Ruth Kingsbury

Ruth Mary Young, daughter of James Young and Mary Larson Young, was born in Ashland, Wisconsin, on February 14, 1906.

Ruth was married to Cecil Richard Kingsbury in Minneapolis, MN, on July 20, 1923. Following their marriage, Ruth and Cecil lived in Minneapolis, and later in Columbia Heights, MN. Ruth enjoyed a 30 year career working for the Minneapolis branch of the Dayton Company. She retired in 1981.

After retirement, Cecil and Ruth moved to Naples, FL, where they enjoyed life together through their 75th wedding anniversary. Cecil died on August 24, 1998. Following his death, Ruth lived with her children when she wasn’t at her Naples address.

In April of 2003, Ruth moved to The Evergreens Assisted Living, and in December of 2003, she became a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home. Both residences are located in Moorhead, MN.

Ruth died at Eventide on January 19, 2004, at the age of 97.

She is survived by four children, Cecil R. (Babe) Kingsbury Jr., Houston, TX, Jean E. Scott, Buffalo, MN, James E. (Betty) Kingsbury, Orlando, FL, and Willis (LaVerne) Kingsbury, Moorhead, MN. Ruth is also survived by a sister, Marie (Richard) Zegland, Minneapolis, MN; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at the Kelly (Brian) Haugrud home to honor the memory of a beloved matriarch.

Donna F. Jacobson

Donna Fay Strommen, the daughter of Orville J. and Lily Mae (Forde) Strommen, was born Feb. 11, 1927, at Halstad, MN. She grew up and received her education in Halstad and in Fargo, ND, where she graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1945. As a young lady, she worked for Judge P. M. Paulsen at the Cass County (ND) courthouse.

On June 14, 1948, Donna was married to P. David Jacobson, at Olivet Lutheran Church in Fargo. Following their marriage, they made their home on a farm near Perley, MN. David died in 1986.

On July 1, 1990, Donna moved to Fargo to live. She was an avid bowler and was active in Hope Lutheran Church. Music was important to her. She had been a choir director, soloist, and organist, and had been a member of the Hope Lutheran Church Choir for ten years.

Donna Fay Jacobson died on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, at the age of 76. Donna was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and granddaughter, Michele Trandem.

She is survived by a daughter, Debra Jacobson, Perley; a son, Kent (Karen) Jacobson, Glyndon, MN; four brothers, John N. (Valorie) Strommen, Ridgecrest, CA, Richard D. (Ann) Strommen, Albuquerque, NM, Paul E. (Sharon) Strommen, Coon Rapids, MN, and Gordon L. (Pat) Strommen, Fargo; two grandchildren, Tammy (David) Keenan and Heather Trandem; and two great-grandchildren, Kristin and Alyssa Keenan.

Visitation: Tuesday, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Funeral service: Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at 11:00 AM Hope Lutheran Church, north campus Fargo, North Dakota

Burial: Bethania Lutheran cemetery, Perley, MN.

Stephanie Keckhafer

Stephanie A. Keckhafer, 36, Fargo, ND, died Wednesday, January 14, 2004, in her home.

Stephanie Ann Keckhafer was born October 27, 1967, on the Rosebud Indian Reservation, South Dakota. She was adopted by Mary Keckhafer at nine years of age and the two made their home in Fargo, where Stephanie grew up and graduated from Fargo South High School in 1989.

Stephanie was presented the Outstanding Entrepreneur Award in 2002 by the Metro Area Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities for her popcorn business. Stephanie packed a lot of life and activity into her young life. She and Mary traveled extensively throughout the world. Stephanie was an actively involved member of Friendship United Methodist Church, Fargo, where she was loved by all. She made a lasting impression on all who crossed her path and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Stephanie is survived by her mother, Mary, Fargo; her grandmother, Olga Keckhafer, Fergus Falls, MN; and several aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Edwin Keckhafer and one aunt.

Marcil "M.J." Paseka

Marcil (MJ) Paseka, 81, Moorhead, MN, passed from this earth on Wednesday, January 9, 2004 at Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, Fargo, ND.

Marcil was born June 7, 1922, in Moorhead, and raised in West Fargo, ND. He married Lorraine Mallow on December 24, 1942, in Denver, CO, while serving in the US Army. He went overseas in 1944 and was captured by the German Army near St Vith, France, on December 24, 1944, in the Battle of the Bulge. American forces liberated Marcil on March 27, 1945.

