Alfred H. Rostad
Alfred H. Rostad, 84, of Fargo, died Thursday, October 2, 2003, at Innovis Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Alfred Howard Rostad was born to Halvor and Anna (Askvig) Rostad on March 27, 1919, in Carpio, North Dakota.
Alfred served in the U.S. Army from April of 1943 until January of 1946. He returned to the Minot (ND) area, where he worked at Bridgeman Creamery for four years. He then met and married
Mildred Lund. They lived in the Minot and New Rockford areas where Alfred was a contractor along with his brother, Emery and father, Halvor. In 1968, they moved to Fargo where Alfred built houses with his son, Howard and grandson, Jeff. He also was the building manager at Twin Towers Condos in Fargo.
Alfred is survived by his sister, Evelyn Anderson, Minot, ND; his children, Bonnie (Milton) Walz, West Fargo, ND; Howard (Barbara) Rostad, Phoenix, AZ; Lori Ross, Muskogee, OK; Darlene (Bill) Weiss, Bismarck, ND; his grandchildren, Angie, Tina, Jeff (Ann), JoDee (Jessie), Mandy (Ethan), Aaron (Elaine), Tracy (Toby); great grandchildren, Liz, Jen, Ally, Jessieca, Jilly, Amber, Jacob, Joey, Taylor, and Alexander.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brothers, Emery and Jerald; and sister, Angeline.

David Burton Sandbeck
David Burton Sandbeck, 49, Fargo, died Thursday, February 27, 2003 at his home in Fargo.
David was born December 15, 1953 in Alexandria, MN. He grew up in Fargo and graduated from Fargo South in 1972. He also attended NDSU.
He had his own painting business in Fargo for many years.
David was a loyal son, brother, and a very fun uncle. He loved his nieces and nephew.
He did many nice things for his neighbors and was always concerned for the older people who lived nearby. He loved golfing, fishing, and fireworks on the fourth of July, and he was an avid gardener.
He will be missed by his mother, Delores Sandbeck, Fargo, his sister, Lori, Moreno Valley, CA, his sister and brother-in-law, Ron and Leanne Horner, Bismarck and his nieces, Kristen and Linsey and nephew, Ryan.
He was preceded in death by his father, Burton.
Visitation: 5 to 7 PM, Sunday, March 2nd at Hanson-Runsvold, Fargo and for one hour before services.
Funeral: 1 PM, Monday, March 3rd at Hanson-Runsvold, Fargo.
Burial: Riverside cemetery, Moorhead, MN.
A. K. "Sandy" Sanden
A. K. "Sandy" Sanden, 86, Fargo, ND, died Sunday, August 17, 2003, at his home in Mesa, AZ.
Alton K. Sanden was born on December 7, 1916, the son of Albert and Ellen (Nybo) Sanden. He grew up and graduated from high school in Luverne, ND. He graduated from Valley City State University and later pursued graduate studies in music at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. After teaching school, he entered the United States Air Force and served as a pilot during World War II.
Sandy returned to Fargo and worked for the Veteran’s Administration until 1977 when he retired as the Chief Adjudication Officer. His wife, Edna, died January 17, 1984. He later married
Eleanore O’Neill on July 11, 1986 in Basin, Wyoming. They continued to live in Fargo and Mesa.
Sandy enjoyed golf, music, woodworking and spending time with his family at Pelican Lake. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Fargo.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanore O’Neill Sanden, Mesa, AZ; daughter, Loree A. Carlisle, Seattle WA; son, James M. Sanden, Fargo, ND: three grandchildren, Robyn Lynn Carlisle, Cristina Carlisle Moore, and Craig Mitchell Carlisle.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edna; a brother and sister.

Earl Sletten
Earl Sletten, 97, died February 6, 2003, at Eventide Nursing Home, Moorhead.
Earl Melvin Sletten was born December 9, 1905 in Willmar, MN, to H.M. and Inga Sletten. He spent his childhood in South Dakota, graduating from Timber Lake High School in 1929. He farmed for several years and attended barber school before being called into the ministry. He graduated from St. Olaf College in 1936 and Luther Seminary in 1940. He served parishes in Taylor, New Rockford, Kindred and Hoople, North Dakota. Upon his retirement he served interim positions in various places in Northwest Minnesota.
He married
Inga (Barstad) Sletten on June 8, 1940. She died in 1969. He married
Ruth (Watnam) Gronna on December 27, 1969. She died in 1981. He married
Agnes (Bergee) Borg-Breen on March 19, 1983.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes, three children, Paul (Melanie) McLean, Va., Joel (Alice) Sterling, Va., and Ruth (Richard) Clemenson of Hoople, ND, eight grandchildren, three great-granchildren, four stepchildren, Marjorie (Bill) Newman, Henderson, Nevada, Elizabeth (Chuck) Peterson, Chicago, Illinois, Edward (Sherry) Borg-Breen, Reston, Virginia, and Karen (David) Scheels, Tacoma, Washington, nine step-grandchildren, seven step-greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Irene Thoresen, Willmar, Mn., Julia Benson, Minneapolis, Mn and one brother, Rolf Sletten, Willmar, Mn.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Owen and Harold.
The family prefers memorials in lieu of flowers.

