Elaine M. Laches
(October 27, 1924 - July 2, 2012)

Funeral services for Elaine Laches, age 87, of Mott, ND will be held at 10:00a.m. MDT Friday, July 6, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mott, ND with Pastor John Amundson officiating. Burial will be in the Mott Sunnyslope cemetery. Visitations will be from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 5 at the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Mott, ND and one hour prior to the funeral on Friday morning at the church.

Elaine Fraase was born October 27, 1924 in Emden, ND to Fred and Elizabeth (Buschold) Fraase. She was the oldest of seven children. As a young girl her family moved to Freda, ND where she grew up and was educated in a rural school near Freda.

Elaine married Kasper Laches October 4, 1941. Later that year Kasper went in the Army until 1945 when Germany surrendered. Elaine and Kasper moved to Mott where she was employed for ten plus years as a telephone operator in the Mott office of Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. While in Mott, three sons were born, Dennis, Kenneth and Robert. Elaine was a long time resident of West Mott for over 70 years, enduring several floods only to return to her home afterwards to pick up the pieces and continue. She was a member of a Mott Homemakers Club for a number of years, and served on the West Mott precinct election board.

Elaine passed away on Monday, July 2, 2012 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.

She is survived by her three sons and one daughter-in-law, Dennis Laches, Mott, ND, Kenneth and Linda (Frank) Laches, Chandler, AZ, Robert Laches, Mandan, ND; her grandchildren, Bryan and Tricia Laches, Scottsdale, AZ, Jessica and Sean Valley, Chandler, AZ; and her great-grandchildren, Jordan and James Laches and Addison Valley, one brother Rodger (Sharleen) Fraase, Dickinson, ND, One sister Alice Fischer, Carson, ND, Two sisters-in-law Betty Fraase, Fargo, ND, Mercy Fraase, Tacoma, Washington, one brother-in-law Glenn Udell, Carson, ND and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Kasper Laches; two brothers, Fred and Ronald Fraase; two sisters, Adeline Chadwick and Ina Udell.

Albert J. Messmer
(September 23, 1927 - July 6, 2012)

Albert Messmer, age 84 of Mott, passed away early Friday morning, July 6, 2012 at MedCenter One in Bismarck.

The Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30am Monday, July 9, 2012 at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Mott. Fr. Mike Millard and Deacon Robert Zent will officiate with burial Sunnyslope cemetery in Mott.

A Rosary Service will be held 7:00 pm on Sunday evening at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Mott with Deacon David Crane, officiating.

Special music will be provided by Pat Schwartz.

Serving as casketbearers are Gene Messmer, Dale Friedt, Jack Zent, Tim Hoyt, Duane Friedt, and Kelly Messmer.

ALBERT JOHN MESSMER was born September 23, 1927 at Mott, ND, the oldest of five children born to Lloyd and Philipena (Marthaller) Messmer. He grew up on the family farm and attended a local country school near his home and at an early age began working with his parents on the farm.

He was united in marriage to Josephine Koenig on October 20, 1947 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church south of Richardton. They began their life together on the Messmer farm where they farmed, ranched, and raised their family.

Albert was a member of St. Vincent’s Catholic Church, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and served for many years as the Acme Township Board chairman.

He enjoyed playing cards and visiting with his many friends over a cup of coffee.

Survivors include his wife Josie, Mott, 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Chuck Peterson, Withee, WI; Yvonne and Tim Wagner, Sarasota, FL; JoAnn and Jerry Gilles, Ankeny, IA; 1 son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Jeanne Messmer, Richardton, ND; 5 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 1 brother and 2 sisters-in-law, Victor and Clara Messmer, Bismarck, ND; Pauline Messmer, Dickinson, ND 1 sister and brother-in-law, Venita and Don Blatz, Lino Lakes, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 to 7:00pm at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Mott.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Marie Therese Messmer in infancy, 2 brothers, Clarence and Ernest Messmer.

