Louise Thurber
Louise Thurber, 90, the second daughter of Walter and Belva (Hill) Ehlers was born April 29, 1922, at Gurley, Neb., in Cheyenne County. She died Monday at the Rose Brook Care Center in Edgar.
Louise came to Thayer County from Cheyenne County as a small child lived there until 1947. Louise was united in marriage to Claude W. Thurber on Dec. 28, 1948, and the couple lived in the Edgar community the remainder of their lives.
Louise was a member of the Church of the Plains, Edgar, Presbyterian Woman's Club, served as worthy matron of the Edgar Chapter Order of Eastern Star and later she became a member of the Nelson Chapter Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include a daughter in-law, Glenna Ehlers, Lincoln, Neb.; step-son, Marvin Thurber, Lincoln, Neb.; brothers Cecil Ehlers, Nevada, Wesley Ehlers, Arizona, sister, Mrs. Elden Johnson (Opal), Florida; sisters-in-law, Hope Ehlers, Webber, Joann Ehlers, Hebron, and Louise Ehlers, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Claude Thurber; a son, Lynn Ehlers; step-grandson, Tom Thurber; brothers, Norman, Edward, Eugene, Orrin and Melvin; and sisters, Thelma Wight and Vivian Schleif.
Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Plains. Pastor Don Canady will officiate. Burial will be in the Edgar cemetery. Williams Funeral Home of Edgar, is in charge of the arrangements.
Robert Gleason
A former Guide Rock resident, Robert Gleason, 71, died Friday at Countryside Homes in Madisen. His funeral will be at 10:30 this morning (Thursday) at St. John's Lutheran Church north of Columbus. Burial with military honors will be in the parish cemetery.
He was born April 21, 1941 in Guide Rock to Milton and Cleta (Sabin) Gleason. He graduated from Guide Rock High School and entered the United States Navy on Feb. 25, 1959. He was honorably discharged on March 23, 1962 but was active in the reserves until Feb. 24, 1965.
He was united in marriage in 1965 to Connie Biltoft at Oak, Neb. Bob attended Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Neb., for two years. For more than 25 years he was a sales representative for Metz Baking Company. Prior to his retirement, bob was a foreman at the Leprino Foods cheese plant in Dodge, Neb.
Survivors include his son, Rodney of Omaha, a daughter Kim Kudrna of Leigh; two granddaughters; and a brother, Jack Gleason of Red Bluff, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Lavaile and Lyle.
Thomas Harkins
Thomas D. Harkins joined the family of Iva and Bill Harkins and brother Bob, on June 16, 1926, weighing in at 12 lbs. His mother thus nicknamed him as the "Caboose."
He was raised in the small town of Superior, which did not have a kindergarten at the time. Because of this, his mother decided to enroll him in the first grade at age five. Through all his school years, his mother threatened to hold him back, but his teachers said, "Why? That will only give him more time to play!"
Tom graduated high school during World War II and in 1943, attended the University of Nebraska until he was old enough to enlist in the Navy Air Corps. Because there weren't any openings in preflight, the Navy sent him to college in the V-12a program. In 1946, after serving the Navy, he made the choice to move to Oregon and began classes at the University of Oregon. From that point until his death, he was a proud Northwesterner. Although he remained loyal to his beloved Cornhuskers until the end of his days, he also developed a huge affection to the Seahawks.
Tom worked with the purchasing department at Caterpillar in Dallas, Ore., for many years and traveled all over the country as well as Europe in that capacity. He worked in purchasing for Halton Equipment.
Frustrated with his first marriage having ended in a divorce, he later met and married
the love of his life, Barbara Jamieson. They were blessed with 25 years of marriage, until she preceded him in death in 2011.
Sadly, that same year, Tom also lost his daughter, Mary Katherine, who resided in Salem, Ore.
