Leland L. Buehler
09/03/1927 - Sunday, April 09, 2006

Leland Buehler, 78, of rural Gering died Sunday morning at Regional West Medical Center. After several months of declining health, he died of complications from a stroke. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Christ the King Catholic Church in Gering at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 with the Father Gerald Harr officiating. A vigil service will be held Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Visitations will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel. Interment will be at West Lawn cemetery.
Leland was born September 3, 1927 to Carl and Leona (Hawbaker) Buehler in the house in Gering Valley in which he lived 60 years of his life including the last 40. He was educated in the Gering school system serving as president of his 1945 graduating class. He married Josephine Stoll on June 3, 1950 and they farmed in Gering Valley all their lives.
Leland was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Elks Lodge. His activities and interests included fishing, golf, bowling, horseshoe pitching, playing cards, spectator sports and playing croquet from his wheelchair. He served as director on the board of Roosevelt Public Power District and as a 4-H and FFA leader and grade school coach.
Leland is survived by his wife of 55 years, Josephine; two sisters: Lorine Zitterkopf of Northfield Villa in Gering and Kathleen (Lloyd) Durfee of Mitchell; three sons and two daughters: Kent (Linda) Buehler of Gering, Neil (Julie) Buehler of Belmont, Michigan, Wynne (Terri) Buehler of Gering, Ann Rodgers of Imperial Beach, California, and Cathy (Jason) Margheim of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; 17 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Wallace.
Memorials in Leland's name may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church or to a charity of your choice.

Goldie Mae Ewing Wilson Bigsby
12/16/1906 - Monday, April 03, 2006

Goldie Mae Ewing Wilson Bigsby, 99, of Gering, died Monday, April 3, 2006 at Northfield Villa Medical Center in Gering. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 7, 2006 at Central Church of Christ in Gering with Pastors Lyle Hinebauch and Howard Roseberry officiating. Interment will be in West Lawn cemetery.
Friends may call at Gering Memorial Chapel between 9:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. Thursday.
Goldie was born December 16, 1906 at Gering to Emerson and Daisy (Scott) Ewing. They moved by horse and buggy when she was three years old to their homestead in Carter Canyon in 1910. She received her elementary education in a one room school house at the top of Carter Hill. She graduated from Gering High School in 1924 while living with relatives in Gering. With a teaching certificate in hand she was ready to face the world. She was hired to teach in a one room school in the fall of 1924 in Banner County where she met her future husband Elmer M. Wilson. They were married in November of 1926. In the spring of 1927 she stopped teaching and moved to his homestead in Yoder, WY. She was the third generation in her family to prove-up on a homestead, as her grandparents had come to Western NE in 1887 and took a homestead in the Roubidoux area.
In 1928 they returned to Banner County where she taught in the Harrisburg grade school for five years. In 1934 she stopped teaching to start a family and was a fulltime mom for 8 years. Elmer was an auto mechanic at Bridgeport, Morrill and Colorado Springs, CO. In 1942 during WW II school boards were begging for teachers. Goldie received a temporary teaching certificate, teaching in Western NE and sole provider for her two daughters. She always wanted to thank Hitler for this privilege but he committed suicide before she got the chance. She earned college credits at night, Saturdays and in summers. She graduated cum laude from Chadron State College in 1958. She taught for 36 years, the last 14 years in Lincoln Grade School in Gering and previously in the rural schools of Gering Valley, Carter Canyon, Cedar Valley and Dome Rock.
Goldie inherited the home ranch when her mother died in 1965, and combined ranching with teaching until 1972 when she retired from teaching. Elmer died in September of 1974 and she married Rupert Bigsby in March of 1976. He died in July of 1996.
Goldie became a member of the First Christian Church, later becoming the Central Church of Christ, while she was in high school, was baptized in the Christian Church in Scottsbluff as the church in Gering did not have a baptistry. She taught the U & I Sunday School Class for 30 years, played the piano for church and Sunday-School and sang in the choir. She was honored by being elected Honorary Vice-President of the Oregon Trail Days in 1985 and Vice President of the Half Century Club in 1969. A member of the Pioneer Birthday Club, Carter Canyon Project Club, Scottsbluff Area Retired Teachers, Banner County and North Platte Valley Museums, and was on the Twin City Credit Union Board for 13 years. She was a charter member of the Pythian Sisters Temple of Banner County and served as its first “Most Excellent Chief”.
Goldie’s hobbies were writing, especially poetry, needle work, photography, scrap-booking. She loved to memorize and entertain others with poetry. Goldie had a magnetic personality, she enjoyed people and making many friends over the years.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law: Mary Jo and LeRoy Schaneman of Gering and Martha Jean and James O’Connor of Bakersfield, CA; sister: Hazel Dutton, seven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and two great -great grandchildren; 3 nieces and 4 nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: Marvin and Myron Ewing and her two husbands, Elmer Wilson and Rupert Bigsby.
Memorials have been established to the Central Church of Christ or to Summit Bible College.

