Martha I. Veal
Martha Irene "Martye" Veal, 86, of North Platte died Aug. 19, 2001, at Linden Court in North Platte.

She was born April 28, 1915, at North Platte to George Sam and Ellen Matilda Bjorklund Pappas. She grew up in Chappell and graduated from Deuel County High School in 1933.

On Nov. 22, 1945, she married Arnold D. "Bill" Veal in Kansas.

They made their home in North Platte, where she worked for Woolworths for many years. In 1961, she went to work for the North Platte Public Library and retired in 1977.

Mrs. Veal was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary 2839.

Survivors include a sister, Eleanor Gastineau, and a brother, Fred (Doris) Pappas, both of North Platte; five nephews, Fred Jr., Tom, Jim and Bob Pappas and Tim Gastineau; and a friend, Sam Palmer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a sister, Esther Pappas.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the North Platte Cemetery with the Rev. Steven Jergensen of the First Christian Church officiating.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Odean Colonial Chapel.

Helen I. Yantzie
BROKEN BOW - Helen I. Yantzie, 80, of Broken Bow died Aug. 19, 2001, at Sandhills Manor in Broken Bow.

She was born Dec. 21, 1920, in Broken Bow to Roy and Pauline Shirkey Cox. Her father died when she was six weeks old and she was raised in the home of her grandparents, Francis and Bessie Shirkey. Later she lived with her aunt and uncle, Paul and Kathryn Myers. She accepted Christ as a young woman and was baptized in the Mennonite Church north of Broken Bow. In recent years, she attended the Church of God in Broken Bow.

On Nov. 25, 1940, she married Homer Yantzie in Davenport, Iowa. The couple had six children, who Mrs. Yantzie considered to be the greatest joys in her life. The Yantzie family spent many years farming around the Broken Bow area until 1967, when they purchased a local western-wear store that became Slim's Western Wear. After their retirement they spent several years traveling.

She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Jean (Allen) Eggleston and Linda (Ron) Kratzer, all of Broken Bow, and Judy (Mike) Diefenbaugh of Merna; two sons, Larry (Gerry) of Broken Bow and Bob (Linda) of Taylor; a sister, Bessie Gremm of Acampa, Calif.; three half-sisters, Katie Safranek of Merna, Vanetta Andersen of Broken Bow and Dona Burnsworth of Barnesville, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mildred; her parents; a stepsister, Joy Kolbo; and two stepbrothers, Ronald and Harry Meyers.

Memorials are suggested to the Custer County Hospice.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Evangelical Free Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Walt Collins officiating. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Levi S. Anderson Jr.
Levi Swan Anderson, 77, of North Platte died Aug. 20, 2001, at Linden Court in North Platte.

He was born March 24, 1924, to Levi S. and Dasie Ammon Anderson at O'Fallons. He attended school at North Platte.

On Sept. 14, 1946, he married Joan Lamplaugh at North Platte.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

Following his discharge he returned to North Platte, where he was involved with his family in a salvage yard and farming and ranching.

In 1955, he started Anderson Sand and Gravel with his brother, with plants at Paxton, Sutherland and Scottsbluff. He also owned and operated Andy's Pub in North Platte, where he started the military picture display.

Mr. Anderson was a member of First Christian Church and a former member of the P. R. Halligan Post 163 of the American Legion, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 985, the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 551 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2839.

Surviving him are his wife of North Platte; two daughters, Linda (Eddie) Johnston of North Platte and Sherry (Richard) Keuter of Centerville, Ohio; two sons, Levi (Joyce) of North Platte and Rick (Susan) of Paxton; a brother, Glenn (Vickie) Anderson of Paxton; 10 grandchildren, Devin and Heidi Weitzel, Justy Lindell, Erik, Erin, Seth, Riley and Lucas Anderson and Rick and Ryan Keuter; and three great-grandchildren, Simone and Moriah Lindell and Joseph Anderson.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Adams & Swanson Chapel with Don Saathoff officiating. Inurnment will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Those wishing to sign the register book may do so from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today and Thursday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.

Thomas 'Bus' Christensen
MERNA - Thomas "Bus" Christensen, 83, of Merna died Aug. 18, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

He was born July 23, 1918, to Thomas and Anna Jensen Christensen in the Cliff Table area of Custer County. He attended rural schools and graduated from Arnold High School in 1936. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He spent his whole life farming and ranching in the Cliff Table area. He enjoyed his livestock and his spare time was spent restoring old tractors.

Mr. Christensen is survived by his wife, Olive; two daughters, Margaret (Rusty) Warner and Marguerite (Craig) Lind, all of Lincoln; a sister, Eleanor Cornish of Wood River; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Carl.

Memorials are suggested to the People City Mission in Lincoln, the Merna Rescue Unit or the Evangelical Free Church in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Evangelical Free Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Bob Winn officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Table Cemetery west of Merna.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Maude E. Flock
COZAD - Maude Flock, 83, of Cozad died Aug. 20, 2001, at the Cozad hospital.

