She is survived by three daughters, Diane Otterstetter, Coon Rapids, Minn., Audrey Bosch, Parker, Colo., and Deloris Lawrence, Monument, Colo.; four sons, Darrell, Wahpeton, Chuck, Wishek, Donald, Breckenridge, Minn., and Clyde, Winner, S.D.; one sister, Esther Brandner, Bismarck; one brother, Elmer Huber, Ellendale; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Adam Geiss
Adam F. Geiss, 78, 1507 First Ave. N.W., Mandan, died June 30, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. A rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, where visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. Tuesday and 9-11 a.m. Thursday. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour before services. Adam was born July 27, 1922, at Helena, Mont., to Peter and Lena (Heck) Geiss. His family moved to Mandan in 1923, where he was raised and educated. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945. He moved to Vallejo, Calif., and worked in shipyards from 1945-1955. He then moved to Mandan and in 1957, married Gwendolyn Gray at St. Joseph Catholic Church. He sold insurance for NW National Life and also sold agri-parts throughout North Dakota. He is survived by his son, David, Mandan; one sister, Betty Wolff, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; and two granddaughters, Rachael and Ashley. Adam was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, who passed away July 25, 1993; one sister, Clem Schweigert; and two brothers, Bing and Johnny.
Ina Krebsbach
GARRISON -- Ina M. Sayler Krebsbach, 82, Garrison, died June 29, 2001, in a Garrison hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church, Garrison, with the Rev. Paul Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Garrison Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Ina was born to Henry and Bertha (Thode) Schlichting on March 19, 1919, in Minot. She was raised and educated in Garrison where she graduated from Garrison High School in 1937. After graduating she spent some time in the state of Washington before returning to North Dakota. She married Edward Sayler, Nov. 3, 1940, in Garrison. They had one son, Kelley, Feb. 27, 1944. They lived and farmed just north of Garrison. Ed died Jan. 24, 1963. Ina continued living on the farm helping her son, Kelley with the farming operation. She married Luverne Krebsbach, April 20, 1968, in Garrison. They continued to live just north of Garrison while Luverne farmed in the Max area and Ina worked at Johnson's Red Owl and later in housekeeping at the Garrison Memorial Hospital until their retirement. Luverne died April 29, 1990. Ina's greatest joy was the time she shared with her family, most importantly her granddaughters and three great-grandchildren. Her hobbies were always centered on them. Her pride in her garden and yard was made greater because she shared them with her family. Ina never missed a family member's birthday with all the special requests granted. Ina was very active in Peace Lutheran Church, holding offices in her circle and making hundreds of quilts that were donated to various organizations. Ina is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Kelley and Del Sayler, Garrison; two granddaughters and two grandsons-in-law, Deleene and Jim Wilcox, Douglas, and Tonya and Tod Graeber, Garrison; three great-grandchildren, Chandra, Eric and Caitlin Wilcox; one sister and brother-in-law, Lillian and Herbert Sayler, Chehalis, Wash.; two nieces; two nephews; and numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; her husband, Luverne; and her parents.