Jerry LaVerne Wegelin
08/29/1936 - Tuesday, March 28, 2006

Jerry Wegelin 69, of 1730 R Street, Gering, went to be with His Lord, Tuesday, March 28, 2006 after a short battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 31, 2006 at the Emmanuel Congregational Church with Pastor John Adams, Pastor Brad Kihlthau and Pastor Ed Hunzeker officiating. Interment will be at West Lawn cemetery following the service.
Visitation will be Thursday at Gering Memorial Chapel from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There will be a time of sharing and remembering for friends and family Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at the chapel.
Jerry was born to Jake and Millie (Propp) Wegelin August 29, 1936. His parents farmed around the area before settling in Gering Valley. He graduated from Gering High School in 1955 and married his high school sweetheart, Wilma Neeley, June 26, 1955. He started farming with his father and then later with his sons. Jerry worked in the Security Department at Regional West Medical Center for the last 11 years. He saw his position as a ministry to the needs of those he came into contact with.
He was very active in the Gering Jaycees and in the 4-H livestock program with his children. He served as a trustee and deacon of the church for many years. He was also a member of the Rolling Oldies Car Club and participated in many events with his 1929 Model A Ford Sedan. He enjoyed hunting, bowling, and working on his Model A. When he wasn’t working at the hospital, he was always outside grooming his yard and the farm yards.
Survivors include his daughter Jeri Lynn Stoltenberg of Gering and her sons Austin, Zachary and his fiancé Alicia Vierthaler of Lawernce, KS; sons Richard Wegelin of Bridgeport and his daughters Camilla and Cassandra Wegelin, and Monte Wegelin of Broomfield, CO.; sisters Renee’ (Carl) Anderson of Oxnard, CA and Charlene Eskam of Scottsbluff; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Lois Neeley, Dale and Alta Jo Williamson of Scottsbluff, Bob and Elaine Neeley of Alliance and Bill and Ruby Neeley of San Jose, CA. and nine nieces and seven nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1993, his parents, his son-in-law Fred Stoltenberg and brother-in-law Marvin Eskam.
Memorials have been established to the Prairie Haven Hospice, Cancer Treatment Center or to donor's choice.

Kenneth Helser
05/22/1940 - Sunday, March 19, 2006

Kenneth Helser, 65 of Gering, Nebraska died Sunday, March 19, 2006 at Regional West Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel with The Very Reverend Gary Young officiating. At his request, cremation was at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory.
Ken was born on May 22, 1940 at Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Thomas and Thelma ( Robbins) Helser. He attended school and graduated from the Sunflower School District. He worked at Lockwood’s for numerous years. Later working at NTC for 28 years, performing various duties. In 1979, he became safety director, where he received numerous recognition awards for their safety program. He retired in 2004.
He was a member of the St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Gering. He was an avid Horseshoe pitcher and he really enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow pitchers. Whenever there was a friend or stranger in need of help, Ken was right there to lend a hand.
He married Janice Pepper on December 30, 1970 in Castle Rock, Colorado.
Survivors include his two children Kent Helser (Andy Barten) of Ft. Worth, Texas and Deidre Helser of Willingboro, New Jersey; grandchildren Diane of Minatare, Kristen of Phoenix and Amanda of Chadron; six great grandchildren; brothers and sisters Larry ( Arla) Helser of Seattle, WA, Howard (Pat) Helser of Seattle, WA, Walt (Donna) Helser of Mitchell, Jim (Rose) Helser of Abilene, Texas, Dorothy (Jack) Henderson of Hemingford and Jeanette Brock of Castle Rock, Colo. Additional survivors include brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Margaret Pepper of Gering, Sandra “Happy” Dutton of Melbeta, Patty Williams of Georgia, Norma Christensen of California and Jack Pepper of Colorado and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Jan, sister Mary Craighead, and infant grandson Trenton.
Memorials may be given to the Gering Volunteer Rescue Unit or donor's choice.

Emma Feagler
02/04/1916 - Tuesday, March 14, 2006

Emma Derr Feagler, 90 of Gering, Nebraska died Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at her home.
Her funeral service will be held Saturday, March 18, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel with Pastor Howard Roseberry officiating. Interment will be at West Lawn cemetery in Gering.
Visitation will be Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Gering Memorial Chapel.
Emma was born on February 4, 1916 in Morrill, Nebraska to Johannes and Elizabeth C. (Maul) Derr. She attended school in Morrill. She was united in marriage to Peter Feagler on October 4, 1936 in Gering, Nebraska.
Survivors include her four sons: Norman (Olivia) Feagler of Yoder, Wy., Michael Feagler of Hudson, Colo., Terry Feagler of Gering and Kelly Feagler of Denver, Colo.; one daughter: Virginia (Miles) Flick of Denver, Colo.; grandchildren: Scott Feagler of Torrington, Wy., Toni Webber of Cheyenne, Wy., Michael Feagler of Phoeniz, AZ, and Charles Flick of Denver, Colo.; and nine great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Pete Feagler, brothers Adolf, Harry, Rueben, John and Edward and one granddaughter Shelly Marie Feagler.

