Herbert Schafer
MINOT -- Herbert W. Schafer, 75, Minot, died Aug. 12, 2001, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Augustana Lutheran Church, Underwood, with the Rev. Dan Maurer officiating. Burial will be in Underwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:30-8 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood. Herbert W. Schafer was born Aug. 4, 1926, at Underwood, to Jacob and Louise (Schempp) Schafer. He attended rural school and graduated from Underwood High School in 1944. He married Elaine Schauer on Sept. 27, 1952, at Turtle Lake. Herb farmed eight miles southwest of Underwood for many years. He retired from farming in 1979. He moved to Phoenix in 1995. In June of 1999, he moved to Minot, where he became a resident of Manor Care. Herb was known for his ability to fix nearly everything. He enjoyed welding and hauling hay bales for area farmers. He also enjoyed playing cards, bingo and dancing to waltzes. He is survived by one son, Curtis, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mavis and Charly Cummings, Plaza, and Ardis and Randy Sullivan, Townsend, Mont.; two grandchildren, Ross and Morgan Cummings; one sister, Viola Leidholm, Washburn; and one aunt, Hulda Schempp, Garrison.

Lourene Christiansen
Lourene C. Christiansen, 89, formerly of Baldwin, died Aug. 14, 2001, in Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Wilton, with the Rev. Paul Schauer officiating. Burial will be in Baldwin Cemetery, Baldwin. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. Lourene C. Englemann was born Aug. 28, 1911, in Alta, the daughter of Karl and Minnie (Spitzer) Englemann. She was raised and educated in the Alta and Baldwin area. Lourene and Lowell Christiansen were married Oct. 11, 1930. They resided on the Christiansen homestead until Dec. 14, 1941, when their home was destroyed by fire while they were in Rochester, Minn., where Lowell was seeking medical treatment. Soon after they purchased the family farm east of Baldwin. After Lowell's death on June 22, 1969, Lourene continued to farm and remained active in the community, serving on many boards and organizations. She moved to Wilton on Aug. 2, 1997, where her most special times were spent visiting over a good cup of coffee with family and friends. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Donna Kelly, Amarillo, Texas, Marlys and Leonard Olson, Regan, and Patricia and Ronald Andahl, Bismarck; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Lyle Christiansen and Russell and Joyce Christiansen, all of Bismarck; her grandchildren, Kallene (Sam) Purl, Terri (Layne) Allen, Paul (Carla) Olson, Loren (Tami) Olson, James (Karla) Olson, Mark (Tina) Olson, Renee (Oren) Danielson, Leann Tschider, Ricky (Brenda) Schuler, Jeffrey, Janice, Jolyn and Justin Christiansen, David and Darcy Andahl, Sunne Christiansen and Michael and Scott Christiansen; her great-grandchildren, Chris Arkon, Jeff Purl, Amanda Seaton, Sara Allen, Paul Jr., Aundrea, Tanya, Lance, Kayla, Lacey, Erica, Morgan and Jordan Olson, Ross, Randy, and Reed Danielson, Lindsay, Sarah and Matthew Tschider, Keenan and Joey Schuler and Jada Christiansen; one great-great-grandchild, Tristan; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Louise and Lee Fricke, Bismarck, and Florence Fricke, Mandan; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was middle grandma to Jeffrey, Carrie Ann, Jane, Terry, Marcel and Desiree Bourgois. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell; one brother, Harry; one sister, Martha; one daughter, Mary; three sons, Clarence "Skip," Vern and Lynn; two grandchildren, Ty and Liesa; and a middle granddaughter, Kristi.
Luella Cieslak
Luella Cieslak, 87, Bismarck, died Aug. 15, 2001, at her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas E. Kramer officiating. Burial will be in Menoken Cemetery, Menoken. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Luella Field was born May 1, 1914, at Menoken, the daughter of Edville and Margaret (Smith) Field. She was raised and attended schools in Menoken. She married Alexander Cieslak on Aug. 3, 1935, at Bismarck. They lived in Bismarck where her husband was stationed in the U.S. Army at Fort Abraham Lincoln. Luella worked with her husband in the ownership and operation of Al's Transfer and Storage. After they sold the business they continued to live in Bismarck. Alexander died in 1972. Luella loved to cook and sew. She thoroughly enjoyed company and to have a good game of cards. She loved having her grandkids over and doting on them and she was very involved with Helping Hands. She is survived by her daughter, Albina and her husband Tony, Hammond, Ind.; her sons, Richard and his wife Mary, Bismarck, and Sheldon and his wife Lona Faye, Flagstaff, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Ennen, Bismarck, and Alvira Gabel, Tacoma, Wash.; and two nephews, Orville and Ed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander; three brothers; and two sisters.

