John A. Mushik, 81, 311 Sixth St. N.W., Mandan, died July 7, 2001, in the Baptist Nursing Home, Bismarck. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. He was educated in the Mandan schools and attended St. John's College in Collegeville, Minn. John was the third generation of his family to operate the Mushik Shoe Store in Mandan. For 80 years Mandan's oldest shoe store bore the Mushik name. John Mushik Sr. had come to Mandan in 1908 from Crimea and was a shoemaker from 1909 to 1936. His son, John Mushik II, worked with his dad in the store from the time he was a teen until his death. Don Mushik, John's brother, came home from WWII to operate the store after his father's death, taking over management from his mother and sisters. After being discharged from the service, John III began repairing shoes and Mushik's. Don was called up during the Korean War and John and his mother then took over management. John then operated Mushik's for more than 30 years before selling it in 1982. The shoe store business continues to be a part of the family as the Red Wing Shoe Store in Bismarck has been owned by John and Gwen for many years. John married Gwen Dahners after returning home from WWII where he was a staff sergeant in the National Guard 188 field artillery. He was stationed in England and four days after D-Day his unit crossed the English Channel and entered France. One of the interesting stories he told was his experience fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He was quite fluent in the German language because of his heritage and spent time as an interpreter for the Army. Upon retirement John and Gwen became great walkers, whether it was on the streets in Mandan or at Kirkwood Mall. Everywhere they would go, people would recognize them and wave or stop to visit. For seven years, each winter, they visited Disney World where they enjoyed walking around all of the theme parks. John had a well equipped workshop and many wooden toys came out of it when he helped his grandchildren and great-grandchildren design them. John was an active member of the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, American Legion and Knights of Columbus. He and his wife were very active in Spirit of Life Church until he entered the nursing home. He is survived by his wife, Gwen; one daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Bob Roesler, Bismarck; one grandson, Craig Huelskamp; two granddaughters, Kim (Corey) Dahl and Gail (Tim) Meland; four great-grandchildren, Andy and Britta Dahl and Steven and Marie Meland; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Charles and Dorothy Tighe and Art and Marilyn Skantz; his sisters-in-law, Lucile Luck and Corliss Mushik; his brother-in-law and wife, Greg and Betty Dahners; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Josephine Mushik; and his brothers, Don and Bill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the God's Child Project.

Ben attended grade school in a one-room schoolhouse south of Raleigh and graduated from Carson High School. It is ironic that in later years he would be teaching in a one-room schoolhouse. It was then that he met the love of his life, Pauline (Paula) Loeb, while helping her dad after school during harvest. They were married May 13, 1946, at St. Gertrude's Church south of Raleigh. In 1949, they moved to West Fargo where Ben worked for Armour and Co. for 10 years as a livestock buyer until they closed. He moved his family to Fargo and he worked for the Fargo Country Club for 11 years. In the 1970s they built and operated the Seneca Inn near St. Luke's Hospital, now MeritCare. In 1979, they moved to Davenport when they bought and operated the Shenandoah Supper Club for 10 years. He was also a drummer for his wife's Paula Day Band for 35 years. After Ben retired he was very active in volunteer work, visiting the home bound, and serving as a eucharistic minister and volunteering for Hospice of the Red River Valley and helped where ever he was needed. He served on the Citizen's Advisory Committee for the state developmental center for five and a half years until May 2001. He was a lifelong member of the Fargo-Moorhead Knights of Columbus and a member of the Harwood Legion and Lisbon Eagles. Elsie Kraft
Elsie A. Kraft, 86, Bismarck, died July 9, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Dale Naaben officiating. Burial will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday in Page Cemetery, Page. Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service. Elsie was born Oct. 11, 1914, at Hunter, to Frank A. and Ada (Scharmer) Kraft. When she was a young girl, her parents moved to Page where she attended grade school and graduated from high school. She attended business college in Fargo, where she received a secretarial certificate. She then attended Valley City State Teachers College, earning a teaching certificate. Elsie was employed by the Traill County Agricultural Association in Hillsboro for eight years before moving to Fargo, where she worked for the Internal Revenue Service as a supervisory tax examiner. In this position she received an Honorary Recognition Certificate for her job performance. In 1968 Elsie began disability retirement. She lived with her mother at Valley City until 1993 when they moved to Bismarck. She moved to the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in 1996. Elsie enjoyed visiting with her family and friends. Despite her right-side paralysis from a brain tumor in 1967, she learned to use her left hand to write and type and regularly corresponded with her friends and family members around the country. She received many letters in return, particularly at Christmas time. Elsie liked to play a good game of cards, especially whist and gin rummy. Throughout her lifetime, she stayed active with numerous craft projects, ceramics and bowling. In her younger years, Elsie enjoyed traveling and photographing these and other special events in her life, often sharing her slide shows with others. She was a loyal fan of Lawrence Welk and his champagne music makers. Elsie had a keen sense of fashion, coupled with refined tastes. She used these talents to dress in elegant ensembles, coordinating classy clothes with matching jewelry, gloves and other accessories, including an appropriate selection from her cache of stunning hats. Elsie loved the color green and much of her wardrobe, furniture and possessions, including her first little Ford car she named "Lizzy," were all green. Elsie actively attended church services at the Missouri Slope chapel and her Bible was always close at hand. Her quiet faith must surely have sustained her throughout the many challenges she faced in her life. It was evident that she lived and practiced her Christian values. Elsie was a friendly, warm and generous person, with a delightful sense of humor. She faced the challenges and obstacles in her life with courage and dignity and was never a complainer. She had an incredibly positive attitude and regardless of whether she was sick or in pain, she would always say she was "pretty good," even until the very end of her life. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Walter L. Braun, Bismarck; two nieces and their spouses, Renee and John Thorp, Bozeman, Mont., and Barbara Braun and Glen Neumann, Bismarck; and two grandnieces, Sasha and Rachel Thorp.