Bertha O. Stromme
Bertha O. (Nomeland) Stromme, 90, of Fargo, died Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at Bethany Homes, Fargo.
Bertha, daughter of Osmond and Matilda (Naas) Nomeland, was born on September 1, 1912 in Kloten ND. She attended high school in Kloten, graduating in 1930, and then attended the State Teachers College in Mayville, ND, graduating in 1933. She then taught school for nine-and-a-half years in Mayville, ND. On December 24, 1941, she married
Adolph Kibsgard Stromme in Kloten, ND. She traveled with Adolph whille he was in the service until he went overseas during World War II. While he was gone, she returned to Kloten and taught school. After the war, she moved to Fargo where she worked as the Secretary/Treasurer at the Barber College. She retired from there in 1987. Adolph died on August 28, 1996. Bertha then moved to Bethany in 1999.
Bertha was an active member of First Lutheran Church, Fargo where she served as President of the First Lutheran Church Women from 1966-67, involved with the Quota Club for many years, and involved with the C-400.
Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, A.K. Stromme.
Bertha is survived by one daughter, Susan Palmeri (Gary) of Parker, CO, and one granddaughter, Michele Beveridge (Jeffery) of Thorton, CO.

Ann Charbonneau Vander Maten
Ann was born January 26th 1940, in Spencer, Iowa, to the late Elmo Leroy and Dorothy Jane Charbonneau of Lisbon, N.D. She spent her younger years in Fulton, MO, moving to Lisbon when she was twelve. She graduated from Lisbon High School in 1958, and attended the University of North Dakota. Ann then moved to Minneapolis, MN, where she graduated from Brown Institute of Broadcasting in 1960 and began working at KLFD Radio in Litchfield.
In 1961, Ann married
Jon Derwood Kent of Detroit Lakes. Two daughters were born to this union: Jamie Ann Larson (Mike), of Fargo, and Jodi Jon Evenson (Peter), of Moorhead. Ann and her daughters moved to Moorhead, MN in 1976, and she joined the staff at Jack Akre Interior Design. She attended Moorhead State University, earning a degree in Speech Communications and Theatre Arts in 1981.
After graduating, Ann taught the first creative dramatics class for children at Trollwood’s summer theatre program, and in local day cares throughout Fargo. She was married
to Carl Medin from 1982-1985. It was also during this time that she joined the staff of the Fargo-Moorhead Community Theatre, creating and developing the Prairie Theatre Academy for children. This involved teaching drama classes and directing all children’s productions. Ann also developed and toured with her creation of Fourth Street Players, providing an out-reach to high schools on drug and alcohol abuse.
In her spare time, Ann founded and directed the Gooseberry Park Players under the Moorhead Parks and Recreation Dept. This remains a summer theatre program by children and for children. She also spent four years as an Artist in Residence for the state of North Dakota, traveling to schools throughout the state teaching creative dramatics.
In 1987, Ann married
John Vander Maten of Fargo, and became stepmother to Jill Christine Vander Maten (Brent Lamblez) Dent, MN, and Eric J. Vander Maten (Jennifer Spahn) Omaha, NE. She spent many years teaching creative dramatics for the Moorhead School System, and developed a spelling pilot program using drama as a teaching tool for children with learning disabilities. In 1992, Ann founded and directed the Silver Follies. This continues as a senior adult theatre group at the Fargo Moorhead Community Theatre, and performs in the surrounding areas as an out-reach program of the theatre.
After 13 years at FMCT, Ann retired to join her husband in opening Vander House, a group home for adolescent boys. She also opened the Border Buddies Stamp Studio with her partner, Cheryl Toutges. However, after a year, she left the store to return to being a full-time mom to the boys at Vander House. For eight years she added ten young men to her family.
Ann was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Moorhead, and is survived by her husband, four children, and granddaughter: Shea Alexandra Steidl-Kent, and a grandson: Gabriel Kent Evenson. Her mother, father, two uncles three aunts, and two cousins preceded her in death. Ann died peacefully on May 11, 2003 after a long battle with ovarian cancer.
A celebration service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Moorhead, on May 14, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. Because of Ann’s love for theatre, she requested that all memorials go to Gooseberry Park Players (theatre by children for children) Moorhead, MN.
Alvin Johnson
Alvin Johnson, 66, of Fargo, ND, died February 26, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Alvin Selmer Johnson was born October 28, 1937, to Selmer and Alice (Oslie) Johnson of rural Walcott, ND. He was baptized and confirmed at South Pleasant Lutheran Church. Alvin graduated from Kindred High School with his future wife Barbara Johnson in 1955. Alvin graduated from Concordia College in 1962. He married
Barbara Johnson at Norman Lutheran Church on August 15, 1959.
Alvin started his social services career in Minnewaukan, ND, he was a supervisor at Cass County Social Services for many years and was Director of Traill County Social Services for eight years and retired in 1997. Alvin served on boards for the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center and Southeast Human Services.
He also served as church organist at South Pleasant Lutheran Church, Walcott, ND, from 1952 – 1960. Alvin was church organist at Bethlehem Lutheran Church from 1962 until the time of his death.
Alvin is survived by his wife, Barbara Johnson, Fargo, ND; two daughters, Suzanne (James) Sandsmark, Fargo, ND; Lynee (Christopher) Meier, Grand Forks, ND; one brother, Jerry Johnson, Devils Lake, ND; three grandchildren, Katie and Erin Sandsmark, and Jonathan Meier.