Josephine "Josie" L. Soto
12/08/1923 - Sunday, February 12, 2006

Josephine “Josie” L. Soto, 82, of Gering, joined her husband and son on Sunday, February 12, 2006, at Beverly Health Care Center in Scottsbluff.
A Funeral Mass will be Thursday, February 16, 2006, at 10:00 a.m., at Christ the King Catholic Church in Gering with Father Gerald Harr officiating. Inurnment will follow at West Lawn cemetery. Cremation was at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory. A rosary will be Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel.
Josie was born on December 8, 1923, to Salvador and Victoria Lovato in Belen, New Mexico. She moved with her parents to the Goshen County Community in her youth and attended school in this county. She was united in marriage to Ignacio Soto on July 29, 1941, in Torrington, Wyoming. They made their first home in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where her husband worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. It was during this timeframe when her husband was drafted to the Armed Forces in World War II. She moved to Torrington, Wyoming during this time. After the war she lived in Sunrise and Hartville, Wyoming with her husband and five children. Josie moved to the Scottsbluff and Gering area in the fall of 1972 and was joined by her husband when he retired in 1976 from the CF&I; Mine in Sunrise, Wyoming.
Josie loved to make quilts and made a quilt for each of her children. She loved to play bingo and she enjoyed being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors are children, Larry and Diane Soto of Gering, Esther and Daniel Romero of Sheridan, Wyoming, Victor and Theresa Soto of Lafayette, CO and Sophia and Joe Beck of Laramie, Wyoming; her 14 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Bobby Soto; sisters, Magie Padilla, Connie Torres, Emma Ramerez, Willa Servantez, Rosie Reyes; and brother, Daniel Lovato.

James Hartford Blythe
09/09/1923 - Tuesday, May 02, 2006

James Hartford Blythe, 82, of Gering, went to be with his Lord Tuesday, May 2, 2006. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, May 6, at Fairview cemetery in Scottsbluff with Pastor Garry Schick officiating. The Nebraska National Guard will give military Honors.
A memorial has been established to Prairie Haven Hospice. Friends may call at Gering Memorial Chapel Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Jim was born Sept. 9, 1923, in Kansas City, Kan. to James Albert and Fanny (Freeman) Blythe. He moved to Casper, Wyo., where he attended Natrona County High School and joined ROTC. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor he joined the Wyoming National Guard and was trained as a medical technician at Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver. He enlisted in the Army Nov. 13, 1940, and served in the Philippines during WW II and was honorably discharged Jan. 14, 1946.
In 2004, at the age of 80, he was invited to graduate with the Natrona County High School Class of 2004. He worked in furniture sales for several area furniture stores. Throughout his life he was a beloved friend and neighbor.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Ken and Cheryl Seals of Colorado Springs, Colo., grandsons, Brian Kip Reitz and his wife Tonya of Columbus, Ga., Christopher Brett Reitz of Greeley, Colo. and Joshua James Blythe of Gering; three great-grandchildren and sister, Rosanna Dean of McClouth, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his wife of forty years, Irene Grasmick Blythe; daughter Tonya Lynn Blythe; grandson, Scotty Alan Reitz and siblings, Kenneth and Margaret.

Katherina (Schlegel) McMillen
08/08/1915 - Friday, May 19, 2006

Katherina (Schlegel) McMillen, age 90, of Gering, died Friday, May 19, 2006, at Northfield Villa Medical Center in Gering.
A funeral service will be held 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at Gering Memorial Chapel with Pastor Linda Battello officiating. Interment will be in the West Lawn cemetery in Gering. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Monday from 9:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M.
Katherina was born August 8, 1915, at Bayard to George and Katie (Zitterkopf) Schlegel. She grew up and received her education in Morrill County. She was united in marriage to Thurman F. “Bady” McMillen July 14, 1945, in Minatare. The couple lived in Bayard until they moved to Gering in 1953, and resided there until both their deaths. Katherina worked a the Swifts Meat Packing Company for 5 years and for 13 years at the Panhandle Coop Food Store. She retired in 1969.
She was a member of the Gering First United Methodist Church and the Methodist Women’s Circle.
Survivors include her son, Richard A. McMillen of Geneva; sister, Rose Webber of Scottsbluff; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thurman; three sisters; and one brother.
A memorial has been established to Gering First United Methodist Church.
