MADDOCK -- Katherine Hoffert, 76, Maddock, died Aug. 23, 2001, in the Rugby hospital. Anna Isaak
WISHEK -- Anna Isaak, 93, Wishek, died Aug. 23, 2001, in the Wishek care center. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, Kulm, with burial in Kulm Congregational Cemetery. Luverne Leinius
BOWMAN -- Luverne M. Leinius, 85, Bowman, died Aug. 23, 2001, in Bowman. Services will be held at 3 p.m. MDT Sunday at Bowman Lutheran Church, with burial in Bowman Cemetery. Survivors include two sons, Ronald, Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Robert, San Antonio, Texas; one brother, Byron Pullis, Bismarck; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Lydia Liuska
WING -- Lydia Liuska, 84, Wing, died Aug. 23, 2001, in her home under hospice care from cancer complications. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Wing, with the Rev. Muriel Lippert Schauer officiating. Burial will be in Ahola Cemetery, Wing. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today, 1-9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Lydia Marie Lehto was born Sept. 1, 1916, at the Lehto farm south of Wing, the daughter of Kustaa and Alexsandra (Pohjola) Lehto. She attended grades 1-8 at Linden School No. 2 located near the farm. She married Andrew Liuska on July 14, 1946, after he returned from serving in World War II. During World War II, Lydia worked two winters in Detroit, Mich., doing housework and at a factory making gun parts. She also worked one winter at Munsingwear in Minneapolis making hammocks for soldiers. Every spring she returned home to work in the hay field. Lydia was involved in community and youth organizations. She served as Wing township clerk for 52 years, South Wing news correspondent for The Leader News for over 40 years, lifelong member of the Finnish Lutheran Church/Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wing and was a charter member of the Ladies Aid organization. For many years she also served as secretary of the Finnish Ahola Cemetery Association, Wing Farmers Union Youth Director and helped organize the local youth program, election judge, and as a Sunday school superintendent at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Green Valley Homemakers Club, Wing American Legion Auxiliary and the Finnish Young People's Society. Lydia is survived by her children, David and his friend, Marcia Axness, Wing, Reino, Mary and Helen, all of Edmonds, Wash.; two grandsons, Davin, Wing, and seismic vessel Geco Tau of Galveston, Texas, and Dwane, Seattle, Wash.; two sisters-in-law, Ellen and Isabel Liuska, Wing; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, personal friends, and her dog of 15 years, Sam. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Sandra; one daughter-in-law, Diane; one brother, Emil; one sister, Helmi; one nephew, Kenneth; and one niece, Wilma.

Gotthilf Maier
JAMESTOWN -- Gotthilf Maier, 90, Jamestown, died Aug. 23, 2001, in Jamestown. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Jamestown, with burial in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown. He is survived by his wife, Martha; one daughter, Jeannie Kleinknecht, Fargo; one granddaughter; one brother, Alfred Maier, Kerrville, Texas; one sister, Hildegarde Baumann, Ashley; two stepsons, Fred Opp, Gwinner, S.D., and Robert Opp, Elk Grove, Calif.; and five step-grandchildren. DICKINSON -- Ida M. Marthaller, 61, Dickinson, died Aug. 23, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Marvin; four children, Rick, Oakes, Jeff, Dickinson, Scott, Florida, and Cindy Broer, Coon Valley, Wis.; three sisters, Irene Bertsch, Mott, Agnes Haas, Aberdeen, S.D., and Barbara Helman, Monticello, Minn.; three brothers, Lester Fischer, Pierre, S.D., LeRoy Fischer, Lemmon, S.D., and Les Fischer, Albuquerque, N.M.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. MCINTOSH, S.D. -- Martha M. Simons, 86, Monticello, Minn., formerly of McIntosh, died Aug. 22, 2001, in her home. Douglas Shoemaker
VELVA -- Douglas Rex Shoemaker, 75, Velva, died Aug. 24, 2001, in a Minot hospital. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Monday at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva. Douglas was born Sept. 29, 1925, at Valley City. He was raised by his adoptive parents, Emma and W.B.B. Shoemaker in the Bantry and Upham areas. He is survived by his wife, Glenda (Vibeto) Shoemaker; sons, Glenn Berland, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mark Shoemaker, Medora; daughters, Marla Major, N.E. Harbor, Maine, and Marsha Schaan, Wibaux, Mont.; four grandchildren, Haley Shoemaker, and Shawna, Michael and Wade Schaan; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his grandson, Jamie Schaan.