He and Lorraine moved to Moorhead, where he established Paseka Plumbing and Heating, which he owned and operated until he retired in 1984. After retirement he worked as a plumbing inspector for the city of Moorhead. Marcil was well known for his work ethic and his honesty, and was well respected and appreciated by the contractors and developers with whom he did business. Marcil was a lifetime member of Albert E. Johnson VFW Post 1223 in Moorhead.

Marcil is survived by his four daughters, Sharon (Robert) Irwin, Mankato MN, Lynette “Lynn” Peterson, Moorhead, Brenda (John) Schander, Sykston, ND, and Debra (Jerry) Barnum, West Fargo; 9 grandchildren; 2 stepgrandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a number of nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; sons-in-law Larry Lyngaas and Larry J. Peterson; his six brothers and four sisters, and his parents, John and Francis (Sedlacek) Paseka. May God bless his memory.

Visitation for Marcil will be Sunday, January 11, 2004, from 7 – 9 PM, with a prayer service at 8 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Funeral Mass will be Monday, January 12, 2004, at 10:30 AM, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Moorhead. Burial will take place in Moorhead Memorial Gardens.

Ernest Dahl

Ernest H. Dahl, age 78, of rural Felton, MN, died on Thursday, January 8, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital, South University, in Fargo, ND.

Ernest Harold Dahl, the son of Job and Ragna (Nelson) Dahl, was born in Fargo, ND, on May 5, 1925. He grew up and received his education in the rural Felton, MN, area. He graduated from Moorhead (MN) High School in 1943.

Ernest served in the US Army Air Corps, from 1943 to 1945. After his discharge he attended North Dakota Agricultural College (now known at North Dakota State University) in Fargo.

On August 3, 1948, Ernest was united in marriage to Marlys Pake at Estes Park, Colorado. They made their home in rural Felton. From 1951 to 1952, Ernest served his country a second time by serving in the US Air Force.

After his discharge, he returned to the family farm, where Ernest and Marlys farmed until they retired in 1979. After retirement, they continued to live on the farm. Ernest was a member of the Morken Township Board for many years. He was a member of the board of Minnesota State Farm Bureau and served as president of the Clay Co. Farm Bureau. He also sang in the FM Ambassador Chorus.

He is survived by his wife, Marlys, rural Felton; two sons, Duane, Lakewood, CO, and Larry (Amber) Dahl, West Fargo, ND; four daughters, Susan (Mike) Burk, Phoenix, AZ, Deborah (Lyle) Zeller, Anchorage, Alaska, Janet Hensrud, Moorhead, and Karen Harmonson, rural Felton; a brother, John (Eva) Dahl, Moorhead; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and a granddaughter, Robin Dahl.

Gladys S. Bertrand

Gladys S. Bertrand, 68, Fargo, ND, died Tuesday, January 6, 2004, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.

Gladys S. Bertrand was born April 24, 1935, in Fargo, to Gilbert and Helen (Raaen) Hagen. She was raised in the Fargo-Moorhead area where she attended school.

Gladys married Jerome J. Bertrand, June 13, 1952, in Park Rapids, MN, and they made their home in rural Moorhead until they moved to Georgetown, MN, in 1974. Gladys moved to Fargo in 1985 where she has since lived.

Gladys is survived by her two sons, Joseph J. (Kelly) Bertrand, Casper, WY, and Louis W. (Maria) Bertrand, Georgetown; one daughter, Rozanne (Calvin) Rector, Karlstad, MN; nine grandchildren, Kimberly, Christopher, Kyle, Cassity, Heather, Jeremy, Kayla, Travis and Ryan; and two brothers, Louie (Arla) Hagen, and Gilmer Hagen, both Moorhead.

Visitation: Friday, January 9, 2004; 6 – 8 PM Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead

Marlys Plymale

Marlys I. Plymale, 75, Fargo, ND, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Marlys Ione Mousseau, the daughter of George and Frieda (Olson) Mousseau, was born Sept. 20, 1928, in Fargo, where she grew up and received her education. She graduated from Fargo Central High School in the mid-1940s. As a young lady, she enlisted in the US Army and served until her discharge in January of 1952. While in the service, she was married to Robert Hardage.

