Pearl, the daughter of John and Anna (Kanski) Duma, was born Dec. 31, 1925, in a maternity house in Wilton. She grew up in rural Wilton, graduating from Wilton High School in 1944. Upon graduation, Pearl worked as a bookkeeper for Armour's Creamery in Bismarck. She also was employed as a teller in the Wilton bank. Pearl married Edsel R. Anderson on May 11, 1950. Their plans were to be married at the Sunne Lutheran Church, however, due to a late snowstorm, the ceremony was held at the Presbyterian Church in Wilton. Pearl was actively involved in all aspects of the community. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 52 years. She was a volunteer 4-H leader for 20 years in the Wilton area and also involved in the Girl Scout program. Pearl was a long-time member of the Sunne Lutheran Church and served as treasurer for the Sunne Lutheran Church Women for several years. As a dedicated quilter, Pearl contributed to the churchwomen's mission of sending over 100 quilts each year to the needy. Pearl was a loyal member of the Wilton Alumni Association, serving on the Alumni committee for many years. Pearl's passions were gardening, cooking, community service and family. Many family members and friends have suggested "Grandma Pearl" should start her own business, "Pearl's Pickles, Pyrohy and Pie." She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Joe Brinster, Marietta, Ohio, Deborah and Richard Strand, Wilton, and Karla and Tom Ross, Minot. Pearl was a proud grandmother of six grandchildren, Austin and Aaron Brinster, Lindsey and Kirk Strand and McKenzie and Spencer Ross. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edsel R. She was raised on their homestead for the first several years in a tar paper shanty. Following graduation from Isabel High School in 1946, Madelynn attended nursing school in Bismarck, where she performed at the top of her class. The emotional impact of the death of a pediatric patient of whom she'd become especially fond caused her to leave the program two weeks before graduation. After completing coursework at the teaching college in Spearfish, S.D., Madelynn married William Kitzman and moved to Carson, where he farmed and she taught grades one through eight in a one-room schoolhouse. The first graders were her favorites. Madelynn moved to Bismarck in 1951 and worked for Montgomery Ward as a cashier. She attended Capital Business College in the evenings and was promoted to credit manager. She later joined the North Dakota State Motor Vehicle Department and was promoted to assistant registrar. William Kitzman died in 1966. Madelynn married Edward P. Wohl in 1969 and in that year began to work as a cook at Apple Creek Country Club. Edward Wohl died in 1972. She continued to work at Apple Creek and took several bookkeeping jobs to support her family until she retired in 1977 due to disability. She married Raymond N. Roll in 1974 and he died in 1980. Madelynn's fortitude and hard work sustained her family during many difficult times, and her enduring faith and selfless generosity provided a blessing and example to many. She is survived by four children, Delores (Dee) Farrell and DeVone P. Wohl, both of Bismarck, Dalane W. Kitzman, M.D., Winston-Salem, N.C., and Dale L. Kitzman, Lincoln; six grandchildren, Allysea G. Roe, Michael P. Landenberger, Katelyn E. Kitzman, Nathan R. Wohl, Jordan L. Kitzman and Jesse J. Kitzman; one great-grandchild, Logan J. Pudwill; and four siblings, Oscar L. Heinrich, Absorakee, Mont., Doris Schuh, Isabel, S.D., Zelda Harrison, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Joyce Dressler, Mandan. She was preceded in death by three husbands and her parents. During this celebration, we invite you to renew your own faith today in our Lord Jesus Christ and His gift of everlasting life.
