Jackie Johnson

Jackie Johnson, 64, of Leeds, ND, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 at her home in Leeds under Hospice Care.

Mass of the Resurrection will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Leeds with Fr. Matt Lanz officiating. Burial will be in the St. John's Catholic cemetery, Brinsmade, ND.

Visitation will be Friday from 2-8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. Vigil and Rosary at the Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds.

Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds, is in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth E. Hamel

Kenneth E. Hamel, 71, of Upham, ND, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, in a Minot, ND medical center.

A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at English Lutheran Church, Maxbass, ND.

Kenneth was born Jan. 12, 1932, at Eckman, ND, the son of Edmund and Ellen (Luddington) Hamel. He grew up in the Eckman/Maxbass area and moved to Upham in 1967. He married Donna Brandt on June 28, 1952 in Bottineau, ND. Kenneth went to work for Burlington Northern Railroad as a laborer and retired in 1994 after 43 years. Following his retirement he did maintenance for the City of Upham until July of 2003.

Kenneth enjoyed doing lawn work, especially raking. Kenneth liked drinking coffee and he was an avid pool player.

He is survived by his wife, Donna, Upham; children, Bob (Lyn) Hamel, Fargo, ND, Kathy Brandt, Upham, Jeff (Charlyn) Hamel, Towner, ND, Randy Hamel, Upham, and Lori (Greg) Nelson, Upham; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Louis (Theresa) Hamel, Gene (Bev) Hamel, Larry (Judy) Hamel, and Junior Hamel; sisters, Betty Teigen, Barbara (Marvin) Streich, and Elaine (Everett) Larson; brothers-in-law, Merlin (Marietta) Brandt and Milo Brandt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sons, and granddaughter, Danielle Radke.

Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, is in charge of arrangements.

Bonnie J. Schmidt

Bonnie J. Schmidt, 50, of Apache Junction, AZ, formerly of Petersburg, ND, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003 at Banner Gardens Hospice in Mesa, AZ.

Funeral services will be held at Petersburg Lutheran Church of Petersburg, ND, on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Officiating will be the Reverend Gary Knabe and the Reverend Fidel Hughes. Organist will be Mildred Larson, soloist will be Becky Vakoc. Interment will be at the Petersburg cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Kenneth Storbakken, Jerry Hanson, Arlan Johnson, John Morrison, Mike Yoney, Larry Landeis, Lanny Moore and James Schmidt.

Visitation will be held today at Petersburg Lutheran Church from 4-7 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Bonnie Jean Anton was born June 29, 1953 at Fordville, ND, the daughter of William J. and Beverly M. (Johnson) Anton. She received Holy Baptism and Confirmed her Christian faith at Dahlen Lutheran Church. She attended school at Dahlen and graduated from Unity High School at Petersburg in 1971. She then attended Grand Forks Hair Design.

Bonnie was united in marriage to Harvey D. Schmidt on May 27, 1972 at Dahlen Lutheran Church. They made their home in Grand Forks, where she became the owner of Bonnie's Beauty Salon until 1981. It was during this time that two children were born into their family: A daughter, Sheila and a son, Scott. In 1982, they moved to Cando, ND, and she became involved with upholstery work. A short time later they returned to Petersburg, where they purchased the former Cenex station and operated it as B & H Caf/, Service Center and Upholstery, until 1991. From that time until 1996 Bonnie was a cook and waitress at the Kite Caf/ in Michigan, ND, was a seamstress at C & R Laundry in Grand Forks, and continued her upholstery work at home.

In 1996 Bonnie was diagnosed with breast cancer. On Aug. 16, 1997, their daughter Sheila died, having suffered an asthma attack. Bonnie decided she wanted to see the country. They purchased a motor home and traveled, making their home at several destinations. Their most recent residence was Apache Junction, AZ. She would work in the south during the winter months and in the north during the summer months. The last three years Bonnie was employed at Walgreens in Arizona and in Colorado as a Certified Pharmacy Technician.

She was a loving mother and wife. She was a member of Petersburg Lutheran Church and had been a 4-H Leader for many years. She loved to travel, attend car shows, gardening and watching flowers bloom. She loved her family deeply and loved to decorate their home. Bonnie had a wonderful sense of humor and wit. She was an inspiration to others, leading by her example of strength and courage.

Bonnie will be deeply missed by her husband Harvey of Apache Junction, AZ; a son, Scott (Keri) Schmidt of Parker, CO; her mother, Beverly Anton of Park River, ND; a sister, Karen (Wallace) Horejsi of Fordville, ND; her grandmother, Bernice Fenske of Cando, ND; a son-in-law, Jeff Lund of Cambridge, MN; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Kenneth & Gilma Schmidt of Petersburg, ND; a brother-in-law, Victor Schmidt of Niagara, ND; two sisters-in-law, Donna Beard of Petersburg, ND and Diane (Donald) Blasey of Neilsville, MN, and also several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sheila Schmidt Lund; her father, William J. Anton; and her grandparents, Clarence Johnson and John and Ella Anton.

Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota, is in charge of arrangements.

Capt. A. Dean Rosen

Capt. A. Dean Rosen, MD, 63, of Bismarck, ND, formerly of Devils Lake, ND, died at his home on Monday, Nov. 17.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with Fr. Paul Becker officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans cemetery, Mandan, with full military honors by the VFW Post 1326 Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held today from 12-9 p.m. at Bismarck Funeral Home. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Dean was born Nov. 21, 1939, to Rudolph and Martha (Hardmeyer) Rosen at Mott, ND, where he grew up. After graduating from high school, Dean attended the college of Medical and Radiological Technology in Minneapolis. He worked as Assistant Director of the Laboratory and Radiology Department at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake. In the fall of 1960, he attended UND for his undergraduate and the first two years of medical school, then he attended Marquette Medical School and graduated in 1967.

He spent three years on active duty with the United States Navy. He did his Medical Internship at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md., then was assigned to the Navy School for Deep Sea Divers for training as a Decompression Chamber Medical Officer. He had a tour of duty in Vietnam aboard the Hospital Ship USS Sanctuary (AH-17). While in Vietnam, he was assigned at the 22nd Casualty Staging Facility in DaNang with the US Air Force for additional training in Medical Air Evacuation. After returning from Vietnam he was assigned to the Long Beach Naval Hospital until his discharge in 1970.

Upon discharge from active duty, he joined the United States Naval Reserve, retiring in 1999 after 36 years of service and holding the rank of Captain, USN. During his years in the Naval Reserve, he served in a wide variety of positions or billets. He was Commanding Officer for various Medical Units at the Naval Reserve Center, Fargo; was Staff Medical Officer at the Regional Naval Headquarters in Minneapolis; and served on two Selection Boards for promotion of Naval Medical Officers in Naval Headquarters, Washington, DC. He had five voluntary recalls to active duty.

In 1971 Dean joined the Lake Region Clinic in Devils Lake where he was a member of the Family Practice Department and the Certified American Academy of Family Physicians. While in private practice, he was involved with the State Medical Society, holding various positions on committees, boards, and councils throughout his medical career. He retired after 27 years of private practice.

Dean was active in the Devils Lake community, serving as Chairman of the Lake Region Clinic Corporation; Vice-Chairman of Hospital Staff, Mercy Hospital; Chairman of Devils Lake Area Chamber of Commerce; Vice-Chairman of Devils Lake Community Development Corporation; and member of St. Joseph's Church Board. Since retirement he took a part-time position as a Medical Consultant with the North Dakota Human Services Department, and he continued enjoying hunting, fishing, outdoor photography, woodworking, and yard work.

Surviving Dean are his wife, Jane, Bismarck; two daughters, Lynnell (Curtis) Linke, Encinitas, CA, and Janine (Kevin) Gigstad, Maddock, ND; one son, Terrence (Linda) Rosen, Bismarck; five grandchildren, Brandon and Chad Rosen, Dylan, Alexis, and Logan Gigstad; his mother, Martha Rosen, Mott; one brother, Arbert (Carol) Rosen, Florida; and one sister, Beatrice Vadner, Bowman, ND.

He was preceded in death by his father, Rudolph Rosen.

Tiffany Lea Johnson

Tiffany Lea Johnson, 19, of Casselton, ND, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003 in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Martin's Lutheran Church, Casselton.

Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 p.m. in West Funeral Chapel, Casselton, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Graveside services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the North Viking cemetery, Maddock, ND.

Tiffany was born July 28, 1984 at Bismarck, ND to Mark and Sherri (Olson) Johnson. She grew up in the Bismarck area, where she attended schools until moving with her family to Casselton in 2000. She graduated from Central Cass High School in 2002. Tiffany was currently a student at M.S.U.M., Moorhead, MN, majoring in mass communications and was employed by KVRR, Fox TV in Fargo.

She is survived by her parents, Mark and Sherri and a brother, Christopher, all of Casselton; paternal grandmother, Lois Johnson, Maddock, ND and maternal grandfather, Irving Olson, Mandan, ND.

West Funeral Home, Casselton, is in charge of arrangements.

Marla Rose (Littlewind) Kirk

Marla Rose (Littlewind) Kirk, 52, of Crow Hill, ND died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003 at Altru Hospital Grand Forks, ND.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Fort Totten. Fr. Chuck Luete will celebrate the Mass, with burial in St. Jeromes cemetery, Crow Hill, ND.

