WOODWORTH -- Irene Clark, 75, Woodworth, died Aug. 21, 2001, in a Jamestown hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at American Lutheran Church, Woodworth. Burial will be in Gem Cemetery, Woodworth. She is survived by her husband, Harrison; seven children, Phyllis Kosterman, Madison, Wis., Larry Clark, Drake, Harry Clark, Colfax, Julie Kostelecky, Tumwater, Wash., and Jim Clark, Dianne Conlon and Debra Hornung, all of Jamestown; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Lester and Orville Thompson, both of Jamestown, and Henry Thompson, Lakeville, Minn.; and one sister, Ruth Krueger, Fargo. Merlyn Engelhard
Merlyn "Mert" Engelhard, 66, Mandan, died Aug. 22, 2001, at his home following a long battle with cancer. Cremation has taken place. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan. Inurnment will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary and parish vigil will begin at 8 p.m. Mert was born March 11, 1935, at Carpio, the son of Eugene and Lena (Eckert) Engelhard. Raised in the Glenburn area, he graduated from high school in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957 and was stationed in Japan. After his discharge he returned to Glenburn. He and Yvonne "Vonnie" Gandrud were united in marriage on April 7, 1961, at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Minot. Mert was employed by Cloverdale Foods for 35 years, beginning in Minot in 1959 and transferring to Mandan in 1976 after his promotion to sales manager. He later served as operations manager of Wichita Frozen Foods from 1989 to 1992. He returned to Mandan in 1992 and began working for F.W. Witt Seasonings as a salesman until his retirement. Mert was diagnosed with cancer in 1998 and chose alternative medicine in Reno, Nev., where he obtained quality life for three years. Mert enjoyed hunting, reading, walking, his family and grandchildren, as well as gardening and yard work. He had a fondness for nature, most particularly purple martins. He and Vonnie met on the dance floor and they both enjoyed this activity for many years. He is survived by his wife, Vonnie; three sons, Craig and Myron, both of Mandan, and Paul and his wife Celeste, Bismarck; four daughters and sons-in-law, Jodi and Arnie Zahn and Janette and Mike Fetch, all of Bismarck, DeVone and Kelly Norman, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Tamra and Kelly Stubs, Edgerton, Kan.; a daughter-in-law, Susan Engelhard, Mandan; 16 grandchildren; his sister, Evelyn Smith, Vienna, Va.; and three brothers, Dennis, Salem, Ore., Alvin, Parshall, and Orvin, Bismarck. His parents and one sister, Anita Bloms, preceded him in death.

Merlin Hatlestad
Merlin D. Hatlestad, 69, Bismarck, died Aug. 21, 2001, at Rochester, Minn., from complications following surgery. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1004 E. Highland Acres, Bismarck, with the Rev. Keith D. Odney officiating. Clergy attending are invited to wear their robes with red stole. Burial will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday in Norway Lutheran Cemetery, rural Garretson, S.D. Merlin David Hatlestad was born Aug. 28, 1931, at Garretson, S.D., the son of Melvin and Henrietta (Opstedahl) Hatlestad. He attended Fairview School, rural Garretson, Augustana Academy, Canton, S.D., and Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D. Following college, he attended Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., and was ordained a Lutheran pastor in September 1957. On June 21, 1960, he and Evelyn Glein were married. Pastor Hatlestad served parishes at Palermo, New Englad, Watford City and Elgin in North Dakota. He served on many boards and committees of the Evangelical Lutheran Church as well as various hospital and nursing home boards and social service boards. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Mark and Lisa Hatlestad, Billings, Mont., John Hatlestad, Raleigh, N.C., and Tim and Sandy Hatlestad, Mankato, Minn.; four grandchildren, Mitchell, Jaden, Tyler and Alyssa Hatlestad; one brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Madeline Hatlestad, Sioux Falls, S.D.; one sister, Carolyn Wooten, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and several nieces and nephews. Josephine Hovland, 94, Albuquerque, N.M., formerly of Jamestown, died Aug. 20, 2001, in Albuquerque. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown. KULM -- Paul Jans, 47, Kulm, died Aug. 20, 2001, in the Ashley hospital after a battle with skin cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kulm Congregational Church. He is survived by his wife, Penny; one son, Bradley, Fargo; one daughter, Andrea Jans, Kulm; his father, Roland, Kulm; one brother, William, Camas, Wash.; and one sister, Rita Humann, Kingman, Ariz. David Owen