Family survivors include Karen and Bob Chandler, of Lebanon, Ore., and Carol Swanson of Bothell, Wash. Tom also leaves his grandchildren; Lauren Chandler and great-grandson, Jack of Redmond, Ore.; Chad and Brady Swanson of Bothell, Wash.; and Bobby and Britny Chandler of Lebanon, Ore.
Tom lost his battle with lung and brain cancer Jan. 16, 2013. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m., Feb 9. at Huston-Jost Funeral Home located in Lebanon, Ore.
Phyllis Beach
Phyllis Grayce Beach, 89, died Jan. 15, at the St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born Aug. 31, 1923, in Nelson. The daughter of Kile and Lena Statz Conner. A resident of Pierceville, she had been a farmer and rancher.
She was a member of the Federated Church in Pierceville, Kan. She was also past president of the CowBelles, and a sewing leader for the Go-Getters 4-H club, both of Pierceville.
On Aug. 12, 1944, she married
Gerald E. Beach in Kansas City. He died March 29, 1966, in Garden City.
Survivors include, one daughter, Mrs. Jim Latham (Sue) of Arlington, Texas; a sister, Ramona Wulf, of Guide Rock; one grandson, Garet Beach, of Pierceville; four granddaughters, Mrs. Robert Steele (Gera), Manhattan, Mrs. Travis Wheeler (Minde), Charleston, S.C., Mrs. Jason Hopkins (Kendra), Atlanta, Ga., and Brecke Latham, of Washington, D.C.; six great-grandchildren, Hope and Britlyn Beach, Pierceville, Beach Gary Dale Steele, Manhattan, Caroline and Mackenzie Wheeler, Charleston, S.C., and soon to be baby Hopkins.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, a son, Gary Beach; a brother, Bud Conner; and two sisters, Reta Auble and Vivian Taylor.
He funeral was held Jan. 19, at the Pierceville Federated Church. The Price and Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, was in charge of arrangements.
Shirley Bohling
Shirley R. Bohling, 71, the daughter of Roy D. and Nellie Mae (Thorpe) Zeigler, was born Sept. 30, 1941, at Edgar. She died Tuesday at the Rose Brook Care Center in Edgar.
She requested there be no services at this time. Williams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Timothy Blanchard
Timothy William Blanchard, 55, the son of Arden and Wyona (Johnson) Blanchard, was born Nov. 7, 1957, at Council Bluffs, Iowa. He died Saturday, at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings.
Tim's family moved to Kansas in 1960, there he attended school at Enterprise and later attended school at Chapman, The family then moved to Solomon where Tim attended Southeast of Saline as well as Solomon High School.
Tim found employment with the Solomon Corporation and ServiceMaster of Salina. He worked for the elevator at Edgar for six years.
Tim is survived by his father, Arden, of Angus; his mother, Wyona, of Solomon; daughters, Ashley Blanchard of Salina, Penny Blanchard of Topeka, and Leslie Blanchard of Kansas City; sons, Jeremy Blanchard of Ottawa, and Matt Blanchard; three grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Charlie Furness (Carrie) of Solomon, Sheila of Salina, Mrs. Cecil Riffel (Cynthia) of Navore, Kan.; Rick of Iola, Randy of Grandbery, Texas, and Jeff of Solomon.
His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Edgar. Pastor David King will be officiating. Private family burial will take place at a later date.
Emilie Morgan

David Beckmann
David Arnold Beckmann was born Feb. 1, 1953, to Arnold and Esther (Kirchhoff) Beckmann. He was raised on the family's farm north of Gaylord. He attended school at Gaylord until his freshman year when the Gaylord High School closed. He continued his education and graduated from Smith Center High School in 1971.
David married
Cindy Lea Knight and together were blessed with three daughters, Cherish, Charity and Christina. He was especially proud of his girls and never missed any academic, musical or sporting events.
David began work at an early age by helping on the family farm with field work and tending to the livestock. Although David enjoyed the outdoors he took a job at Mini Max his junior year working part-time. After graduation, he continued his employment there for the next 25 years until the business closed. David then returned to farming, helping his brother-in-law, Max Dannenberg, until his health began to fail forcing him into early retirement in 2006.
