Marguerite Maddock
Marguerite F. Maddock, 86, longtime Mandan resident, and recently a resident of St. Vincent's Care Center, Bismarck, passed away March 18, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery followed by a family reception at 3 p.m. St. Joseph's Catholic School cafeteria.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughters of America rosary will be held at 4 p.m. and a parish vigil will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon at Weigel Funeral Home.
Marguerite was born Nov. 4, 1914, in Mandan, to Joseph B. and Susan (Haider) Fredericks. Marguerite graduated from Mandan High School in 1932. She won the N.D. state typing championship in 1932, was private secretary for Governor William Langer and was secretary of the Board of Pardons.
On June 9, 1938, Marguerite married Dore P. Maddock in Lakeview, Ore. Marguerite also worked at First National Bank and State Unemployment Office in Mandan, and then as secretary for the president of Dakota National Bank (Norwest Bank/Wells Fargo) in Bismarck where she became one of the first women officers in the state, assistant vice president, in 1972. After 25 years of service, Marguerite retired from Norwest Bank in 1979.
Following her retirement Marguerite remained very active with St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mandan as lector and eucharistic minister. She distributed communion to shut-ins, lead the rosary and Sunday prayer services at Mandan Care Center and hosted a bible study group regularly.
Marguerite enjoyed the many hours she spent in serving others and was regularly recognized publicly for her volunteerism, receiving Volunteer of the Month and J.C. Penney Golden Rule awards. She also worked with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and served on the Board of Directors of Mandan Golden Age Service and acted as its treasurer for many years.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary L. and Michele Maddock, Olathe, Kan., Patrick D. and Sue Maddock, Mandan, and Paul J. and Debbie Maddock, Bismarck; one daughter, Gay S. House, Bismarck; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dore; one infant son, Dore Girard; her parents; one brother, Michael Fredericks; and two sisters, Ermina Kidd and Gertrude Mushik.
Elizabeth Marquart
ESMOND -- Elizabeth Marquart, 85, Esmond, died March 18, 2001, in a Rugby medical center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Esmond. Burial will be held at a later date in the church cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Bennie; three brothers, Mike Fritel, Esmond, Nick Fritel, Rugby, and Conrad Fritel, Stanley; and four sisters, Lena Ripplinger, Longview, Wash., Anna Mary Olderbak, Grand Forks, Catherine Rohrer, Devils Lake, and Phyllis Salwey, Williston. Gottlieb Oster
Gottlieb Oster, 95, Bismarck, died March 19, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Joel Sherer officiating. Burial will be in Glueckstal Cemetery, Tappen.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Gottlieb was born March 15, 1906, the son of Christian and Katherina (Wanner) Oster, in Eureka, S.D. He was raised and educated south of Tappen. Gottlieb married Hertha Rosina Werre Nov. 13, 1928. They farmed south of Tappen from 1928 to 1950. In 1951 they moved to Bismarck, where Gottlieb worked for the N.D. State Highway Department until he retired in 1971. After his retirement he worked 15 years for Dakota Welding part-time.
Gottlieb was a member of Faith Lutheran Church for 50 years. He enjoyed fishing, card playing and watching softball. He will be missed by his family, neighbors, friends and caregivers.
He is survived by his children, Harry and JoAnn Oster, Lorraine and Clayton Maw, Arthur and Jeanette Oster, Delores and Leo Dockter, and Shirley and Glenn Schulz, all of Bismarck, Vernon and Linda Oster, Little Rock, Ark., and Deborah Oberlander and Randy Diede, Bismarck; 30 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Reinhold Oster, Jamestown, John and Irene Oster, Salem, Ore., and Phyllis Oster, Wilton; two sister and one brother-in-law, Emma and Karl Berg, Bismarck, and Lydia Schmidt, Jamestown; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hertha, in April 1998; one daughter, Irene Chmielewski; two great-grandchildren, Daniel Cole Lacher and Amanda Nicole Coggins; one brother, Fred; and one sister, Ida Morris.
Gertha Pfennig
Gertha Pfennig, 78, Bismarck, died March 19, 2001, in a Bismarck care center.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jim Sorenson officiating.
Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, where a celebration of life service for family and friends will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Gertha was born March 2, 1923, in rural Zap, to Adolph and Pauline (Singer) Weigum.
She attended rural schools north of Beulah and Hazen.
Gertha attended Christy Beauty College and was a cosmetologist for 15 years.
Gertha married Walter Pfennig Aug. 31, 1941, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, north of Beulah.
While Walter was in the Army during WWII, Gertha lived in California, Mississippi and Louisiana.
When Walter was discharged, they moved back to North Dakota in 1945 where Gertha became a cosmetologist. Gertha loved gardening, cooking, crafts and family gatherings.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Walter; one daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Mark Maher, Bismarck; seven sisters, Alma Sommer, Hazen, Leona Jergen and Gladys Schauer, both of Denver, Colo., Caroline Shaw and Sally Speidel, both of Bismarck, Shirley Burner, Helena, Mont., and Gertha's twin, Hertha Reinhardt, Zap; and three brothers, Raymond and Leonard Weigum, both of Beulah, and Clifford Weigum, Zap.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Eleanora Weigum.
Casper Piatz
SANBORN -- Casper Piatz, 84, Sanborn, died March 18, 2001, in a Valley City care center.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sanborn.
