Viola Finck
NAPOLEON -- Viola Finck, 76, Napoleon, died April 29, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, Napoleon. Burial will be in the city cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Raymond; one daughter, Diane Mitzel, Washington, D.C.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Freida Finck, Lehr, and Lydia Weisz, Jamestown; and one brother, Leo Kienzle, Jamestown. Martha Kavaney
Martha Kavaney, 97, Bismarck, died April 29, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center Chapel, 2425 Hillview Ave., Bismarck, with the Rev. Dale Nabben, officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from noon to 8 pm today and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and for one hour before services at the care center. Martha was born on June 3, 1903, in Venturia, the daughter of Phillip and Karolina (Mueller) Heupel. In 1914 the family moved to a farm near Wishek where Martha grew up and attended school. In 1925 she graduated from Bismarck Business College and went to work at the McKenzie Bank until 1928 when she went to work as a secretary and bookkeeper for Bismarck Motor Company. In 1930 Martha opened "The Okay Confectionary" on the corner of Seventh Street and Thayer Avenue. This was a popular gathering place for young people who enjoyed the soda fountain and Coney Islands served there. Many of her former customers have stayed in touch with her through the years. On February 14, 1949, Martha married William "Bill" Kavaney. The following November they opened "Heup's Hotel" and from that location also formed "Kavaney Real Estate Company." They were part owners of Northbrook Shopping Center. They sold the Confectionary in 1962 and the hotel in 1970. In 1985 she sold her interest in Northbrook Shopping Center. Bill Kavaney died in July of 1973. Martha was a shrewd businesswoman with a great sense of humor and quick wit. At the time of her death she was a part owner of Gateway Commons Commercial Lots. Besides her business interests, she loved to play bridge. She liked to crochet and do other crafts that she donated to various charities and gave to friends and relatives. She is survived by one sister, Lillian Allison, Bismarck; and a host of nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents; eight brothers; and five sisters.

Beverly Klassen
Beverly J. Klassen, 65, Bismarck, died April 28, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hendrum, Minn. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Korsmo Funeral Home, Moorhead, Minn., where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Bev was born May 31, 1935, in Ada, Minn., to Gilman and Hilda Hagen. She grew up and attended school in Hendrum, Minn. She was united in marriage to Victor Klassen Oct. 8, 1955, in Fargo. They resided in the Fargo area until 1989, when they moved to Bismarck. Bev's greatest joy in life was spending time with her children and grandchildren, whom she was always there for. She especially enjoyed traveling the United States and overseas to be with all her family. Some of her interests were sewing, bowling and gardening. She also enjoyed doing numerous volunteer work. She is survived by her husband, Vic; two daughters and and three sons, Val (Dennis) Nedrebo, Argusville, Minn., Kelly (Dan) Stras, Ulen, Minn., Kevin Klassen, Marana, Ariz., Bret (Mary) Klassen, ,Incirlik AFB, Turkey, and Dana Klassen, Fargo; 10 grandchildren, Nicholas, Stephanie and Brittany Nedrebo, Amy and Andrew Klassen, Jennifer, Anne, John and Joseph Stras and Kurtis Klassen; and one sister, Linda (Robert) Hoff, Perley, Minn. She was preceded in death by one grnadchild, Mathew; her parents; one brother, Gene; and one nephew, Shawn.

Oswald Lura
BARLOW -- Oswald M. Lura, 72, Barlow, died April 28, 2001, in a Harvey medical center. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Stavanger Cemetery, rural Cathay. He is survived by five sons, Oswald Jr., Mariposa, Calif., Douglas, Carrington, Wade, Cathay, Robin, Barlow, and Anthony, Hemet, Calif.; five daughters, Vicki Lura, Auberry, Calif., Dawn Munson, Grace City, Auralee Pyle, Blythe, Calif., Loralee Holt, Lake Elsinore, Calif., and Paula Lura, Ahawahnce, Calif., ; 31 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Edwin, Barlow; four sisters, Leona Spoden, Lombard, Ill., Olive Froelich, Waterloo, Iowa, Esther Jensen, Centralia, Calif., and Leila Heinitz, Barlow. Leonard Schuchard, 87, Bismarck, died April 29, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending with Bismarck Funeral Home.

