Wayne K. Gillen
Wayne K. Gillen, 75, died Saturday, January 12, 2008 at Community Hospital in McCook.
On April 12, 1932 he was born in McCook to Lawrence and Elsie (Shuck) Gillen. He attended McCook Public Schools and earned his GED in 1972.
He served in the U.S. Air Force and the National Guard for 35 years from 1950-1985 and retired as a First Sergeant from Company A 1/195th Armor of McCook.
He married
Arlene F. Smith in McCook on August 22, 1954 and they had four children.
Wayne especially enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren’s activities. He liked going to auctions, playing cards and his “office breakfast friends”. He farmed and loved the outdoors and was a devoted husband and father.
Preceding him in death were: his parents; two brothers, Donald and Dale; one grandson, Breck; and special aunt & uncle, Fred and Bonnie Johnson.
Survivors include: his wife Arlene of McCook; children and spouses, Judy Gillen of Omaha, Lance & Denise Gillen, Brad and Wendy Gillen, Kelli & Travis Zwickle all of McCook; and eight grandchildren, Spencer, Kelsey, Zayne, Kassidy, Easton, Jenna, Jett, and Brooklynn; brother-in-law, Donald Smith and wife, Karen of Colo. and special family friend, Linda Lu Lloyd of Omaha.
Memorials were being accepted in his name.
Memorial services were Wednesday, January 16th at 11:00 at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates and Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Inurnment took place in Memorial Park cemetery in McCook.

Paul Hamilton Gilbert
Paul Hamilton Gilbert died Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at Community Hospital in McCook. He was 98 years old.
Paul was born on November 22, 1909, at Fulton, Arkansas where he received his education.
On March 1, 1942, he entered the US Army and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on March 4, 1945. After his discharge, he returned to Garberville, California where he was owner and operator of Redwood Barbershop for 22 years. He later moved to Grants Pass, Oregon and most recently to McCook. He was residing at Hillcrest Nursing Home at the time of his death.
He was a past-member of the Lions Club, American Legion and Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. His hobby was cooking.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Augustus and Jonnie Gilbert.
Survivors include his daughter, Celia and husband, Glenn Robertson of Ft. Orchard, Washington; and many friends at Hillcrest.

There will be no local service. He will be buried at Eagle Point National cemetery at Eagle Point, Oregon.

Harlan Edward Geihsler
Harlan Edward Geihsler, age 81, died Monday, February 18, 2008 at the Decatur County Good Samaritan Center in Oberlin.
Harlan was born in Palisade on May 14, 1926 to Harold W. and Sophia M. (Kircher) Geihsler. He attended Palisade Public Schools.
He married
Anna Irene Lewis on August 12, 1947 in Oberlin, Kansas. To this union three children were born, Dean, Debra and Donna. They made their home southeast of McCook, where he enjoyed being a farmer since 1947. He was Santa Claus for 40 years for schools, nursing homes and families.
He was in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946 as a Squadron Leader. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign and received a Purple Heart for his involvement on Okinawa Island.
He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Anna on April 18, 2005; and brother, Gerald.
He is survived by his son, Dean of Colby, Kansas, daughters, Debra Geihsler of Boston, Mass. and Donna Geihsler of Wichita, Kan.; brother, Burdette Geihsler and wife, Gleannys of Benkelman; sister, Burdean Melchert and husband, Alfred of Stratton; six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Memorials were to be given in his name.
Funeral services were Thursday, February 21, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place in the Danbury-Marion cemetery.

Kenneth Wayne Gates
Kenneth “Wayne” Gates died (Wednesday) January 2, 2008 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, NE.
He was born May 22, 1935 to Kenneth C. and Clara Malinda (Nickerson) Gates in Hayes County, NE. Wayne attended rural school in Hayes County, graduating from Hayes County High School in 1952.
Wayne married
Margaret L. Hand on May 23, 1959 in Culbertson, NE. They made their home in Palisade, NE. Wayne work for a number of years at Nelson Feed and Produce. He then worked for Palisade Motor Company eventually purchasing the business doing automotive work with his son until his health would no longer allow.
Wayne was a member of the Palisade Rural Fire Department from 1961 to 1968. He loved hunting and fishing, especially when his grandchildren were involved. He also took pride in fixing and painting vehicles. Wayne enjoyed the outdoors and especially roses. He made a rose garden in front of the automotive shop and spent a lot of time tending his rose garden so that it flourished for all to see.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; a son Dawayne Vaughn Gates in 1975; and a brother, Darwin L. Gates.
Survivors include: his wife, Margaret; son Kirk of Palisade; a daughter Patricia and husband Don Neel of McCook; six grandchildren, Joshua, Ira James, Tyler and Bret Neel and Lou Gates all of McCook and Kim Gates of Imperial; a brother, Bryce Gates and wife Lavora of Colorado Springs, CO; a sister-in-law, Aloha Gates of Kansas City, MO; and nieces and nephews.
Memorials were to be given in his name.
Funeral services were held on Monday January 7, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the Palisade United Methodist Church with Pastor Judy Dye officiating. Interment will be in the Palisade cemetery.

