Cleo Lawlor
Cleo M. Lawlor, 79, Bismarck, died Aug. 7, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Cleo Marie Evans was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Bismarck, to John Paul and Mabel (Johnson) Evans. She was raised and educated in Bismarck and graduated from Mary College on May 29, 1969, with a bachelors degree in elementary education. Cleo taught at St. Mary's Elementary School for 17 years, retiring in 1986. Cleo married John J. Lawlor on July 16, 1945, in Bismarck. John died Oct. 1, 1997. They were members of St. Mary's Catholic Church. After Cleo's retirement she was a volunteer teacher at the Adult Learning Center at South Central High School. Cleo touched many lives through her teaching and her life. She was a pet lover having owned many cats and dogs throughout her life. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting and reading. She sewed many of her children's clothes throughout their school years. In later years she continued to sew clothes for charitable organizations. Cleo is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Penny Lawlor, Escondido, Calif.; four daughters and three sons-in-law, May and George Dinyer and Joan and Robert Nordstrom, all of Bismarck, Nancy and David Snider, Littleton, Colo., and Diane Lawlor, Bismarck; seven grandchildren, Keir Roper, Todd Holdren, Christopher and Lindsey Lawlor, Laura and Garrett Dinyer and Jill Snider; and special daughters, Ramona Higgins and Roberta Bosch. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; and her daughter, Susan Roper. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Marillac Manor elevator fund or Veteran's Memorial Public Library.

Sylvia Lindstrom
LISBON -- Sylvia L. Lindstrom, 66, Lisbon, died Aug. 9, 2001, in a Fargo hospital of complications of a heart attack. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisbon, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon. Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. Sunday at Armstrong Funeral Home, Lisbon, where a prayer service will begin at7 p.m. Sunday. Sylvia Thu was born April 25, 1935, in Sutton, to Ethel Hewitt Thu and Rasmus B. Thu, where she grew up and attended school. She married Elmer O. Lindstrom on Sept. 6, 1952, at Sutton and moved to Verona. In 1966, they moved to Wishek and lived there until 1973, when they moved to Lisbon. Sylvia was an avid flower gardener, loved decorating for holidays, playing golf, attending music and athletic events and visiting with family and friends. Her greatest joy were her four grandchildren, Derek, Megan, Shane and Mason. She loved to attend the events in which they participated. She is survived by her husband; one son, David, Wahpeton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Russ Richards, Bismarck, and Renee and Steve Kennedy, Fargo; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Robert and Hazel Thu, Jamestown, Norman and Marion Thu, Indio, Calif., and Loren Thu, Milwaukee; and one sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Matt Plese, Poway, Calif.

Edith May
MADDOCK -- Edith D. May, 101, Maddock, died Aug. 6, 2001, in the Rugby hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at North Viking Lutheran Church, Maddock, with burial in Hillside Cemetery, Oberon. She is survived by one son, George, Valley City; two daughters, Mary Jane Rohde, Woodbury, Minn., and Helen Nottestad, Surprise, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Elizabeth Monzelowsky, 71, Mandan, died Aug. 10, 2001, in her home. Arrangements are pending at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Edna Morrical
Edna Morrical, 86, Bismarck, died Aug. 10, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Revs. Don Burnett and Steve Wisthoff officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Edna is survived by four sisters, Rose Glass, Virginia, Ramona Brown, Darlene Tremewan and Mary Ann Andahl, all of California; two brothers, Clarence and Melvin Allmendinger, both of Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents; three brothers; and one sister. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.

