Roger D. Soper
Roger D. Soper, 74, a long time Devils Lake businessman died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003 at the Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.
Funeral services will be held today at 10 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Rev. Gloria Anderson will officiate and burial will be in the Devils Lake cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars. Music will be provided by Donovan Foughty, soloist and Lynda Pearson, organist.
Honorary pallbearers will be all of Roger's grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to their charity of choice.
Roger D. Soper was born June 15, 1929 at Brocket, ND, the son of Audry E. and Alma (Malingen) Soper. He was reared and educated in Devils Lake. After high school he went to Seattle, WA where he worked for the Boeing Company. In 1949, he returned to North Dakota and began working with his Dad at Soper Construction. He also served with the 164th Infantry Division of the North Dakota National Guard for several years and received an Honorable Discharge with the rank of Corporal.
On Oct. 13, 1950, Roger was united in marriage to Alyce C. Olsen at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake. They established their home in Devils Lake where they have lived through the years. In 1954, Roger and his brothers, Byron, Vernell and Glenn operated the Exxon Service Station at 3rd Street and 3rd Avenue. In the late 1960's the Soper Brothers purchased the Exxon Station at 4th Street and 6th Avenue and the Humble Oil Company. Roger worked for Riggin Motors for a short time and then in 1963 he and his brothers formed Soper Brothers Construction. He retired from Soper Brothers in 1991.
Roger was an avid golfer and a lover of the outdoors, enjoying both hunting and fishing.
He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the Devils Lake Elks Lodge and the Devils Lake Town and Country Club.
Roger is survived by his wife of 53 years, Alyce; daughters, Barbara (Scott) Barman of Evans, GA; Cathey (Richard) Wallace of Minot, ND; son, Gregory (Marla) Soper of Devils Lake; grandchildren, Matthew Barman and Michael Barman of Evans, GA; Ryan Wallace of Grand Forks, ND; and Laura Wallace of Minneapolis, MN; Jesse Soper of Argusville, ND; Dustin Soper and Kayla Soper, both of Fargo; brothers, Donald (Shirley) Soper, Vernell Soper, Glenn (Betty) Soper and Byron (Mae) Soper, all of Devils Lake; and Jay (Carole) Soper of Surprise, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Clara Soper.

Isabel Nelson
Isabel Nelson, 98, of Devils Lake, ND formerly of the Sarles/Clyde, ND area, died on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003 at the Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake. Rev. Kenneth Iverson will officiate. A Graveside Service will be held Friday in the Sarles cemetery, Sarles, ND at 1:45 p.m.
Isabel Brumwell was born on Oct. 29, 1905 at Raymond, WA, the daughter of William Henry and Catherine (Dobie) Brumwell. She was reared and educated in the Sarles area, attending Sarles Public Schools and Sarles High School. She attended Nurses Training at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
On Jan. 25, 1927, Isabel was united in marriage to Edward William Nelson in Minneapolis, MN. They established their home in Clyde for 20 years, where Mr. Nelson managed the grain elevator. In 1947, they moved to Sarles where they made their home through the years. Mr. Nelson died in 1982. Isabel became a resident of Heartland Care Center in 1995.
Isabel was a member of the Sarles Presbyterian Church, active member of the Sarles American Legion Auxiliary and Eastern Star.
Isabel is survived by her daughters, Sonjie Johnson of St. Paul, MN, Beverlie (Art) Williams of Boca Raton, Fla., and Vivian (Woody) Melena of O'Neill, NE; daughter-in-law, Doris Nelson of Crabtree, OR; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Floy Higgins of Cando, ND; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Isabel is also survived by the many nurses, nurses aides and her beloved caretaker, Leta Holsinger.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward; son, Ed Nelson; grandson, Mark Johnson; sisters, Grace Anderson, Alice Brumwell and Beth Neargaard; and brothers, Walter, William, Howard and Malcolm Brumwell.

