Alfred Jensen
Alfred Duane Jensen, 71, St. Paul, Minn., died at home on Aug. 7, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at North Heights Lutheran Church, 1700 W. Hwy. 96, Arden Hills, Minn. Private burial with honor guard will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today and for one hour prior to services at the church. Jensen was born Feb. 28, 1930, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Alfred K. and Stella Brown Jensen. He grew up in Bismarck. He earned his pharmacy degree from the University of North Dakota, Fargo, and served as a lieutenant in the Korean conflict. In 1954 he married Muriel Sherman and later moved to St. Paul where he was a pharmacist-manager and then a drug store and gift shop owner. Jensen served Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior, as a deacon, elder, mentor, Bible study group leader and choir member. His passions were imparting Biblical principles of money management and singing in the Passion Play at North Heights Lutheran Church. He was also an avid philatelist, gardener and traveler. He is survived by Muriel, his loving wife of 47 years; his sons, Roger (Linda), St. Paul, Minn., and Daniel (Jennifer), Phoenix, Ariz.; his daughters, Margaret (Michael) Hanratty, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Judith (John) Peterson, Denver, Colo.; his granddaughters Dawn (Tom), Naomi, Hannah and Alissa; his great-grandsons, Justin and Zachery; his brother, Donald (Irene), Bismarck; his sister, Janice (Drew) Lyon, Phoenix, Ariz.; his step-mother, Hilda Jensen, Grand Forks; and his mother-in-law, Elenor Sherman, St. Paul, Minn. His parents preceded him in death. Memorials are preferred to North Heights Lutheran Church.
Cleo Lawlor
Cleo M. Lawlor, 79, Bismarck, died Aug. 7, 2001, in a local hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a vigil rosary will be held at 7 p.m. that evening. Cleo Marie Evans was born Nov. 27, 1921, at Bismarck, to John Paul and Mabel (Johnson) Evans. She was raised and educated in Bismarck and graduated from Mary College on May 29, 1969, with a B.A. degree in elementary education. Cleo taught at St. Mary's Elementary School for 17 years, retiring in 1986. Cleo married John J. Lawlor on July 16, 1945, at Bismarck. John died Oct. 1, 1997. They were members of St. Mary's Catholic Church. After Cleo's retirement, she was a volunteer teacher at the Adult Learning Center at South Central High School. Cleo touched many lives through her teaching and her life. She was a pet lover, having owned many cats and dogs throughout her life. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting and reading. She sewed many of her children's clothes throughout their school years. In later years she continued to sew clothes for charitable organizations. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Penny Lawlor, Escondido, Calif.; her four daughters and three sons-in-law, Diane Lawlor, Mary and George Dinyer and Joan and Robert Nordstrom, all of Bismarck, and Nancy and David Snider, Littleton, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Keir Roper, Todd Holdren, Christopher and Lindsey Lawlor, Laura and Garrett Dinyer and Jill Snider; and her special daughters, Ramona Higgins and Roberta Bosch. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her daughter, Susan Roper; and her parents. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Marillac Manor Elevator Fund or Veterans Memorial Public Library.

Frieda Waltz
MCCLUSKY -- Frieda Waltz, 78, rural McClusky, died Aug. 6, 2001, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, McClusky. Burial will be in Lincolndale Cemetery, rural Denhoff. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky. Frieda was born Oct. 14, 1922, on the family farm in the McClusky area, the daughter of John and Josephine (Werfel) Waltz. She grew up and attended rural school in Gransville Township, Sheridan County. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Lincoln Valley. She lived on the family farm with her brothers and helped out with running the household. Frieda enjoyed gardening and taking care of her flowers. Her relationships with her brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces were close and she always remembered them on their birthdays and anniversaries. She is survived by four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Jack and Joyce, Olympia, Wash., Fred and Bernice, Sacramento, Calif., Paul and Art, both of McClusky, and Gladys Waltz, Fargo; four sisters and one brother-in-law, Hilda Freeman and Josephine Yoch, both of St. Paul, Minn., Helen Sprenger, Harvey, and Marie and Oscar Kalin, Minneapolis, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Marie Waltz, McClusky; and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, John, William and Henry; and two sisters, Emma Bonnet and Alvina Waltz.