Jimmy Jon Howe
(September 4, 1935 - July 10, 2012)

Funeral service for Jimmy Jon Howe, 76, of Hettinger, ND will be held at 10:30am Friday, July 13, 2012 at the Hettinger Lutheran Church. Pastor Kathleen Dettmann and Rev. Joe Burgess will officiate with burial in the Hettinger cemetery.

Visitation will be on Thursday from 1:00 to the time of the Gathering of Family and Friends Service at 7:30pm at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Hettinger.

Jimmy Jon Howe was born September 4, 1935 in Reeder, ND, the son of Floyd and Sylvia Howe. He lived all his life on the Howe Hereford Ranch, south of Reeder, ND. He attended country school and graduated from Hettinger High School. He was an all-around athlete enjoying varsity sports: football, basketball and baseball. He was a Black Devil, a Shooting Star and a Bear. He participated in FFA, band, choir, men’s glee club, student council and Vice President of the 1953 Senior Class. He took great pride in showing registered horned Hereford cattle, a tradition he passed on to his girls growing up on the ranch.

He attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD studying animal husbandry and returned to the ranch to begin a 40 year career raising Herefords with his father. Jim honorably served his country, as a member of Company C with the 817th Combat Engineers Battalion of the North Dakota National Guard in 1958.

In 1960 Jimmy married Pamela Brandt in Hettinger. They had three children, Christine (Kyle) Lenerville, Richardton, ND; Brenda (Rob) Bartholomew, Rapid City, SD; and Jewel (JD) Coffman, Columbia, MO. In 1975 he married Harriet Tobin in Hettinger. Jimmy and Harriet had one daughter, Maureen, Sioux Falls, SD.

Jimmy had a lifelong interest in breeding and raising Hereford cattle and was assisted by his trusted employee and personal friend, Rik Baumeister. He was a member of the North Dakota Stockman’s Association as well as the North Dakota and American Hereford Association. Jimmy was very involved in the community. He was Board of Director Secretary at Reeder Grain and Chairman of the Board of West River Regional Medical Center for many years. He had many interests including bowling, golf, West River Saddle Club and western art. Jimmy was a member of Hettinger Lutheran Church serving as Superintendent of Sunday School. Most of all he loved following the school and 4-H activities of his four girls.

Jimmy Howe died July 10, 2012, under the care of the Good Samaritan Home in Mott.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Sylvia Howe and his beloved dog Buddy. He is survived by his wife Harriet, four daughters and sons-in-law, seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bruce and Wava Howe, Dickinson, ND; David and Charlene Howe, Anchorage, AK; one sister, Avis Howe, Denver, CO; and numerous cousins.

In lieu of flowers Memorials have been established by the family.

Patricia "Pat" Kolb
June 14, 1924 - December 13, 2012

Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Bison. Fr. Tony Grossenburg will officiate. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. at the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis Tuesday afternoon.

Patricia Pearl O’Rourke was born June 14, 1924, during a windstorm on the family homestead near Meadow, SD. Pat was the seventh child born to W. J. “Shorty” and Rosa (Staudenraus) O’Rourke. Her aunt, who had helped with the birth, jokingly suggested she be named Cyclone Sally. Pat attended rural Rainbow school through the 8th grade, and graduated from Bison High School in 1943.

Following graduation Pat worked for the Perkins County Abstract Company and the AAA office. Pat married Ted Kolb on Friday September 13th, 1948 in Presho, SD. Pat and Ted made their home in Bison, SD, where Pat worked for many years in the Perkins County Courthouse. The Kolb’s family grew with the birth of two sons, Randy in 1952, and Shane in 1960. In the late 1950’s, Pat and Ted started ranching on the O’Rourke homestead near Meadow. Pat continued to work at various offices in Bison, but was primarily a stay at home mother and ranch wife. Pat took an active role in her children’s activities, which led to a lifelong commitment to community service. Through 4-H, rodeo, and her devotion to the Catholic Church, Pat influenced and touched the lives of many over the years. With over 40 years of service as a 4-H leader, Pat was honored in 2002 to be one of the first 100 inductees into the South Dakota 4-H Hall of Fame.