Anna Lucille Brakke
Anna Lucille Brakke, 89, of Hillsboro, ND, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003 at the Hillsboro Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hillsboro, with burial in Riverside cemetery, Hillsboro.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at Wildeman Funeral Home, Hillsboro.
Memorials are preferred to Hillsboro Nursing Home or to Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Lucille was born March 11, 1914 in Calvin, ND, to Peter and Anna (Keeney) Thoreson. She was raised in the Calvin area and later moved to Devils Lake with her family. It was there that she met her future husband, Nels Brakke. They were married
Feb. 20, 1936 in New Rockford, ND. In 1937, they moved to Hillsboro where Nels owned and operated Brakke's Rexall Drug. Lucille worked at home raising their three children. Nels died July 7th, 1987.
Lucille belonged to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, a local Bridge club and Birthday Club. She enjoyed golfing, crossword puzzles, gardening and card games, and took particular delight in her eight grandchildren. She entered the Hillsboro Nursing Home in October of 1999.
Lucille is survived by her sons, Brad (Georgia) Brakke, Carmel, IN, and Jon (Sharon) Brakke, Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren, Paul (Lalitha) Brakke, Kristen (Paul) Ziegler, and Karen Brakke, Anne (Mark) Renstrom, Jennifer Brose, Tim Brose, and Jeff (Niki) Brose; great-grandchildren, Krishnen and Erik; Laura and Steven; Franklin and Joey; Luke; and Cole; one brother, Sam (Virginia) Thoreson, Roswell, NM; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Barbara; grandson, Peter Brakke; great-grandson, Kellyn Brose; sister, Marge Stephens; and brothers, Peter and Brad Thoreson.

Rev. Roger Thoreson
Rev. Roger Thoreson, 62, of Garreston, SD, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003 at his home.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Garreston. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran cemetery, Garreston.
Visitation will begin today at 4 p.m., with the family present from 7-8 p.m., at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garreston.
Roger was born Dec. 25, 1940 in Flandreau, SD, the son of Neal and Myrtle (Paulson) Thoreson. He attended Flandreau High School and graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls in 1962. He taught history, English and speech at Garreston High School. He also taught high school at Lincoln Central in Gruver, Iowa.
Roger married
Anne Williamson on Dec. 21, 1963 at Zion Lutheran Church in Garreston. In June of 1964 he entered Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, MN. He served his year of internship of Ascension Lutheran Church in Thousand Oaks, Calif. After graduating with a Bachelor's Degree of Divinity, he was called to St. John's Lutheran Church in St. Thomas, ND.
He also served in the ministry at St. Olaf Lutheran Church and Peace Lutheran Church, both in Devils Lake, ND. In 1991, Roger was called to minister at Golden Ridge Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND. After suffering a stroke, Roger retired from the ministry. He and Anne then moved to Garreston.
Roger was active in the Fort Totten and Fargo-Moorhead Theatres in North Dakota, including starring roles in Fiddler on the Roof, The Music Man, Teddy and Alice, My Fair Lady and Man of La Mancha. He enjoyed years of hunting and fishing while residing in North Dakota, often with his fellow pastors, friends and his brothers. He also enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, tending to his weimaranders and driving his John Deere tractor.
Roger is survived by his wife, Anne (Williamson) Thoreson, Garreston; son, Seth (Elisa) Thoreson; daughters, Sara (Gregg) Nothstine and Solveig Lymon; granddaughters, Kaitlyn, Jordyn, Nobel and Aliah, which he deeply adored; his grandson and best buddy, Diontae; brothers and sisters, Marlyn and Beverly Thoreson, Rapid City, SD; Laurel and Betty Thoreson, West Fargo, ND; Nyla and Buel Donaldson, Tampa Fla.; Rev. Ronald and Marilyn Thoreson, Sacramento, Calif.; Arlys and Denny Johnson, Jeffersonville, IN; Rev. David and Kathy Thoreson, Leonard, ND; Gary and Luci Thoreson, Ortonville, MN; and a sister-in-law, Delrose Thoreson, Rohnert, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dwayne.