She was born May 19, 1918, at White to Elmer and Martha Hoschouer Davis. She grew up in the rural Maywood area and attended Maywood schools.

On March 4, 1940, she married Linnaeus Flock at Ogallala. They resided at Omaha and Buffalo, N.Y., before returning to Maywood.

They made their home on farmsites at Maywood until moving to Cozad three years ago.

She was a member of the Maywood Christian Church.

Mrs. Flock is survived by her husband; four daughters, Jean Ann (David) Boland of Kaslo, British Columbia, Linda (Rod) Deprez and Patricia Durner, all of Cozad, and Debra (Jim) Phillips of Littleton, Colo.; two sons, Russell (Elizabeth) of Maywood and Ronald of Cozad; three sisters, Evelyn Brown and Edna (Virgil) Towne, all of Curtis, and Thelma (Bob) Fenton of Maywood; a brother, Roy (Marion) Davis of Cozad; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandsons; and a special friend, Hazel Brecks of Cozad.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Gary; two sisters, Anna and Mabel; and two brothers, Willis and Leslie.

Memorials are suggested to the Maywood Christian Church.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Cozad Christian Church with Jim Henry officiating. Burial will be in the Maywood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.

Rachelle F. Goebel
OGALLALA - Rachelle F. Goebel, 88, of Ogallala died Aug. 20, 2001, at Ogallala Community Hospital.

She was born Sept. 10, 1912, at Lincoln, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Wentz Fischer. She grew up and attended schools in Lincoln.

On July 18, 1935, she married Paul Albert Goebel in Lincoln. They moved to Ogallala in 1942.

She was employed by Goodall Electric and Peacock Cleaners, and she worked as a waitress at Turco's Restaurant, Hokes Cafe and the Hilltop Inn. She was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She had also been a Pink Lady volunteer at the hospital.

Mrs. Goebel is survived by a daughter, Sandra (Tom) Frame of Julesburg, Colo.; four sons, Paul of Omaha, Joe (Joyce) of Davenport, Iowa, David Sr. (Carol) of Ogallala and Michael (Karen) of Dallas; two sisters, Freida Flack and Lela Rebendorf, both of Lincoln, a brother, John H. Fischer of Lincoln; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-granddchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1972; two sisters; and four brothers.

A memorial has been established.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Gubser Funeral Chapel in Ogallala.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke's Catholic Church with the Rev. John Schlaf as celebrant.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of rosary today at the funeral home in Ogallala.

Kenneth E. Toellner Sr.
SUTHERLAND - Kenneth E. Toellner, 86, of Sutherland died Aug. 19, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He was born June 20, 1915, to Henry and Mattie Mae Dorman Toellner at Thurman, Iowa. He grew up in Nebraska City and Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 508th Paratroopers.

He married Mary Elizabeth MacKrell of Philadelphia June 6, 1946, in Omaha. He worked for the Cudahay Packing Plant from 1946 until 1965 and then worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha as a carman from 1965 to 1970. He then worked for the railroad as an oiler from 1970 until his retirement in 1977. He and his wife moved to North Platte in 1970, and in 1973 they moved to Sutherland. She preceded him in death Jan. 28, 1999.

Survivors include two daughters, Marian L. Cassell of Marietta, Minn., and Patricia E. Lamont of Bellevue; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Jr.; his parents; a sister; and four brothers.

Memorials are suggested to the Callahan Cancer Center.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Adams & Swanson Chapel with the Rev. Bracken J. Sheldon officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and prior to service time Thursday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.

Maxine Alban
COFFEYVILLE, Kan. - Maxine Alban, 81, mother of Patty Watson of North Platte, died Aug. 21, 2001, at Windsor Place in the London Unit at Coffeyville, Kan.

She was born Aug. 23, 1919, in Coffeyville to Frank Ray and Mary Elizabeth McKellips Taylor. She graduated from Field Kindley Memorial High School and Coffeyville Community Junior College.

In October 1943, she married Lee Edward Alban. He preceded her in death iin 1965.

In the late 1960's, she began employment at Funk Manufacturing as a production control secretary, retiring in the early 1980s.

However, she had been a homemaker most of her life.

Mrs. Alban was a member of the First Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Patty Watson of North Platte, Linda Anhalt of Lenapah, Okla., and Nina Beason of Tribune, Kan.; a son, Tracy of Independence, Kan.; three sisters, Pauline Johnson of Lakeland, Fla., Lorene Norris of Coffeyville and Betty Jennings of Owasso, Okla.; a brother, Clyde "Bud" Taylor of Coffeyville; 15 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials are suggested to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation or the Hospice of Coffeyville.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Assembly of God Church in Coffeyville. Burial will be in the Robbins Cemetery west of Coffeyville.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Ford-Wulf-Bruns Edgewood Chapel in Coffeyville.