Richard Schultz
BEULAH -- Richard Schultz, 53, Beulah, died April 29, 2001, at his home following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Beulah, with the Rev. Charles Zins officiating. A second service will be held at 11:30 a.m. CDT Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Galena, Ill. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena, Ill. Visitation will be held from 3 to 6:30 p.m. MDT today at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah, followed by a wake service at 8 p.m. MDT at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Richard was born Aug. 2, 1947, in Galena, Ill., to Marvin and Helen (Rosenthal) Schultz. He attended school in Galena and graduated from West Grant High School in Wisconsin. In 1966, he began working at the Apple River Chemical Plant at East Dubuque, Ill. On Oct. 1, 1966, he married Darlene Werner in Galena. In August 1983, they moved to Beulah and Richard began working at Dakota Gasification Plant, where he worked until becoming ill. Richard was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Beulah and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Richard enjoyed hunting with his friends and made numerous trips to Colorado to hunt elk. He was drawn and was successful in a once-in-a-lifetime elk hunt in North Dakota. He also enjoyed fishing, woodworking and traveling and was a handyman around the house. Richard loved spending time with his family, and his grandchildren, Nicholas and Amity, were his pride and joy. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Darlene; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and David Blohm, Beulah; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Amity Blohm; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Jim Schultz, Ferryville, Wis., and Marvin and Joanne Schultz, Scales Mound, Ill.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Sharon and Larry Dahman and Deb and Dave Walz, all of Prairie du Chien, Wis., and Corrine and Ted Haas, Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; one stepbrother, Donald and Judi Wall, Holmen, Wis.; two stepsisters, Pat and Ronald Runde and Betsy and Willie Wubben, all of Hazel Green, Wis.; two brothers-in-law, John Werner and Joseph Werner, both of Galena, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin; his mother, Helen; his stepfather, Francis Wall; one sister, Darlene Koehler; and his grandparents. Lyla Sorensen
Lyla R. Sorensen, 75, New Westminster, B.C., Canada, died April 25, 2001, in New Westminster after suffering several strokes during her life. A prayer service will be held at 1 p.m. MDT Wednesday at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson. Burial will be in Ridgeway Cemetery, north of Taylor. She is survived by six children, Robert Sorensen, Lake Wilson, Minn., Norma Jean Ebert, Las Vegas, Nev., Floyd Sorensen and Ricky Sorensen, both of Aurora, Colo., Marlene Sorensen, Black Creek, B.C., Canada, and Charles Sorensen, Maple Ridge, B.C., Canada; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Gordon Myran, Taylor; and three sisters, LaVerne Dubrall, Pico Rivera, Calif., Laura Zweifel, Beresford, S.D., and Margaret Nolte, Hebron.

WEST FARGO -- Wells W. Willyard, 72, West Fargo, died April 29, 2001, in a Fargo medical center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Federated Church, Carrington. Burial will be in the city cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Madelyn; three sons, Joel, Springfield, Mo., Warrren, Portland, Ore., and Wade, Grand Forks; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five sisters, Connie Stevenson, Colorado Springs, Colo., Roxane Billings, Phafftown, N.C., Edythe Dahlen, Lakota, Lynette Cary, San Pedro, Calif., and Susan Brown, Hoople; and four brothers, Jerry, Oelwein, Iowa, Alan and George, both of Carrington, and Jim, Anoka, Minn. Eugene Beechie
Eugene R. Beechie, 71, Mandan, died May 20, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, with military honors by the Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 707 and American Legion Post No. 40. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services at the church. Gene was born March 6, 1930, in Fargo, the son of Ronald H. and Wilma (Miller) Beechie. Raised and educated in Litchville, he graduated from high school there and received a B.S. degree in geology from North Dakota State University. He served as a paratrooper with the rank of First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army 511th Airborne Division from 1953 to 1955. Gene married Shirley N. Olson at Marion on Oct. 22, 1955. Gene was a property and casualty insurance adjuster in Billings, Minneapolis and Bismarck from 1955 to 1989, retiring in 1989 from Royal Insurance, formerly the Milbank Mutual Insurance Company. He was then employed by the North Dakota Historical Society for five years on a newspaper preservation project and later served as a volunteer. Gene will be remembered as a quiet and gentle man who enjoyed visiting with anyone and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Mandan Braves teams. A dedicated member of the M.A.R. (Mandan Athletic and Recreation Club), he was also a member of the Mandan American Legion and Eagles Clubs. He was always a ready volunteer for any Kiwanis project. Gene loved to hunt and fish and spent many happy hours enjoying the company of his sons doing just that. Time spent with Shirley, his children and grandchildren at their lake home was also an important and joyous time in his life. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Scott Hellman, Massillon, Ohio; three sons and daughters-in-law, Barry and Carol, Brent and Kelly and Bruce and Linda, all of Mandan; his mother, Wilma Beechie, Litchville; his mother-in-law, Esther Olson, Litchville; 11 grandchildren, Brian Dever, Derek, Preston, Nicci, Kara, Michael, Tucker and Leanne Beechie, Brooklyn and Grace Hellman and Travis Lee; and his brothers, Brian and his wife Janet, Walla Walla, Wash., and Gary, Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Beechie. In lieu of flowers, Gene's family prefers memorials to the Mandan Kiwanis Club, the M.A.R. Club or the donor's choice.