PARSHALL -- Deekan Cain Wold, the infant son of Tracey and Monica Wold, Parshall, died Aug. 6, 2001, in a Minnesota hospital. Lawrence Zwinger
SYKESTON -- Lawrence Zwinger, 88, Sykeston, died peacefully at his home on Aug. 4, 2001. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, Sykeston, with the Revs. Mathew Pamplaniyil and Eugene Fish officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. today at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at the church. Lawrence Zwinger was born Nov. 1, 1912, in Kidder County near Pettibone, the son of John and Elizabeth (Goltl) Zwinger. He graduated from Sykeston High School in 1932 and later served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. On Feb. 14, 1939, Lawrence was united in marriage to Loretta Hafner at Sykeston and together raised their six children in the Sykeston area. Lawrence and Loretta farmed together until they retired in 1975 and moved into Sykeston. They enjoyed many miles of traveling across the country in their motor home to visit children and friends along the way. In May 2000, Loretta moved into Golden Acres Nursing Home in Carrington. Lawrence was a most devoted husband and visited with her every day. He brightened the day of staff and residents at Golden Acres with his stories and jokes. He will also be missed by many loving nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Lawrence was very active in church and community activities. He enjoyed woodworking, playing a good game of cribbage and fishing with his friends every day possible. He was a lifelong member of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Sykeston. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Loretta; six children; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. His children and their families are Richard and Jeanette Zwinger and their children, Steve, Linnea and Darren, all of Windsor, Calif.; Tom and Dorie Zwinger, Arroyo Grande, Calif., and their children, Cyndi (John) Odeberg, Arroyo Grande, Calif., and Curt Zwinger, Lake Tahoe; Carol and Bob Weber, Eden Prairie, Minn., and their children, Debra (Mike) Deneen, Excelsior, Minn., and Paul (Amy) Weber, Salem, Mass.; Joan and Larry Brown, Mandan, and their children, Tom (Theresa) Williams, Bismarck, and Candace (Rick) Nelson, Wilton; Jeanette and Al Selleck and their daughter, Christine Selleck, all of Houston, Texas; and Rita Zwinger, Bismarck, and her children, Leslie (Dion) Beneke, Lynette Stebner, James Gray and Jewel Gray, all of Bismarck, and Eric Stebner, in the U.S. Army. His great-grandchildren are Erica, Chad and Allison Oberg, Ty Williams, Cayla, Chasidy and Hunter Nelson, Jason Selleck and Sheree Schmidt. He is also survived by one sister, Anne (Bill) Balvitsch, Carrington; one stepbrother, Leo (Marie) Laber, Sykeston; and one stepsister, Beatrice Schelling, Jamestown. He was preceded in death by his father, John Zwinger; his mother, Elizabeth Zwinger Laber; his stepfather, Frank Laber; two brothers, John and Francis; one sister, Stephanie Zwinger; one stepbrother, Alfred Laber; and one stepsister, Leona Nelson.

Dagny Aslakson, 95, Crookston, Minn., formerly of Sheyenne, died Aug. 8, 2001, in Crookston. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grandfield Lutheran Church, rural Sheyenne. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She is survived by three children, Lucile Torkelson, Crookston, Minn., Leigh Aslakson, Billings, Mont., and Diane garber, Cary, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one half-sister, Ruby Vaught, Kent, Wash. Burnell Degner
MCKENZIE -- Burnell Degner, 57, McKenzie, died Aug. 9, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday evening. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. Burnell was born Aug. 14, 1943, to John and Dorothy (Roth) Degner in Bismarck. He was raised north of Sterling where he went to rural Christiania township school, also Sterling Elementary and Wing High School. In 1961 he moved north of McKenzie and started his business of custom stacking, hauling and grinding hay. He built his own self-propelled hay grinder. In June 1992 Burnell married Tana Turnbull. She died in September 1994. He is survived by his mother, Dorothy, Wing; one brother and sister-in-law, Telman and Sharon Degner, Menoken; three sisters and brothers-in-law, DiAnn and Howard Pidarson, Sterling, Vergenne and Dennis Just, Billings, Mont., and Kathleen and Terry Schuh, Wing; his nieces and nephews; a very special friend, Mary Burgad; and a good friend, Larry Bergquist. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tana; his father, John; and a niece, Arlette Pidarson.