Pat passed away on December 13, 2012 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.

She is survived by two sons, Randy (Kathy) Kolb Blaine, MN and Shane (Angie) Kolb, Meadow, SD; granddaughter, Julie Kolb, Blaine, MN; grandsons, Chris (Marnie) Telkamp Centennial, CO, Jeff Kolb, Blaine, MN and Justin and Wil Kolb, Meadow, SD; great grandson, Brock Telkamp, Centennial, CO; her brother C.L. O’Rourke, Belle Fourche, SD; her sisters, Isabel O’Rourke, Tacoma, WA, and Rose (George) Seiler, McIntosh, SD; Brothers -in-law, Albert (Bernice) Kolb, Spokane, WA, Herb (Jessie) Kolb, Lemmon, SD, Walter (Janette) Kolb, Spearfish, SD; sisters-in-law, Alama O’Rourke, Bison, SD, and Edna Martin, Spearfish, SD; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband Ted; her parents, W.J. and Rosa O’Rourke; and brothers, William, Lawrence, Robert, Daniel, and Silas O’Rourke.

Visitation will be Monday, December 17 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church followed by a Rosary/Vigil service at 7:00 p.m.

Marie E. Mayer
March 3, 1917 - December 11, 2012

Marie Mayer, age 95 of Mott, passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Society in Mott, ND.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am MT Saturday, December 15, at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, south of Richardton. Fr. Charles Zins will officiate with burial in St. Stephen’s Catholic cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday, December 14, from 1:00 to 7:00 pm MT at Evanson-Jenson Funeral Home in Mott with a Rosary Service at 7:00 pm MT at the funeral home.

Serving as Active Casketbearers are Darren and Kelly Granaas, Mark and Derek Mayer, Christopher and Nicholas Herner, Brock, Cody, and Dustin Schulz. Serving as Honorary Bearers are Jamie Hilt, Bret and Whitney Mayer, Makalla Goode, and Samantha Schulz.

A memorial has been established to St. Stephen’s Catholic Church.

Marie Elisabeth Kelsch was born March 3, 1917 on the Kelsch Family homestead in rural Stark County south of Richardton, ND to Peter and Margaret (Kilzer) Kelsch. She was raised on the family homestead and educated in country schools south of Richardton, receiving a high school diploma through correspondence school.

During World War II, she moved to Seattle WA to work for Boeing as a “Rosie the Riveter.” Returning home in 1945, she worked various jobs until she married Joseph P. Mayer on September 23, 1947. Together on their family farm, the couple raised their nine children – their “crown jewels.” The strength of this family was celebrated each summer with their reunion at the Farm.

Marie was active in St. Stephen’s Church. She was an expert hand quilter and seamstress, a great Hungarian cook and an avid gardener. Marie had a lifelong appreciation of the arts, enjoying painting, music and concerts, plays and festivals, especially Hoste Fest. She was a voracious reader, loved crossword puzzles and playing cards. She loved genealogy and spent countless hours researching at local churches, archiving at the ND Heritage Center, and corresponding with relatives in Europe. Marie enjoyed traveling, highlighted by a trip through several countries in Europe in 2003 and especially enjoyed the country road trips with her “girls” in the summertime, always saying “you can’t get lost in ND.”

Marie will be dearly missed by her nine children and their spouses including Dan and Donna Mayer, Sturgis, SD; Rosalee and Pete Granaas, Tucson, AZ; Joe and Glee Mayer, Minot, ND; Marie and Bill Sampson, S. Weymouth, MA; Rebecca and Lester Herner, Fargo, ND; Pat Mayer and Larry Schmidt, Mandan, ND; Jolene and Marv Schulz, Edgeley, ND; and Roger, Fargo, ND; 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Eleanor Summers, Dickinson, ND and two sisters-in-law, Mary Frank, Mott, ND and Lena Kelsch, Lefor, ND.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph P. Mayer, on September 27, 2001, her son Paul Mayer on December 9, 2010; 7 sisters, Bertha Portscheller, Anna Mayer, Katherine Harle, Carolyn Schuld, Emma Schiff, Agnes Seiler, and Evelyn Riesinger, and 2 brothers, Peter Kelsch and Joseph Kelsch.

