Cora Elma Stenstadvold
Her children announce the passing of Cora Elma Stenstadvold on March 11, 2001, at a care center in Boise, Idaho. She was 79 years old. A private ceremony was held in the Boise family home on March 18th. Cora was preceded in death by six siblings and her first born son James. Surviving children are Ken Eulert and Timothy Stenstadvold, Santa Ysabel, California, Kenneth Stenstadvold, Lovelady, Texas and Karma Kutkuhn, Boise, Idaho. Additionally she is survived by 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren (counting the expected birth in June).
Cora was born in Dietz, Wyoming on September 12, 1921. Her father and brothers worked as coal miners. Cora grew up around the mining towns in Wyoming and Montana. Spending summers near Ten-Sleep Wyoming was a favorite part of her childhood. She enjoyed her high school years and was proud to become a telephone operator in Chicago after graduation. During those war years, long-distance operators were as beloved as nurses, for helping families connect with their loved ones. She had many touching stories from that career, and was proud of receiving a National Commendation for Service Award for on the job heroics.
In Chicago Cora met a Navy man from South Dakota, Leonard Stenstadvold. They were married in Chicago in 1945. James was born there in 1947. In 1948 Cora and Leonard started their farm life in Pettibone, North Dakota. Four more children joined the family. Everyone worked hard until the farm was sold in 1966 and the family moved to San Diego, Ca. Three years later, newly divorced, Cora's third career began when she became a Certified Nurses Aide and began working at a local skilled nursing facility. She changed from nursing to administration and became the much-loved receptionist of that 400-bed facility. She retired in 1984 after suffering 2 strokes. She regained her strength and lived independently in San Diego until 1997 when she moved to Boise, Idaho. The last several years of Cora's life were a great joy to her, living across the courtyard from Karma and family, where she enjoyed daily involvement with grandchildren Justin, age 13, and Gaia, age 4.
Cora is lovingly remembered for her sense of humor and readiness to laugh, especially at herself. She loved her family. She enjoyed cooking for people on special occasions. She took pleasure in tending her plants. She was fond of her seasonal visitors, the hummingbirds, who knew that "the food was sweet on Idaho Street." Cora also loved the San Diego Padres passionately. From their first years to Cora's last, she followed each season with the same dedication as to overseeing her family.
Cora's children are grateful for the care she was given by her doctors and their staff, St. Lukes Hospital, and by the loving staff at Valley View Rehabilitation Center.