UNDERWOOD -- Ed F. Pulver, 86, Underwood, died Aug. 8, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Augustana Lutheran Church, Underwood, with the Rev. Dan Maurer officiating. Burial will be in the city cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Edward F. Pulver was born March 29, 1915, at Jamestown, to Floyd and Larvina (Whitney) Pulver. In 1921 he moved with his family from Pettibone to Zap. He married Magdalena "Maggie" Helm on May 18, 1932, at Zap. Ed worked at the Zap Coal Mine from 1928 to 1947. They moved to Underwood where he and his brother-in-law, Ole Simonson, purchased the Underwood Coal Mine. Ed's wife Maggie passed away in 1967. He married Emma Broneske-Fritza on April 20, 1968, at Underwood. In 1971 the Underwood Coal Mine closed and he started his own business, Pulver Sanitation. He operated Pulver Sanitation until his retirement in 1989. Ed served on the Augustana Lutheran Church Council for many years. He was active in the McLean County Stock-Car Racing Association during the 1950s. He enjoyed fishing, camping and raising flowers. Ed took a special interest in raising roses. He is survived by his wife, Emma; five grandchildren, Susie Sheppard (David), Fargo, Nancy Allen (Chuck), Ironton, Ohio, Dean E. Swanson (Debby), Underwood, Kathy Neumiller (Marvin), Washburn, and Marge Fiedler (Byron), Mercer; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two stepchildren, Jeff Fritza (Shirley), Carrington, and Rose Mary Ringenberg (Darrell), Brinsmade; 12 step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Phineas Pulver (Nina), Aurora, Minn.; three sisters, Minnie Davis, Richmond, Wash., Cassie Simonson, Underwood, and Edith Buschbacher (Matt), Pinehurst, Idaho; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie; a daughter, Delores Swanson; his parents; a sister, Mildred Bowers; and an infant sister.

Minnie Vogel
Minnie (Ehlis) Vogel, 87, Mandan, died Aug. 8, 2001, in Mandan. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan. A Catholic Daughters Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. today, followed by a parish vigil at 7 p.m. and a Women of the Moose ritual at 7:30 p.m. Minnie Ehlis was born Oct. 22, 1913, in Bismarck, to John and Frances (Schmidt) Ehlis. She was raised and educated in a country school and raised on a farm northwest of Mandan. In June 1932 she married Joseph A. Vogel at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mandan. Minnie was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, St. Joseph's Circle, St. Mary's Verein, Catholic Daughters and Women of the Moose. She enjoyed watching sports, bowling, animals, growing plants, playing cards and spending time at the lake. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Carlene and Duane Mastel, Fargo; one daughter-in-law, Jan Vogel, Mandan; four grandchildren, Esther Vogel, Mandan, Mavis and George Wall, California, and Paul Mastel and Pamela and Ken Astrup, all of Fargo; two great-grandchildren, Tom and Matt Ingalls; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Andrew and Clem Ehlis, Adam and Pauline Ehlis and Simon and Ann Ehlis, all of Mandan; and two sisters, Catherine Boardman and Rose Kautzman, both of Spokane, Wash. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph A. Vogel Sr., who died April 12, 1977; one son, Joseph A. Vogel Jr.; one grandson, Joseph A. Vogel III; her parents; one brother, John Ehlis; and two brothers-in-law, Dick Boardman and Ed Kautzman. At the family's request, memorial contributions can be made to Minnie's favorite charities.