David enjoyed time with family, friends and his faithful animal companions. He liked to hunt, fish, golf, go to the lake, play games, especially cards, and spent many hours teaching these skills to his children and grandchildren. When possible he traveled to attend his grandchildren's school events and outside activities.
He was proceeded in death by his parents; a brother, Paul Beckmann; and a sister, Laura Ann Corcoran.
Survivors include his wife, Cindy; daughters, Mrs. Todd Reeves (Cherish), Charity Beckmann and Mrs. Rhett Hickert (Christina); grandchildren, Peyton, Santana, Anton, McKenna, Keaton, Teagon, Brianna, Dayton and Tianna Reeves, David Rogers, Isabella Beckmann, Leo and Gavin Hickert; sisters Helen Dannenberg and Rebecca Powell; and a brother, Dennis Beckmann.
His funeral was held Wednesday at the St. John Lutheran Church, Athol, with Pastor Dave Kramer officiating. Simmons-Rentschler Funeral Home, Smith Center, was in charge of arrangements.
Dolores Campbell
Dolores Jean Campbell, 86, the daughter of Dee and Lillian Barker, was born July 21, 1926, at Detroit, Mich. She died Friday at Superior. During her life she touched many lives with her friendship, mentoring and counseling and with her love.
Dolores met Colis Campbell at Harding College in Searcy, Ark. They were married
at the college on June 7, 1945. They served eight years in Japan as missionaries, two years in Columbia, Mo., 17 years at York College, York, Nebraska and with minister and teaching jobs in Robstown, Texas; Acuff, Texas; Ramona, Okla., and Kearney. They retired to Kimberling City, Mo., and later moved back to Nebraska to be near family.
While at York College, Dolores worked in the registrar's office and then served as dean of women. She was also an active member of the York Business and Professional Women's Club.
Dolores will be remembered for her warm smile, clever and outgoing personality, her hospitality, for being a loving and fun mother and grandmother, and as a strong and faithful Christian.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Ruth New; son-in-law, Kenneth Melott; and great-grandson, Alexander Colis Edwards.
Survivors include her husband, Colis of Superior; daughters, Mrs. Jim Knowles (Betty Lou) of Denton, Texas, and Mrs. Dennis Edward (Pattie Sue) of Kearney; grandchildren, Lonnie Kenneth Melott, Lucas Campbell Meltott, James Terrell Knowles Jr., John Thomas Knowles, Clinton Lee Edwards, Clayton Colis Edwards, Abigail Kendall Edwards, Jake Thomas Edwards and McKinney David Edwards; great-grandchildren, Campbell Kenneth and Caiden Davis Melott, Jack Thomas and James Parker Knowles, Eve Caroline and Jack Dennis Edwards. Samantha Leigh Edwards, and Dominique Ray Edwards.
Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at the Church of Christ, 302 E 25th Street, Kearney. Robert Lawrence will officiate. Burial will take place at a later date. A register book was available for signing on Wednesday at the Williams Funeral Home, Superior.
Lorna McMillan
Lorna Mae McMillan was born July 6, 1938, on a farm near Burr Oak, to Ivan and Helen (Davis) McMillan. Lorna died Jan. 25 at her home in Beloit.
Although blind and handicapped at birth, she attended the School for the Blind in Kansas City. She worked many years in Topeka for the State Facility for the Blind. Lorna was a conscientious and devoted worker. She amazed everyone with her clear memory of events and dates. She was an avid fan of Kansas University and the Kansas City Royals, listening to their games on her companion, her radio.
In May of 2000, Lorna moved to Beloit, and began working for OCCK, Inc. Lorna selected Beloit, not only for the services provided but also to be closer to her sister, Audrey. She made her home with OCCK and worked there as long as her health permitted. Lorna enjoyed bowling, board games, music, and traveling with her sister to see her brother, Eldon, and family in Payette, Idaho. She was also active in the Burr Oak Christian Church and a Christian Church in Topeka when her health permitted.
