Bertram Johnson
FAIRFIELD -- Bertram Johnson, 89, Fairfield, died May 4, 2000 at his daughter's home in Belfield. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at Belfield Lutheran Church. Burial will be in St. Jacob's Cemetery, near Gorham. He is survived by his three chidlren, Curt, South Heart, Larry, Belfield, and Sherri O'Brien, Belfield; one sister, Geraldine Nelson, Miles City, Mont.; two brothers, Zach, Salmon, Idaho, and Loering, Tariffville, Conn.; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Hugh E. Mangskau
Hugh E. Mangskau, 94, 114 South Third St., Bismarck, died May 5, 2000 in a local hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at Eastgate Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Rick Fossum of McCabe United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at Eastgate Funeral Service from 1-5 p.m. today and one hour prior to the service on Monday. H. E. Mangskau was born on Jan. 22, 1906 in Minneapolis, the son of Eugene and Jenny Mangskau of Breckenridge, Minn. He graduated from Breckenridge High School and the North Dakota State School of Science at Wahpeton before finding work in 1927 with Northern Power and Light Company. Following short-term employment to earn necessary funds, he returned to school and received his degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1931. Following graduation, he joined Dakota Public Service Company and worked in Mobridge, S.D. where he married Helen Lawien in 1938. In 1945, Dakota Public Service was purchased by Montana-Dakota Utilities Company and in 1946, he moved to Bismarck and worked in various positions for MDU, serving as general superintendent of transmission and distribution for many years prior to his retirement in 1970. During retirement, he spent summers at a lake cabin in central Minnesota, where he enjoyed fishing. Fall would find him on the North Dakota prairies in pursuit of pheasant, grouse, ducks and geese. He was sixty-year member of the IBEW, a member of Masonic Lodge 132, Chapter 11 of the Order of Eastern Star, and McCabe United Methodist Church. Following the fall of 1994, he moved into the Karrington in Bismarck, where he resided up until his death. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, David and Kathleen, Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents and one sister, Esther. The family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society.
Reuby Merbach
NEW LEIPZIG -- Reuby "Viola" Merbach, 93, New Leipzig, formerly of Drake, died May 4, 2000 in an Elgin care center. Services will be held at 9 a.m. MDT Tuesday, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, New Leipzig, with the Rev. John Amundson officiating. Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. CDT Tuesday, at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Drake. Visitation will be from 8 a.m.-9 p.m. MDT Monday at Hertz Brothers Funeral Home, New Leipzig and at the church from 8 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service. Reuby Viola Kraft was born on Dec. 16, 1906 at Turtle Lake to Emmit and Reuby (Spaulding) Kraft. She graduated from Turtle Lake High School in 1925. She then taught at a country school near Coleharbor for one year. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from Bismarck Evangelical School of Nursing in the fall of 1929. She worked as a nurse in Nashville, Tenn., for one year and then moved to Drake where she worked at the Drake Hospital as a registered nurse. On April 30, 1933, she married Chris Merbach at Trinity Lutheran Church, Drake. The couple farmed near Drake until their retirement in 1975-1976. Chris died on Aug. 10, 1991. She continued to reside in Drake for two years, and then moved to Bismarck to be near her brother and sisters. In July of 1999, she moved to the New Leipzig Economic Development Housing. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Drake, where she actively participated in Bible Study, Circle, Ladies Aid, taught Sunday School, and was a former Superintendent of the Sunday School, was a member of the Church Quilting Group, Library Guild of Drake Public School, and of the Homemaker Women's Group. In Bismarck, she attended McCabe United Methodist Church where she belonged to the Tuesday morning Workshop and Esther Circle of the United Methodist Women. She is survived by three sons, Paul (Marilyn) Merbach, Saxonburg, Penn., Lawrence "Larry" (Renelle Bertsch) Merbach, Wahpeton, and Kenneth (Deloris) Merbach, New Leipzig; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons; two brothers, Clinton (Bernice) Kraft, Kansas, Loren (Ruth) Kraft, Mesa, Ariz., and two sisters, Emma Peightal, Bismarck, Maxine Buehler, Bismarck; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Kraft, Bremerton, Wash., Lori Kraft, Bismarck; many nieces and nephews; and a special family friend, Kathy Merbach, Uhrichsville, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chris; an infant daughter, Dardis Jean; one sister, Margaret Edmundson; two brothers, Emmit Kraft and Robert Kraft; and two brothers-in-law, Bryan Edmundson and Roger Buehler. Peter E. Voigt