Irene Heuer
(December 24, 1928 - December 10, 2012)

Irene Heuer, age 83 of Haynes, ND, passed away on Monday evening, December 10, 2012 at the St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck.

Memorial service will be held on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Centennial Chapel of Evanson Jensen Funeral Homes in Hettinger, ND. Her son, Rev. Larry Wagner will officiate and the burial of her ashes will be in the spring of 2013 at the Haynes cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Chapel.

Irene Richau was born on December 24, 1928 to Pauline (Janke) and Matthew Richau in Golden Valley, ND. She had six siblings, brothers, Walter, John, Arnold, Alvin, and Norman, and one sister, Violet. Irene grew up and attended school in Golden Valley.

Irene had five children, Larry, Linda, Lynn, Lester and Loretta. She loved to cook, bake, have family gatherings, gardening, plants, and her two dogs, Josie and Dewey. She loved spending time with her children and grand kids.

On Monday evening, December 10, 2012, Irene Heuer passed away in Bismarck, ND at St. Alexius Medical Center.

Irene is survived by her children, Larry (Chris) Wagner, of Thousand Oakes, CA; Linda Mosbrucker, of South Heart, ND; Lynn (Janette) Wagner, of Old Forge, PA; Loretta Wagner Kuntz (Al), of Haynes, ND, her daughter-in-law, Jill Wagner, of Shasta Lake, CA and numerous nieces and nephews, 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and 1 sister, and 1 son, Lester Wagner.

Shane Allan Bahm
November 1, 1985 - December 3, 2012

Mass of Christian Burial for Shane Bahm, age 27, of West Fargo, ND formerly of Carson, ND area will be at 9:30 a.m. MST on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Carson, ND. Fr. Gary Benz will officiate with burial to follow in the Carson Community cemetery.

Shane was born November 1, 1985 in Bismarck, ND to Allan and Joan (Hertz) Bahm. He was raised on a farm near Carson, ND and graduated from Carson High School. He attended Moorhead State University, Moorhead, MN, where he played football and worked toward a business degree. He married Ann Sirek July 11, 2009 at Cottage Grove, MN. They made their home in the Fargo area. He was employed by Prairie Supply of Fargo.

Shane was a very outgoing person who loved people and sports, especially the Atlanta Falcons. He was a softball pitcher, and was a very knowledgeable movie buff. He had a special ability to cheer people up just by entering the room. Shane loved his two little dogs, Rocky & Kano, that he called "my boys".

Shane passed away on Monday, December 3, 2012 at Essentia Health in Fargo, ND.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; parents, Allan and Joan Bahm, Flasher, ND; three sisters, Ashley (Benjamin) Bercier, Bismarck, ND, Tasheena (Josh) Meyer, Flasher, ND, Courtney Bahm, Mandan, ND; one nephew, Jace, and two nieces, Brinley and Harper; grandparents, Arlene Bahm, Shields, ND, Virgil and Patsy Hertz, Carson, ND; father-in-law, Richard (Christina) Sirek, Cottage Grove, MN; mother-in-law, Mary Hodgin, St. Paul, MN; two sisters-in-law, Sara (Brent) Nelson, River Falls, WI, Casandra Sirek, Cottage grove, MN; brother-in-law, Jacob Sirek, Cottage Grove, MN; many aunts, uncles and cousins, including a very close and special cousin, Brady Laub, Fargo.

Shane was preceded in death by his cousins, Andrew Hertz and Emily Hertz.