Lorna is preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Merle McMillan; and a sister, Audrey Hamilton.
She is survived by her brother. Eldon McMillan, Payette, Idaho; a brotherin-law, Donald Hamilton, Mankato; and many relatives.
Her funeral was held Tuesday at Melby Mortuary Chapel, Mankato, with Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Casketbearers were Carl Figgins, Rick Warneking, Don Bird, Lynn Scarrow, Shawn Newell and Lloyd Johnson. Interment was in the Burr Oak cemetery.
Margaret Hattan
Margaret Hattan died Jan. 23, 2013, at Cloud County Health Center, Concordia. She was born near Deweese, Neb., to James and Clara (Barta) Mazour on Dec. 30, 1927. After graduating from Nelson High School in May 1945, she worked at the office of the county treasurer until her marriage to Hubert "Hugh" Hattan on June 7, 1949, in Deweese. She worked for Continental Oil Company in Lincoln, Neb., while Hugh was in dental school. In July 1952, they moved to Concordia where he started his dental practice with Dr. C.J. Whitney. Through the years, she was involved with Jaycee Jaynes (president), Cub Scouts, Camp Fire Girls (council president, plus leader and other board positions). She belonged to the Catholic Daughters of the Americas for almost 50 years and served as regent and other offices. As a longtime member of St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary and the CCHC Auxiliary, she served as president and on other committees. She was a member of the altar society and two bridge clubs.
Survivors include daughters, Susan and husband, Steve Kittrell, Washington, D.C., Linda and husband, Ron Logan, Olathe; sons, Dr. Greg Hattan and wife, Janice, Concordia, Richard Hattan and wife, Patti, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Dr. Mike Hattan and wife, Carla, Hays; grandchildren, Justin and Jennifer Hattan, Brett and Brandon Logan, Jessica (Hattan) Christensen and Paul Hattan, Holly and Ross Hattan; great-grandchildren, Alexander and Benjamin Christensen and Colin Logan, and two sisters, Kathryn Murtaugh and Cecilia Mazour, both of Lincoln, Neb.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hugh, on Feb. 25, 2009, and infant sister, Mary.
Visitation was held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with an altar society Rosary at 5 p.m. and vigil services at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at Chaput Buoy Funeral Home. The Mass of Christian Burial was at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with The Rev. Barry Brinkman, and burial followed the services in St. Concordia cemetery.

Joyce Peters
Hastings resident, Joyce P. Peters, 84, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at The Kensington, Hastings, Neb.
A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at Butler Volland Chapel, Hastings with The Rev. Steven Peeler officiating. Visitation was one hour before the service at the funeral home. Burial was in the Nelson cemetery, Nelson, Neb. Memorials may be given to Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd or to the family. Joyce was born July 24, 1928, near Angus, Neb., to Ray and Francis Worrell. She married
Ray E. Peters on Jan. 1, 1943. After raising five children on a farm near Angus, they moved to Hastings in 1969. Joyce resided in the same house on Fifth Street from 1969 to September 2012. She worked as a server for Lochland Country Club, as a cook for the Adams Central School District, at Goodwill Industries and Hospice Home Health Care. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, Party Line on KHAS Radio and her two bischon dogs, Marshmallow and Bella. The family expresses appreciation for the care given by Mary Lanning Hospice and Kensington Assisted Living Center.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray; and daughter, Vicky Kriger.
Survivors include sons and spouses, Gary Peters, Omaha; Darrell Peters, Grand Island; Dale and Shirley Peters, Hastings; Kevin and Sandi Peters, Lincoln, Neb.; son-in-law, John Kriger, Kearney; grandchildren, Barry Peters, Mike Peters, Jason Kriger, Kim Riggert, Kerri Otto, Kayce Armbrust, Darrick Peters and Jordan Peters; and 12 great-grandchildren.