Marlys returned to Fargo, where she had lived, except for a short time in Georgia. On Feb. 14, 1958, Marlys married Donald W. Plymale.

In 1970 Marlys moved to Christine, ND, and returned to Fargo in 1974. Marlys worked at the Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store in north Fargo, and from 1978 to 1983, as a security guard at Hector Airport in Fargo. She retired in 1983 and continued to live in Fargo.

Marlys is survived by two daughters, Kathy (John) Selisker, Bemidji, MN, and Laurie (Paul) Hempel, Christine, ND; a son, Donnie Plymale, Christine; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial service: Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at 1 PM Calvary Baptist Church, Fargo, North Dakota.

Burial: Riverside cemetery, Fargo, ND.

Otto Wiedmann

Otto Wiedmann, the son of Philip and Dorothea (Miller) Wiedmann, was born in a sod house west of Venturia, ND, in McIntosh County on September 10, 1912. His brothers were Adolph “Atzie” and Julius; sisters were Martha (Bertsch), Lydia (Nelson), Frieda (Bower), Annetta (Striebel), and Lea (Collins/White).

He graduated from Ashley (ND) High School in 1931, and taught grade school in Venturia from 1931 to 1937 while attending Ellendale (ND) Normal Industrial School during the summers. In 1937 he moved to Fargo, ND, to attend Dakota Business College. After graduating he worked for the ND Taxpayers Association and Northern States Power Company before starting a 34-year career with the US Postal Service in Fargo.

On June 15, 1941, Otto married Leah Gladys Krause from Lehr, ND. Three sons were born to them - Ronald Otto (1942), Dean Burdette (1947), and James Brent (1949). In October 1943, Otto was inducted into the US Army at Fort Snelling, MN. After completing basic training, he was sent to Italy where he became an administrative assistant in the 7th Army Headquarters Company which advanced from the French Riviera to the Rhine, and through southern Germany, where Otto was at the conclusion of the war. After the war, Otto returned to his job at the Fargo Post Office, and was also treasurer of the Fargo Postal Employees Federal Credit Union until he retired in 1974.

The Wiedmann family was active in the Calvary Baptist Church of Fargo, where Otto was treasurer and trustee for many years. During their retirement years, Otto and Leah spent the winters in Phoenix, AZ. In 1992 they sold their winter home and moved back to Fargo where they lived together until an illness last month made it necessary for Otto to become a resident of Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN, where he passed away peacefully on June 3, 2004, at ninety-one years of age.

Otto is survived by his wife, Leah, their sons, Ron (Glenna), Fargo, Dean (Linda), Detroit Lakes, and Jim (Pam), Phoenix; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Lydia (Ned) Nelson, Seattle, WA, and Lea White, Aberdeen, SD.

Visitation for Otto will be Sunday, June 6, 2004, from 5-8 PM, in Calvary Baptist Church, Fargo. The funeral will be Monday, June 7, 2004, at 1 PM, in the church. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.

Memorials may be directed to the Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund.

Mavis Whisler

Mavis T. Whisler, age 81, of Fargo, ND, died on Thursday, March 11, 2004 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Mavis Thompson, daughter of Oluf and Serena (Anderson) Thompson was born at Stewart, MN, on Dec. 6, 1922. She grew up and received her education in Stewart, where she graduated from high school in 1940.

On May 1, 1942, Mavis was united in marriage to John F. Whisler Jr., in New Orleans, LA. Following their marriage, they lived in Hutchinson, MN, North Mankota, MN, Thief River Falls, MN, and Moorhead, MN.

In 1962, the family moved to Bismarck, ND, where they lived for 15 years. The lived in Dickinson, ND for five years, and moved to Fargo, in 1982, where they have lived since. Her husband, John, died on March 2, 2002.

Mavis is survived by two daughters, Lynn Becker, Fargo, and Merilee (Dan) Ottoson, Pelican Rapids, MN; a son, Tom Whisler, Wickenburg, AZ; a sister, Viola Bemis, Litchfield, MN; a brother, Orville Thompson, Litchfield; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation: Sunday, from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, and one hour before the funeral, at the church.

Funeral service: Monday, March 15, 2004, at 2:00 PM Olivet Lutheran Church, Fargo, North Dakota.

Burial: Riverside cemetery, Fargo, ND.
