Church of Christ and World War II Auxiliary #2749 in Alliance.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Carlie in 1967; and infant son, Peter; one brother, Woodrow Morrison; and three sisters, Mattie Higgins, Pearl Marsh, and Jean Boyer.

Survivors include five sons, Kenneth and wife, Lois of Ashby, Chester and wife, Delores, of Mitchell, Bruce and wife, Esther, of McCook, Harvey of Lexington, and Richard and wife, Hilda, of Culbertson; two sisters, Elda Shears of Mullen and Pauline Rector of Florida; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were at the Mullen United Methodist Church with Rev. Lila Slater as fficiate. Burial took place at the Cedar View cemetery at Mullen, NE.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Karen Kay (Pollnow) Hanke

Karen Kay Hanke died Thursday, March 10, 2005 at McCook Community Hospital. She was 66 years old.

Karen was born on January 12, 1939, at Oberlin, Kansas to Myron Lee and Pearl Edna (Pearson) Pollnow. She graduated from Decatur Community High School in 1956 and was homecoming queen in 1955.

On August 10, 1964, she married Dr. Vernon Harold “Bud” Hanke at Cheyenne, Wyoming. To this union two children were born. They made their home in McCook where Karen was a homemaker.

She was a charter member of the Open Door Extension Club in Red Willow County, volunteered and was president for two years for Meals-on-Wheels and room mother for her children’s school, and was an avid reader, flower gardener, and cook. She loved and cared for stray cats.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Myron and Pearl Pollnow.

Survivors include her husband, Bud Hanke of McCook; son, Chris Hanke and wife, Heather, of Lincoln; daughter, Shannon Hanke of Lincoln; three sisters, Doreen and husband, Everett Schuler, of Oberlin, Melvalyn and husband, Gary Guinn, of Oberlin and Connie and husband, Jerry Grochowski, of Pacifica, CA; three grandchildren, Farren, Broc and Greyson Hanke all of Lincoln; and beloved cat, Pebbles.

In lieu of flowers memorials were to be given to the McCook Library, Meals-on-Wheels or American Cancer Society.

A private family graveside funeral service was held Monday, March 14, 2005, 10:30 a.m., at Memorial Park cemetery with Pastor Clark Bates.

Charles Richard Hansen

Charles Richard Hansen died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at his home in McCook. He was 75 years old.

Charles was born on August 26, 1928, at Kenmare, North Dakota to Laurits Christian and Agatha Christina (Mengers) Hansen. He graduated from Dannebrog High School in 1946 and attended Dana College in Blair for one year.

On June 20, 1948, he married Arlene Mae Hatt. To this union four children were born. Together, Charles and Arlene were owner and operators of Hansen’s Market in Arlington for 34 years until they retired. They moved to the McCook community in 1996.

Charles was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and Lutheran Laymen’s League. He was a scout master for ten years and served on the town board in Arlington.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and one brother, David Hansen.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene Hansen of McCook; two sons, Michael Hansen of McCook and Charles “Tom” Hansen and wife, Pam, of Fremont; two daughters, Mary Ellen Russell of Omaha and Sonja Lea and husband, Boyd Yeager, of Las Vegas, NV; one brother, Ethan Hansen and wife, Pat, of Atascadero, CA; two sisters, Sara and husband, Neal Walter, of Blair and Ellen Schooley of Sacramento, CA; one sister-in-law, Doris Hansen of Aurora, CO.; nine grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service were held Saturday, June 19, 2004, 10:00 a.m., at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in McCook with Pastor John Strecker-Baseler. Burial took place in the Dannebrog cemetery.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Eugene Milton Hanson

Eugene “Gene” Milton Hanson, 73, of McCook died Friday, January 14, 2005 at Bryan LGH in Lincoln.

He was born in Beardsley, KS south of Stratton, July 25, 1931 to Clark and Edna (Canton) Hanson. He grew up in Stratton and graduated from Stratton High School in 1949.

Gene served proudly in the U.S. Navy from 1950-1954 during the Korean Conflict.

He lived most of his life in Orange, TX where he married and worked faithfully for Firestone Rubber Company for 34 years until his retirement.

In 1999 Gene moved home to Stratton in 1999. He married Vera Ingrid Hardy on January 22, 1999 at Olive Branch, MS.

He loved his children and only granddaughter and the church. He worshiped with his wife Vera at the Church of Christ in McCook and was a passionate fisherman.

Preceding him in death were his parents; twin baby sisters; and a step-mother, LaVera Hanson whom he loved dearly.

Survivors include his wife Vera Hanson of McCook; a daughter Debbie Kendrick; a son, David Hanson; and his beloved granddaughter, Robyn Kendrick, all of Orange, TX; a sister Joan Hartman of Aurora, CO; a step-sister Donna Jean Martin of Stratton; his three stepchildren who loved and respected him dearly; six step-grandchildren who thought the world of “Grandpa Gene”; his cousins and families; and a multitude of friends.

Memorials were accepted in his name.

Funeral services were Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at 2 p.m. CST at the Church of Christ (711 East G St.) in McCook with Allen Wilkerson officiating. Music provided by the Church of Christ. Burial followed at Rose Hill cemetery, north of Stratton.