A Rosary/Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. CST (6:30 p.m. MST) on Friday evening, December 7, 2012 at the Bismarck Funeral Home in Bismarck, ND.

Dr. Charles "Chuck"/"Charlie" Uecker, D.V.M.
(August 22, 1925 - December 1, 2012)

Funeral services for Dr. Charles F. Uecker, 87, longtime Hettinger Veterinarian will be Friday, December 7, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hettinger Lutheran Church with Pastor Kathleen Dettmann officiating. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow at the Hettinger cemetery. Visitations will be Thursday, December 6 from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Centennial Chapel of Evanson Jensen Funeral Homes.

Dr. Charles "Charlie/Chuck/Doc" Uecker, age 87, passed away peacefully December 1st, 2012 at Western Horizons Care Center, Hettinger ND, where he had lived for the past eight months. Though incapable of speaking during his last hours of life, he was able of have communion with his family before his death.

He was born August 22, 1925 in Dickinson ND to Theodore, Sr., and Nanette Conner Uecker. Charles helped support his family during the depression by starting to work at the Coca Cola Bottling Plant in Dickinson at age 9. During the summers, he worked at various ranches including the HT Ranch south of Medora.

At age 17, Charles enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served as a private first class with the 5th Marine Division, Company D, Second Battalion, 27th Regiment, which was one of the units that spearheaded the invasion of Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945 during WWII. Only 94 of the 248 men of his company survived the invasion. Charles was honorably discharged 5/8/1946 and received a Presidential Citation for his military service.

After Iwo Jima, he was assigned to help care for Japanese Cavalry horses during the American occupation of Japan. There Charles was influenced to become a veterinarian by a Japanese Cavalry Officer. Upon returning from the military, he attended undergraduate college at Dickinson State University and Montana State University and then went on to earn his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University in 1954.

Charles married Edna L. Bentz on February 19, 1950 in Dickinson and they moved to Hettinger, ND after graduation from Colorado State.

In 1961, he opened the West River Veterinary Clinic, which was the first accredited large animal veterinary clinic in North Dakota. He served on the North Dakota Board of Animal Health, the North Dakota State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, and held all state offices of the North Dakota Veterinary Medical Association, including president. He served as a delegate to the American Veterinary Medical Association and was a Lifetime Honorary Member of the Veterinary Medical Association. In 1985, Charles was chosen North Dakota Veterinarian of the year. During his career, he published a number of articles in professional journals, and was a guest speaker for topics related to large animal surgery and medicine at area/state and national professional meetings. After retiring from regular practice in 1993, Charles worked for the State of North Dakota as the State Veterinarian in 1995 and again in 1997.

Active in the Hettinger Lutheran Church, Charles served at times in most of the church offices and taught Sunday school several years. He was a Boy Scout Leader and was active with the Hettinger Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, American Legion, and the Dickinson Elks.

Chuck led a very active life. He loved the outdoors, hunting pheasants, ducks, and geese and would be out with his dogs and friends almost every day of the hunting season. He enjoyed reading, especially history. He built one of the largest model railroad lay outs in North Dakota in the basement his home. He loved planting and gardening and was awarded the Outstanding Agriculturists Award from NDSU in 1993.

He was a great father and devoted husband, still writing love notes to Edna several months before his death. Charles and Edna took care of their severely disabled daughter, Sherida, at home for 35 years. He will be remembered for trying to get the family interested in hunting, horseback riding, camping, gardening, and cleaning the horse barn. He was also known for having lots energy and drive, a great sense of humor, the gift of gab, and screaming during horror movies to scare the kids.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Sr. and Nan Uecker, sister, Betty Nan Watson and daughter, Sherida. He is survived by his wife Edna, daughter Korliss (Jerry Grossman), son, Jonathan, grand children Elijah Uecker, Katya Grossman, and Gabriel Uecker, brothers, Ted (Nancy), and Jack (Clover), and numerous nieces and nephews.