Joshua Adam Marsolek, 21, Jamestown, died June 30, 2001, after a courageous battle against cancer, at his parents' home near Jamestown. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with burial in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown. He is survived by his parents, Ron and Gail Marsolek; his brother, Jonathan, Jamestown; and his grandparents, Adam and LaVerne Malinski, Carrington, and Agatha Marsolek, Jamestown. Edwin Morast
HALLIDAY -- Edwin P. Morast, 81, Halliday, died July 1, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Halliday, with the Rev. Richard Melchert officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-9 tonight at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah. Edwin Peter Morast was born Feb. 7, 1920, at Zap, to Robert and Caroline (Ost) Morast. Edwin grew up and attended school at Zap. In 1941, he met and married Hilma Olson. They farmed north of Zap until 1957, when they moved to Halliday and continued farming. Togther they raised three sons, Lyle, Bruce and Leland. In 1978, they moved into town where they enjoyed their retirement. Edwin enjoyed his work and even helped out on the farm during his retirement. He had a great love for his family, friends and neighbors, and enjoyed fishing as well as a good card game. He was also known for his great stories and jokes. Edwin's first wife and partner, Hilma, passed away in 1985. In 1987, Edwin met and married Jean Lee. They continued living in Halliday where they have enjoyed their many friends and family. Edwin is survived by his wife, Jean; three sons and daughters-in-law, Lyle and Carol, Bismarck, Bruce and Cleo, Mesa, Ariz., and Leland and Kaylen, Halliday; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Esther Horning, Beulah; two sisters-in-law, Lenore Sollom, California, Grace Olson, Minneapolis; five stepsons; two stepdaughters; four stepdaughters-in-law; two stepsons-in-law; 28 step-grandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; and two daughters-in-law. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Sakakawea Select Hospice.
Ione Towne
Ione (Brown) Towne, 83, Bismarck, died June 30, 2001, in her Edgewood Vista home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating, and the Rev. Richard Smith giving the eulogy. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Riverside Cemetery, Moorhead, Minn. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service. Ione Marie Brown, the daughter and one of seven children of Edward and Matilda B. "Tillie" (Heller) Brown, was born Oct. 16, 1917, on a farm near Dickinson. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Fargo, where she was raised. Ione graduated from Moorhead High School in 1935. After her graduation, she married George H. "Micky" Fritz in Moorhead. In 1942 he was killed in action at Guadalcanal. On May 18, 1946, she marriedVernon Lloyd "Trapper" Towne at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Moorhead. They had two children, Larry Allen Towne and Cynthia Renae (Towne) Dwyer. Vernon died on May 5, 1985. Ione worked for Armour and Company at its Fargo meat packing plant as a bookkeeper and at Rex Cafe in Moorhead. In 1969, she and Vernon moved to Mandan to manage the Surplus Center (later Dakota Surplus). She was a member of Trinity LUtheran Church, Christian Women's Club, Card Club, the Elks, and the ladies auxiliary of the V.F.W. Club, in which she once served as president. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards and especially round and square dancing. Ione believed people should be kind and good, and that what you do for others comes back to you. This conviction led her to many years of volunteering -- for the State Heritage Center, Meals on Wheels, the Radisson Gift Shop and individuals in the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. In appreciation for her efforts, Ione received awards recognizing her kind contributions. She always thought of others before herself and cherished her many friends. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Rebecca Towne, Mandan; her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Thomas Dwyer, Mandan; two grandchildren, Scott Towne and his wife, Natascha, and Jenessa Dwyer, all of Mandan; and three great-grandchildren, Jeffrey Berg, McLaughlin, S.D., and Shane and Lucus Towne, Mandan. Also surviving are her brother and sister-in-law, Vernon "Vernie" and Dottie Brown, Fresno, Calif.; her sister, Matilda "Mattie" Beede, Moorhead; her sister, Donna Wilson, Fargo; and many very good friends. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husbands; her brothers, Ervin and Bernard "Nardy;" and her sister, Elvira "Vi" Vescio. God saw she was getting tired And a cure was not to be, So he put his arms around her And whispered, "Come with me." In tears we watched her suffer And saw her fade away. Although we loved her dearly We could not make her stay. "A heart of gold stopped beating." "Hard working hands now rest." God broke our hearts To prove to us ... He only takes the Best.

Deanne Altenburg
Deanne G. Altenburg, 31, Bismarck, died July 1, 2001, in her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jeff Tengesdal officiating. Private family burial will be in Baldwin Cemetery. Deanne was born March 16, 1970, the daughter of Howard and Linda (Herdebu) Altenburg. She was raised and attended schools in Bismarck. Deanne attended School of Hope and was also the 1974 Poster Child for Easter Seal of North Dakota. She attended Special Education Services through the Bismarck Public School System. Deanne has been involved in the work programs through HIT and in her residency through Enable. Though Deanne was handicapped, her personality shined through and she could make people laugh. She was a gentle person who loved McDonalds french fries. Deanne could come up with quite the lines sometimes that brought a chuckle of surprise from those around her. She is survived by her parents, Howard and Linda Altenburg, Bismarck; her two sisters and brothers-in-law, Janeene and Brad Sibla, Bismarck, and Kim and Ward Johnson III, Grand Forks; six nieces and nephews; and her special friend and caretaker, Nadean Johnson, Bismarck. The Altenburg family wishes to express their deep appreciation to everyone who has been so loving and caring with Deanne and their family through the years. Your kindness will never be forgotten.