Juanita Jane (Morrow) Fisher
Juanita Jane Fisher died Saturday, March 15, 2008 at her home in McCook. She was 50 years old.
Juanita was born on January 8, 1958 in Germany to Loren Eugene and Deloris Jane (Alexander) Morrow while her father was there in the military. She graduated from Central High School in Salina, Kansas in 1975. She continued her education at Salina Area Vocational Tech School earning a certificate in Janitorial Services.
On September 5, 1987, she married
James Michael Fisher at the Curtis Park. They made there home in McCook where Juanita was a homemaker.
Juanita loved to garden, play hand-held computer games and collect frogs.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Loren and Deloris Morrow; two infant twin sisters; and her maternal grandparents, Virgil and Juanita Alexander and paternal grandparents, James and Alice Morrow.
Survivors include her husband, James Fisher of McCook; two sons, Jeremy Jackson and fiancé, Lisa, of Lincoln and James Jackson and fiancé, Carolyn, of Omaha; one sister, Rita and husband, Bryan Wiegert, of Gretna; four brothers, Virgal Morrow and wife, Angela, of Valley Falls, KS, Loren Morrow and wife, Marla, James Morrow and Billy Morrow all of Salina, KS; and four grandchildren.
Memorials were to be given in her name.

Doris Mary (Covert) Fahrenbruch
Doris Mary Fahrenbruch died Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook at the age of 87.
She was born in McCook on September 3, 1920 to Floyd M. and Doris M. (Jennings) Covert. She grew up in Culbertson and attended school there, graduating from the Culbertson High School in 1938.
She married
Harry P. Fahrenbruch on June 16, 1940 in Culbertson. They were blessed with two sons, David and Dennis. They spent most of their married
life on their farm north of Culbertson. Doris enjoyed the many groups she was involved in including; Trinity United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Methodist Choir, and Help-A-Lot Club. She was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Doris Covert; and husband, Harry P. Fahrenbruch on May 16, 1997.
She is survived by her twosomes, David Fahrenbruch and wife, Delores, of McCook and Dennis Fahrenbruch of Culbertson; one sister, Marjorie Schlegel of McCook granddaughters, Judy, Anne, Christine, Nanette, and Amy; five great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials were to be given in her name.
Funeral services were Tuesday, June 3, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson, with Rev. Richard Melano officiating. Burial took place in the Culbertson cemetery.

Dessa Frances (Richter) Phares
Dessa Frances Phares passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial. She was 93 years old.
Dessa was born on July 4, 1914, in Hayes County, Nebraska, to Logan Marion and Della Grace (DuVall) Richter. She graduated from Hayes Center High School in 1930 and attended the University of Nebraska receiving her formal training certificate. She also attended McCook Junior College. Dessa taught school in various rural schools in Hayes County for several years.
On July 18, 1937, she married
Harley LeRoy Phares at her parent’s home in Hayes County. To this union three daughters were born. They moved to Ogden, Utah shortly after their marriage where Harley was employed with the Civil Service. They returned to the Palisade community in 1946 and settled on the family farm. Dessa was a busy homemaker as well as sales associate for JC Penney. She retired in 1979, after nearly 30 years of service.
Dessa was a long time member of the Palisade United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She taught Sunday school and vacation bible school and served on various church committees. She was instrumental in forming the Acolyte program for the church. She was also a member of the Helping Hand Extension Club, Over the Hillers Camping Club, Builders Class and Community Service Club. She volunteered her time serving as a 4-H Leader and Girl Scout Leader. In her free time, she loved to sew, do craft work, cook and bake, and read and write poetry.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Logan and Della DuVall; husband, Harley on February 23, 2004; infant granddaughter, JoLee Ann Schutte; son-in-law, Bernie Schutte; three brothers, Homer, Merle and Raymond Richter; sisters-in-law, Mildred Richter, Sally Richter; Beth Richter, and Marie Phares; brothers-in-law, Albert and Richard Phares.
Survivors include her three daughters, DeAnna Schutte, Judy and husband, Gary Malone, and Jenene and husband, Jerry Smith, all of Palisade; one brother, Warren G. Richter and wife, Melba, of Corona, CA; one brother-in-law, Phil Phares and wife, Rita of Grant; one sister-in-law, Wilma Phares of Salem, OR; six grandchildren, Michael and wife, Leota Schutte of Seward, Michelle Schutte and Jess Duncan of Ravenna, Elizabeth and husband, Scott Susag of Scobey, MT, Christyn and husband, Justin May of Duluth, MN, Jeffrey and wife, Julie Smith of Albuquerque, NM and Matthew and wife, Jamie Smith of Gilbert, AZ; and nine great-grandchildren, Alex, Elisabeth, and Ethan Schutte, Daniel, Shania and Tristyn McCormick, Samuel and Madison Smith and Jackson Smith; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Memorials were to be given in her name to the Palisade United Methodist Church, Palisade Fire Department or Palisade Community Foundation.
Funeral services were Monday, June 16, 2008, 10:30 a.m., at the Palisade United Methodist Church with Pastor Judy Dye officiating. Burial was in the Palisade cemetery.