Jacob Schaaf
GLEN ULLIN -- Jacob "Jake" Schaaf, 24, Bismarck, died Aug. 10, 2001, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with burial in the church cemetery. There will be no public visitation or wake service. Jacob was born July 29, 1977, at Bismarck, to David and Alvira (Jahner) Schaaf. He was raised on the family farm and attended Glen Ullin school, graduating in 1996. He was currently working for Land O' Lakes in Bismarck. Jake loved to play basketball with his brothers and playing cards, especially pinochle. One of Jake's joys in life was the time spent with his Harley Davidson. He died early Friday morning following a farm accident the night before. He is survived by his parents, David and Alvira, Glen Ullin; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Mona and Lyndon Mertz, Mandan, Rachel Schaaf, Bismarck, and Sophie Schaaf, Glen Ullin; six brothers and three sisters-in-law, David F. and Dana, Glen Ullin, John and Missy, and Samuel and Tania, all of Bismarck, and Thomas, Paul and Matthew, all of Glen Ullin; his grandfather, Frank Jahner, Regent; his grandmother, Clara Schaaf, Glen Ullin; and his girlfriend, Missy Engen, Bismarck. He was a member of the Glen Ullin Motorcycle Club. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Mike Schaaf; and his grandmother, Eva Jahner. (Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin)

HARVEY -- Margaret Volk, 86, Harvey, died Aug. 8, 2001, in a Minot care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Harvey, with burial in the church cemetery. She is survived by one daughter, Carol Ziskovsky, New Prague, Minn.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Betty English, Harvey; and two brothers, Joe Zerr, Martin, and Edward Zerr, Minot. DEVILS LAKE -- Marianna Lauinger, 86, Devils Lake, died Aug. 10, 2001, in the Grand Forks hospital. Valora Werre
JAMESTOWN -- Valora Werre, 60, Jamestown, died Aug. 11, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Haut Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown. She is survived by her children, Jeff Hauf, Nampa, Idaho, Jacki Tolefson, Jamestown, Jolene Sjostrom, Jamestown, Rae Ann Werre, Bismarck; four grandchildren; one brother, Paul Wynes, Apple Valley, Minn.; three sisters, Connie Hall, Des Moines, Iowa, Marie Pfarr, , Cleveland, and Sandra Upton, Jamestown; and two half-sisters, Loretta Pomplin, Jamestown, and Betty Sabin, Foxboro, Wisconsin.

Viola G. Bitz
DICKINSON -- Viola G. Bitz, 78, formerly of Dickinson, died Aug. 23, 2000, in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Gordon G. Neuberger officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service. Viola Gertrude Bitz was born Sept. 4, 1921, at Linton, to John and Lydia (Bauer) Wildermuth. She was raised and educated in Linton, and graduated from Linton High School in 1939. She moved to Bismarck in 1942, and attended Christie Beauty College. Viola worked for Daisy Beauty Shop in Bismarck for four years. Viola married Reubin E. Bitz on Jan. 27, 1946, at Beulah. They lived in Beulah until 1950, at which time they moved to Dickinson. She was employed as a waitress at the Esquire Club and at the Elks Club. Viola was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Dickinson, and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bismarck. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. Viola was a great cook, and loved baking many things for Christmas to take to Minneapolis for her grandchildren, whom she loved very much. She made the best caramel rolls. Viola also enjoyed traveling, dancing and playing cards. She was fond of going for coffee and visiting with her friends. She and her very good friend, Marcy, enjoyed shopping together for over 40 years. This quiet, gracious lady dearly loved her family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her husband, Reubin; one son and daughter-in-law, Rod and Jackie, Maple Grove, Minn.; two grandchildren, Julie and Jamie Bitz, St. Paul, Minn.; one sister, Emily Brandon, Seattle; and her many nieces, nephews and good friends. Viola was preceded in death by her parents.