Adam Garret Swart
Adam Garret Swart was born December 3, 1986 in Fargo, ND. He grew up in Fargo attending Longfellow Elementary School, Ben Franklin Jr. High and was currently a junior at Fargo North High School where he was an honor student. An enthusiastic and talented athlete, Adam played on multiple Babe Ruth, Fargo Bombers and North High baseball teams. A standout football player, he had been named a captain for the North team for the 2004 season. He was a knowledgeable sports fan, with favorite teams the Chicago White Sox and the New England Patriots.
Adam brightened the lives of his family and friends playing cards, xbox, weightlifting and fishing with his dad and brothers. His good natured humor and easy demeanor made him a beacon in our lives.
Adam was a gentle soul with a big heart who led by example. He always favored the underdog, always expressed heartfelt sympathy for the disadvantaged, and always lent a helping hand with a smiling face.
He is survived by his parents, Cathy Swart and Dirk and Cherie Swart; two very loving and proud brothers, Aaron Swart, Minneapolis, and Jonathan Swart, Fargo ND, grandparents, Patricia Lee (Russell), Toledo, OH; step grandparents Ernest and Shirley Harris, Harrison, MI, special friend, Ashley Anderson, Fargo, ND; He is also survived by several Aunts and Uncles, cousins and many friends. We will all miss him forever.
He was preceded in death by his Grandfather Garret Swart, Grandparents Sam and Sadie Seaman.

Aaron S. Erickson
Aaron S. Erickson, 29, of Fargo, died Sunday, January 18, 2004, at Fargo, ND.
Aaron Stanley Erickson was born October 11, 1976, at Fargo, ND, the son of Daniel and Lynette (Paulsrud) Erickson. He grew up and attended school in Fargo. Aaron graduated from Fargo North High in 1993.
He started working construction and was employed by A & G Drywall in Fargo. He enjoyed playing pool and hunting.
Aaron is survived by his father, Daniel (Pam) Erickson, Fargo, ND; his mother, Lynette (Tim) Flieth, Fargo, ND; grandmothers, Leona Paulsrud, Fargo, ND and Gladys Erickson, West Fargo, ND; a sister, Stacy (Todd) Suedel, Blue Ash, OH; one brother, Chad Erickson, Fargo, ND; two half-brothers; Ryan Daly and Brandon Daly, Fargo, ND; three step-brothers, Eric (Dani) Fluge; Joe Fluge; Scott Fluge, all of Fargo, ND.

Alice B. Ivers
Alice B. Ivers, 84, Fargo, North Dakota died February 2. 2004 at Eventide Lutheran Nursing Home, Moorhead, Minnesota.
Alice Bertha Myrhe was born May 24, 1919 at Rollag, Minnesota the daughter of Thomas K. and Inga (Johnson) Myrhe. She grew up and attended school in Casselton and Sanborn. She was the head buyer for deLendricies for many years.
She married
Dr. George Ivers on April 8, 1953 at First Lutheran Church, Fargo, North Dakota. They made their home in Fargo. He died on January 25, 1966.
Alice was an active member of First Lutheran Church, the Fine Arts Club, Fargo Country Club and a Neighborhood Prayer Group. She enjoyed traveling and was a world wide traveler and spent time at her lake home on Lake Lida.
She is survived by 2 sisters, Grace (D. E.) McCullagh, Fargo, ND; and Elinor Mickelson, St. Paul, MN; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, parents, and 3 brothers, John, Milton, and Kenneth Myrhe.
The family would like to thank the staff at Eventide where Alice lived for 6 years.