Gertrude Thiel
Gertrude Thiel, 86, Mandan, died Aug. 23, 2001, in her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Revs. Charles Axness and Richard Hagestuen officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue one hour before services at the church. A prayer service will begin at 7 tonight at the funeral home. Gertrude was born March 28, 1915, at Curlew, the daughter of Tollef and Tobine (Olson) Christianson. She attended country school at Curlew, high school at Almont, and college at Dickinson. She was united in marriage to Mike Thiel on Nov. 28, 1933, at Glen Ullin. They moved to Mandan in 1955. Gertie was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W. Amvets and Eagles auxiliaries, Mandan Hospital Volunteers, and was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Mandan. She enjoyed her many travels, particularly her three trips to Norway where she was able to make the acquaintance of her father's relatives. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Janice, and Harlan and Lynn, all of Cheyenne, Wyo.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Selma Ostafin, Mandan, Mabel Olin, Center, and Clara Wilkens and Esther Klusmann, both of Bismarck; her brother, Floyd Christianson, Almont; two daughters-in-law, Rhoda Thiel and Cindy Cross, both of Mandan; and special friends, Norman Guler, Bismarck, and Anne Weinberger, Mandan. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mike, who died in March 29, 1962; her twin sons, Douglas, who died Feb. 14, 1986, and Dennis, who died Aug. 14, 1991; her sister, Ella Bradley; her brother, Conrad Christianson; and two younger siblings.

ELGIN -- Donald L. Carlson, 63, Fargo, formerly of Elgin, died Aug. 25, 2001, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Fargo. He is survived by his wife, Bea; three children, Mark, Round Rock, Texas, Lee Ann Furness, Rochester, Minn., and Dawn Schaffer, Fargo; six grandchildren; and two brothers, Doug, Bismarck, and Martin, Elgin. Stella Emter
GLEN ULLIN -- Stella Emter, 90, Glen Ullin, died Aug. 25, 2001, in Glen Ullin. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at the church, where a prayer service and rosary will begin at 7 tonight. Stella was born May 8, 1911, near Glen Ullin, to John and Eva (Rustowsky) Kobilansky. She was raised and educated near Glen Ullin. She married Adam V. Emter, Nov. 5, 1935, at Glen Ullin. They farmed for many years in the St. Joe area. Stella enjoyed working on the farm and especially the animals. In 1960 they retired and moved to Glen Ullin. Stella enjoyed going fishing and playing cards in her retirement years. She entered the Marian Manor in March 2001 where she has resided since. She was a member of Christian Mothers and TOPS. She is survived by her husband, Adam; two sons and one daughter-in-law, John, Bismarck, and Adalbert and Lucille, Beulah; one daughter-in-law, Mirian Emter, Bismarck; one son-in-law, Leander Muggli, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 14 grandchildren and their spouses, Kerry and Pam Emter, Gary and Karla Ember, Shari and Jamie Pfaff, Terri and Jesse Schuette, Dale Emter, Troy Emter, Della and Dan Antisdel, Dean and Penny Emter, Tamara Emter, Brenda and Curt Ellingson, Jean Emter, Darrin Muggli, Jody Muggli, and Gina and Tim Biolchini; 18 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Tony Kobilansky and Frank Kobilansky, both of Glen Ullin, and Peter Kobilansky, Bismarck; and one sister, Mary Emter, Glen Ullin.