Robert Ernest Peters
Robert Ernest Peters died Saturday, April 5, 2008 at Willow Ridge Retirement Community in McCook. He was 91 years old.
He was born, May 7, 1916 in Red Willow County northwest of Marion to John Coleman and Mina (Drain) Peters. At age three he moved with his family southwest of McCook to the present farm in Hitchcock County. He attended rural school and McCook High School.
Robert married
Velma Elizabeth Liebrandt at Ash Creek St John’s Lutheran Church on May 7, 1936. She died on December 24, 1975. He then married
Olive Bolles in McCook in 1976 and she died on July 25, 1997.
He lived in this community all of his life and was an active and progressive farmer who took great pride in the husbandry of the land. Robert had the privilege to farm with four generations of his family and enjoyed watching the blossoming of a fifth generation. He lived on the farm southwest of McCook and raised corn, wheat, sorghum, and cattle for 70 years before retiring and moving to Willow Ridge in McCook in 2006.
He loved his family, grandchildren, and especially great-grandchildren. He had a passion for farming, cars and traveling (especially in Alaska).
Robert was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, the Elks Club, and a past member of the Nebraska Wheat Growers Association and the Red Willow Weed Board.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velma; his second wife Olive; granddaughter-in-law, Mindy Lutz; and sister-in-law, Elaine M. Peters.
Survivors include: special friend, Virginia Myers; children, Deanna Anderson and husband George of Bismarck, ND, Sandra Lutz of Lafayette, CO, Randy Peters and wife Elaine and Rodney Peters and wife Marlyn all of McCook; brother Floyd Peters of Mesa, AZ; sisters Elaine Stevens and husband Ralph of McCook and Evelyn Hall and husband Carrol of Norton, KS; 14 grandchildren, Mark Anderson, Kent Anderson; Pamela Lutz, Deborah Lutz, Douglas Lutz; Christine Wietzki and husband Adam, Ryan Peters and wife Kimberly, Randon Peters and wife Laurie, Alissa Norlund and husband Travis, Kayla Ele, Justin Ele, Tonya Skinner and husband David, Raeth Peters, Reed Peters and wife Tyler; eight great-grandchildren, Sonny Wietzki, Shauna Wietzki, Veronica Lutz, Cole Leach, Carley Peters, Ryland Peters, Laney Peters, and Gavin Peters.
Funeral services were Thursday, April 10, 2008, 11 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.
Memorials were to be given in his name to Community Home Health and Hospice.

Zane Jesse Pace
Zane Jesse Pace, infant son of Jesse and Kristina (Budke) Pace was born prematurely on March 7, 2008 at Community Hospital. He went to be with his Savior the same day.
Preceding him in death were his great-grandparents, Ann Pace and Lois Stewart.
Survivors include his parents, Jesse and Kristina Pace; two sisters, Zoey and Zeah Pace of the home; grandparents, Robert and Joyce Pace of Cambridge and Blaine and Ann Budke of McCook; great-grandparents, Cecil Pace of Kearney, Wayne Stewart of McCook and Ed and Betty Budke of San Diego, CA; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Memorials were to be given in his name.
