Her role in the First Presbyterian Church as an Elder enabled her to work for and with the families of the Mission Church at Fort Totten. The families there have always meant a great deal to her. As State President for Church Women United, she helped secure a large sum of money for the United Tribes Trade School of Bismarck. The money was used for work with Native American women on the campus for their schooling, social activities, child care, and occupational aids. When her husband served in the North Dakota legislature, she did volunteer work with the Native American inmates at the State prison. She also helped start a group called Project Bridge whose purpose was to bridge relations between Native Americans and Non-Native Americans in the Fargo-Moorhead area. The results of her efforts were changes in the curriculum taught about Native Americans in North Dakota and the development of an in-service workshop for teachers in the Fargo Public Schools stressing sensitivity and positive attitudes. She has written grants to secure funding for Native American Centers, clinics, and projects. In recent years, she assisted with the Native American auction to raise scholarship funds for Native American students. "She Walks in a Sacred Manner" was a special Native American name given to her by the Chief at Ft. Totten. Betty was primarily responsible for the construction of the Bdecan Presbyterian Church on the Reservation.
Betty was a charter member and past president of Chapter AE of P.E.O.. She had many other interests including Fortnightly study group, Town Hall Lecture Series, Salvation Army, YWCA, and Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, but the closest to her heart was her unconditional love for her family and friends.