Arley Bjella
Arley R. Bjella, 84, Minneapolis, Minn., died May 21, 2001. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 4100 Lyndale Ave. S., Minneapolis, Minn. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; two sons, Lance, Minneapolis, Minn., and Brian, Bismarck; one daughter, Bryn Parchman, Baltimore, Md.; six grandchildren; and one brother, Lanceford, Tucson, Ariz. Angeline Bonogofsky
Angeline E. Bonogofsky, 61, Miles City, Mont., formerly of Mandan, died May 20, 2001, in a Miles City care center. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. MDT today at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home, Miles city. Burial will be in the family lot in Custer County Cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Donald and Gary, both of Miles City, Mont.; one daughter, Lisa Pulse, Miles City, Mont.; two grandchildren; two brothers, Matt Pfleger, Florida, and Anton Pfleger, Mandan; and one sister, Eleanora Siegel, Mandan.

Hugo Cole
ELGIN -- Dr. Hugo J. Cole, 66, Elgin, died May 18, 2001, in the Elgin hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. MDT Saturday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elgin. He is survived by his wife, Moza; his children, Helema Cole, Elgin, Carra Cole, Nashville, Tenn., Amelia Cole, Jackson, N.J., Timothy Cole, San Francisco, Calif., Velvet Cole, Knoxville, Tenn., Shannon Cole and Suzanne Register, both of Dallas, Texas, and Sara Cole, Fort Worth, Texas; four grandchildren; three brothers, Henry Jr., Rose Hill, Va., Earl, Knoxville, Tenn., and Donald, Bedford, Texas; and his stepfather, Walter Hawk, Burleson, Texas. Arnold Flath
GARRISON -- Arnold Flath, 75, Garrison, died May 21, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison, with the Rev. Dick Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in the city cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. today at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. Arnold was born Oct. 21, 1925, in Garrison, to Henry and Bertha (Blotter) Flath. He grew up on his parents' farm and attended rural Garrison school. He married Lorraine Eslinger Oct. 2, 1949, in Garrison. They made homes in the Garrison, Coleharbor and Minot areas. Arnold started working at the Truex Coal Mine near Garrison; he then worked four years during the construction of the Garrison Dam and seven years at the Minot Air Force Base constructing houses. He operated his own construction company, working in the Garrison area, for 38 years. Arnold enjoyed construction work and said that every house is different and a challenge; cement work was the hardest part of the projects he did. During the winter months, Arnold found time to do woodworking, making toys for his grandchildren. He also loved playing rounds of golf with his friends in the summer. Arnold was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garrison, the Garrison Golf Association and an honorary member of the Garrison Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; one son and daughter-in-law, Warren and Michell and their children Jill and Jesse and his fiancee Jennifer, all of Bowman; one daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Warren Netolicky and their children Phillip and Paula, all of Fergus Falls, Minn.; two sisters, Clara Mautz, Underwood, and Esther Allers, Garrison; and four brothers, George and Walter, both of California, Gordon, Washington, and Clarence, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Herbert and Willis; and one sister, Helen.