Maude Jebb
NEW SALEM -- Maude Jebb, 95, New Salem, died Aug. 24, 2000, in the New Salem care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Saturday at Peace Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Harley Holden officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, New Salem. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. MDT today at Elm Crest Manor, New Salem, and from 3-8 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. Maude Conitz Jebb was born Sept. 7, 1904, in Bluegrass, the daughter of Thomas and Razella (Doncick) Ekwortzell. She married Alfred Conitz in Mandan in 1926. Alfred and Maude farmed in Oliver County and also had a meat market in Center. Times were very hard for them during that time. Three sons were born to the couple, Wallace, Raymond and Duane. Alfred died in 1936. After Alfred died, Maude moved to New Salem with her three sons. During the Works Project Administration days, Maude was a supervisor of the sewing project for a few years and worked at various jobs. She worked very hard and was independent and ambitious. She was secretary for the Deep Mine Coal Company for many years. Maude married Herb Jebb in1948. He died in October 1970. Maude liked to fish and hunt. She was always busy. She loved to knit and crochet, bake buns and cookies, cook great meals, can applesauce and make jelly, which she did well into her 90s. She leaves her three sons and two daughters-in-law, Wallace and Mit, Billings, Raymond and Nadia, Las Vegas, and Duane, New Salem; seven grandchildren, Cass Conitz, Kim Loberg, Jess Conitz, James Conitz, Janet Lux, Kevin Conitz and Sandi Goolely; eight great-grandchildren, Millissa and Jenelle Boweles, Austin Goolely, John and Rebecca Loberg, Tye Conitz and Abra and Arron Conitz; and one great-great-grandson, Cameron Raggi, who was born on Aug. 9, 2000, in Hawaii, to Melissa and Jeff Raggi; three sisters, Lydia Helmenstein, Mandan, Selma Truede, New Salem, and Nora Bregette, Minnesota; four stepdaughters, Lillian, Joan, Jackie and Averial; and one stepson, William Jebb. Maude was preceded in death by her two husbands, Alfred Conitz and Herb Jebb; one grandson, Steven Conitz; four sisters, Annie, Ellen, Agnes and Alma; and four brothers, Barney, Henry, Gust and John Ekwortzell.

Charlotte B. Keohane
BEACH -- Charlotte B. Keohane, 95, Beach, died Aug. 23, 2000, in a Dickinson care center. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Beach, with the Rev. David Morman officiating. Charlotte was born July 18, 1905, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Irene (Webb) Keohane. She was raised in Jamestown, graduated from Jamestown High School in 1923. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Jamestown College in 1927 with a degree in education. She began her teaching career at Beach High School in 1928, and then moved to Hawley, Minn., where she served as principal and teacher. On April 6, 1931, she married John M. Keohane at Tintah, Minn., and moved to Campbell, Minn., until 1946. John and Charlotte moved to Beach in 1946 and in 1955, she returned to teaching at Beach High School, retiring in 1965. Charlotte was a member of PEO Chapter C at Beach. She served six years on the North Dakota State PEO Board, and was its state president in 1963. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Janet, Beach, and Neil and Donna, Belle Plaine, Minn.; one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Fred Bolton, Halliday; one sister, Dorothy Young, Pocatello, Idaho; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Manion Keohane, in 1989; and one grandson, John Manion Keohane III in 1979. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Home on the Range, Sentinel Butte, ore St. Benedict's Health Center, Dickinson.

John Frederick Kiesel
NEW SALEM -- John Frederick "Fritz" Kiesel, 87, New Salem, died Aug. 21, 2000, in the New Salem nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT today at Peace Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be in Peace Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour before services at the church. Fred "Fritz" Kiesel was born on March 5, 1913, three miles west of New Salem, the son of Karl and Katherine (Waechter) Kiesel. The youngest of seven children, he grew up on the farm and loved the outdoor life. He worked on the farm for many years and later worked for Wilmer Conitz, Oestreich Brothers of Hannover, Ed Hoeverman and Ted Benishek. In later years, he was employed by Elm Crest, where he took pride in one of his jobs which was raising and lowering the American flag every day, which he continued even after he became a resident there 10 years ago. He loved to read when he was younger, but when asked he always said he only loved to work. A quiet and solitary man, he left the state only once to go to Montana. He is survived by his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Kiesel, Emma Reineke, Bertha Dawson and Caroline Blaich; his brothers, Karl and Bill.
