Rose A.C. Frahm
January 10, 1916 - May 14, 2012
Rose Athene Clara Frahm (96) died at her home in rural Ceresco, NE on May 14, 2012.
She was born on January 10, 1916 to Otto and Mable (Clyde) Quass on a homestead near Lambert, MT. The doctor´s sleigh upset during a 56 degree below zero blizzard but the doctor was able to walk the distance to the cabin. Rose was too small to weigh and was wrapped in a blanket and kept warm on the open door of the kitchen stove oven. She was the second of six daughters born to this family. Because of a period of drought, the family returned to Paddock near O´Neill, Nebraska via covered wagon. The trip took three months and they were able to get meals in exchange for work at ranches along the way.
The family settled in Saunders County where Otto took up farming in the Ashland area. Rose attended school at Dist. 5, Memphis School, and Ashland High School where Rose graduated as Valedictorian of the class of 1934. She was united in marriage to LeRoy Frahm of Ithaca on September 11, 1935, in the Memphis Methodist Church. This was during the depths of the Great Depression and the only attendees were the parents and the two witnesses. The wedding reception with her five sisters and the groom's family was a home cooked fried chicken dinner at her parent´s home near Memphis. This marriage lasted seventy years and their love and devotion to one another was a blessing to everyone who knew them.
Rose and LeRoy lived with his parents for nine months until a farm south of Ithaca became available. The drought destroyed the crops and the knee-high corn was cut for silage to feed their cattle. The chickens ate the grasshoppers and the family ate the chickens. In 1950, they moved to a dairy farm near Neosho, MO but moved back to Lincoln about six months later where LeRoy worked for the Burlington Railroad. In 1953, they purchased a farm near Ceresco, NE where they lived for nearly sixty years.
Rose was active in the United Methodist Church as a Sunday School teacher, choir member and secretary of various church organizations. She was active in PTA, YWCA Board and Y-Teens Council in Lincoln. After moving to Saunders County, Rose served as secretary and president of her extension club and County Chairman of the Extension Council. She also served as State Vice-President and State President of the Nebraska Home Economic Association of Organized Agriculture and was chosen Outstanding Homemaker of the Year. With the exception of three years in Lincoln, Rose was a life-long resident of Saunders County.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband LeRoy of 70 years, sisters Nellie Hall, Vera Buster, Doris Quinn, Shirley Williams, Maurine Sandles and grandson, Dr. Derek Shickell. She is survived by her children, Marvin and Sylvia Frahm of Palm City, FL, Drs Charlyn and Fred Shickell of Lincoln, NE, and Roger and Marcia Frahm of Memphis; grandchildren Pamela and David Lauver of Jupiter, FL; Eric Frahm of Jupiter, FL; Michael and Sara Frahm of Coral Springs, FL; Dana and Criss Butler of Omaha; Gwen Shickell, West Des Moines, IA, Jeremy Frahm of Omaha; Matthew S.