A Wake and Vigil service will be held Sunday, beginning a 5 p.m., at the Crow Hill Rec. Center, rural Crow Hill, ND. A Rosary and Scripture Service will be held at 8 p.m.

The procession to the Crow Hill Rec. Center will leave at 4:30 p.m. from Lake Country Auto, south of Wally's.

Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Leland A. Oleson

Leland A. Oleson, 83, of Devils Lake died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003 at the Good Samaritan Home, Devils Lake.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Harold Ovre will officiate and burial will be in the Norway Lutheran cemetery, rural Devils Lake. Music will be provided by Tom Burckhard, soloist and Lynda Pearson, organist.

Pallbearers will be Vernon Moen, Darin MacDonald, Bert Steffen, Gordon Fugle, Richard Moen and Dale Bergsrud.

Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home today from 1-9 p.m. and visitation on Wednesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.

Leland Albert Oleson was born on Oct. 19, 1920 in Poplar Grove Township, Ramsey County, ND, the son of Albert and Ella (McNamara) Oleson. He was reared and educated in Ramsey County attending country school in the area. He worked at home helping his parents for a time and then joined the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) working on many projects throughout the Midwest.

On Jan. 1, 1942, Leland was united in marriage to Mildred Moen at Duluth, MN where they established their home. Leland worked for the railroad building steam locomotives at Superior, Wis. He also worked in the ship yards in Duluth for several years. They returned to North Dakota where he farmed for a few years. Leland then worked for the Devils Lake Post Office, transporting mail from the train to the Post Office. He also worked as night watchman for the Montgomery Ward Store and later worked in maintenance as janitor and boiler man for Devils Lake Central High School for 14 years. Leland was the Superintendent of the Steam Plant for Devils Lake for 8 years, retiring August 5, 1983. Mildred and Leland continued to make their home in Devils Lake through the years.

After both Leland and Mildred retired, they traveled throughout the United States and spent many winters in Arizona and California spending time with their children and grandchildren. Leland loved to fish, hunt, play cards and board games and was a very talented builder and inventor. He really was a "jack of all trades." He did all of the carpentry and remodeling in their home. He also was a "hobby farmer" who loved the land and always had some livestock to care for.

Leland was a loving husband, father and grandfather whose strength, wisdom, kindness and best in the world hugs will be greatly missed by all.

Leland was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and member and past president of the Eagles Lodge. He also was a member of the Odd Fellows and Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mildred; son Daryl (Karen) of Mission Viejo, Calif.; daughters, Louise A. Oleson of Devils Lake and Lynn M. (Michael) James of Tucson, Ariz, ; grandchildren, twins, Jeffrey and Jennifer Oleson of Mission Viejo, Cassie and Resa James, Tucson; brother, Larry (Sandi) Oleson, Los Angeles, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, LeRoy Oleson and sister Lorraine Frazer.

Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Beverly A. Nash

Beverly A. Nash, 70, of Devils Lake, ND died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003 at the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Marvin Winstryg will officiate and burial will be in the Devils Lake cemetery. Music will be provided by Mary Oehlke, soloist and Naomi Modrow, organist.

Pallbearers will be Lawrence Johnson, Jerry Johnson, Gayle Hovdeness, Jerome Hoffart, McCarl Kavli and Mike Lee.

Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Thursday at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.

Beverly Ann Lee was born May 11, 1933 in Crookston, MN, the daughter of Harvey and Mildred (Mercy) Lee. She was reared in Devils Lake, met her future husband in 1947 while attending Devils Lake Central High School where she graduated with the class of 1952. She worked at Cox's Bakery in Devils Lake for several years.

On June 23, 1956, Beverly was united in marriage to John F. Nash at Devils Lake. They established their home in Devils Lake where they lived through the years. In 1958 she began working for the Ben Franklin Store, retiring in 1979 after over 20 years of service.

Beverly loved to travel and especially enjoyed spending time at the lake lot at Wolford's Point. She also liked to bowl and did so for many years.

Beverly was a member of the Eagles Aerie #2614 Ladies Auxiliary for 38 years and the VFW Post #756 Ladies Auxiliary for 23 years. Beverly fought a brave battle with Huntington's Chorea for many years.

May she rest in peace.

Beverly is survived by her husband of 47 years, Jack of Devils Lake; sisters-in-law, Carol Lee, Crosby, ND; Pat Calderwood, Apache Junction, Ariz.; Ruth Possen, Minot, ND; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents of Crookston, MN and brother, Ronald D. Lee of Crosby.

Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, is in charge of arrangements.