Mable Guy
FARGO -- Mable Leet Guy, 106, Fargo, died May 20, 2001, in a Fargo care center. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany Homes Chapel, Fargo. Mable Guy was born July 30, 1894, near Webster, to Norwegian immigrants, Ole and Margit Leet, who homesteaded in the Webster-Starkweatherarea in the 1880s. Mable married William "Bill" Guy in 1917 after both graduated from North Dakota Agricultural College (NDAC). Mable and Bill began married life in Devils Lake, where her husband was the first agricultural extension agent in Ramsey County. He later served in that position in Cass County. They moved from Fargo to Amenia in 1925, where Bill managed the 26 farms of the Carrie T. Chaffee estate. Following the death of her husband in 1942, Mable moved to Grand Forks and lived there until 1985, when she joined her son Bill and his wife Jean to live with them in Bismarck and later in Fargo. Mable led a very active life. In college, she belonged to Phi Upsilon Omicron and Phi Kappa Phi sororities, and much later, the American Legion Auxiliary. She played the organ for several churches, but she was a member of the United Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. She was also a past matron of Eastern Star. Mable's three sons served in the Navy during World War II, during which time she was active in the Red Cross and served as a nurse's aide. Her son Jim died in a Japanese prison camp after surviving the sinking of the heavy cruiser Houston off the coast of Java. After the war, Mable's young son, John, married Ruth Torine and farmed in southern Minnesota. Her oldest son, Bill Jr., married Jean Mason and farmed at Amenia before serving as governor of North Dakota from 1961 to 1973. Though a latecomer to political activity, Mable was named Democratic-NPL Woman of the Year in 1974. She was also believed to be the oldest living alumna of NDAC. Mable had five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Louis, Henry and Oliver Leet; and her sisters, Olga Tuck, Margaret Wagner and Myrtle Steen.

DICKINSON -- Frank Hepsak, 77, Dickinson, died May 22, 2001, in a Dickinson care center. Arrangements are pending with Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.

Joseph Himmelspach
NEW SALEM -- Joseph Himmelspach, 68, New Salem, died May 22, 2001, at his home. Arrangements are pending with Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Allan Hodges
Allan Hodges, 63, Oklahoma City, Okla., formerly of Garrison, died May 22, 2001, in an Oklahoma City hospital. Arrangements are pending with Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

Margaret Hoerner
Margaret Hoerner, 76, 107 Fourth Ave. N.E., Mandan, died May 21, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital after a brief battle with cancer. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30 p.m. Margaret (Roll) Hoerner was born Jan. 8, 1925, in Burt, the daughter of John and Caroline (Reichert) Roll. She was raised and educated in Burt. On March 4, 1946, she was united in marriage to Florian Hoerner in St. Placidus. After their marriage they moved to Almont, and in 1953 moved to Mandan. She owned and operated her own foster home care for senior citizens in her own home for 45 years. Margaret was a very giving person, always busy taking care of her family and her elderly patients, whom she loved to care for. She had a great love for animals and enjoyed spending time with her three. She enjoyed playing cards, gardening and babysitting for children. Margaret was a member of the Golden Age Club and St. Joseph's Parish. She will be deeply missed by those who survive her, including one son and daughter-in-law, Florian Jr. and Jean, Mandan; three daughters and sons-in-law, Caroline and Thornton Kilen and Shirley and Jerry Meisch, all of Mandan, and Violet and Daron Heim, Bismarck; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank Roll, Dickinson, and Jake Roll, Newcastle, Wyo.; one sister, Catherine Stecker, Billings, Mont.; and a very special friend, her sister-in-law Rosie Roll. She was preceded in death by her husband, Florian, who died Dec. 12, 1994; her parents; three brothers, Ted and Alex Roll and Nick Heinzman; one sister, Julia Ferderer; one niece, Eleanor and her husband Ralph Ferderer.

Clifford Jochim
Clifford M. Jochim, 65, Forest Lake, Minn., died March 21, 2001, in Wyoming, Minn. Services were held March 24 in Forest Lake. Burial was in Maple Grove, Minn. Clifford was born July 21, 1935, to Leo D. and Gladys (Kent) Jochim in Mandan. He served two years in the U.S. Army, attached to the special forces at Fort Lewis, Washington. He graduated from UND Law School in 1961. He is survived by two daughters, Kelly Osowski and Stacy Kadrmas, both of Minneapolis, Minn.; three sons, Steve, Scott and Michael, all of Minneapolis, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; and three sisters, Faye Brewster and Bernice LaDuke, both of Bismarck, and Leota Burns, Mandan. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Lewis L. Jochim.

Donavon LaDuke
Donavon LaDuke, 56, Baxter Springs, Kan., died April 24, 2001, in an accident. Services were held April 29 in Baxter Springs. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; one son, Dustin; two daughters, Delvia and Darla; his mother, Bernice LaDuke, Bismarck; two brothers, Daryl, Casper, Wyo., and Delvin, Flasher; and one sister, Debra Wolf, Jamestown.