Luetta B. Roed
Luetta B. Roed, 79, long time Devils Lake, ND resident, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Rev. Harold Ovre will officiate and burial will be in the Devils Lake cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home on Friday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Saturday at the church prior to the funeral service.
Her grandsons will be serving as pallbearers, Dale and Robert Roed; Jamie, Chris and Jesse Roed; Sean Roed; Brad and Steve Schneider.
Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters, Mari Lou Harveland, Amber Thurman, Ashley Roed, Brenda Camrin, Sandy Berkenkamp and Deanna Munoz; Chelsi and Courtney Kraft; and Shera Brandvold.
Luetta B. Neil was born March 28, 1924 in Wellsburg, ND the daughter of William and Bertha (Steele) Neil. As a young girl she moved with her parents to a farm at rural St. Michael, ND. She attended Mission Township School and Devils Lake High School.
Luetta was united in marriage to Bert M. Roed on May 10, 1941 in Devils Lake. They established their home in Devils Lake where she has lived through the years. Mr. Roed died Nov. 6, 1997. While Mr. Roed served as Ramsey County Sheriff, Luetta served as Matron and Cook for the Ramsey County Sheriff's Dept. for eight years. She later worked at the Devils Lake Elks Lodge as a cook for over 20 years.
She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, WELCA, Ramsey County Homemakers, American Legion Auxiliary, V.F.W. Auxiliary, Eagles Auxiliary and the N.D. Peace Officers Association.
Luetta loved spending time with her grandchildren, baking, gardening and caring for her flowers.
She had recently been living in the Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Gary (Judy) Roed of Minot, ND; Rick (Michelle) Roed of Maple Valley, WA; William "Bill" (Pat) Roed of Englewood, CO; and Terry Roed of Marysville, Washington; daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie (Joe, Jr.) Keller of Bakersfield, CA; Vickie (Robert) Schneider of Crary, ND; and Laurie (Keith) Kraft of Devils Lake; 17 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and three sisters.

Mary A. Sherven, 96, of Cando, ND, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003 at Towner County Medical Center, Cando.
Funeral services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, Cando, with interment at the I.O.O.F. cemetery in Cando. Officiating will be Rev. Tim Vorlage, with Jackie Smeltzer as organist and Cathy Anfinson as vocalist.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2-8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Russell Hornung, 56, of Skyeston, ND, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003 at the Carrington Health Center, Carrington, ND.

Marie A. Haugen
Marie A. Haugen, 74, Cando, ND, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003 at Towner Medical Center of Cando.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:30 PM at the Cando Lutheran Church of Cando with interment at the I.O.O.F. cemetery in Cando, ND. Officiating will be Rev. Keith Gunderson with Roberta Mundahl as organist and Babe Belzer as vocalist.
Casket bearers will be Curtis Hallaway, Al Peterson, Kent Haugen, Bob Curl, Jim Gibbens, and Jim Mellon.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2-8 p.m. with a 4 p.m. prayer service, all at Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home of Cando and also for one hour before services at the church on Monday.
Marie Alberta Jacobson, daughter of James and Elizabeth (Bertram) Jacobson, was born July 17, 1929 at Newville, ND. She was raised and attended the Egeland County School near Egeland, ND and graduated from Cando High School in 1946.
Marie married
Duane W. Haugen on May 20, 1956 at Cando. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Cando. Marie worked for the First State Bank of Cando, the Palmer Clinic of Cando and as the Business Manager of the Cando School from 1969 until 1994. She later worked at Spirit Lake Casino near Devils Lake, ND.
Marie was a member of the Cando Lutheran Church, Order of Eastern Star, Entre Nous Club, the ND Young American Bowling Alliance since 1966, which she has served as state secretary since 1979 and the Cando City Council. She served as Chairman of the Cando Airport Authority and was a member of the Towner County Social Service Board. She served as secretary of the Steering Committee for the 75th and 100th Cando City Anniversary Celebrations and of the Cando Golf Club Board. Marie received the Marion Armey Award for dedication to Youth Bowling in the state of North Dakota; she received special recognition by the State Business Managers Association in honor of 25 years of service to the Cando School and she was an honorary member of the FFA Chapter of Cando.
Marie's hobbies included camping, golfing, fishing, deer hunting and playing pinochle and she enjoyed her summer trips with the pinochle women's group.
She is survived by her husband, Duane of Cando; her sons and their wives, Kerry and Roxanne Haugen, Mark and Chris Haugen and Brian and Lavonne Haugen, all of Cando and her seven grandchildren, Rose, Tammy, Jesse, Tracy, Kaitlin, Melanie and Josh.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Edward Jacobson.

Rosella Aasmundstad, 78, of Valley City, ND, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003 at Mercy Hospital in Valley City.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Valley City, with Rev. Paul Huso and Rev. Mark Ostgarden officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside cemetery, Valley City.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-8 p.m. in the Peterson-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home, Valley City, and one hour before services in the church on Thursday afternoon.
