Emil Blotter
Emil Blotter, 87, Bismarck, died May 25, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Dale Nabben officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the care center. Emil was born March 25, 1914, to Gothilf J. and Fredericka (Steudle) Blatter, where he was raised and educated in Malcolm Township, McLean County. He worked on the farm of his cousin, John Blatter, before his marriage to Evelyn J. Reitman on June 15, 1938. They had two daughters, Adeline and Lois, and the family lived in the Underwood area until moving to Bismarck in 1955, where Emil operated a Texaco service station. In 1962, Emil and his wife moved the business to Carrington, and in 1969 Emil sold his business. Until 1976, they remained in Carrington and Emil worked for Jim and Connie Carr. Emil and Evelyn moved back to Bismarck, where Emil worked part time at Berg Motor Supply until 1985, when he retired. Emil will be missed by his daughters and son-in-law, Adeline and William Roadfeldt, Findley, Ohio, and Lois (Lotte) Bailey, Coleharbor; four grandchildren, Holly (Mrs. Kirk O'Riordan), Charles Roadfeldt, Becci Bailey and Jim Bailey; one great-grandson, Josh; one sister, Frieda Midstokke, Anaheim, Calif.; and other family and good friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; his parents; his sisters and brothers, Bertha Flath, Betty Songas, G.B. (Barney) Blatter, Clara Kranz and Fred Blatter; and his cousin, John Blatter.

Jack Barden
FORT YATES -- Jack Barden, 61, Fort Yates, died May 25, 2001, at his home. Burial services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the LeLewis and Jana Gipp property located on Highway 1806, three miles south of Prairie Knights Casino; turn 2 and 1/2 miles east. The route will be posted with red flags. Felix Kidder, Isaac Dog Eagle and other spiritual leaders will be officiating. A gathering will be held after the burial service at Standing Rock Old Gym, Fort Yates. Jack was born Feb. 8, 1940, in Pingree, to Ward and Helen (McManus) Barden. He was raised in Tioga and graduated from Tioga High School in 1957. He attended the University of North Dakota and received his Bachelors, Masters and PhD degrees there. Jack worked in various aspects of tribal education since 1977. He taught, wrote grants and coordinated new project development within the tribal college system. He was one of the founders of Standing Rock Community College, now known as Sitting Bull College. Jack married Jean Katus on the banks of the Missouri River near Fort Yates on July 27, 1973. He is survived by his wife, Jean; one daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Mike (Jenuwine) Barden, Chicago; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Darcie (Hansen) Barden, and their children Harrison and Griffin Barden, all of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister and brother-in-law, JoNell and Jim Hatlelid, Minot; one brother, Joel Barden, Columbus, Ohio; and his Hunka (adopted) granddaughter, Skye Cante Yellow. Mary Miller
Mary Ann Miller, 75, Bismarck, died May 25, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Tom Dunham officiating. Burial will be held at 1 p.m. in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. Mary Ann (Andersen) Miller was born April 28, 1926, the daughter of Jacob and Dorothy (Marto) Andersen in Valley City. She grew up and attended school in Luverne. She graduated from high school in May 1942. Mary Ann graduated from VCSC with a two-year teaching certificate on her 18th birthday and continued attending college at Valley City, NDSU, UND, Minot and Kansas State University. She received her teaching degree from the University of Mary. She continued her graduate studies at Moorhead State, where she received a learning disabilities credential. She loved teaching and taught at schools at Luverne, Hazen, Crosby, Buffalo and Bismarck, the past 31 years as an LD teacher. Mary Ann married Eugene Miller on May 3, 1947. Gene died in August 1995. She retired in July 1998. She is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-law, Jo Bickert, Diane Miller and Mary and Allan Dukart, all of Bismarck, and Jean and Jim Schlenvogt, Flagstaff, Ariz.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, David E. Miller, Bismarck, and Rick and Claudia, Beulah; six grandchildren, Becca Bickert, Sarah Bickert, Erica and Garrett Schlenvogt and Austin and Michael Dukart; one great-grandchild, Jaxon Beitelspacher; one brother, Jacob L. Andersen, Luverne; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert A. and Lorrie Miller, Bismarck; and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; and her parents.