Dan F. Feist, 73, Great Falls, Mont., died Aug. 10, 2001, at his home of cancer. Services were held Aug. 13 at St. Ann's Cathedral, Great Falls. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Great Falls. Constantine Zahn
LINTON -- Constantine "Connie" Zahn, 88, died Aug. 15, 2001, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton, with the Rev. Bruce Krebs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. Connie was born on a farm near Hague to Anton and Frances (Volk) Zahn. When he was a baby, the family moved to a farm west of Linton. Connie attended rural school. He worked on various farms in the area until his marriage to Caroline Bosch at Sacred Heart Church, rural Linton, on Jan. 21, 1941. They farmed in the Linton area until 1947 when they moved to a farm two miles north of Temvik. They retired and moved into Linton in 1977. Connie was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and a former member of the Eagles Club. He enjoyed his family and his grandchildren were very special to him. Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Caroline; two daughters and sons-in-law, Anna Marie and Arlie Backhaus, Linton, and Linda and Kenneth Olson, Steele; five grandchildren, Troy Backhaus, Lisa Seymour, Tyler Backhaus, Jason Olson and Travis Olson; six great-grandchildren; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Sylvester and Helen Zahn and Ann Zahn, all of Linton; and three sisters and one brother-in-law, Elizabeth Schneider and Mary A. Zahn, both of Strasburg, and Frances and Ralph Bosch, Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; two sisters; and one great-grandson.

Cremation will take place. He is survived by his wife, Frances; one son, Bruce, Deering; one daughter, Nancy Parisien, Belcourt; 11 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Robert, Oregon; and eight sisters, Marlys Sellness, Arliss Burnhardt and Shirley Olson, all of Bismarck, Ruby Moos and Beverly Schwartz, both of Mandan, Donna Monilaws, Florida, Edna Salseg, Upham, and Betty Decker, Spokane, Wash.

Donald L. Zundel, 67, Kalispell, Mont., died Aug. 14, 2001, after a lingering illness. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MDT Monday at Epworth United Methodist Church. Elizabeth Barbie
Elizabeth "Betty" Barbie, 91, St. Vincent's Care Center, Bismarck, died Aug. 16, 2001. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. today at St. Vincent's Care Center; from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today and from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan; and for one hour prior to services at the church. A rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Perry Funeral Home. Betty was born April 16, 1910, at Eureka, S.D., to Valentine and Felicity (Thomas) Weisbeck. She was raised and educated in Eureka. She worked for Master Cleaners and Dyers as a presser until her marriage to Erwin Barbie on Jan. 4, 1940, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Prior to color film, Betty color-tinted black and white photos taken by her husband, Erwin, an avid photographer. They moved to Venice, Calif., in 1968, where they managed an apartment complex. In 1976 they returned to Bismarck. Betty was a member of St. Jude's Mission at St. Mary's Catholic Church, a longtime member of the Catholic Daughters and also a member of a local homemakers club. She had a special devotion for the saints and Our Lady and a deep love for our Lord. She loved poetry and animals and had a special fondness for birds. She was artistic and painted Dresden figurines. She also had a green thumb for houseplants. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary and Duane Sailer, Bismarck, Elaine and Herb Schaff, Yelm, Wash., and Helen Barbie, Chisholm, Minn.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ernest Barbie, Marcella Barbie and Paul and Marilyn Barbie, all of Bismarck, and Edwin and Suzie Barbie, Salem, Ore.; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Caroline Burgad, Strasburg Care Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Erwin; and nine brothers and sisters.

Paul Hettich
SOLEN -- Paul G. Hettich, 79, Solen, died Aug. 17, 2001, in the Medcenter One Care Center in Mandan. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Mandan United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Walter Schott officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. Paul was born Feb. 5, 1922, at Carson, the son of George and Magdalena (Stickley) Hettich. Raised and educated near Selfridge, he spent a year with the CCC in Baker, Mont., as a young man. He married Helen G. Dutton on March 22, 1942. They farmed in Selfridge until 1957 when they moved to their own farm near Solen. Paul loved the outdoors and horses. He broke many of them in his younger years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Evelyn and Pat Henderson, Solen, Paula and Lonnie Schwartz, Bismarck, and Yvonne and Kent Stave, Las Vegas, Nev.; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Marvin and Barb, Solen, Terry and Shirleen, Bismarck, Larry and Shirl, Twin Falls, Idaho, and Farron, Flasher; 17 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ida Gimbel, Perham, Minn., and Alma Rayburn and Ruth Hand, both of Washington State; and one brother, Gerald, Seattle, Wash. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, who died Jan. 7, 1999; his son, Arlan; his parents; five brothers; and one sister.Paul Senger, 69, Mandan, formerly of Edgeley, died Aug. 16, 2001, in a Mandan care center.