She is survived by her husband, Stanley; two daughters, Evangeline Teske, Bismarck, and Virginia Bjerke, Jamestown; two stepsons, Steve Ouren, Fargo, and Greg Ouren, Fargo; 16 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Emma Kramlich, Medina, and Mary Kramlich, Bismarck; and three brothers, Rudy Mittleider, Tappen, Israel Mittleider, Tappen, and Harry Mittleider, Tappen. Erma Garrity
Erma Garrity, 86, Bismarck's virtuoso concert pianist, died June 30, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 6-8 tonight, and one hour before services at the funeral home. Erma earned an undergraduate music degree from North Dakota State University and a bachelor in philosophy of music -- a degree created especially for her -- from DePaul University in Chicago. From there she went to study at the University of Minnesota and played with the Minneapolis Symphony, being the first student soloist to do so. Her studies then took her to Europe to study with Edward Weiss in Berlin. Mr. Weiss and therefore, Mrs. Garrity, traced their musical heritage to Busoni and Lizst. Berlin acclaimed her as an "artistic virtuoso." After her service with the Red Cross during World War II she returned to Bismarck and married Joseph A. Garrity, then Bismarck's Air Force recruiter and an Air Force fighter pilot. After the death of her husband, and her children were grown, she returned to her passion for the piano. She taught piano at Mehus Conservatory, BSC and in her home. She gave several local concerts and had played for the Thursday Music Club in April 2001. Erma stayed active in music and painting to the end. She was surrounded by many devoted friends and students, and was very devoted to her family. She remained a gracious and unassuming woman despite her many accomplishments. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Gayle and Russell Seaver, Springfield, Mo., Patricia Garrity and Roger Mathena, Moffit, and Kathleen and John Brown, Wakefield, R.I.; three sons, William and Terrance, both of Minneapolis, and Joseph, Washburn; five grandchildren, Dawn Garrity, Shawna Burkey, Dusty and Jesse Wilkens, and Michael Brown; and two great-grandchildren, Austin Seaver and Jayden Wilkens. Erma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Josephine Shafer and Mary Grebenc.

He is survived by one son, Dennis McCarter, California; three step-children, Kay, Roger and Becky, all of Oregon; several grandchildren; and two brothers, Ron, Carrington, and Gerald, Mandan.

TAPPEN -- Leonard Lang, 68, Tappen, died July 1, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Tappen United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Grant Piehl officiating. Burial will be in Fisher Cemetery, Tappen. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Steele, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Leonard was born Jan. 4, 1933, the son of Gotthielf and Emma (Kalmback) Lang, at Tappen. He grew up and attended school in Tappen. In 1950 he took over the family farm. On April 20, 1952, he married Evelyn Krieger in Tappen. They farmed until 1995. Leonard loved to farm and work with his livestock. It was never work to him, it was his passion. He was a Tappen Township Board supervisor for over 20 years and was a member of Tappen United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Evelyn; two daughters and their husbands, Rhonda Lyn and David Wyum, West Fargo, and Gayla and Clyde Heinle, Flasher; one son, Kerwin Lang, Tappen; three grandchildren, Melinda and Caroline Wyum and Cadee Heinle; one sister and her husband, Loretta and Delbert Izler, Tappen; and three brothers and one sister-in-law, Dennis Lang, Colton, Texas, Larry and Diane Lang, Underwood, and Wayne Lang, Dawson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Beverly Rudolph; and two infant brothers, Arthur and Dale.