Peter E. Voigt, 69, 2890 44th Street, Mandan, died May 5, 2000 in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Father Cyprian Meier and the Rev. Tom Richter officiating. Burial will be in Heart River Cemetery, southwest of Mandan. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30 p.m., both at Weigel Funeral Home. Peter was born on Oct. 1, 1930 in Werner, the son of Victor and Madelene (Bosch) Voigt. He was raised and educated in Werner, where his mother taught him first through eighth grades. He also attended Assumption Abby for one year and graduated from Halliday High School in 1948. After high school, Peter ranched with his father and in April 1953, he moved to a ranch southwest of Mandan. On Aug. 25, 1952, Peter married Dawne Dahlen in Dodge. Peter was very outgoing and had many friends. He liked to call his friends early in the morning to make sure that they were ready for the day. He was most comfortable and happy at holiday gatherings with his family. Peter was known as a cowboy at heart. When he was younger, he enjoyed horse breaking. His joy of being outdoors made him an avid hunter with hunting big game and birds. He was known in the area for his saw mill where he had rought cut lumber. He is survived by his wife, Dawne, Mandan; six sons and five daughters-in-law, Arni and Bert, Pat and Bernice, Milo and Tammy, and Luke and friend, Tera Heid, all of Mandan; Owen and Becky, Helena, Mont., and Jay and Lynette, Bismarck; three daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Richard Clarus, Richardton, Valeri and Don Entzel, Mandan, and Becci and Wayne Braun, New Salem; 29 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and double cousins, Ramona Higgins, Roberta and Bob Bosch and many close cousins. Dora Cordes
Dora Cordes, 88, Port Neches, Texas, formerly of Center, died June 5, 2001, in a Nederland, Texas, hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Center, with the Rev. Jon Erickson officiating. Burial will be in Hagerott Cemetery, Center. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue Monday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church. A descendent of Oliver County pioneers, Dora was born Feb. 27, 1913, the daughter of Karl and Susanna Schwalbe. Raised and educated there, she worked as a sales clerk for most of her life and married Henry Cordes on May 8, 1938. They operated a general store in Regent before moving back to Center in 1972. Dora was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by one son, D.H. Cordes, Tucson, Ariz.; one daughter, Eilene Nolen, Port Neches, Texas; and one sister, Emma Schwalbe, Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, who died April 4, 1999; one daughter, Doris Kay; her parents; one sister, Helen Binker; and four brothers, Fred, Raynold, Albert and Walter Schwalbe.

Arthur Frey
HEBRON -- Arthur F. Frey, 88, Hebron, died June 7, 2001, in the Richardton health center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Monday at First Baptist Church, Hebron, with the Rev. David Ling officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. MDT Sunday at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Arthur F. Frey, the son of Frederick and Rosina (Hoersch) Frey, was born Jan. 7, 1913, in Glen Ullin. He was raised and attended school in Hebron. Arthur married Louise Heinle on Oct. 1, 1939, in Hebron. Following their marriage the couple lived in Hebron, where he worked for the railroad and later for Urban's Implement Company for 35 years, retiring in 1975. After his retirement he served as a bus driver for Hebron School for five years. Arthur was a member of First Baptist Church of Hebron and was also an avid fisherman. He is survived by his wife, Louise; his children, Darlene Siewert, Richardton, James Frey, Bismarck, and Doris Rolek, Fridley, Minn.; seven granddaughters; four great-grandsons; and one sister, Caroline Jerdee, Hayward, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; and four sisters.

Jonathan Schlax
Memorial services for Jonathan J. Schlax, 22, Minneapolis, Minn., formerly of Bismarck, were held June 8 at Peterson-Stohlberg Nokomis Park Chapel, Minneapolis. Jon was a 1997 graduate of Bismarck High School and was a student of the University of Minnesota and Brown Institute. He touched many in his short life. His smile will be forever missed. He is survived by his parents, James and Barbara Schlax; three sisters, Jenny, Tracy and Mindy; two nieces, Haylee and Mira; his girlfriend, Kara; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Jane Wasilewski and William Schlax; and one uncle, Joseph Wasilewski Jr.
John Schmidt
John H. Schmidt, 87, Bismarck, died June 5, 2001, in a local care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, with military rites provided by VFW Post 1326. Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday. There will be no visitation at the church. John was born May 13, 1914, in Fallon, the son of Heronemus and Bertha (Gratz) Schmidt. He was raised and educated in the Fallon and New Salem areas. The family moved east of Bismarck before moving into Bismarck. He worked for the Oscar H. Will Seed House before entering the U.S. Army in 1941, where he served in the Pacific theater. He received an honorable discharge in 1945. On Feb. 5, 1946, he married Ruth L. Gebhardt at Church of St. Mary in Bismarck. He worked at Sweetheart Bakery, Park Hill Nursery and was a custodian for Provident Life Insurance and J.C. Penney. He retired from J.C. Penney as the head custodian after 23 years of service. John was an avid gardener and very proud of his yard and gardens. He enjoyed trimming trees and hedges; his yard was always immaculate. He loved to dance, bowl, play cards and work crossword and jigsaw puzzles. He became a Minnesota Twins fan in 1961 and missed very few games on the radio or TV. John couldn't read music but he could play the accordion very well and did so for many barn dances; he especially liked polka music. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Brenda Schmidt and James and Rose Schmidt, all of Bismarck, and Richard and Rhonda Schmidt, Mesa, Ariz.; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Jo and Tony LaPlante, Golden Valley, Minn.; eight grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Rose and Jim Hyland and Betty and Ray Koffler, all of Bismarck; one brother and sister-in-law, Anton "Tony" and Thelma Schmidt, Billings, Mont.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Anthony; his parents; and three brothers, Jack, Joe and Matt. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to research for macular degeneration.