Burial will be held at a later date in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Esther; three sons, John, Sanborn, George, Valley City, and Bernard, Cooperstown; two daughters, Margaret Pelzman, Ada, Minn., and Karen Aus, Sanborn; 26 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Joseph, Stanton, and George, Everett, Wash. Marion Pulver
Marion G. Pulver, 105, Bismarck, formerly of Dickinson, died March 18, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Thursday at Dickinson United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Scott McKirdy officiating.
Burial will be in Dickinson Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. MST today at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Marion G. Gaston was born May 15, 1895, in Sewickley, Pa., the daughter of John Fletcher Gaston and Mary Isabelle (Seville) Gaston.
They moved to Mt. Vernon, Iowa, where she graduated from Cornell College Academy in 1914, and Cornell College in 1918.
Marion taught at the Iowa School for the Blind in Dysart, Iowa, for one year.
Marion married LeRoy G. Pulver June 14, 1922, at Mt. Vernon, Iowa.
They lived in Evanston, Ill., for two years while LeRoy attended Northwestern University.
The Pulvers moved to East Bank, W.V., and then to Hastings, Neb., where they spent three years each while LeRoy taught school.
In 1931, Marion and her family moved to Dickinson, where LeRoy spent a 32-year teaching career at Dickinson State College.
LeRoy died in 1981, at which time Marion moved to Bismarck to live with her daughter. She enjoyed knitting, and while in her 100s she knitted 67 childrens' sweaters to donate to the Salvation Army. She also enjoyed reading.
She is survived by one daughter, Patricia (Arlie) Burgess, Bismarck; five granddaughters, Vicki (Pat) Peake, Donna (Terry) Gulka, Barb Binstock, Gayle (Wade, also Marion's stepgrandson) Burgess and Marla Schiermeister; one stepgranddaughter, Claudia Jahraus; seven great-grandchildren, Michel (Jacy) Burgess, Eric Burgess, Kari (Mark) Roles, Jeff Binstock, Marisa Schiermeister, Vicki Schiermeister and Enrique Gulka; two step-great-grandchildren, Sarah and Matthew Jahraus; two great-great-grandchildren, Kylee Little and Noah Burgess; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Gaston, Kalamazoo, Mich., and Helen C. Gaston, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four nieces; and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy; one infant daughter, Betty Virginia; one grandson, Charles Delaney; three brothers, F. Seville Gaston, Samuel Gaston and John F. Gaston; one sister-in-law, Olive Gaston; one niece; and one nephew.
Russell Sabot
BALDWIN -- Russell E. Sabot, 76, Baldwin, died March 17, 2001, at his home.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Edwin Wehner officiating.
Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a rosary and vigil will be held at 8 p.m.
Russell was born June 3, 1924, north of Bismarck, the son of Emil and Frances Sabot.
He was raised and educated in the Bismarck area.
He served in the U.S. Navy from Dec. 22, 1943, to June 4, 1946.
He served in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres on the U.S.S. Wainwright.
Russell married Eunice Turnbow June 28, 1948, in Bismarck.
He farmed in the Baldwin area for many years.
He also worked in the ASC office, Farmers Union and Federal Crop Insurance before retiring.
Russell enjoyed his grandchildren, fishing, hunting, traveling and gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Eunice; his four daughters and their families, Renee Walery and her husband Steve, Bismarck; Deb Matzke and her husband Rick, Bismarck, and their two sons, and one daughter-in-law and friend, Doug and Shannon Matzke, Denton, Texas, and Jonathon Matzke and Maria, Minneapolis, Minn.; Robyn Schafer and her husband Mike, Bismarck, and their three daughters, Andrea and Jeremy Feldman, Bismarck, and Becky and Heather Schafer, Dickinson; and Cheryl Bechtle and her husband John and their two children Emily and Josh, all of Bismarck; and one great-granddaughter, Tayler Feldman.
He is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Pat Sabot, Washburn, and Donald and Eileen Sabot, Bismarck; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Lavern and Ted Weber, Seattle, Beva Jean Hoffman, Bismarck, and Patty and Ed Backer, Mandan; one brother-in-law, Harold Mowder, Menahga, Minn.; special friends, Darrell and Sandy Baisch, Bismarck, and their two children, Krista Artis and her husband Joe and their two children Jordon and Jake, and Jeff Baisch, Salt Lake City; and special neighbor and caregiver, Gerry Ann Small and her husband Gary, Baldwin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Frances Sabot; two sisters, Gladys Fox and Doris Mowder; two brothers, Virgil and Darrell Sabot; and one stepgrandson, Brent Schafer.
Gladys Sand
VALLEY CITY -- Gladys Sand, 90, Valley City, formerly of McClusky, died March 20, 2001, in a Valley City care center.
Arrangements are pending with Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

MCCLUSKY -- Adolph Schaeffer, 84, McClusky, died March 18, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital.

Charles Young
Charles E. Young, 67, Grand Junction, Colo., formerly of Mott and Bismarck, died March 15, 2001, at his home.
A private memorial service was held March 18 at his home. Cremation is taking place.
Burial will be held at a later date in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; two daughters, Kelly Bewer, Palisade, Colo., and Sara Young, Anchorage, Ala.; one brother, Rusty Johnson, Little Rock, Ark.; and one sister, Mana Privitt, Magnolia, Ark. (Callahan-Edfast Mortuary, Grand Junction, Colo.)