David K. Owen, 53, Bismarck, formerly of Adams, passed away Aug. 20, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Mountain Lutheran Church, Adams. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Park River, with military rites provided by the Adams and Park River American Legion Posts. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Tollefson Funeral Home, Park River, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Friends may also call at the church for one hour prior to services. Pallbearers will be Jim Chyle, Bill Anderson, Mark Bestul, Bob Tescher, Micah Engum and Chris Keys. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and all his friends and relatives. David Kenneth Owen was born Oct. 4, 1947, in Bismarck, the son of Delvin F. and Mildred G. (Gronos) Owen. He was raised on his paternal grandparents' farm in Hensler until the age of three when the family moved to Fargo. They later moved to Menoken. The family settled on their homestead in Adams where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from Adams High School in 1965. David joined the U.S. Marine Corps in June 1966. He served in Vietnam where he was awarded the Meritorious Combat Award as corporal in the radio reconnaissance unit. He was discharged in March 1970. David married Linda Sherek on Dec. 12, 1970, in Adams. He attended NDSU in Fargo and graduated in 1974 with a degree in electrical engineering. He worked with his father in Adams for a time before going to work for Montana Dakota Utilities. He worked in Mobridge, S.D., and Sheridan, Wyo., and for the last 18 years he had been in Bismarck. He is survived by his daughters, Tamara (Chris) Keys, Syracuse, N.Y., Rachel (Micah Engum) Owen, Arch Cape, Ore., and Michelle Owen, Pittsburgh, Pa.; three grandchildren, Shannon and Jamie Keys and River Engum; his parents, Park River; his brothers, Mark (Naomi) Owen, Apple Valley, Minn., Kim Owen, Fargo, Mike (Beverly) Owen, Baxter, Minn., and Danny Owen, Grand Forks; his sisters, Connie (Bill) Anderson, Krebs, Okla., Karen (Bob) Tescher, Bismarck, Kathleen (Mark) Bestul, Poway, Calif., and Rebecca (Jim) Chyle, Park River; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Christian R. Jose, 95, Bismarck Baptist Home, died Aug. 22, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Walter Schott and Eldon Reich officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Sunday and 9-11 a.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Christian R. Jose was born Jan. 2, 1906, south of Antelope, the son of Christian and Katharina (Schempp) Jose. He received his eighth grade education in a country school, then one winter of high school at Dickinson State Normal School, and a winter mechanic course at Hanson Auto and Tractor School in Fargo. He grew up on the farm and later lived in Manhattan, Montana and Casselton, where he owned and operated a Gamble Store and Super Valu. He later returned to farming in Hebron, retiring in 1970. He moved to Mandan and later to Bismarck, where he resided at Capitol View Estates. Chris was a quiet, gentle Christian man who loved fishing, his farm, friends and family. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and an active member of the Senior Citizen's Center in Hebron and Bismarck. He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Emanuel and Violet Jose, Bismarck; one sister, Martha Weber, Billings, Mont.; seven nieces and three nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Bismarck Baptist Home.

Henry Bickel
GLEN ULLIN -- Henry Bickel, 94, Glen Ullin, died Aug. 23, 2001, in Glen Ullin. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT today at Zion Lutheran Church, Glen Ullin, with burial in Glen Ullin Cemetery. Henry was born Nov. 22, 1906, at Bluegrass, the son of John and Fredricka (Ellwein) Bickel. He was raised and educated in the Bluegrass area. He married Lydia Breimeier, Nov. 11, 1930, at Bluegrass. He was a lifetime farmer and rancher in the Bluegrass area until he retired in 1973. He enjoyed breaking horses and working with them, and working with the cattle. Following retirement they moved into Glen Ullin. He entered the Marian Manor Healthcare Center in 1994, where he has resided since. Lydia died Sept. 11, 1998. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Delmer and Helen Bickel, Bismarck, and Marvin and Louise Bickel, Glen Ullin; one daughter and son-in-law, Gertha and Ray Hoffman, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Mark Hoffman, Patrick Hoffman, Kimberly Jondahl, Bonnie Kroh, Nolan Bickel and Nancy Huber; seven great-grandchildren, Barry Kroh, Michael Jondahl, William Bickel, Megan Jondahl, T.J.
